SilverChicks Supports the Ethiopian Books for Children and Educational Foundation

SilverChicks Supports the Ethiopian Books for Children and Educational Foundation

SilverChicks. com has added helping EBCEF (Ethiopian Books for Children and Educational Foundation) to their list of worthy projects.

(PRWEB) June 11, 2005

SilverChicks. com, a small web-based bead and jewelry business that specializes in beads from the African trade and handmade, ceramic Kazuri beads from Kenya has started working with an American based non-profit organization which operates the only children's library in Ethiopia. The owners of SilverChicks. com have a strong love and deep interest in the Horn of Africa.

This organization, EBCEF, the Ethiopian Books for Children and Educational Foundation was founded with the purpose of increasing the literacy rate of children in Ethiopia and to create excitement about reading and encourage the pursuit knowledge.

Yohannes Gebregeorgis, a native of Ethiopia, learned to read in his village school in high school classes taught by Peace Corps volunteers. He fondly remembers the first book he held in his hands outside of school, at the age of nineteen. Yohannes later came to the United States as a political refugee, where he earned a masterÂ’s degree in library science and became a childrenÂ’s librarian at the San Francisco Public Library. One of his duties as the childrenÂ’s librarian was to purchase books in various languages to further develop the resources of the library. He was surprised to discover that, despite a large Ethiopian population in the San Francisco Bay area, he was unable to find books printed in any of the Ethiopian languages.

Recognizing the importance of reading for children in his native country, he organized a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, the Ethiopian Books for Children and Education Foundation (EBCEF) in 1998.

As Yohannes worked to develop his project, he contacted American author Jane Kurtz who has written books for children set in Ethiopia. Jane had grown up in Ethiopia, where her parents worked as missionaries. Near that time, Jane had been asked to help explore global missions at First Presbyterian Church in Grand Forks ND. Yohannes and EBCEF quickly came to mind and knowing first hand the power of books to open minds and to change lives, members of the First Presbyterian church enthusiastically joined Jane, her family and the librarian in accomplishing the dream of books in the hands of Ethiopian children.

Jane Kurtz is now EBCEFÂ’s board of directors and has led this grass-root non-profit through its first step: publishing a picture book for Ethiopian children in 2002. The book "Silly Mammo" is the first bilingual book ever published, written in both English and Amharic. It is one of the few books at all published in an Ethiopian language. The text was done by Yohannes Gebregeorgis and the book design and editing were donated. "Silly Mammo" is used as a fundraiser for EBCEF.

Yohannes Gebregeorgis once again resides in Ethiopia where he is playing a very active role in changing the future of his homeland. April 7, 2003, was opening day for the Ethiopian ChildrenÂ’s Book Center, the first free library for children in Addis Ababa, a city of more than three million people. Established in a poor neighborhood with no safe spaces for play, reading or art activity, the center consists of two tented reading areas and three indoor reading rooms available free of charge to children eighteen and under.

The library has seating for up to 126 children and houses approximately 15,000 books on a variety of different subjects and reading levels, some in Ethiopian languages. Currently nine staff members keep the center open and running. The center is alive with storytelling and reading programs, arts and crafts days, movies and a theater program in addition to children quietly reading.

The library originally opened in the basement of Yohannes' house then expanded to fill the whole building with additional tents set up in the yard to make space for all the children who come. Over 40,000 visits have been made to the library since its opening in April of 2003.

Children from all over the neighborhood come to use the facilities to study, do their homework or escape with a good book. This is the first free library service for children in Addis Ababa and, according the principal of the neighborhood school, an indispensable resource. It is hoped that the reading center will serve as a model for Ethiopia and other African countries.

A $20,000 grant from the Presbyterian WomenÂ’s Thank Offering provided much of the first yearÂ’s operating expenses. Now in the second year, the libraryÂ’s operation relies on income from book sales, church partners and donations. It costs $83.00 USD each day to keep this library open, and there are many more plans and dreams for the potential for EBCEF.

Catie Dupont and Valissa McGuffee, owners of SilverChicks. com, happily offered their website as a virtual shopping cart to help raise funds for EBCEF to help keep the dream alive. Catie had the privilege of living in Ethiopia and seeing firsthand the impact that EBCEF is making in teaching a new generation to feel true hope through literacy.

SilverChicks. com has established a cash donation option on their website. Additionally, they are selling three books that have been donated to EBCEF on the site. “Silly Mammo”, “Only a Pigeon” by Jane and Christopher Kurtz, and “Saba: Under the Hyena’s Foot”, written by Jane Kurtz for the American Girl, Girls of Many Lands Program, is available for purchase. All monies received from the sales of these books go directly to EBCEF and its current and future projects.

Should you have further questions, please visit the EBCEF website at www. ethiopiareads. org. To purchase books in support of EBCEF, please visit www. silverchicks. com. For more information on author Jane Kurtz, visit www. janekurtz. com.

Veritas Party Forum new announcements general Issues General Election News and Veritas Candidate News British Politics news, rumours & discussion from Westminiser to Holyrod

(PRWEB) February 27, 2005

The real Veritas Party Forum The straight talking party that tells the truth & only the truth. Robert Kilroy Silk, Veritas Party. Forum for Members by members. veritaspartyforum With the real Veritas forum going online and National Veritas web site already live will see the people in contact with their party and membership.

