Bentley's McCallum Graduate School of Business Receives Prestigious Brillante Award

Bentley's McCallum Graduate School of Business Receives Prestigious Brillante Award

Named National Academic Institution of the Year, Brillante Award honors BentleyÂ’s Graduate Business School for Outstanding Leaders whose work fosters Hispanic Leadership through Graduate Management Education and Professional Development.

(PRWEB) November 6, 2004

Waltham, MA (PRWEB) November 6, 2004 – Bentley’s McCallum Graduate School of Business received the Brilliante Award on Saturday, October 23, 2004, at a ceremony held in conjunction with the National Society of Hispanic MBAs’ (NSHMBA) Annual Conference in Forth Worth, Texas. The McCallum Graduate School of Business is the sixth academic institution to receive the highest honor from NSHMBA and the first graduate school on the entire east coast. Bentley is now the only institution to receive national awards from NSHMBA, the National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) and the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA).

Nominated by NSHMBA’s Boston Chapter President, Raul Medina, Bentley was recognized for its “initiative and innovation… its wide range of successful programs and a level of leadership to be emulated by other institutions in the area of diversity development and community outreach…extending support both to New England’s and our nation’s Asian-American, Latino, African-American, Native American, and Multiracial (ALANA) communities.

Noting BentleyÂ’s leadership in supporting ALANA students in their pursuit of excellence in business education, NSHMBA also invited Bentley for a seat on the NSHMBA Corporate Advisory Board (CAB), which Bentley joined in 2003.

Widely known as the "Premier Hispanic Organization," The National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) was created in 1988 and serves 28 chapters and 6,000 members in the U. S. and Puerto Rico. NSHMBA works to prepare Hispanics for leadership positions throughout the U. S., so that they can provide the cultural awareness and sensitivity vital in the management of the nationÂ’s diverse workforce.

At Bentley, multicultural initiatives, innovative programs, and state-of-the art facilities such as a real-time trading room, come together to provide the most advanced business education possible – against the backdrop of a vibrant, diverse learning community. Bentley’s approach does not just focus on students who attend the graduate school – the University believes work must be done at the pre-collegiate (elementary, junior high and high school), the collegiate and the graduate school level, and in the professional community. Over the past 20 years Bentley has engaged ALANA students and professionals through programs including:

Graduate Scholarships and Partnerships with ALANA Organizations

**Bentley has partnerships with nine organizations and offers merit-based scholarships to the members of each. Scholarship recipients receive funds that cover 50% to 100% of tuition. This partnership approach is unique in New England and throughout the U. S. because it allows Bentley to provide graduate education targeted at members of professional/industry associations. The success of BentleyÂ’s scholarship model has also encouraged other universities to develop similar programs for ALANA graduate students.

**Bentley has a joint scholarship program with all nine of the following ALANA organizations: National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA), Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA), Latino Professional Network (LPN), Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), Hispanic-American Chamber of Commerce (HACC), National Association of Black Accounts (NABA), National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA), National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP), and Society of Women Engineers (SWE).

**In 2004, Bentley awarded more than $210,000 in scholarships to the members of our partner organizations.

Support and Sponsorship of ALANA Organizations and Communities

**Bentley hosted and sponsored “Policies in a Global Market: Impact on Latinos”, an all-day conference focused on the business, economic and social status of Latinos in the U. S. The conference, attended by roughly 300 students, administrators and community leaders, was created in conjunction with the Boston Chapter of NSHMBA and the Boston Hispanic American Chamber of Commerce. Bentley has also hosted conferences on women in business and cultural perspectives of Asian Americans. In November 2004, Bentley will host its fourth conference in the series, “Global Vision of Black Executives and Entrepreneurs.”

Innovative and Successful Outreach Programs from Middle School to Graduate School

Pre-collegiate Partnerships

**Kids, Inc. – Kids, Inc. was established at Bentley in 1992 to introduce at-risk inner-city children from the Greater Boston area to the free market system and business principles through a structured, educational and entertaining program on a college campus. Since 1992, more than 400 students, principally sixth, seventh and eight graders have attended Kids, Inc with no program costs to their families.

