Online Portal for Environmental Science and Conservation Education Launched by Paradise Earth

A free online magazine and information portal called Biomes (www. BiomesOnline. com) has been launched by members of the team behind Paradise Earth, a multi-phase project which includes a rainforest habitat and conservation center, an authority website (ParadiseEarth. com), and a television series. Biomes will be updated weekly with articles and resources to educate and promote awareness of environmental and conservation issues, including interviews with leading environmental experts.

Phoenix, Arizona (PRWEB) May 8, 2008

The team behind David Calvin's Paradise Earth Project (a multi-phase project centered around rainforest habitat and educational center being built near Phoenix) has just launched a free online magazine called Biomes (www. BiomesOnline. com). Biomes will serve as an information portal to educate the public about environmental and conservation issues, in line with the Paradise Earth mission.

The weekly magazine will feature weekly informative articles on environmental issues and exclusive interviews with environmental experts such as Dr. Thomas Lovejoy and the Smithsonian's Dr. Bill Laurance, two of the world's foremost rainforest scholars. Rare, high quality photographs and videos will also be available from Mandarich Media Group, featuring animals, plants, birds, and scenery from some of the world's endangered biomes. Multi-media recaps from the Paradise Earth Team's fact-finding and documentation trips abroad are also featured.

"Biomes is largely about education," says Tong Wu, the site's Editor-in-Chief. "The public can't care about rainforest conservation or other environmental issues if they're not aware of those issues. Biomes is designed to give the public a rare insider look at the world around them through exclusive expert interviews and photographs and footage of rare animals, birds, and plants they may otherwise never be exposed to. We're even currently in the process of developing a curriculum for secondary education geared towards environmental science and conservation issues, which we plan to make available to educators."

Environmental issues addressed by Biomes staff and contributors include topics such as biofuels, ecotourism, biodiversity, and rainforest habitats and conservation

About Biomes:
Biomes is an online magazine and information portal dedicated to promoting awareness and education of important environmental science and conservation issues. The production of Biomes was launched in May 2008 under Editor-in-Chief Tong Wu, and features informative articles, exclusive interviews with some of the world's leading environmental experts, and high quality photography, videos, and multi-media recaps featuring wildlife and scenery from fact-finding trips abroad.

BERLIN CANDY BOMBER WOULD VOLUNTEER TO FLY HUMANITARIAN MISSION AFTER WAR WITH IRAQ

BERLIN CANDY BOMBER WOULD VOLUNTEER TO FLY HUMANITARIAN MISSION AFTER WAR WITH IRAQ

Retired Air Force Col. Gail Halvorsen flew humanitarian missions over the skies of Germany after World War II. For three weeks he quietly dropped little parachutes of candy to the children before getting caught — and receiving permission to continue showering the children with treats.

(PRWEB) April 5, 2003

DAYTON, Ohio — After the war in Iraq ends, retired Air Force Col. Gail Halvorsen says he would fly over Baghdad in a heartbeat.

"When things get under control, I’d want to fly over schools and drop candy to the children,” he said. “The kids would go crazy.”

Halvorsen knows that from first-hand experience. Best known as the “Berlin candy bomber,” Halvorsen, 82, captivated faculty, students and military officials at the University of Dayton today as he relived his humanitarian mission over the skies of Germany after World War II. Halvorsen headlined the first day of a three-day “Aviation and the Human Experience” symposium sponsored by the Miami Valley Higher Education Consortium as part of Inventing Flight 2003’s yearlong tribute. The group includes Central State University, UD, Sinclair Community College and Wright State University.

Dressed in the same pilot’s jumpsuit he wore in the 1940s, he recounted how hungry children in Berlin taught him the importance of freedom. “They were just in elementary school, but had a post-graduate degree in international relations,” he said. “Their reaction to two sticks of gum changed my life.”

When the Soviets created a blockade around Berlin, Halvorsen and other American pilots started airlifting food, medicine and other supplies to the city as part of “Operation Vittles.” One day the 27-year-old pilot met and talked for about an hour with a group of 30 children across a barbed-wire fence at Tempelhof Base. He was taken aback when not one child put out his hand and asked for candy or gum.

“They started talking to me in their school English. ‘Don’t worry about us. Some day we’ll have enough to eat, but if we lose our freedom, we’ll never get it back,’” he remembered.

Usually when I wore my flight suit, kids would chase me down the street, thinking you were a rich American and a pipeline to a candy shop. They’d shake you down. Not one of these children would lower themselves to become a beggar.”