In the 21st Century a voter, is near a computer screen near you. The age of the computer has come to politics with web sites and forums atracting new members and hits. This must put the priority of all political parties to start their own forums. Keeping pace with the membership and making sure they are informed. It brings their leaders & party members to the forum meeting place. Creating discussions on News and what is happening within the party on a local regional and Nationwide scale. It brings all walks of life together. Many who have joined Veritas have had no political history with any political party. With one click you could be talking Law & Order with Veritas Crime spokesman Patrick Eston or a Health with Dr. Jonathon Lockhart or Sport with winston Mckenzie, or Tax with Damian Hockney, or Drugs with Alan Eastwood, or Energy with Martin Cole, or E-Government with Ken Evans, or Constitutional Affairs with Michael Harvey, or Small Business with Peter Hulme-Cross, or Civil Liberties with Judith Longman, or Education with Daniel Moss, or Defence with Ashley Merry, or Asylum & Immigration with Veritas Leader Robert Kilroy Silk. Democracy at its best, Internet style. One of the biggest watchers of these forums & net bloggers is the media itself. Hungry for new, feeding from the frenzy that news story's can become. With computer users logging on to popular sites such as Holiday Truths. Consummer programs like the BBC Watchdog program regularly patrolling the Web & its forums looking for agreived consumers for program input.

A story that started on the web will often end up in the news. There is a case to say that David may know be mightier than " Goliath" or is it that the " Pen will alway's be mightier than the Sword." Many older style Generals do not seem to grasp the power of the Web, hardly touching their key boards. The Web and its forums used in a true Honest fashion is a tool, that all politcal party'will use and harness. The peole speek and politions have to listen. Sadly Tony Blairs New Labour seems to have lost their way. In the recent elections in the USA political forums saw massive hits to their forums. Both mainstream political party's have large increases of membership due to their own forums. As in the numbers watching popular TV rise so will the memberships of our Political Party's. Not least the " Veritas Party" and the message it is spreading throughout the United Kingdom. Robert Kilroy Silks, walkabouts are attracting massive attention & support, from supporters and voters. In a recent walkabout in Port Talbot, South Wales RKS was mobbed by Supporters. More Walkabouts are planned with the people eager to shake Robert Kilroy Silk hand. He is a great breat of fresh air in todays politics. Many will say that the BBC loss is indeed Veritas is gain. We are seeing a major change in the battle fields of the election.

Even the media takes note of web sites trawling, web pages and sites looking for a newsworthy story. These days a blooger as these new Internet Gurus are called can even make storys. Information is traded at the click of a mouse.

A state-of-the-art, 450-bed health care facility, delivering level-one trauma and graduate medical education, BAMC requires the most advanced communications technologies available. The VESTA solution, often selected by progressive military call centers, provides BAMC dispatchers full, touch-screen control of both wireline and wireless calls. ALI information, which supplies BAMC with the location of callers in need, comes from PlantCML’s comprehensive PEAbody (http://www. plantcml-eads. com/solutions-products/federal/federal-data-management-analytics/peabody)™ALI database solution.

In addition, this resilient network-based application underwent rigorous testing to achieve Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC) certification. Leading Education Organizations Announce Consortium for Transforming Low-Performing Schools From Within

Leading Education Organizations Announce Consortium for Transforming Low-Performing Schools From Within

Renaissance Learning and JBHM Education Group Introduce Program That Builds School and District Capacity to Accelerate Learning, Provides Alternative to Charters and Closures

Jackson, MS (PRWEB) November 4, 2009

Amid growing pressure on public school districts to improve performance of chronically struggling schools, two nationally recognized education organizations have formed a consortium to offer a research-based approach for transforming these schools into successful learning environments without requiring mass dismissals of staff, school closures or turnover to charters or outside management organizations. The new initiative, called SetPoint (http://www. setpointschools. com), pairs classroom technology with intensive coaching to build capacity for sustained change within the local district.

Renaissance Learning, the world's leading provider of computer-based assessment technology for pre-K-12 schools, and JBHM Education Group, a team of noted specialists in changing low-performing schools, formed this new initiative based on decades of experience in thousands of schools around the country, and a belief that turning around chronically low-performing schools requires systemic change that touches all systems and personnel involved in the process, from classroom teachers to board members.

"We believe in public schools and the people who have dedicated their careers to teaching children," said Terrance D. Paul, CEO, Renaissance Learning. "Working with schools around the country, we have seen this transformational model for school improvement succeed when there is buy-in from all stakeholders, when school teams are coached in educational best practices and when students have access to premier learning tools. SetPoint gives our two organizations the opportunity to work together to implement this proven model for school improvement and make real, sustainable change."

The two organizations come to the consortium with differing but complementary backgrounds and skills. Since 1986, Renaissance Learning has produced software for classroom assessment and data-driven decision-making. Products include Accelerated Reader, the most widely used software in K-12 schools, as well as the first nationally normed computer-adaptive reading comprehension test, STAR Reading, introduced in 1995 and today part of a suite of advanced assessments that federal agencies have given top ratings for screening, progress monitoring and mastery measurement. JBHM was founded a decade ago by a former superintendent to help schools struggling to meet No Child Left Behind requirements, and has built a team of experienced superintendents, principals and other top educators who have helped scores of failing schools by working day to day with educators - monitoring, modeling and mentoring. For several years, JBHM and Renaissance Learning have often found themselves working with the same schools and, in the process, discovered they share many educational principles, as well as a profound belief in the value of public schools.

"There's a good deal of evidence that school closures and mass dismissals of staff are detrimental to kids. At the same time, transformation is not a cake walk, and isn't business as usual," said Mike Walters, founder of JBHM and a former school superintendent. "To make big changes in results, you have to make big changes in procedures. That means helping everyone - from classroom teachers to school board members - to do their jobs more effectively and efficiently. That is the SetPoint approach to transforming schools."

