Editorial Freelancing: 5 Steps to Getting Your Foot in the Door

Editorial Freelancing: 5 Steps to Getting Your Foot in the Door

My mother was fond of saying, "If you want to know something, go directly to the source." Taking this advice to heart, I interviewed professionals in the industry for the e-book, How to Really Make a Living as an Editorial Freelancer. Publishers, editorial directors, human resource managers and editors, among others were a vocal lot regarding freelancers and what they should/should not do to get their foot in the door.

(PRWEB) August 28, 2003

What nuggets of information can you glean from them? Here are five concrete points about which they were adamant.

1. Know your craft: Most clients like to see direct experience. This usually means working in the industry full-time for a number of years before going out on your own as a freelancer.

A vice president of publishing at a major trade publisher says, "Experience is key for us. Three to five years minimum, with a proven track record on our types of books. We don't linger over education, but I suspect most have a four-year degree."

As an editorial recruiter, I generally advise two to three years of full-time experience in the position/discipline for which you want to freelance. Five or more is better. Also, provide samples — published or unpublished. If unpublished — say so.

2. Time: Don't pester and/or waste the time of those in a position to hire. One editor responded, "Don't call me and call me and call me. I would actually NOT hire someone who calls me after I've said I'd call them."

Additionally, find the right person to contact. Most agreed that you should bypass the human resources department and contact the editorial department directly. Why? It is rare that materials will be passed on to the right person, especially if they are in another department.

3. Rate: Most companies have pre-determined rates and wiggle room is tight, if nonexistent.

An editorial director at an educational publisher commented, "We have a standard freelancer's rate for whatever discipline is involved — copyediting, graphic design, etc. Occasionally, a project will come along for which we'll make special arrangements. These can include special rates, working on premises, etc. I also try to be flexible while working within departmental budgets."

Usually, after you've worked with a client for a while, you can adjust your fees. Although, not by much. Editorial, especially general trade, is notoriously low paying.

4. Contact: Email seems to be the preferred method. However, to cover all bases, if you contact via email first, send a follow-up note with your credentials via snail mail. Remember, keep all contact brief and to the point. And please, do not send samples unless/until they are requested.

These are not more likely to get you a call back. If anything, it's presumptuous and can frustrate a potential client. Desks are usually pretty full without figuring out where to put more stuff.

If your skills are sufficient AND a client has the need for your type of service, your resume / credentials alone will get you an interview.

5. Professional Presentation of Material: A Director of Public Information at a large nonprofit noted, "This should be implicit, but I wouldn't be mentioning it if in fact it was — any material that is sent should be neatly presented and visually clear with no typos, correct grammar, etc. Material should demonstrate that: (1) you know your job; and (2) you care about it, hence the potential client will care also."

An editor at a financial magazine added, "On a resume, I look for copy editing accuracy and consistency (if you can't copy edit your own resume, how can I count on you to copy edit my magazine?)."

I know you're sending out tons of materials to many contacts. To avoid this problem, try to spend one day organizing and preparing your material, and another day to do the actual mailing.

I've found that most errors occur when you try to do everything in one day. Breaking marketing down into parts helps to simplify the process, thereby cutting down on the chance of mistakes.

So, there you have it. Although no one method can guarantee success, focusing on these areas will boost your chance of landing more clients.

From the Villages of India to the Suburbs of America - the Book that Can Help Millions to Read

From the Villages of India to the Suburbs of America - the Book that Can Help Millions to Read

BookBox, the long-awaited innovation from a team of Stanford social entrepreneurs, promises to revolutionize the way we read and learn. Find out more at bookbox. com

Mountain View, CA (PRWEB) April 20, 2005

If your idea of learning a new language means plowing through endless stacks of cassette tapes, think again. Thanks to BookBox, the innovative brainchild of a team of Stanford University students, a language - learning revolution is about to begin.

In a nutshell, BookBox is a digital "jukebox" of animated books, each available in multiple languages ranging from Spanish and French to Hindi and Chinese. Based on the science of Same Language Subtitling (SLS), BookBox synchronizes the text, audio, and visual media so that your 4 year-old child can now read a story on his own -- simply by listening to the narration and following it word by word in the subtitles. Or if your child wants to learn Spanish, she can simply turn on English and Spanish subtitles, and listen to a Spanish audio narration.

You get the idea: www. bookbox. com

Non-English speakers in the US, especially young children, will find BookBox particularly useful as a language-learning tool. With its beautiful illustrations, dynamic animation and colorful narration, BookBox essentially turns a regular storybook into an educational cartoon that kids can "watch."

At the same time, Bookbox is very much a global product, where children from all over the world can learn to read, in any language they want.

The BookBox innovation comes at a particularly propitious time, when globalization is the new buzzword and multilingualism can be worth more than a college degree.

Yet the beauty of BookBox lies not just in its multi-lingual interface, but in its simple ability to make reading truly universal, in a way never before experienced.

It gives rise to a reading revolution, where the illiterate who have traditionally been helpless with books, can now proudly carry one in hand and be able to read it - on their own.

"The educational problem of the world is not that we don't have enough top-notch scientists and engineers, it's that we have over a billion people who cannot read the headline of a newspaper," says Brij Kothari, BookBox co-founder.

Armed with the brilliantly simple idea of subtitling animated books, Brij rounded up a team of Stanford University undergraduates in early 2004 to help develop BookBox.

It has only been a year, but BookBox has come a long way. Currently BookBox is available online at www. bookbox. com, and all of its 6 original stories can be downloaded for free. In the future, BookBox stories will also be released in DVD, mp3 formats, and even TV!

Within the 3-month launch of its young website, BookBox has already generated a buzz with users around the globe. As one BookBoxer describes: "Finally, a book without boundaries - from the language enthusiast in France to the illiterate peasant in China. BookBox is truly universal."