Halvorsen reached into his pocket, took out two sticks of gum, broke them in half and handed the pieces through the fence. “They looked like they had just received a million bucks. They put that tiny piece of paper to their noses and smelled the aroma. They were on cloud nine. I stood there dumbfounded,” he said.

Struck by an impulse and without permission, Halvorsen told the children he’d fly back the next day and drop more gum, but they’d have to share it. When they asked how they’d know his airplane, he said, “I’ll wiggle my wings.”

Halvorsen’s Air Force friends gave him their candy rations and for three weeks he quietly dropped little parachutes of candy to the children before getting caught — and receiving permission to continue showering the children with treats. In all, Halvorsen and his colleagues dropped 23 tons of candy.

“One child kept his Hershey bar for a week,” said Halvorsen, pointing out that it represented a better future. “He said, ‘Without hope, the soul dies. I can live on thin rations, but not without hope.’”

What did Halvorsen learn? “The kids at the fence taught me the importance of freedom. They put principle before pleasure. They taught me that whenever you have a tough decision to make, make it on principle.”

Halvorsen has reenacted his candy bomber airdrops on many occasions. In September 1989 he flew over Templehof with a television crew from “Good Morning America” commemorating the 40th anniversary of the last Berlin Airlift flight. In 1994, he flew on an Operation PROVIDE PROMISE C-130 mission over Bosnia and dropped candy parachutes to children. He continues to be involved in humanitarian missions and is participating in 100th anniversary of flight events in Ohio and North Carolina this year.

Lessons from Japan Illustrate Critical Importance of Utilities to Solar Growth in the U. S.

Washington, DC (Vocus) November 18, 2010

Despite obvious differences in the size and style of the utility-scale solar market in the two countries, there are clear parallels in how policy has shaped solar markets in both the United States and Japan. That is the main finding of a report released today by the Solar Electric Power Association (SEPA), entitled “Policy Changes Trigger Resurgence of Japan’s Solar Market.” SEPA organized a fact finding mission of utility leaders to Japan earlier this year as part of the organization’s ongoing commitment to helping utilities make smart solar decisions.

The fact finding mission, conducted in July, studied the experience of Japanese utilities and solar industry in integrating a large amount of distributed photovoltaics (PV) into the grid, explored the solar research initiatives undertaken by the Japanese government and its research bodies, and investigated the effect of Japan’s solar policies on the commercialization of solar technologies.

“Even though utility-owned solar generation is not a focus of Japanese utilities,” said Julia Hamm, SEPA President and CEO, “they know they have a major role to play in integrating customer-owned PV systems into the grid.”

The report details the key findings from meetings with Japanese utility and solar industry leaders, as well as tours of solar facilities. Key takeaways explored in the report include:

-- The motivations behind Japan’s renewed emphasis on aggressive solar development, including economic, environmental, energy security and resource diversity concerns.
-- The critical role for electric utilities in the successful implementation of federal policy and commercialization goals.
-- The research underway on the technical impacts of high concentrations of PV on the distribution grid.

After visiting Germany in 2008 and Spain in 2009, SEPA returns to Europe in 2011 when the organization will lead a fact finding mission to Italy in early May.

“The solar industry in Italy is enjoying unprecedented growth right now, and could be poised to join our other destinations among the world’s leading markets,” said Hamm. “The 2011 fact finding mission will provide our members with up-close looks at the Italian solar power industry and face-to-face meetings with Italy’s utility and solar decision makers.”

The final report on the 2010 fact finding mission to Japan is available free to members ($500 for non-members) at http://www. solarelectricpower. org/resources/reports. aspx.

For more information about SEPA’s fact finding missions, including the 2011 trip to Italy, visit SEPA’s website at http://www. solarelectricpower. org/events/fact-finding-missions. aspx.

The Chess Lady and ‘First Move’ Take Chess into the Classroom to Engage, Inspire and Educate

Chess is now inspiring second and third grade students around the country thanks to an innovative program from America’s Foundation for Chess: First Move. This award-winning program introduces chess – with the help of an unexpected classroom celebrity, The Chess Lady – as a learning tool to teach critical thinking skills, improve math, reading, behavioral and social skills, and build self-esteem and confidence in students.