SetPoint meets or exceeds criteria for federal funding under the "transformational" model for school change described in two programs of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA): the "Race to the Top" initiative and the newly expanded School Improvement Grant (SIG) program. SIG funding is aimed at the bottom five percent of U. S. schools, the group the SetPoint program of intensive intervention targets most directly. Together, the two programs will provide about $8 billion for school improvement. Both require that districts choose among four change models for low-performing schools: closing the school, turning it over to a charter or outside "educational management organization," a "turnaround" process requiring the dismissal of at least half the faculty, or the transformation model.

The SetPoint Process: Changing Schools From Within:
With the SetPoint process, most staff members remain in their positions and receive intensive coaching and modeling in best instructional practices from experienced principals and school leaders. Mentors are in the school daily to provide teachers, staff and administrators with the support they need to adhere to an approach called the "Five Essential Practices." This model for improving schools was developed by JBHM over decades in close consultation with experts on effective instruction and is highly regarded by leaders in school change, such as Larry Lezotte, Ph. D., of Effective Schools.

The "Five Essential Practices" are designed to turn a dysfunctional school into a thriving learning community. 1) The school must use a research-based curriculum, aligned with district, state and national standards and taught with fidelity to all students. 2) The school environment and culture must be safe, secure and orderly so that learning can happen. 3) Both the amount and quality of instructional time must be increased for all students, particularly in reading, math and writing, including substantial time for guided practice of acquired skills. 4) Student achievement must be monitored constantly and consistently, using technology to both assess and analyze the data. 5) School policies and procedures must support the ongoing implementation of educational best practices - not just on professional development days, but every day of the school year.

Meanwhile, students have access to the most highly rated and advanced instructional technology for both learning and assessment on their own wireless-network laptops. Educators rely on a steady stream of assessment data to personalize instruction for every student, providing more intensive intervention for struggling students as called for in the evidence-based Response to Intervention (RtI) model.

The SetPoint model is already working in schools around the country. Just one example is Gibbs Elementary in Franklin, La. In 2006, this rural school, with 75 percent of its students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, was under academic warning and slipped into the "choice" category, which gave parents the option to send their children elsewhere. Gibbs' School Performance Score (SPS) was only 54.9 when a JBHM specialist started working with its team. In just one year, the school's SPS increased nearly 26 points, the largest single-year gain in the state. Comparable gains occurred in the second year.

For more information about SetPoint, go to www. setpointschools. com or call 866-505-2459.

About JBHM Education Group, LLC
Established in 2000 by a veteran school superintendent, JBHM began by helping districts struggling with the mandates of No Child Left Behind and quickly discovered that intensive hands-on assistance was required to help schools meet their achievement goals. They therefore developed detailed processes for monitoring and advancing the skills of school and district leaders and teachers. JBHM's growing corps of specialists - all highly experienced superintendents, principals, teachers and specialists and highly trained and mentored in the JBHM process of improvement and coaching - provide services in school improvement, teacher coaching, special education and working with struggling learners. JBHM has worked with hundreds of schools in increasing academic rigor and instructional focus, demonstrating that sustainable achievement gains are possible once excuses for weak performance are left at the schoolhouse door.

Phoenix Real Estate Company Winfield Lee Investments & Development Sponsors "Racing for Children" Charity Drive

Real estate development company Winfield Lee Investments & Development of Scottsdale, Arizona, recently joined with American race car driver Peter Olson to sponsor his 'racing for children' efforts for the Christian Children's Fund in a Formula RT/2000 race on July 16th at Lime Rock Raceway in Connecticut.

Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) July 28, 2005

Real estate development company Winfield Lee Investments & Development of Scottsdale, Arizona recently joined with American race car driver Peter Olson to sponsor his 'racing for children' efforts for the Christian Children's Fund ("CCF") in an exciting Formula RT/2000 race on July 16th at the famous Lime Rock Raceway in Northwest Connecticut.

Olson excelled in the race despite being injured in a massive practice crash just 48 hours before. Starting the race in 8th as a result of the crash and falling to 9th during a chaotic race start, Olson picked up five positions to finish 4th in the 35 minute race.

The Formula 2000 race weekend is part of the exciting Skip Barber Eastern Regional Championship race series.

"No guts, no glory, that's what auto racing is all about" said Olson. "I'd really like to thank the Winfield Lee Investments for making this race and my chase for the Lime Rock lap record possible. Winfield LeeÂ’s support for my 'racing for children' efforts is helping me to continue to generate valuable publicity for CCF through the unique venue of professional auto racing. I definitely expect a win next time around," said a confident Olson.

Olson is the only American driver currently competing in the prestigious 175mph China Formula Renault race series, which is watched by more than 100 million live television viewers in mainland China. The sponsor of two needy children, Olson has used auto racing to promote CCF for the past several years in his auto racing endeavors in the United States and Asia.

About the Christian ChildrenÂ’s Fund:

CCF International, one of the largest and most well-respected charities in the world, is an international organization whose members provide assistance to more than 8 million impoverished children and families in more than 54 countries. The more intensive the rehab, the less likely a relapse. Twelve-Step Programs like those at Ambrosia Treatment Center achieve even greater results when pared with in-patient housing. The Relapse Prevention system is most effective in treating alcoholism and at least as effective as other methods in treating drug addiction, eating disorders and compulsive gambling.