Toronto Pictures Completes Ghana Filming of “Punctured Hope” and Brings New African Talent to Canadian Production Company’s Studio

Toronto Pictures Completes Ghana Filming of “Punctured Hope” and Brings New African Talent to Canadian Production Company’s Studio

Veteran filmmaker, Bruno Pischiutta, President and CEO of Toronto Pictures, Inc., has just completed filming his newest docu-drama, Punctured Hope, in Ghana.

(PRWEB) September 7, 2005

Veteran filmmaker, Bruno Pischiutta, President and CEO of Toronto Pictures, Inc., has just completed filming his newest docu-drama, Punctured Hope, in Ghana, where the movie has been in production for some six weeks. Punctured Hope not only reveals the startling ages-old tribal cultural practice of Trokosi that promotes the continued enslavement, mutilation and sexual abuse of West AfricaÂ’s young girls and women, it does so with an all-African cast, whose lead actress is, herself, a survivor of these culturally imbedded religious beliefs which have affected millions of African women over the past 300 years.

Preparatory to the filmÂ’s production, and in concert with his vision for a diaspora of global film schools to engender professional cinematography, in May 2005, Pischiutta founded the Film Academy of Ghana, the first such institution in West Africa. The Ghanian Academy was established through the collaborative efforts of native African Evangelical pastor, Kingsley Sam Obed. Obed, who wrote the screenplay for Punctured Hope together with Pischiutta, is an active partner in Toronto PicturesÂ’ efforts to raise global awareness regarding Trokosi.

Pischiutta’s Ghanian Academy has already helped to cultivate and refine the acting skills of a number of native West African actors whose prospective careers hinge largely on the experience and exposure derived at the Academy. Foremost among them is Ms. Belinda Siamey, whose portrayal of “Edinam” in Punctured Hope is an eloquent reflection of the young actor’s own tragic life experiences as a victim of Trokosi.

“Fostering new talent in the developing world is a thrilling experience for all of us at Toronto Pictures,” says Pischiutta. “In founding the Ghana Academy, our intent was to discover and develop new talent in West Africa. Belinda’s extraordinary work in our latest film is testimony to the effectiveness of our mission; she’s a budding Meryl Streep whose expansive talents are only just beginning to blossom.”

Pischiutta has signed Ms. Siamey, and four of her colleagues – Mr. Samuel Ruffy Quansah, Jr., Ms. Faustina Pinnock Asiedu, Ms. Joyce Tonye Akagbo and Ms. Seayram Esamboye – who likewise appeared in Punctured Hope, to extended contracts with Toronto Pictures, where their collective talents will be nurtured in the CompanyÂ’s future projects.

Toronto Pictures is donating 10% of Punctured HopeÂ’s profits to a West African foundation whose priority is the provision of enhanced educational, medical and infrastructural improvements to the village where the movie is being filmed.

The film, which is slated for release in the U. S. in the summer of 2006, is being co-produced by Transcontinental Film Financing Company. In addition to serving as the filmÂ’s Director, Pischiutta is the projectÂ’s Executive Producer with Toronto PicturesÂ’ Vice President, Daria Trifu.

Toronto Pictures is committed to developing and marketing films that are financially viable, yet violence-free. Targeting a global audience, Toronto Pictures addresses broad-based topical issues in a dramatic format, often combined with documentary genre influences. Now in partnership with International Film Properties, Inc., the Company is seeking to expand its operations by acquiring equity in selected entertainment industry-based agencies in Eastern Europe.

Women Wonder Where to Get Fuller Lips Like Angelina Jolie: Infini Cosmetic Associates Offers Specials on Lip Augmentation with Fillers, Like Restylane and Juvederm

Women Wonder Where to Get Fuller Lips Like Angelina Jolie: Infini Cosmetic Associates Offers Specials on Lip Augmentation with Fillers, Like Restylane and Juvederm

More and more women are requesting fuller, thicker and more voluptuous lips, like Oscar winner Angelina Jolie. A majority of women are not born with the full, pouty lips like Jolie, but the procedures that add body and plump up the pucker, do not require celebrity income. Infini Cosmetic Associates is offering specials on lip augmentation fillers. Now that actress Lisa Rinna admitted she cosmetically enhanced her lips in her book "Rinnavation," woman are more curious that ever about how fillers like Restylane and Juvederm can "fulfill" their Lipspectations!

Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) June 29, 2009

Women and men alike flock to the big screen to see movies, starring Angelina Jolie - just to see her gorgeous persona, and those lips. She is featured in magazines, blogs and is the subject of conversations everywhere, because people are obsessed with the voluminous shape of her mouth. Men desire her, and women desire to be her, because of those famous lips. Infini Cosmetic Associates "fulfills" expectations with summer specials on lip augmentation fillers.

Lip augmentation is easier than most people think. It is a quick, easy and virtually pain-free procedure that can produce immediate results and make a dramatic improvement in one's appearance. Scottsdale-based Infini Cosmetic Associates Founder and Chief Surgeon, Dr. William Hall has many years of experience with Restylane and Juvederm - the newest and safest materials for lip enhancement. Lip augmentation procedures have evolved a great deal over the last five years. Restylane and Juvederm are the latest fillers available, giving the longest lasting results.

"I get so many requests from women who want fuller, more sensuous lips, like Angelina Jolie," stated Dr. William Hall. "Our simple lip augmentation procedure can accentuate lip borders, add body to the lips, and help eliminate fine lines that immediately surround the lips, using Restylane and Juvederm injections, and my clients really love the results they get from the procedure," Hall proclaimed.

Beautiful and supple lips can add a more youthful and softer appearance to your face. Restylane and Juvederm are both Hyaluronic Acid fillers, and each injection lasts up to six months. These fillers are safe and last longer and longer after repetitive injections over time.