Bellevue, WA (Vocus/PRWEB) January 17, 2011

Move over lunch lady… The Chess Lady is making her move to classrooms nationwide. Chess is now inspiring second and third grade students around the country thanks to an innovative program from America’s Foundation for Chess: First MoveTM. This award-winning program introduces chess – with the help of an unexpected classroom celebrity, The Chess Lady – as a learning tool to teach critical thinking skills, improve math, reading, behavioral and social skills, and build self-esteem and confidence in students. In 2010, First Move celebrated its 10th anniversary by engaging more than 50,000 students in nearly 2000 classrooms across 27 states. In 2011, America’s Foundation for Chess (AF4C) plans to expand the program to an additional 30,000 students nationwide.

“In nearly 30 nations around the world, chess is integrated into the country's scholastic curriculum,” says Wendi Fischer, AF4C Executive Director and “The Chess Lady.” “In the U. S., despite numerous studies that demonstrate the impact chess education can have on cognitive and critical thinking skills, chess is rarely incorporated into American schools. Our goal with First Move is to bring positive change to our educational system and make chess a regular part of every child’s classroom experience.”

AF4C created First Move to seamlessly introduce chess as a learning tool in second and third grade classrooms to support the existing academic and social programs. The curriculum is specifically mapped to standards for second and third grade. Not only are the students benefitting from the critical thinking, group problem solving, and social interaction, but they’re also having fun. They play to learn, not to win, so they transfer the intellectual, social and emotional qualities from the game of chess to school and real world success.

“Students tend to be tentative and want someone else to do their work for them, give them the answer, or figure it out for them,” says Jill Massa, principal, Warden Elementary School (Warden, WA). “But with the chess games that they play as part of First Move, they are forced to think for themselves in a fun way which builds their confidence.”

According to a study conducted by Education Northwest in 2009, more than half of First Move parents found learning chess helped improve their child’s grades and more than 62% credited the chess education program with improving their child’s attitude toward school.

First Move began in 2000 and was introduced to its first classrooms in the Seattle area a few years later. It has grown and is primarily supported through individual and corporate donations, with a nominal fee for participating classrooms or school districts. First Move is offered during the school day as a supplemental curriculum to the existing core curriculum. Teachers do not need to know chess; they can learn along with their students as The Chess Lady introduces the game step-by-step via interactive videos. The focus is not on competition or tournament play, but rather on the thinking skills that are an inherent part of chess. First Move promotes courtesy toward others; students learn to shake hands before and after a game, respect rules and think ahead.

New Trend: Eating Disorders Becoming More Prominent In Midlife Women

New Trend: Eating Disorders Becoming More Prominent In Midlife Women

Revival® Soy products can help women achieve balance.

Kernersville, NC (PRWEB) December 13, 2005

Winston-Salem, NC (PRWEB) December 13, 2005 -- Eating disorders have become an emerging trend for midlife women, which leads to concern about the detrimental affects it can have on women’s health. Experts are calling this epidemic Runaway Eating and are promoting nutrition education and the adoption of a healthier, well-balanced diet. Revival® Soy’s line of soy-based foods is an effective way to manage weight and balance hormones, while promoting a healthier eating lifestyle.

While serious eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia have long been the bane of teenage girls, more and more midlife women are suffering from similar but milder forms of problematic eating. These problems include occasional bouts of out-of-control eating, weight preoccupation, pathological dieting, compulsive exercising, binging and binge-and-purge episodes. Runaway Eating is defined as the gray area that lies somewhere between healthy eating and an actual eating disorder.

Nadine Taylor, a registered dietitian and co-author of the book Runaway Eating (Rodale, 2005) says that midlife women are under incredible amounts of stress, and may fall into Runaway Eating behaviors as a way to make themselves feel better. “Runaway Eating involves using food to run away from your problems,” Taylor says. “You feel depressed, so you head for the chocolate cake. You’re anxious, so you eat an entire box of cookies or push yourself through a long, exhausting workout. What you’re really doing is running from stress, anxiety, depression, or the feeling that you’re just not ‘perfect’ enough. But afterwards you can feel even worse, and turn to other unhealthy ways of easing emotional pain.”

The negative cycle of Runaway Eating can be set off or made worse by the hormonal changes of menopause. Female hormones fluctuate wildly during perimenopause, when estrogen levels often swing from too high to too low. Too much estrogen causes bloating, sugar cravings and mood swings, making a woman feel fat, hungry and depressed. Too little estrogen causes depression, anxiety, hot flashes, and night sweats, making her feel fatigued, irritable and lacking in energy. Either extreme could set off a cycle of restrictive dieting, binging, purging—or all three—especially in women who are already stressed to the breaking point.

One way to balance estrogen levels and put the brakes on Runaway Eating, says Taylor, is to eat plenty of soy. While soy is known for easing hot flashes, it may also help ward off the mood swings, anxiety and irritability associated with hormonal changes that can trigger Runaway Eating.