Ambrosia Treatment Center is proud to announce their most intensive in-patient program which typifies relapse prevention measures and delivers high success rates and low relapse rates. Ambrosia Treatment Center now employs several innovative processes directed at treating addiction and preventing relapse from the very first day of admission, including non-verbal therapies such as recreation therapy, art therapy, music therapy, or dance (movement) therapy to provide the client with alternative means of self-expression and problem resolution; Employment or educational support services to assist clients in becoming financially independent; and life skills training such as anger management, communication skills, employability skills, problem solving, recovery training, decision-making, relationship skills, and symptom management.

The professionals at Ambrosia have spent years perfecting the drug rehab experience, always with the end goal of preventing relapse in mind. They are one of the most respected centers in the Port St. Lucie and central Florida areas. For additional information on the AMBROSIA TREATMENT CENTER and drug abuse treatment please call 1-866-616-0069 or visit www. ambrosiatreatmentcenter. com.

1craftsearch. com is optimized for latest, standards-compliant browsers

California has long been recognized for its rich cultural heritage but many of CaliforniaÂ’s talented craft artists are relatively unknown. Developing presentation skills, learning marketing techniques and building strong business skills will set the foundation for these craft artists to promote their work on a local and a national level.

(PRWEB) August 28, 2004

According to Jon Prano, CEO of 1craftsearch. com web site, "The timing of this search engine couldn't be better. This search engine offers programs designed to foster the creative and professional development of craft artists. In recent years we have noticed a growing interest within the craft community for educational programs focusing on the 'business of art'."

Through this search engine youÂ’ll discover information, to meet their interests and needs. "Your Craft, Your Business" search engine draws upon the resources of both sponsoring organizations.

Jon Prano says this search engine will help "Marketing for the Creative Small Business person."

"Our site is optimized for the latest, standards-compliant browsers. We try to avoid non-valid markup as much as possible. Our site is somewhere in between going all-out by relying on CSS only for representation, and using lots of heavy handed backwards-compatible workarounds. There's not a font tag to be seen in our markup, nor a JavaScript error message." noted Prano.

"A significant portion of our web site readers are not that experienced in web development. We felt that this was a good opportunity to educate our readers about this issue, as well as show them a living example of how it can be possible to build a site that "works" without bending over backwards to deal with browser bugs" Prano said.

1craftsearch. com offers the arts and craft industry, online marketers and entrepreneurs an unprecedented opportunity to reach a high-quality, receptive audience in this unique and profitable niche.

Media Alert -- Announcement of the 2007 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate

Media Alert -- Announcement of the 2007 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate

The 2007 Pritzker Laureate announcement will be made for publication on Thursday, March 29.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) March 26, 2007

The 2007 Pritzker Laureate announcement will be made for publication on Thursday, March 29.

The complete media kit will be posted on the PritzkerPrize. com web site on Wednesday, March 28 at 12 noon Pacific Daylight Time embargoed for publication on or after Thursday, March 29. The media kit consists of two PDF booklets: one for text and one for images. The latter contains images that are linked to high resolution images that may be downloaded for printing.

The Pritzker Architecture Prize was established by The Hyatt Foundation in 1979 to honor annually a living architect whose built work demonstrates a combination of those qualities of talent, vision, and commitment, which has produced consistent and significant contributions to humanity and the built environment through the art of architecture. It has often been described as "architecture's most prestigious award" or as "the Nobel of architecture."

The prize takes its name from the Pritzker family, whose international business interests are headquartered in Chicago. They have long been known for their support of educational, social welfare, scientific, medical and cultural activities. Jay A. Pritzker, who founded the prize with his wife, Cindy, died on January 23, 1999. His eldest son, Thomas J. Pritzker has become president of The Hyatt Foundation.

Many of the procedures and rewards of the Pritzker Prize are modeled after the Nobel Prize. Laureates of the Pritzker Architecture Prize receive a $100,000 grant, a formal citation certificate, and since 1987, a bronze medallion. Prior to that year, a limited edition Henry Moore sculpture was presented to each Laureate.

Nominations are accepted from all nations; from government officials, writers, critics, academicians, fellow architects, architectural societies, or industrialists, virtually anyone who might have an interest in advancing great architecture. The prize is awarded irrespective of nationality, race, creed, or ideology.

The nominating procedure is continuous from year to year, closing in November each year. Nominations received after the closing are automatically considered in the following calendar year. There are well over 500 nominees from more than 47 countries to date. The final selection is made by an international jury with all deliberation and voting in secret.

The presentation ceremonies move around the world each year, paying homage to the architecture of other eras and/or works by previous laureates of the prize. As the ceremony locations are usually chosen each year before the laureate is selected, there is no intended connection between the two.

On June 4, 2007 in London, The Banqueting House, the only building that survived the disastrous Whitehall Palace fire in 1698, will be the venue for the ceremony awarding this year's Pritzker Architecture Prize. The building with its ceiling murals by Peter Paul Rubens, was designed by Inigo Jones in 1619, and has been used over the centuries for many royal functions.

"Jones is credited with being the first Englishman to properly understand the rules of Classical and Renaissance architecture, primarily as defined by Vitruvius and Palladio respectively," explained Thomas J. Pritzker, president of The Hyatt Foundation. "So it is totally in keeping with our tradition of holding the ceremonies in locations that honor the history of architecture."

The international prize, often referred to as "the profession's highest honor," has been given in nine different countries in Europe, once in Jerusalem and just last year in Istanbul. Japan and Mexico have also hosted the ceremony. It has been held fifteen times in the United States.