"It is really quite amazing," Hall enthused. "The first injection produces 3 to 6 month results, but upon the second and third injections, the Restylane and Juvederm product builds up layers, and can hold its volume and visible plumpness for up to a year," he concluded.

Dr. Hall has performed over 5000 injections with multiple fillers over the past several years and serves as part of the educational faculty chosen by several of these large filler companies. Giving Our Kids A Different Kind of Education

Giving Our Kids A Different Kind of Education

To help new students combine an introduction to wealth education with the first term in traditional education, The Money Gym is co-hosting a lively, interactive Internet Training event in Central London on 20th & 21st September 2008.

Woodford Green, Essex (PRWEB) August 8, 2008

To help new students combine an introduction to wealth education with the first term in traditional education, The Money Gym is co-hosting a lively, interactive Internet Training event in Central London on 20th & 21st September 2008.

With thousands of young people currently gearing up for their first year at University, parents around the country are scratching their heads and wondering where exactly are they going to be finding the money to support their offspring. And pondering at what point are they going to be able say "You're on your own now."

Indeed, GMTV are currently following two families through the current supposed credit crunch and one of them is a middle aged couple, with two teenagers, one of whom wants to go to college but who is scared to run up student loans and incur debt for living expenses. What a sad and fearful start for what could be a fantastic life.

Wealth coaching company www. themoneygym. com believes the problem starts with the education system itself. In the UK, our entire school system is designed to create an army of people whose sole thought on how to get on, in life, is to get a good job. The only problem with having a good job is that your salary is static, and very vulnerable to market forces. So if your expenses go up, or worse, you lose your job for any reason, you have lost your sole source of income.

However, if you learn how to make money, before you leave college or University, then you've learned a skill that will set you up for life, and help reduce student debts to a much more manageable level. It could even pay your way through college if you put the effort in.

Money Gym founder and wealth coach Nicola Cairncross suggests such activities as:
Building a part time business around a hobby or interest. One Money Gym client bought boxes of 100 shuttlecocks and packaged them up in smaller batches of 10 or 20 and sold them to students via the local badminton clubs.

Starting a part time business providing services that are always in demand, such as cleaning, babysitting or dog walking. The student doesn't even have to do the work, just organise teams of other part-timers to do the work, while they handle the organisation and promotion (such as organising for leaflets to be delivered).

Starting a part time business can legitimately cover some day to day expenses such as a mobile phone bill - and we all know how quickly they can add up for a student.

Students are in a great position to start a business online - James Murray Wells found out that he needed glasses in his final years of University and it gave him the idea of starting Glasses Direct. In 2005 Growing Business magazine cited Glasses Direct as having a turnover of £1m plus and James has since won the 2005 Shell Livewire award for entrepreneurship, the 2005 Startup Award, the 2005 Wales and West Country Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

The first step is acknowledging that wealth education is just as, if not more, important than traditional education. If you invest £500 into learning a new skill that could help you make an extra couple of hundred pounds a month (£2400 a year extra), then your return on investment in the first year would be 480% - a much better return than leaving it in a savings account at 6% interest. In the second year, your return would be much higher because you have made your initial investment back in the first year.

In this day and age there is no reason why anyone needs to be poor or rely on just one income stream. A proper wealth education will provides not only money for the here and now but also acts as an insurance policy against credit crunches, hikes in interest rates, and spiralling costs of living.

One of the speakers at the London event will be well known Australian copywriter & entrepreneur Brett McFall, author of "How To Make Money While You Sleep" (publisher: Wiley ISBN-10: 0731407296).

Entry will be effectively free, with participants asked to donate £25 per person to a UK based charity, rather than paying high ticket prices. Perfect for students on a tight budget or parents on an even tighter one!

Note to Editors:

The Money Gym has helped hundreds of people along the road to financial independence (and created some millionaires along the way). It is a powerful programme that teaches participants a solid and proven way of creating wealth, with a choice of ways to suit your personality. These could be a choice of, or a combination of high risk, high return investment, solid bricks and mortar, or building a business that you can sell or use to set you up for life.

Re-Launch of Compelling Young Poet and Author's Work Compels Others To Make Changes In Their Lives and In The Lives of Others

Re-Launch of Compelling Young Poet and Author's Work Compels Others To Make Changes In Their Lives and In The Lives of Others

"The Healing Conscious" is a stirring collection of poems depicting the last words of a dying man, commencing with his imminent death and spiritual rebirth in America, transgressing to this birth and conception in Ethiopia. The narrator recounts memorable moments during his life and those of his immediate family during this period in a brief moment of conscious reflection. A colorful portrait is painted of a young Ethiopian boy who traveled across the world, raised a family and became a successful man.

McLean VA (PRWEB) June 8, 2009

Kifle Bantayehu, a first-generation Ethiopian immigrant and Graduate Student, is breaking new ground with the re-launch of his work of literature - The Healing Conscious - combining the English language with Ethiopian culture. Moved by the AIDS epidemic, the author has, to date, donated twenty percent of the net proceeds to various organizations working to promote HIV/AIDS awareness and help those affected in Africa's developing nations, particularly children orphaned by this devastating epidemic. The Healing Conscious tells the story of an Ethiopian immigrant boy on his fascinating journey to America and adulthood.

The author - Kifle Bantayehu - recounts this poignant tale in poetic format. His inspirational collection of poems reflects the final words and thoughts of a dying man who traveled across the world, raised a family and became successful - finally fulfilling the American dream. These poems, written in a uniquely modern style, reflect a journey of sacrifice, courage and strength. There have been very few works of poetry written and published by Ethiopian authors.