Taylor explains, ”Soy can compete with your own estrogen for receptor sites on the cells, blocking out some of your own hormone and lowering estrogen levels.”

Soy may also help fight Runaway Eating in other ways: Studies have shown that it decreases hunger, extends the period of feeling “full” and stabilizes the blood sugar. Taylor notes that “Stabilizing your blood sugar can go a long way toward stabilizing your mood. And if you feel good, you’re much less likely to turn to food-related behaviors to try to regain your balance.”

Taylor advises a daily intake of about 100-160 milligrams of soy isoflavones—about what you’d find in 6 glasses of soy milk or 6 servings of tofu—and between 20 and 25 grams of soy protein. Those who can’t handle that much soy every day (not to mention the 24 grams of fat that may come along with it!) could get the same benefits from a soy shake or soy bar by Revival® Soy. Each soy shake or soy bar provides 16-20 grams of high-quality soy protein in one serving and less than 10 grams fat.

A lot of soy products taste bland or chalky, but the Revival® Soy products are designed to be effective and tasty. Revival® Soy also offers several other soy products, including soy chips, soy nuts, soy coffee and soy pastas, all of which are delicious and easy ways to boost your soy intake—and put the brakes on Runaway Eating.

Revival® Soy (http://www. RevivalSoy. com (http://www. RevivalSoy. com)) products are based on a proprietary soy formula, using a patented natural concentration process, developed by Aaron Tabor, MD. Revival® Soy is recommended by more doctors than any other soy protein supplement because of its high isoflavone content, high-quality protein, clinically backed research and superb taste. Just one Revival® Soy bar or shake provides the same amount of hunger-reducing, health-enhancing soy isoflavones found in 6 cups of soy milk, but with 90% less fat. The line includes soy bars, shakes, chips, pasta, nuts and coffee.

Revival Soy participates in double-blinded, placebo-controlled human clinical studies at some of America's top medical schools and hospitals. The company currently has 30 Revival studies at various stages of design or completion. For more information, log onto www. RevivalSoy. com

Abused horse finds a new life and new responsibilities at Nature's Place Therapy Services

A Horse’s “Rags to Riches” Drama. . .

ABBY, A FORMERLY ABUSED HORSE, WILL NOW HELPKIDS AND ADULTS IN THEIR THERAPY PROGRAMS

(PRWEB) August, 2003 -- Abby, a 16-year-old quarter horse that endured severe neglect and abuse before she was rescued in Oct. 2002 by the Polk County, Fla., County SheriffÂ’s Department will have both a new home and new responsibilities at NatureÂ’s Place Therapy, which is located in a serene, farm-like setting at Davenport, close to Orlando.

Abby will arrive at Nature’s Place on Sat., Aug. 16, in her “rags to riches” drama.

Donated to Nature’s Place by Dr. Theresa Nenezian, of God’s Helping Hands Therapeutic Riding Center at Lake Wales, Abby was “adopted” by Nenezian after the sheriffs found Abby in her dismal condition. Abby was given love, shelter, health services, and other rehabilitations at Lake Wales.

Abbey will now live a rich life at NatureÂ’s Place working with kids and adults who have impairments and neuromusculoskeletal dysfunctions.

The gentle, chestnut-colored mare that stands 14 hands tall will help specially trained therapists at NatureÂ’s Place provide treatments to clients who suffer conditions such as Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis, learning or language disabilities, or traumatic brain injury.

“By having Abby donated to us, we can now expand our rehabilitation services to include hippotherapy—the use of a horse in a client’s treatments,” Deborah Adams, director of Nature’s Place Therapy said.

“We already have a waiting list of 26 clients who can benefit from hippotherapy,” she added.

Hippotherapy is so named from the Greek root-word “hippos,” meaning horse and does not refer to Africa’s 4,000-pound hippopotamus. Hippotherapy is defined by the American Hippotherapy Association as “a term that refers to the use of the movement of a horse as a treatment tool” by physical, occupational, and speech-language therapists.

In hippotherapy, the movement of the horse becomes a treatment tool by therapists to help improve impaired balance, coordination, and communication. Hippotherapy can also help improve poor postural control, and gross motor skills involved in sitting, standing, and walking.

It also provides numerous mental, psychological, and emotional benefits, as well as sensory and educational benefits. The therapeutic benefits of the horse were recognized as early as 460 BC. Eventually, the use of the horse in therapy spread throughout Europe, the United States, and Canada.