One of the founding jurors of the Pritzker Prize, the late Lord Clark of Saltwood, also known as art historian Kenneth Clark, and perhaps best known for his television series and book, Civilisation, said at one of the ceremonies, "A great historical episode can exist in our imagination almost entirely in the form of architecture. Very few of us have read the texts of early Egyptian literature. Yet we feel we know those infinitely remote people almost as well as our immediate ancestors, chiefly because of their sculpture and architecture."

Study Shows Home Birth Lowers Cesarean Risk

Study Shows Home Birth Lowers Cesarean Risk

“Based on these study results, women who want to avoid a cesarean should consider planning a home birth with a Certified Professional Midwife,” said Tonya Jamois, president of the International Cesarean Awareness Network (ICAN). “Double digit cesarean rates subject women and babies to the risks of preventable surgery and drive up the cost of health care for everyone.”

(PRWEB) June 21, 2005

A landmark study published June 18 in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) shows planned home births with Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) result in significantly lower cesarean rates than planned hospital births.

The 2000 study by a Canadian epidemiologist and a CPM tracked more than 5,000 pregnant women in the United States and Canada planning home birth. The result was a 3.7 percent cesarean rate among all mothers and a 1.7 percent cesarean rate among women who previously gave birth vaginally.

The Centers for Disease Control documented a 23 percent cesarean rate for the U. S. in 2000, the same year in which the study was conducted. The most recent figures available show the U. S. with a 27.6 percent cesarean rate in 2003 and Canada with a 24 percent rate in 2002.

“We hope the positive results of this home birth study will move the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) to review their protocols and guidelines to support women who choose home birth and to integrate Certified Professional Midwives into the healthcare system,” Jamois said. Currently, ACOG opposes home birth.

The largest study of its kind to date found “planned home births for low-risk women in the United States are associated with similar safety and less medical intervention as low-risk hospital births.” http://bmj. bmjjournals. com/cgi/content/abridged/330/7505/1416 (http://bmj. bmjjournals. com/cgi/content/abridged/330/7505/1416)

ICAN recognizes that when a cesarean is necessary it can be a lifesaving technique for both mother and baby and worth the risks involved. However, a cesarean is major surgery and should be used only when necessary because it does introduce risks. Potential risks to babies include: low birth weight; prematurity; respiratory problems; and lacerations. Potential risks to mothers include: hemorrhage; infection; hysterectomy; surgical mistakes; re-hospitalization; dangerous placental abnormalities in future pregnancies; unexplained stillbirth in future pregnancies and increased percentage of maternal death.

ICAN is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve maternal-child health by preventing unnecessary cesareans through education, providing support for cesarean recovery and promoting vaginal birth after cesarean. There are more than 60 ICAN Chapters in the U. S. and Canada, which hold education and support meetings for people interested in cesarean prevention and recovery. For more information, visit www. ican-online. org or call ICAN President Tonya Jamois at (760) 744-5260 or the ICAN office at (800) 686-ICAN.

Media Note

Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) are direct-entry midwives (DEMs) who earned certification from the North American Registry of Midwives (www. narm. org) and who practice primarily in out-of-hospital settings.

Some states, such as South Carolina, that have regulatory laws governing home birth midwives also give a licensure title to the midwives who meet specific state-defined criteria. These midwives are called Licensed Midwives (LMs). In other states, such as Florida, licensed midwifery training culminates in taking the exam for Certified Professional Midwife in order to practice in that state.

A midwife who is a CPM and/or LM would include that acronym after her name as in Jane Smith, CPM, LM.

The above midwives are NOT to be confused with Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) who work with obstetricians in providing maternity care for women delivering in a hospital setting or in some cases a birth center.

Therapeutic Game Stimulates Memory, Increases Self-Esteem for Memory Impaired People

Therapeutic Game Stimulates Memory, Increases Self-Esteem for Memory Impaired People

Therapeutic Senior Moments Game Stimulates Memory, Increases Self Esteem for Memory Impaired Adults

Dallas, TX-January 3, 2002- The Senior Moments Game is a breakthrough resource in communication with the memory-disabled. Developed by Dr. Lurline Morrow, it capitalizes on her problem solving experience earned during her 30-year career as a flight attendant and her doctoral research in crisis management. Her own motherÂ’s stroke proved to be the opportunity for the invention. Combining experience, education, and necessity, Dr. Morrow developed a fun board game that is easy to play. Seeing the success of her game with her mother, Dr. Morrow went on to expand and create The Senior Moments Game for a growing and unique segment of the population, people with memory loss.

Whether severe of mild, memory loss is often an affliction of the elderly, but it can strike at any age. Through trial and error, Dr. Morrow discovered that children and adults who are not memory impaired also could enjoy the game. Thus, The Senior Moments Game can provide hours of fun and quality communication with memory challenged loved ones. The beauty of the game is that it can be a family affair with all ages participating, making time spent with a loved one more meaningful.

Instead of the usual frustrating attempts at conversation with a memory impaired or AlzheimerÂ’s afflicted loved one, the game bridges the gap between nonsensical meanderings and quality communication. It makes formerly futile visits with the memory impaired now see worthwhile. It stimulates memory and reveals new information.

This unique form of therapy, developed as a fun, familiar board game with colorful cards, pawns, and a pair of dice can be played easily with children and adults, memory challenged or not. Both caregivers and their memory impaired patients benefit from The Senior Moments Game, which provides easy, yet pertinent, questions to gently stimulate self-esteem and allow the patient to communicate in a positive way.