"I wanted to tell a compelling story - which is based on the lives of my parents - of an immigrant who through much pain and sacrifice was able to leave his homeland of Ethiopia, with an equally-strong and motivated woman, and raise four children in the best possible environment for education, opportunity and happiness," says Bantayehu. He goes on to explain his motivation, "There are many wonderfully unique stories and novels depicting the lives of immigrants in America; but little said or depicted of the contributions and stories of the Ethiopian immigrant community residing in the United States. Not only do we, as Ethiopians, possess over 2,000 years of a rich, cultural heritage, but we are loving, caring and hard working people from whom the values of family, sacrifice, respect and camaraderie can be learned."

Born in the United States in 1980, Bantayehu grew up in Mexico, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia and the United States. In 2002 he received his B. A. degree from the University of Virginia, and currently resides in Virginia. His poems are featured in several anthologies/collections.

Institute of HeartMath®’s Military Service Appreciation Fund Gives Soldiers Peace of Mind

Institute of HeartMath®’s Military Service Appreciation Fund Gives Soldiers Peace of Mind

Over the last three years the Institute of HeartMath (IHM) has maintained the Military Service Appreciation Fund, which offers support to military personnel by providing scholarships for HeartMath training programs and their emWave® technology. IHM is working hard to assist military personnel with practical tools to help shorten the reintegration process - benefitting not only service members, but their families as well. HeartMath programs and services are being applied in a variety of contexts, including for PTSD and pain management, family communication and other challenges they face during reintegration.

Boulder Creek, CA (PRWEB) May 19, 2010

While U. S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan fight with the best weapons and training available, they are ill-equipped for combating the serious and deadly effects of daily stress and psychological trauma. The Department of Defense has made some headway to help soldiers before they deploy and when they return home, and various civilian organizations are providing assistance. The Institute of HeartMath® (IHM) is among them. For nearly 20 years, the nonprofit research and education organization has been recognized worldwide for its research on stress, emotions, optimal performance and resilience. IHM has developed programs and technologies that incorporate this research to improve people’s lives. Over the last three years IHM has maintained the Military Service Appreciation Fund (http://www. heartmath. org/about-us/heartmath-military-service-appreciation-fund. html), which offers support to military personnel by providing scholarships for HeartMath training programs and it emWave® technology.

One of the great tragedies of warfare is the mental and emotional toll that continues far beyond the battlefield. IHM’s unique approach includes teaching soldiers self-regulation techniques and providing them with HeartMath’s emWave® heart-rhythm coherence feedback technology, which helps them sustain these self-regulation skills.

Nearly one in five troops are returning from Afghanistan and Iraq with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), according to the National Institute of Mental Health.

“Most military personnel return without serious psychological injury,” IHM Director of Research Dr. Rollin McCraty noted. “However, nearly all of them are challenged with reintegration issues. This often manifests as insomnia or other sleep disorders. They may be over reactive, and many lack the ability to relate to family members and friends about issues that can seem trivial to them, but are important to others. Whether the soldiers have been through extreme levels of psychological stress or struggle with the reintegration process, it ultimately impinges on the quality of life for them and their families.”

HeartMath officials say it can be especially challenging for National Guard members who return to their home communities to pick up their lives where they left off before deployment. In contrast, members of the Army and other branches of the service return to military bases, where they receive support and are among soldiers who had similar experiences.

IHM is working hard to assist military personnel with practical, easy-to-use tools that can help shorten the reintegration process. This benefits not only service members, but their families as well, and it means they can transition back into their local communities and society with greater success – and often more quickly. HeartMath programs and services are being applied in a variety of contexts, including for PTSD and pain management, family communication and other challenges they face during reintegration.

“The need is great,” McCraty added. “It is rewarding to know that IHM’s scholarship program is providing soldiers who need, but cannot afford these interventions.”

McCraty emphasized that IHM’s mission is about serving humanity by providing practical and scientifically based tools and interventions proven to prevent and reverse the negative effects of stress, regardless whether it is a soldier, at-risk student or police officer who has a need.

“The HeartMath System is designed to help preserve and increase the quality of life for all individuals,” he said.

The techniques and technologies IHM has developed over nearly two decades provide service members with science-based methods for reducing stress and building resilience. One example is IHM’s emWave (http://www. myemwave. org/) heart-rhythm coherence feedback technology, which uses visual and audio feedback of the user’s heart rhythms. For military personnel, these techniques and technologies can be applied to achieve balance and calm.

HeartMath’s researchers discovered that monitoring heart-rhythm patterns and practicing easy-to-learn self-regulation tools such as its Quick Coherence® Technique are highly beneficial, especially for reducing stress, fatigue and sleeplessness, increasing cognitive function and building resilience.

Coherence is an important physiological state, HeartMath researchers explain, that is achieved when the heart, brain and nervous system come into alignment and work together efficiently and harmoniously. Studies show that when your heart beats in a coherent pattern, your emotional and mental state is balanced, and your body, including the immune and hormonal systems, are positively influenced.
Jolene, the wife of Daniel, a Marine serving in Afghanistan – their last names are withheld because of privacy concerns – told IHM that her husband began using the hand-held emWave® Personal Stress Reliever and learned HeartMath techniques to help him manage stress before deployment. She said her husband now carries the emWave with him in the field.

“I told him, ‘I don’t care if you have to hide that,” she said. “You take that with you.’ Because of how much it worked for him. I felt like it was just as important as having his gun.”

Members of the Armed Forces routinely are deployed without the psychological preparation and tools that Daniel was fortunate enough to receive through the Military Service Appreciation Fund, which offers grants for the emWave technology to returning active-duty troops and their families. Statistics show a high percentage of these troops will struggle mentally and emotionally as they try to resume normal lives back home.