“We are delighted to welcome Abby to her new home with us,” Adams said. “The equine-assisted therapy with Abby will be available as soon as a corral and small pole barn are completed. Much of that work will be done by volunteers at our 2nd Annual Old Fashioned Barn Raising that will take place Sat., Aug. 16.” She said more volunteers will be welcomed to help.

NatureÂ’s Place Therapy is a not-for-profit corporation that serves those who live in Lake, Polk, Orange, and Osceola counties. Therapy is provided to any and all who need it, regardless of payment capabilities. Call 863/421-0556 about therapy programs or volunteer opportunities.

Atlanta, GA (Vocus) August 11, 2010

Silent Partner PI of Atlanta Georgia chooses Click Ready Marketing as his firm’s on-line marketing agency. Silent Partner PI provides investigative services to assist individuals or businesses with cases that vary from cheating spouses, fraud, computer forensics, theft, missing persons, and workers comp. Silent Partner PI realizes that most prospective clients use the internet to research and find private detectives to handle these types of cases. That is why they decided to hire an internet marketing company.

This Atlanta Investigative Service (http://www. silentpartnerpi. com/) handles and serves clients throughout Georgia. The firm has earned a reputation for being thorough and discreet. They really work to get to the facts. Private Investigator is an umbrella term that can cover many different kinds of investigations. This is why the internet is the best place for the firm to advertise. Click Ready Marketing has experience in assisting service based businesses by increasing their web presence and focusing their on-line message. This Georgia SEO Company (http://www. clickreadymarketing. com/) understands the value of Silent Partner’s offering and how they can positively affect (as much as possible) the outcomes lives with the discovery of the truth.

Silent Partner PI has had many interesting cases involving politicians, high profile missing persons and cheating spouse cases. These are just a snapshot of the types of cases that Silent Partner PI can handle. One of their detective’s states; ‘when the stakes are high, Silent Partner PI is who to call.” Here are just a few of the case types their investigative team can handle if the need arise.

? CHEATING SPOUSE-You know that your spouse has been cheating on you but you have no proof. Before you start the divorce proceedings you want to make sure that you can prove your case. Silent Partner PI can gather the evidence you need to take to court.

? CORPORATE THEFT - Some one has managed to steal funds from your corporation but the thief was computer savvy and covered his tracks by deleting files and crashing hard drives. An Atlanta Investigator (http://silentpartnerpi. com/index. php? option=com_content&view=article&id=4&Itemid=8) trained in computer forensics can still recover data from a crashed hard drive in most cases and once that it done they can trace file usage and network access back to the perpetrator.

? BACKGROUND CHECKS – Many companies already run background checks on their employees and sometimes their clients but how reliable is that data? If there was a mistake when it was being keyed in or if the data has not been verified on a regular basis then something could be missed. When you use a PI firm like Silent Partner PI, you know that the information is correct and recent. They will perform a criminal background search as well as interview neighbors and co-workers. They are able to perform credit checks as well as drug screening. Plus, all the important information like date of birth, address, employment history and education will be verified by the investigator personally.

? FRAUD INVESTIGATIONS – These are cases built upon someone using misrepresentation with the intent to deceive. For instance, if a person walks into your restaurant and slips on a wet floor then tries to sue the company because they are injured so badly that they are confined to a wheelchair. You may be 99% sure that they are lying and are not injured at all but how do you get proof? You hire the best Atlanta Private Detective agency available.

? LOSS PREVENTION – This is the polite term for your employees or customers stealing from you. They may be shoplifting clothes or grazing through the candy aisle on break but either way it starts to add up to significant lost revenue. If you do not have a full time security force on hand then it is a good idea to hire a PI to watch your merchandise. The savings from preventing the loss is usually more than enough to offset the price of a good PI

? WORKERS COMP – These cases are very similar to fraud cases but it is limited to the employees of the company. Some employees will fake an injury in order to stop working and start receiving insurance money. This can hurt the company because of the lost manpower and it gives other people the idea that it may not be safe to work there. Plus the additional insurance payout to people that don’t deserve may make some that does deserve the money unable to get it. That why many businesses know it is smart to hire an Altanta PI (http://silentpartnerpi. com/blog/) .

Due to the variety of investigator cases that occur; it is difficult for an Atlanta Private Investigator (http://silentpartnerpi. com/blog/2010/07/atlanta-private-investigations/) to effectively promote the full aspects of their services via traditional media outlets. The messages have to be short and targeted. Click Ready Marketing is able to open new pathways for internet searchers to find information they are seeking. This includes detective agencies. The internet provides the medium that searchers digging for information can find and use. Click Ready Marketing helps people discover Silent Partner PI Atlanta’s best PI service team.