**Leadership Institute – For high school students interested in establishing a business or professional career, this program offers 135 students an introduction to leadership in the world of private enterprise. Based at Bentley, the Leadership Institute is a one-week residential camp designed for high school sophomores and juniors.

**Wall Street 101 – Wall Street 101 is a fun and interactive opportunity to learn about the financial industry and other business fields, from NASDAQ to IPO to Dow Jones in a one-week residential program. Through classroom participation and hands-on exercises, high school sophomores, juniors and seniors explore the stock market and discover the investment process while learning about stocks, bonds and currencies. Teams of students work in a real trading room environment and conduct simulated trading sessions in the ultra modern 61 seat Trading Room located in Bentley’s Hughey Center for Financial Services. Wall Street 101 includes trips to the Boston Federal Reserve, the Boston Stock Exchange, and other Boston area attractions. Participants also attend college-level lectures and receive a broad overview of the classroom environment in Bentley’s $20M Smith Technology Center. In addition, participants meet with college advisors to learn about how to apply to college.

**Get Wired, Get Hired – a camp for girls, introducing them to the worlds of business and technology, how they intersect, and the rewards of IT / business careers.

Graduate School Programs

**Case Competitions – Each year, Bentley competes in regional and national case competitions as a tool for exposing undergraduate and graduate students to real business problems, while providing an opportunity to present solutions directly to corporate executives. Bentley sponsors the Bentley Business Bowl with National Association of Black Accountants, and competes nationally with ELC, NSHMBA, ALPFA, and National Black MBA Association where Bentley placed 3rd in 2003.

**Minority Scholars Summer Institute in Accountancy (MSSIA) – ALANA representation in the field of accounting remains unacceptably low. Bentley’s Minority Scholars Summer Institute in Accountancy (MSSIA) was formed in 1993 to address this problem by recruiting high achieving, ALANA undergraduates for an intensive summer program that encourages Hispanic and Black Liberal Arts students to pursue graduate study and careers in the field of accounting, through a combination of academic and professional components. In the four years of its existence, the MSSIA introduced approximately 96 minority undergraduates to accounting.

**McCallum Graduate School ALANA Open House – Through a new ALANA Open House program, Bentley’s McCallum Graduate School of Business will encourage 75 ALANA professionals and recent bachelor degree recipients to pursue graduate business education. Bentley has a long history of success with outreach programs. Approximately 1,200 prospective graduate students attended half-day open houses this past academic year. In addition, approximately 5,300 prospective undergraduate students attended open houses, campus tours, an ALANA overnight, and group programs.

**ALIANZA 2003 – ALIANZA is about coming together to work in unison toward a number of common goals and interests, both personally and professionally. In November 2003, the Bentley McCallum Graduate School of Business and Latino Professional Network (LPN) co-hosted the first annual networking event at Bentley for Hispanic/Latino professionals. Bentley and LPN were also joined by Boston’s 4 other elite Hispanic/Latino business organizations; Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA), Hispanic American Chamber of Commerce (HACC), National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) and Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). The event was host to more than 130 members and supporters of the Hispanic community and the thriving Latino business community of Greater Boston and beyond. ALIANZA 2004 will take place in Fall 2004, during which one half-to-full tuition scholarship will be presented to a member of each partner organization, with a total amount awarded to Bentley’s partners of more than $88,000.

**AsiaNetwork 2004 – AsiaNetwork spawned directly from the overwhelming success of ALIANZA 2003. In April 2004, the Bentley McCallum Graduate School of Business and National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP) co-hosted their first annual networking event at Bentley for Asian/Asian-American professionals. Bentley and NAAAP were honored to welcome more than 180 members and supporters of the Greater Boston Asian community. In addition to providing professional development, NAAAP’s National and Boston Presidents had a platform to launch their new branding campaign. Ending the evening, the first annual Bentley/NAAAP Graduate Merit Scholarship was presented in the amount of $19,710.