In a study to be published in a scientific journal this summer, Dorn VA Medical Center in South Carolina recorded marked improvements in the attention and memory of soldiers with PTSD who practiced HeartMath techniques. A number of independent studies utilizing HeartMath techniques and the emWave technology have been done or are ongoing.

IHM officials say HeartMath resilience training can be tailored to suit tactical training windows and includes programs for military leaders and Special Forces and the reintegration of service members returning home.

The troop reintegration and transition program is designed to speed readjustment, strengthen resiliency, reduce stress symptoms, help manage PTSD and depression and address redeployment readiness.

IHM’s Military Service Appreciation Fund is maintained through contributions from the institute’s members and supporters. For more information, visit the Military Service Appreciation Fund (http://www. heartmath. org/about-us/heartmath-military-service-appreciation-fund. html) and the institute’s Web site, www. heartmath. org/military (http://www. heartmath. org/military), or call (800) 711-6221.

Nourish Interactive Web Site Tackles Childhood Obesity and Wins Parents' Choice Award

Nourish Interactive Web Site Tackles Childhood Obesity and Wins Parents' Choice Award

NourishInteractive. com, a free, bilingual nutrition education website for kids and parents, has just won the 2009 Parents' Choice Award. The website was started by a nurse last year to combat childhood obesity through fun, positive nutrition education interactive games and tools.

San Mateo, CA (PRWEB) September 17, 2009

Nutrition Education website for kids and parents (http://www. NourishInteractive. com) has just won the 2009 Parents' Choice Award.

Nourish Interactive Inc., an interactive, bilingual, free nutrition education website won the Approved Award from Parents' Choice, the nation's oldest, nonprofit consumer guide to quality children's media, founded in 1978.

NourishInteractive. com was started with the mission to help families promote healthy eating and daily activity to children through fun, positive messaging. The website is completely free featuring nutrition education games for children and online nutritional tools for parents (http://www. nourishinteractive. com/parents_area/overview). The parents' site interfaces with the child's games and resources to show parents the key nutritional messages their child is learning, and how their activities and games are providing valuable information about nutrition, energy, and exercise in an engaging way. Last year, an educators' section (http://www. nourishinteractive. com/hco/overview) was created complete with nutrition lesson plans, printable worksheets, fun activities and send-home tips for parents. The classroom segment was designed to support elementary school's nutrition education programs. It is now the fastest growing visitor segment of the website.

There are many nutrition games for children (http://www. nourishinteractive. com/kids/gameroom. html) to learn and play. The main food pyramid game, a multi-leveled online game, Chef Solus and the Food Pyramid Adventure, allows players to explore secret passageways and mystical surroundings while being guided through challenges, storylines, clues, obstacles and puzzles. The nutrition game allows children to make their own food choices, ultimately aiming to create three balanced meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The game, based on the USDA Food Pyramid guidelines, offers parents and health educators an easy and free solution to introducing nutrition to young children who are just beginning to form their eating and exercise habits.

"It is an honor to receive a Parents Choice Award for our nutrition website. We are a team of dedicated health professionals just trying to make a difference in helping families eat healthier," stated Maggie LaBarbera RN MBA, founder and president.

A Parents' Choice Approved seal indicates a wholesome product that helps children enjoy developing physical, emotional, social or academic skills. The Parents Choice Organization stated that fewer than 20% of the products submitted to the Parents' Choice Awards program receive any level of commendation. Maggie LaBarbera added, "We believe that early education is the key to helping children establish healthy habits and fight childhood obesity through early prevention and positive reinforcement. Being recognized for our contribution is a very proud and rewarding moment!"

About Parents' Choice Foundation (http://www. parents-choice. org/product. cfm? product_id=26639&StepNum=1&award=aw):
Designed to help parents and caregivers of all achievements and backgrounds make informed decisions about which new products are right for their children, the Parents' Choice Awards is the nation's oldest nonprofit program created to recognize quality children's media. The Parents' Choice Awards program honors the best material for children: books, toys, music and storytelling, magazines, software, videogames, television and websites. The Parents' Choice Approved Seals are given on the basis of the production, entertainment and human values they exemplify.

Parents' Choice Foundation's panels of educators, scientists, performing artists, librarians, parents and, yes, kids themselves, identify the very best products for children of different ages and backgrounds, and of varied skill and interest levels.

About Nourish Interactive Inc (http://www. nourishinteractive. com/):
Nourish Interactive, Inc. is committed to educating both children and their parents about the importance of nutrition and exercise, with the belief that prevention is the best treatment. Film Caputures Computer Programming

The subject of computer programming doesn’t immediately appear to be the most interesting topic. However, a new documentary film, ‘Aardvark’d: 12 Weeks With Geeks’ takes on the design, development, and debugging of a new software product, and has fun along the way.

(PRWEB) December 12, 2005

The subject of computer programming doesn’t immediately appear to be the most interesting topic. However, a new documentary film, ‘Aardvark’d: 12 Weeks With Geeks’ takes on the design, development, and debugging of a new software product, and has fun along the way.

The film documents a software development internship like no other. Fog Creek Software brought 4 interns from across the country to their New York City Office to create a software product from scratch in 12 weeks. The resulting product – Fog Creek Copilot, allows computer aficionados to remotely aid friends and family members anywhere from the comfort of their home computer.

The resulting documentary film has not only captured the development of the Copilot product, but the journey of these young developers, as well as that of their sponsoring young upstart company. “I wanted to produce film that would not only be interesting to developers, but general audiences as well”, stated Lerone Wilson, the 23 year old director of the film. For this reason, the film forays into the humorous antics of the interns, as well as fellow Fog Creek Developers. Along the way, the film also checks in with software notables Paul Graham and Dan Bricklin.