Flexibility, Efficiency, Security of State-level Assessments Enhanced with Latest Upgrades to Comprehensive Online Testing Delivery System

Flexibility, Efficiency, Security of State-level Assessments Enhanced with Latest Upgrades to Comprehensive Online Testing Delivery System

Pearson launches TestNav 7 and new content caching server technologies.

Iowa City, IA (PRWEB) September 15, 2009

Today, the Assessment and Information Group of Pearson announced significant new upgrades to its TestNav 7 online test delivery platform and local content caching server technology. These technologies currently deliver millions of secure, high-stakes assessments in K-12 schools every year. More than 4 million such assessments have been delivered on the TestNav platform to date in 2009.

TestNav 7 eliminates the need for software installation at the local level prior to the administration of tests to students. Now, students will be able to use a standard web browser to launch TestNav 7 and take a high-stakes test with ease.

"By delivering TestNav via a browser, schools don't have to worry about software updates or unnecessary software downloads - saving time and money," said Dianne Losh, product manager, online testing, for the Assessment and Information Group of Pearson. "The new centralized system gives individual districts the freedom they need to administer high-stakes assessments anytime from anywhere."

As a companion product, Pearson's content caching server seamlessly integrates with TestNav to help schools simply set up assessments, cache content and monitor usage during online testing sessions. The centralized setup eliminates the need to locally configure TestNav 7. In addition, easy-to-use dashboards and interfaces enable local system administrators to monitor the progress and effectiveness of the caching service.

This combination of technologies has been used since 2001 to deliver secure, high-stakes assessments in grades K-12, and the latest upgrades reduce the workload for schools in the management and delivery of online tests.

"TestNav 7.0 offers a 21st century testing solution that meets the needs of teachers, administrators and all students, including those with disabilities. Pearson's TestNav provides administrators with a variety of test scheduling options, test-taking tools and test-taking accommodations for their students. As with prior versions of TestNav, the new version meets all of the stringent security, performance, scalability and reliability requirements teachers have come to expect from our product. Teachers can administer tests without worrying. And students find the testing interface very engaging, which improves motivation, concentration and performance," said Wayne Ostler, vice president, product development with Pearson's A&I group.

TestNav supports a wide range of testing tools and item types using Adobe Flash® technology. Item types include the traditional multiple choice and open-ended essay or short response items, as well as more innovative items, such as drag-and-drop, hotspot, graphing, charting, math equations and full simulations. By separating the content presentation from the delivery engine, TestNav enables content development teams to have complete control over item presentation, navigation, response controls and overall look-and-feel of the testing experience. Meeting the needs of all students, TestNav also supports adaptive tests and linear test form delivery.

Holidays with Aging Parents: Elder Care Expert Has the Prescription for Caregiver Stress

Holidays with Aging Parents: Elder Care Expert Has the Prescription for Caregiver Stress

For many families, the problem with the holidays is family. Elder care expert Esther Koch provides insight into how caregivers of aging parents can bring the joy of the holiday season to the elder care experience.

San Mateo, CA (PRWEB) December 2, 2008

For many families the stress of the holiday season is family, especially aging parents. Gerontologist and elder care expert Esther Koch (http://www. encoremgmt. com/estherkoch. html), founder of Encore Management (http://www. encoremgmt. com/aboutencoremanagement. html), has a simple yet highly effective prescription for holiday stress relief….reframe the experience. "Use the holidays to change the focus from all that you have to do for your parent to all the experiences you can have with your parent", recommends Koch who also was the primary caregiver to her mother (http://www. encoremgmt. com/momentsofjoy/kissthejoy. html) for ten years.

"Your holidays will be joyful if you intend them to be", says Koch. "You may have to start with forgiveness - forgive your parents, forgive your siblings and forgive yourself." She emphasizes, "A little forgiveness can eliminate years of regret."

Koch continues, "As a caregiver, you do need to recognize your parent's limits as well as your own." Adjust commitments whenever necessary for health reasons and don't forget to schedule time for yourself. "Most of all, be in the moment and don't take for granted that your parent will always be as physically and mentally able as they are now", she says.

Koch suggestions the following to make holiday memories. "With just a little thought, the possibilities are limitless and the results may turn out to be some of the most memorable times you will ever share with your parent", she says.