In evaluating the degree of memory loss, health care providers often resort to a standard list of questions which are potentially humiliating, such as “What month is it?” Instead, loved ones and care givers can look forward to stimulating happy memories such as their wedding day, their first car, the birth of their children. The Senior Moments Game can supplement standard testing for memory loss and provide positive feedback for both patient and caregiver, as well as for family and loved ones.

An Addition to Our Award-Winning Library of Sign Language Videos for Kids Available March 1st

Salt Lake City, UT (Vocus) February 29, 2008

Due to customer requests, Two Little Hands Productions, creators of Signing Time!, will release Who Has the Frog?, the newest DVD that continues to teach sign language for kids (http://www. signingtime. com/) and adds to Series Two of the Signing Time collection.

“This release of Who Has the Frog is a direct result of the demand for a fun, interactive, educational show that helps build ASL vocabulary, communication, self-confidence and verbal skills,” said Rachel Coleman, co-creator and host of Signing Time. “We are excited to meet the demands of the customer by offering one more volume that encourages sign language and helps children understand relationships between words.”

Featuring Rachel Coleman, her daughter Leah—who is deaf—along with Alex—Leah’s cousin, who can hear—and their animated pet frog Hopkins, Who Has the Frog follows Rachel, Alex and Leah as they try to unlock the mystery of Hopkin’s disappearance, where children learn the signs for Who, What, Where, When and other discovery words.

With Series One containing 13 volumes and Series Two releasing additional volumes throughout year, Signing Time is the largest library of entertaining sign language videos (http://www. signingtime. com/All-DVDs/c34/index. html) of its kind available and reaches children with diverse learning styles, encouraging interaction through signing, singing, speaking and moving. Who Has the Frog exposes children to powerful “connector” words that are critical as they learn to put the vocabulary words learned throughout Signing Time together in to sentences. The playful story combined with music, animation and many other signing children, keeps kids captivated and asking for more Signing Time!

The Signing Time series teaches babies, toddlers and children of all abilities to communicate using American Sign Language (ASL). Two Little Hands Productions, producers and distributors of Signing Time, released seven new volumes earlier this year, including Nice to Meet You, Happy Birthday to You, Move and Groove, My Favorite Season, Going Outside, Days of the Week and My Favorite Sport.

As early as nine months, babies and toddlers can learn to communicate using signs. Research shows that babies who learn to sign may experience reduced frustrations and fewer tantrums, enhanced cognitive development and increased IQ scores, increased bonding with parents, increased interest in books, and quicker development of speaking, spelling and reading skills.

These new volumes and special pricing are available online on March 1st at www. signingtime. com.

Verizon Wireless Funds Small Business Training Program for Domestic Violence Survivors in the Southeast

Verizon Wireless Funds Small Business Training Program for Domestic Violence Survivors in the Southeast

NORCROSS, GA – Women Are Dreamers Too (WADT), a non-profit Business Technical training for Domestic Violence Survivors, received a $10,000 grant from Verizon Wireless, owner an operator of the nation’s most reliable wireless voice network, for South Eastern Program Development

NORCROSS, GA (PRWEB) November 23, 2005

Women Are Dreamers Too (WADT), a non-profit Business Technical training for Domestic Violence Survivors, received a $10,000 grant from Verizon Wireless, owner an operator of the nation’s most reliable wireless voice network, for South Eastern Program Development.

The issue of Domestic Violence in our community, and the cycle of poverty, (a result of batterer-generated economic burden) plagues abused-victims and their children. This grant from Verizon Wireless will support the organization’s business planning, life skills and Internet marketing classes. The business planning class is an intensive, 12-week program designed to help WADT candidates sharpen the skills needed to create, manage, and grow a successful business. The Life Skills courses are specifically designed for entrepreneurial success, using teaching strategies such as modeling and role-playing to help individuals increase self-reliance, self-confidence and promote self-responsibility. Lastly, WADT’s Internet Marketing & E-Commerce program is designed to provide micro businesses with the knowledge, skills, services and technology required to establish and maintain a professional web presence.

Each year, an estimated 1.5 million women and 834,000 men are physically abused by their current or former intimate partner or spouse, according to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, GA. Additionally, one in four American women state that they are or have been physically abused by an intimate partner. In 2002, there were 61, 355 occurrences of family violence in Georgia, and nearly 80% of the aggressors were male. Nearly 5.3 million intimate partner victimizations occur each year among women in the United States, resulting in close to 2 million injuries annually.

“Opportunities like this give us the chance to call attention to this silent epidemic, while helping to educate our community on the prevalence and extent of violence perpetrated against women. We believe that education is the key to ending domestic abuse,” says Cindy Williams, Executive Director, Women Are Dreamers, Too. “Domestic violence destroys people, families and communities everyday. We applaud Verizon Wireless’ commitment to programs like ours that specifically address the needs of domestic violence survivors and help them become economically self-sufficient.”

A long-time supporter of domestic violence awareness and prevention, Verizon Wireless regularly supports community organizations with both grants and in-kind donations. Through its HopeLine program, Verizon Wireless focuses primarily on putting wireless products and services to work to prevent domestic violence. It dedicates its resources to both the prevention of domestic violence and the life rebuilding process. Verizon Wireless' HopeLine phone recycling program collects previously owned wireless handsets to be refurbished, recycled and/or sold.