“This film is highly educational in that it introduces the viewer to a culture and activity not often seen, however at the same time doesn’t take itself seriously at all” Wilson added. Perhaps this is evident by the scenes and discussions focused on such outlandish topics as robotic roaches, the physics of jumping from rooftop to rooftop, and dorm room interrogations, which make the film the fun ride it is. "What we really wanted is that the movie not turn out to be totally geeky, with a bunch of stand up conversations about lambda calculus," said Fog Creek CEO Joel Spolsky. "Lerone came in as an outsider to software development and was able to focus on the human beings, not just the software."

“Aardvark’d: 12 Weeks With Geeks” is now available for purchase on DVD at www. aardvarkdmovie. com. It is already an official selection of the 2006 New York Independent Film Festival, which will take place in Los Angeles in March, and New York City in May. A blog of the intern’s experience is available at projectaardvark. com.

Kindergartens Soon To Enjoy 'Polly The Collie' - Helen Doron Educational Group's Newest English Course For Children Aged 3 - 7 In Larger Groups

Even kindergartners know it's never too early to learn English for a better start in life through the new Polly the Collie English course; developed by the globally franchised Helen Doron Early English learning system.

LONDON, UK (PRWEB) June 5, 2008

Now available worldwide! Polly the Collie is an active, joyful English course that helps young children who are non-native English learners understand, speak and sing English through fun activities, music and song. (www. englishpolly. com)

Polly the Collie course materials are based on developmentally appropriate practices and a pedagogically sound curriculum designed to encourage all children in English language acquisition naturally, through music, fun activities and nurturing. 'Polly' also helps build social skills and self-esteem, which has been shown to provide children with a big boost to later learning.

The internationally franchised Helen Doron Educational Group developed the Polly the Collie program specifically to meet the needs for English learning in kindergartens and preschools around the world. CEO, and head of product development Helen Doron, discusses the importance of a course like Polly the Collie. "Children up to the age of 7, have the innate ability to pick up a second language easily and effectively through the specially developed methodology and learning materials in the Polly the Collie program. Our learning materials provide children with an ideal method of reinforcing English vocabulary by using newly acquired words within an everyday setting that is familiar to them. "

Polly the Collie teaches about 360 English words relevant to kindergarten age children, introduces 14 lively original songs and dance movements, and instills a love of English and a joy in learning that helps build self-confidence. Helen also explains that, "Polly songs and activities are enhanced with oral, kinesthetic and visual experiences, which ensure a whole-brain approach for better all-around learning. Children easily identify with the delightful characters that speak and sing to them on the CD including 'Polly the Collie', the little boy and girl 'Roy' and 'Pearl', and others."

The specially trained 'Polly' teachers engage children in exciting classroom games and carefully planned activities in English. In addition, children can also download free 'Polly' extras, for more creative and fun English learning at home. Helen continues "The most important thing is that children really have a good time with Polly the Collie songs, stories and activities; and that's a big part of what makes teaching English with 'Polly', such a success."

Anne Gordon, VP of Business Development at The Helen Doron Educational Group, explains why 'Polly' is needed. "It's a global phenomenon - parents, kindergarten teachers, and municipal education authorities alike are all aware of the importance of getting children conversant in English as early as possible for a better future." Anne is confident about the future of this unique product."Polly the Collie is an excellent opportunity for Kindergartens around the world. Veterinarians at MyPetCareTV. com Offer Tips to Keep Your Pets Trim and Healthy for 2009

Veterinarians at MyPetCareTV. com Offer Tips to Keep Your Pets Trim and Healthy for 2009

Humans aren't the only ones who need to make healthy New Year resolutions

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) January 14, 2009

Los Angeles, CA - January 14, 2009 -- It's that time of year when we dust off the treadmill and vow to eat better, lose weight and be healthier. But what about your pet? Pets too deserve a healthy and happy New Year. According to a 2007 study by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 43 percent of dogs - approximately 32 million - are overweight or obese and potentially face serious health problems. Approximately 50% of all adult cats over 7 years of age are obese.

Many pet-owners are unaware that their pet is unhealthy or, according to a recent survey, may be too embarrassed to address the problem with their veterinarian or fellow pet-owners. Vets may even hesitate to broach the sensitive subjects of weight and obesity. Nationally recognized veterinarian Dr. Bernadine Cruz, DVM, one of the resident veterinarian advisors on MyPetCareTV. com, has put together a list of questions pet owners need to ask:
What is obesity? How does this happen to my pet? What are the medical concerns? What can I do as a pet-owner? Is medical intervention available?

Pet obesity is defined as being 20 percent over ideal body weight. Improved medical care, indoor living and nutritious food have contributed to pets living longer, healthier lives. But a plethora of dining choices and treats, along with pet owners who desire to lavish edible love on their furry family members, have contributed to the expanding problem of dog and cat obesity. Other causes can range from genetics and breed, to over-feeding, lack of exercise, boredom, and old age. Obesity can decrease your pet's lifespan by 15 percent and decreases the quality of life your pet can live.

How can you determine if you have pudgy pet: with a simple Body Condition Scoring test. With your dog or cat standing, look down on them. You should see an indentation after the ribs. If it looks like a sausage, it's fat. Place your hand gently on your pet's ribcage. With slight pressure you should be able to feel its ribs. If you are pinching an inch, it's fat.

So, what can you do to get your pet back on track? Dr. Cruz has put together some simple steps that can help you develop a "New Year New Pet" regime:

"Dogs are really the easiest to get to slim down. They are much more willing to go for a walk and thankfully most don't know how to open cans or cupboards," says Cruz.

Step one - keep the animals out of the kitchen when you are cooking and away from the table when people are eating. It is the rare person who can resist slipping a tidbit to that poor, poor pitiful creature staring at you. It is also a good idea to separate multiple pets at meal times. It is not uncommon for the pet on the diet to finish its controlled portion only to push the other pet away from their food.