Go to a holiday lighting event; take a drive to see neighborhood Christmas decorations; check out the holiday shopping windows; or buy and trim the tree together.

Go to the Nutcracker or a choir concert; participate in a sing-a-long Messiah; or attend a Christmas Eve service. Rent a holiday movie or watch a holiday TV special.

Visit old family friends or visit the neighborhoods of holidays past. Bring out the old photo albums; take lots of new pictures and print them up right away; or have a family photo with Santa.

Donate food or clothing to a food bank or homeless shelter. Make some special holiday treats or buy some already made.

Teach your parents to shop online or do anything, or everything, with grandchildren.

Koch concludes, "May your life be filled with no regrets; may you see the extraordinary in the ordinary; and may someone be there to brighten your world as you age."

Esther Koch is available for interview. For more info contact: Lorna Garano: lorna garano @ gmail. com or (510) 922-9765

Each time a member clicks over to the Ribbon Nutrition website, their “click-through” is linked back to the non-profit organization. From there, Ribbon Nutrition will donate 30% of the shopper’s total purchase to non-profit organizations. The program is further supported by customized marketing support that the company creates for each individual organization. To view a sample, visit http://www. ribbonnutrition. com/ad/young (http://www. ribbonnutrition. com/ad/young).

Ribbon Nutrition’s AFRP has several other unique features. A pitfall of many affiliate programs is that they work the first time when a member “clicks-through,” but do not continue to raise money for the organization when members go back to the website for a subsequent purchase. To address this, Ribbon Nutrition created a system where shoppers cannot purchase Ribbon Nutrition products on their website without “clicking-through” a non-profit organization or choosing a non-profit organization that their purchase will benefit. The logos and websites of the participating non-profit organizations are displayed on the Ribbon Nutrition website for the shopper to choose from and can be viewed at http://www. ribbonnutrition. com/locate/locate. php (http://www. ribbonnutrition. com/locate/locate. php).

Ribbon Nutrition’s Affiliate Fund-Raising Program is also designed to offer more than just supplements. Each purchase from the site in October will also include a free subscription to the natural lifestyle magazine inPink as well as other educational materials on diet, nutrition, and other lifestyle factors that may help prevent Breast Cancer. Visitors to the website will also have the option to sign-up for Life Saving Email

(http://www. lifesavingemail. com (http://www. lifesavingemail. com)), a free Breast Self Exam Reminder System and Healthy Lifestyle e-Newsletter offered by Pink Penguin Press, a non-profit organization focused on education and empowerment. Participating non-profit organizations are invited to send educational information to Ribbon Nutrition for disbursement with orders from the Affiliate Program website.

CARES Kids Fly Safe Airline Safety Harness was invented by a grandmother who wanted to make air travel safer for young children. Louise Stall's entrepreneurial journey ultimately led to a patent and partnership with AmSafe, manufacturer of most of today's airline seatbelts. After four years of development and safety testing, the FAA certified the CARES system as the first and only alternative to car seats allowed on planes. Unlike car seats, it weighs only one pound and fits in a carry-on bag. CARES is a great gift for grandparents to give to parents for their littlest grandchildren -- and if they don't live close by, it's an incentive for them to hop on a plane to come visit! Three Cups, a new children's book by Mark St. Germain, retells the story of the three 'old coffee cups' a boy received from his parents for his fifth birthday… a present, his parents explained, that would 'take him on many adventures.' The boy's initial disappointment eventually leads to excitement over the meaning behind the three cups - one for saving, one for spending, and one to use towards a charity of his choice. The lessons in this beautifully illustrated book are simple and classic, and do not read as preachy. Instead, they make up an engaging story that will encourage children and families to easily put the principles into practice. The multi-talented, award-winning actress, poet, speaker and host, Venus Jones performed poems from her new book "She Rose, on journey from girl to Goddess." The phrase of the night was "Always Divine!"

Kathy Perry, founder of www. PeakPerformanceWomen. com, said, "I was delighted to be a part of this first annual Gods and Goddesses Party. But more than that, I was very moved by the inspiring performance by Venus as she shared poems from her new book, "She Rose", with us -- she doesn't just read poetry, her poetry comes alive when she performs!"

Guests sipped on wine and walked on petals while wearing togas and modern day fashions. They listened to new age music, toasted to life and progress. In addition, the guests were able to enjoy the Roby MacDougall art exhibit that was on display at The Studio@620. Prizes were awarded to the best toga costumes. Addiction Interventionist Comments on Whitney Houston's interview with Oprah

Addiction Interventionist Comments on Whitney Houston's interview with Oprah

Professional Atlanta Addiction Interventionist cites proven advances in care for addiction and mental health problems as leading to positive long term outcomes. Celebrities such as Whitney Houston, Keith Urban, Melanie Griffith and more represent how expert guidance, such as employing a professional interventionist, can help families, friends and employers get their loved one healthy again.