“Verizon Wireless is always committed to the communities in which we live and work, and we are especially committed to helping address the devastating problem of domestic violence,” said Jim McGean, president of Georgia and Alabama for Verizon Wireless. “Women Are Dreamers Too’s programs provide a valuable service to everyone in our communities, building important entrepreneurial businesses and creating successful business owners. We appreciate the role we play to help these survivors enter the small business marketplace.”

“Domestic violence doesn’t only leave physical scars; it leaves deep emotional wounds and directly impacts the survivor’s self-esteem and self-worth. Survivors of domestic violence often have a difficult time re-entering the workforce, due to low self-esteem. Owning and operating a business boosts confidence and significantly improves earning potentials among participants,” says Williams.

No Quick Fix for Plant Health

No Quick Fix for Plant Health

CanadaÂ’s Weed Man releases book on plant health.

Langley, BC (PRWEB) August 31, 2005

Holistic health care isn’t just for humans anymore, according to a new book by Trinity Western University biology professor, David Clements, Ph. D. Released in March, “New Dimensions in Argroecology,” argues that, in the long run, a holistic, agroecological approach to agriculture and gardening will better benefit plants—and ultimately humans.

“Technology has attempted to harness the productivity of plants,” explains Clements, Editor of the Canadian Journal of Plant Science, “but the growth of industrialized agricultural practices has begun to eclipse significant elements that contribute to the longevity and quality of plant life.”

Clements’ book suggests a healthy garden or crop is one in which all elements of the plant’s ecosystem have been considered, instead of simply applying technological fix to the plant’s problems. “When working with gardens and fields we must learn to work with nature, not against it,” he says. Clements further explains that the weight of the good and the bad of all that interacts with plant life—soil, weather, insects and more—should be equally considered as opportunities to improve both the plant and its products.

“There is so much going on in gardens that we do not see,” says Clements. “Particles, minerals, decaying material and living organisms like worms create complex relationships between plants and the land around them that we need to be attentive to.”

And Clements does not, however, negate the valuable role that technology plays in agroecology. Fertilizer, mechanized harvesting techniques, irrigation systems, and more, have all helped to increase the productivity of plants. They can help flowers bloom on demand or produce fields of wheat in time to meet a $600 billion annual global demand for agricultural products.

“Herbicide resistant crops such as ‘round-up ready’ corn or soybeans is one example,” says Clements. “This innovation enables farmers to use the relatively safe pesticide called round-up when the crop is growing without harming the plant.”

But itÂ’s when technology gets out of balance with plant nature that problems arise. Excessive fertilization and ploughing, ground water contamination and other poorly practiced agricultural techniques can be detrimental to plant life. They can lead to herbicide resistant plants and decrease the nutritional value of produce.

“There are already some instances of weeds developing resistance to round-up,” says Clements. “And planting in the same place for long periods of time can deplete the nutrients in soils, so much so that the vegetables we eat today may not be as nutritious as they were, say, 50 years ago.”

Consequently, Clements prescribes “knowledge-intensive” or “observant plant management.” “We need to watch how plants spring forth and grow. Ask yourself, ‘are the weeds earlier or later than in the previous year? Are there different weeds?’ These kinds of questions might lead to creative solutions to problems or at least warn you of problems.”

“For too long we’ve ignored the inherent complexities in agriculture,” says Clements. “If we see the soil in our gardens or our fields as organic, dynamic stuff, we can learn not to treat it like dirt.”

Tufts Medical Center and NEQCA Select eClinicalWorks EMR/PM : New England Quality Care Alliance, Inc. (NEQCA) and Tufts Medical Center are Implementing Unified Electronic Medical Records and Practice Management System to Improve Efficiency and Patient Care

Tufts Medical Center and NEQCA Select eClinicalWorks EMR/PM : New England Quality Care Alliance, Inc. (NEQCA) and Tufts Medical Center are Implementing Unified Electronic Medical Records and Practice Management System to Improve Efficiency and Patient Care

EClinicalWorks®, a market leader in ambulatory clinical systems, today announced that Tufts Medical Center and the New England Quality Care Alliance, Inc. (NEQCA), the physician network of Tufts, have selected eClinicalWorks unified electronic medical record (EMR) and practice management (PM) software, placing the system in both the academic and community settings. As part of this agreement, eClinicalWorks EMR/PM software is available to nearly 900 primary care and specialty physicians as well as 421 residents. eClinicalWorks Patient Portal will also be used to improve patient communication.

ORLANDO, Fla. (PRWEB) November 3, 2008

"As one of the nation's leading academic medical centers, Tufts Medical Center continuously looks to new initiatives that will positively impact patient care," said Ellen Zane, president and CEO of Tufts Medical Center. "This single electronic medical record system will connect our academic medical center with physicians located in a variety of practice settings throughout the community. It is a unique arrangement that will give us the most comprehensive and up-to-date information possible on our patients, enabling us and our physician partners to deliver better, more comprehensive care."

Tufts Medical Center and NEQCA members will implement eClinicalWorks unified EMR/PM software to have one system across the network of providers—connecting community physicians with local hospitals and the academic center. This system will streamline clinical processes between practice locations and promote patient safety while reducing costs. The Patient Portal will provide a secure, online means for patients to communicate with their doctor's office for aspects of care including patient statements and education.

"Our member physicians have been looking for one comprehensive system that would help with patient care throughout the network," said Jeffrey Lasker, MD, CEO/CMO of New England Quality Care Alliance, Inc. (NEQCA). "Our physicians wanted a product that was intuitive to use and a company that would partner with us on new innovations."

eClinicalWorks EMR/PM will help with reporting and clinical guidelines, provide patient information, including problem lists, allergies, medication history and lab results. Interfaces with area hospitals' in-patient systems will allow for information, such as discharge summaries, to be shared with the patient's regular physician. These tools will help improve patient safety and the quality of care received.