Step two - If a dog just has to have a treat because it was the good boy or girl and went potty or some equally talented act…give it a green bean, a baby carrot or piece of apple. If the pet says 'no way, where is the good stuff' well you are exonerated because you offered but the pet said no. You can also give a piece of its regular dry food as a treat.

"Cats can be more trying. You can't put a cat on a very strict diet or just try to tough it out for a day or two by offering food your cat doesn't like and expect it to change its mind. They can develop a fatal liver condition. Slow is always best for a cat."

Step one - Cats don't have to have food available 24/7. Controlled feedings of measured amounts is best. If you must leave food out for your cat, hide it in various spots in the house in small quantities, and then the cat has to search for it.

Step two - Cats can exercise. They just prefer not to. Find what floats your cat's boat. It may be chasing a laser light or doing acrobatics while playing with a string. Try to set up some regular "play dates" with your cat.

Helping "The Queen City" Reclaim Her Throne

Helping "The Queen City" Reclaim Her Throne

The City of Plainfield, known as the “Queen City”, has vast potential, despite what the media portrays. With her beautiful homes, diverse population and suburban/urban lifestyle living, surrounding cities have utilized her as a model in building their cities. However, she has her issues: soaring crime, rising unemployment and abandoned buildings and homes, the “Queen City” needs help in reclaiming her throne. I am committed and dedicated to making this happen!

Plainfield, NJ (PRWEB) March 12, 2006

The first interest meeting to form the founding board of the Urban Help Connection will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2006 from 6:30 p. m.-8:00p. m. in the Community Room of the Plainfield Health Center, Plainfield, New Jersey.

The Urban Help Connection’s goal is to become a non-profit organization, with the commitment of improving the quality of life in The City of Plainfield. With her beautiful historic homes, diverse population and suburban/urban lifestyle living, surrounding cities have utilized The City of Plainfield as a model in building their cities. However, there are pressing issues that needs to be addressed: soaring crime, rising unemployment, abandoned buildings and homes, all of these issues leaves the “Queen City” in need of help. Natasha Boone, Founder of The Urban Help Connection, lost her nephew on February 16, 2006 to gun violence in Plainfield and felt that enough is enough. “The City of Plainfield has vast potential, despite what the media portrays. Yes, we have our issues but with the collaboration of the local government, law enforcement and community members, we will reclaim our throne”, says Natasha.

The Urban Help Connection will focus on creating and implementing programs that help rebuild Plainfield’s image. Through improving the economy, education and public safety, Plainfield will become the city to emulate. The programs will target indigent citizens of Plainfield (single parents, underemployed, unemployed, ex-cons, Workfirst recipients and the youth). Why the commitment? “I have been a lifelong resident of Plainfield and know firsthand the beauty of this city. I could very well move to another city, but I have children, nieces, nephews; as well as; friends who have kids who are growing up here. Moving isn’t an option for me, it’s a cop-out!”

American Citizens Abroad Announces the Winners of the 2008 Thomas Jefferson Award

American Citizens Abroad Announces the Winners of the 2008 Thomas Jefferson Award

American Citizens Abroad announces that the winners this year of the ACA Thomas Jefferson Award are Maura Harty, former Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs, and Michael Parmly, Chief of Mission in Cuba. This distinction honors State Department employees who have given exemplary service to American citizens residing abroad. ACA serves US citizens living outside of the United States on subjects such as taxation, citizenship, voting, Medicare, Social Security, education and many more.

Geneva (PRWEB) March 13, 2008

American Citizens Abroad (ACA), a Geneva-based organization serving the interests of overseas Americans all over the world, announced today the winners of the 2008 Thomas Jefferson Award. This distinction honors State Department employees who have given exemplary service to American citizens residing abroad.

The 2008 winners are Maura Harty, former Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs, and Michael Parmly, Chief of Mission in Cuba.

Maura Harty was a member of the Foreign Service from 1981 to 2008. A graduate of the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, she served the State Department in many challenging positions, both in Washington and abroad - in Mexico, Grenada, Columbia, Spain, Lithuania. Her final overseas assignment was as U. S. Ambassador to Paraguay.

Maura became the Assistant Secretary of Consular Affairs on November 21, 2002, after having served as the Executive Secretary of the Department of State. She stepped down from her Consular Affairs position in February 2008.

Americans overseas are especially grateful to Maura Harty for her dedicated efforts on their behalf while Managing Director of the Directorate of Overseas Citizens Services, where she created the office of Children's Issues, and during her most recent position as the head of the U. S. Consular Service. Her aid in working to resolve a wide range of problems specific to individual Americans abroad and her willingness to meet and discuss with representatives of the American overseas community how to improve the relations between the overseas Americans and the U. S. Government are greatly appreciated.

Michael E. Parmly, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister-Counselor, is currently serving as Chief of Mission-Designate for the U. S. Interests Section in Havana, Cuba.

He earned a degree in International Relations and Latin American Studies at St. Joseph's College in Philadelphia and was a Peace Corps volunteer in Bucaramanga, Colombia, prior to receiving his Masters of Arts of Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.

Michael has been a Foreign Service Officer since 1977, working in Morocco, Spain, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, France and Afghanistan. He has also served on the faculty of the National War College as Professor of National Security Studies, specializing in post-conflict situations. From August to October, 2004, he served as Senior Advisor to Ambassador Khalilzad for the Afghan Presidential elections. In Washington he has served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, and later as Acting Assistant Secretary.

American Citizens Abroad salutes Michael Parmly's exemplary and dedicated service to his country, including aspects of his work which have impacted positively on local overseas American communities.

ACA takes great pride in giving this award to both Maura and Michael and wishes them much success in the future.