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) September 16, 2009

Familiar faces in the news, such as Whitney Houston on Oprah this week, speak candidly about the addiction interventions that saved their lives. Most Americans do not realize that substance abuse and mental health problems are chronic illnesses similar in many ways to diabetes, cancer, etc. In fact, the National Institute on Drug Addiction, NIDA, reports that when alcoholism and drug abuse are treated as long term, chronic illnesses, success rates are comparable to those realized with other chronic health problems. Like all chronic illnesses, long term continuity of care that is overseen by an expert in that specific illness is vital.

The earliest intervention of any chronic illness is always best. The longer an illness progresses the harder it is to reverse and heal. Unfortunately, many families believe the old stereotype that addicts have to "hit bottom" to get better. Yet according to NIDA research, treatment for addiction and mental health does not need to begin voluntarily to be effective. In fact, "The lower the bottom the harder it becomes to ever return to the surface" says Susan Rosovsky, Atlanta addiction interventionist. Anyone caught in the confusion of alcohol, drugs, prescriptions, and / or mental health problems are by definition incapable of making consistently healthy choices and require professional expertise to help get their minds healthy again. Working with a specialist will offer significant advantages that save families time, money, and emotional pain in the long run.

Celebrities are not the only ones with access the best in addiction and mental health treatment. Many families have spent enormous amounts of time and energy straightening out consequences and reacting to crisis after crisis resulting from their loved ones substance abuse, mental health and behavioral problems. What they don't know is why and how to find an expert that provides long term continuous guidance for the entire family. Yet no where is this more important than with substance abuse and mental health problems. Traditional psychiatry and counseling are most often not the answer. Research shows intervention to be successful 85% to 95% of the time. Truly successful outcomes for any serious illness require a variety of "interventions"- based on the latest research to include medicine, nutrition, education, relational support, etc. A professional interventionist will provide oversight and continuity to permanently raise the bottom of the entire family of those suffering from addiction and mental illness.

Susan Rosovsky LPC, CCADC, BRI, founder of ProActive Interventions, is one the countries rare, professionally licensed and trained interventionists, offering nationwide assistance for families in crisis. Her credentials represent extensive training, experience, and licensed governed ethics that are critical to helping navigate the maze of mental health and substance abuse treatment. More information is available by calling 678.662.1892 or online at www. ProActiveInterventions. com.

New Massage Therapy Certificate Program Enables Students to Reach Career Goals and Enter Workforce Faster

New Program from Boulder College of Massage Therapy Offers Students Innovative Curriculum and Comprehensive Training in Only Nine Months

Boulder, CO (PRWEB) April 7, 2010

Recognizing that the current economic climate is forcing many potential students to make tough decisions about their education plans, the Boulder College of Massage Therapy (http://www. bcmt. org) (BCMT) has unveiled a new massage therapy certificate program that enables students to receive superior, comprehensive training and graduate as a certified massage therapist in only nine months. Upon completion of the required 760 hours of coursework, BCMT graduates have the ability to work part-time or full-time and can typically earn an average wage of $45 an hour (including tips) for all massage related work. (2010 AMTA Massage Therapy Industry Fact Sheet).

“Students tell us that they want to enter the workforce as quickly as possible, but not at the expense of quality education and training,” said Carol Brunelli, Director of Enrollment at BCMT. “We understand and admire that motivation, so in response designed this Massage Therapy Certificate Program to fit their educational and financial needs accordingly.”

BCMT’s full-time certificate program is based on an innovative curriculum that includes hands-on course work and learning in the following massage techniques: Zen Shiatsu, Swedish Therapeutic Massage, Normalization of Soft Tissue, Integrative Therapeutic Massage and Practitioner Skills for Special Populations & Conditions. Unlike other massage therapy programs, BCMT offers students a unique mix of personal and professional development courses and service learning opportunities in addition to their standard coursework. This inclusive training approach enables students to explore the complex issues related to building and growing therapeutic relationships while also enhancing their learning by engaging with local community groups.

In addition to BCMT’s Massage Therapy Certificate Program, BCMT also offers an Associate of Occupational Studies (AOS) Degree and Continuing Education that allow massage therapists to explore new areas, expand their techniques and gain specialized certifications.