ACA is a non-partisan, non-profit association of US citizens living outside of the United States. Founded in Geneva, Switzerland in 1978, it now has members on six continents. ACA works to address and correct a wide range of anomalies and inequities in US laws and regulations that affect US citizens residing overseas. These include trying to eliminate unfair double taxation, improve the citizenship rights of children, strengthen voting rights, and bring about direct representation for the overseas American community in the U. S. Congress. ACA works to promote a positive image of the United States and of overseas U. S. citizens, and stresses the latter's important contributions to the prosperity, security and the reputation of America. ACA recently published a new anthology of stories about life in the private sector abroad entitled: "So Far Yet So Near".

ACA launched the Thomas Jefferson Award in 1993 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Jefferson, America's first Secretary of State and third President. Jefferson, who lived outside the new republic for a number of years, helped to secure its independence and promote its political, economic and national security interests. As he was in many ways the quintessential Overseas American, in the private sector and while serving his country, this is why the ACA award carries his name.

Previous winners of the Thomas Jefferson Award were serving in the Cameroon, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Israel, the Philippines, China, Vietnam, Uruguay, the Caribbean and Washington DC. Their strong and meritorious commitment, creativity and enthusiasm have greatly helped to inspire, promote and protect the interests of the 4 million strong overseas American community.

The MMTIC™: New Learning Style Assessment Helps Teachers Lead All Students to Academic Success

The MMTIC™: New Learning Style Assessment Helps Teachers Lead All Students to Academic Success

CAPT, Inc., a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the effective application of the science of personality, is pleased to announce the new release of the Murphy-Meisgeier Type Indicator for Children® assessment instrument. The MMTIC™ assessment is a short self-report questionnaire designed for children in grades 2 through 12. Results help teachers and counselors recognize the diverse learning styles that different children prefer. MMTIC support materials help teachers develop more diverse instructional methods to help all their students learn more effectively. Designed by renowned school psychologists, the MMTIC assessment measures the same dimensions of personality in children that the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® instrument, the world's most widely used personality instrument, assesses in adults.

Gainesville, FL (PRWEB) February 26, 2008

When learning is stimulating, children learn more, stay in school longer, and enjoy more success as adults. Sadly, research has shown that children's attitudes towards school become more negative as they progress from grade to grade.

Teachers with the tools to craft lessons that appeal to different learning styles provide greater opportunity for positive learning experiences. Providing such tools is the key--and the challenge. "Too often, educators continue to treat all learners alike while paying lip service to the principle of diversity," laments Pat Guild, coauthor of Marching to Different Drummers.

The newly released Murphy Meisgeier Type Indicator for Children®, or MMTIC™, assessment provides a reliable, valid, and easy-to-use method for measuring different learning styles in children. The MMTIC instrument is based on the well-established personality theory of psychological type, with over 60 years of research supporting improved academic performance and social relationships when used in education.

Created by internationally renowned school psychologists Elizabeth Murphy, Ph. D., and Charles Meisgeier, Ph. D., the MMTIC assessment has been in use since 1987. The 2008 release incorporates many significant advances and can be completed (online or on paper) in less than 15 minutes.

MMTIC reports are designed for both students (at three age levels) and adults involved in the student's development. Jane Kise, an education consultant who has authored books on differentiated instruction, highlights the benefits: "MMTIC assessments help both teachers and students. Teachers get a deeper understanding of crucial differences in how students learn. Students get insights into what kinds of learning and social interactions they are better at, plus strategies to improve areas that are challenging. Any of these alone will lead to more success in school."

Recommendations and insights from the reports are complemented by extensive support materials (many of them provided at no cost) that help students, teachers, and parents alike promote healthy personality growth and maximum learning for every child.

The MMTIC assessment is available in its new easy-to-use web-based delivery system from its publisher, the Center for Applications of Psychological Type. CAPT® is a not-for-profit educational, training, and assessment organization cofounded by Isabel Briggs Myers in 1975.

For additional information, sample reports, or a setup demonstration, visit www. capt. org/assessment-mmtic/ (http://www. capt. org/assessment-mmtic/), or call 1-800-777-2278.

Herndon, VA (Vocus) May 8, 2008

BridgeStreet Worldwide, a leading international provider of corporate housing, announced today the 2007 winner of its BridgeCare Award. This annual recognition is awarded to an associate who best reflects the company's commitment to exceed guests' comfort and service expectations. The annual BridgeCare winner is selected from four semi-finalists, known as "BridgeStars," who each received prizes and company-wide recognition.

This year's Grand Prize winner, Melanie Buechler was surprised by the "Prize Patrol" led by BridgeStreet president and CEO, Lee Curtis, who presented her with the award and prizes, including a paid vacation for two. Buechler was up against some stiff competition from the other finalists who touched the lives of guests through compassionate gestures and made guests feel cared for with heartfelt efforts.

"The BridgeCare program encourages our associates to nurture relationships and seek new and creative opportunities to make guests' experience with BridgeStreet memorable," said Curtis. "This means going beyond typical customer expectations and allows us to connect with our clients in unique and personal ways. I am proud of the passion and dedication for service excellence shown by our associates' everyday and the way that our Associates live the core values that our company has been built upon. It is through the BridgeStar recognition program we honor their successes and our company's top performers."

This year's annual winner exhibited the spirit of BridgeCare by finding a way to personally and positively affect the lives of guests. Buechler realized that a high percentage of guests in her New York market were expatriate spouses who had moved to the United States from their own country and often felt overwhelmed by the cultural differences. Buechler was determined to improve the transition process and to make the relocation experience and their time in New York a positive one. She partnered with relocation professionals to create a networking community called "What About Me?" which provides guests with a platform to share thoughts and ideas in a social and educational setting.