"Tufts is a well-known leader in providing excellent patient care," said Girish Kumar Navani, CEO and co-founder of eClinicalWorks. "We take a great deal of pride in being chosen by the most top-rated academic organizations in the country. Our successful track record helps distinguish eClinicalWorks from other systems and we look forward to working with Tufts Medical Center and NEQCA to meet their collective goals."

SunGard to Provide Direct Market Access for China Index Futures Trading

SunGard is offering a direct market access (DMA) solution to help global Qualified Foreign Institutional Investors (QFIIs) trade Chinese stock-index futures. QFIIs will be able to send orders in FIX Protocol via the SunGard Global Network (SGN) to Chinese futures brokers and use a CFFEX (China Financial Futures Exchange) version of SunGard’s GL Win trading solution.

SunGard is offering a direct market access (DMA) solution to help global Qualified Foreign Institutional Investors (QFIIs) trade Chinese stock-index futures. QFIIs will be able to send orders in FIX Protocol via the SunGard Global Network (SGN) to Chinese futures brokers and use a CFFEX (China Financial Futures Exchange) version of SunGard’s GL Win trading solution.

Trading of Chinese stock-index futures contracts on China Financial Futures Exchange (CFFEX) debuted in April. Although the Chinese financial authority currently limits trading access to local players, QFIIs may be able to participate in the near future. SunGard is able to test electronic DMA access solutions with QFIIs to help them prepare for investing if and when authorization is granted. Chinese futures brokers will be able to receive FIX orders from QFIIs via SunGard’s Global Network. The network links 2,000 asset managers and 110 markets worldwide. It also provides order routing for equities, fixed income and listed derivatives and assists in automating the entire trade lifecycle.

Paul Rowady, senior analyst at TABB Group and author of a recent report on trading in Asian derivatives, commented: "China is both one of the biggest markets – across most asset classes - as well as one of the most difficult to access from outside the country. The West is anxious for any open channel through which this market can be accessed. In general, the QFII designation and, in specific, the CSI 300 Index Futures, represent the most near-term channels to provide such eagerly awaited access.”

Yassine Brahim, president of SunGard's global trading business, said, "Whenever Chinese authorities open access to local marketplaces, there is tremendous interest from the global financial community. Even if stringent requirements must be met before firms can trade China's index futures, requests for access will undoubtedly increase. SunGard helps international investors to access and trade on new electronic marketplaces, offering early testing capability to QFIIs interested in trading China's index futures."

Leading security organizations and experts from business, government and academia offer strategic support to the nationÂ’s first professional journal focusing on IT Security & Infrastructure Protection.

Arlington, VA (PRWEB) January 5, 2005

Market Access International, the publisher of Homeland Defense Journal and a provider of integrated print, online, events and radio media services, is announcing the upcoming launch of IT*SECURITY Magazine, the premiere monthly forum for the nationwide public-private partnership to secure AmericaÂ’s critical infrastructures. IT*SECURITY Magazine will debut in February under the leadership of vice president and executive editor Dan Verton.

IT*SECURITY Magazine will deliver expert-driven IT security content that senior private sector executives and government decision makers can easily understand and apply rapidly to their business environment. IT*SECURITY Magazine will feature case studies focused on best practices in security and infrastructure protection, new technology previews and trends, leadership profiles and guest articles written by an editorial advisory board unmatched in its experience and expertise.

“I am honored to lead a new integrated media endeavor that is desperately needed in the IT security publishing industry,” said Dan Verton, an award-winning journalist and author. “I accepted this position with one mission in mind: to help build a true partnership between the government, the private sector and academia, and to replace first-drafts of history with thoughtful editorial content written by real experts.”

Dan Verton is also the first-place recipient of the 2003 Jesse H. SMARTSTOPS. net Gives Online Investors New Power to Protect Portfolios

SMARTSTOPS. net Gives Online Investors New Power to Protect Portfolios

There are approximately 35 million self-directed online investors, each of whom has made a conscientious decision to take control of their financial future. Now, however, with financial futures in jeopardy, many of these investors are left wondering: “How could I have protected my portfolio?”

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (PRWEB) July 15, 2008

SMARTSTOPS. net today introduced a first-of-its-kind online service to help investors guard against loss and lock in gains by constantly monitoring portfolios for at-risk stocks. SMARTSTOPS. net users receive daily exit price benchmarks, automated exit alerts and a variety of educational and decision-making resources.

Analyzing a range of technical factors for most stocks and ETFs, including volatility, velocity and historical trends, along with an optimal mix of exit methodologies, SMARTSTOPS. net is an easy-to-use, unbiased resource to help investors avoid serious downtrends and improve returns in volatile markets.

"Investors of all experience levels struggle when deciding when to sell a stock," said Brent Collins, CEO of SMARTSTOPS. net. "Whether caused by fear, information overload, lack of interest, emotional attachment or simple time constraints, too many investors let important time-sensitive decisions pass them by as a once-promising stock sinks into oblivion."

The need for a better stock exit strategy is clear for both active traders and buy-and-hold investors, whose current alternatives are either too complex or overly simplistic. Advanced investors using trailing stops are often forced to sell if a temporary decline occurs during a predominately upward trend. And while "buy-and-hold" is widely considered the most conservative and successful strategy over the long term, it can force individual investors to endure extreme volatility. This can be particularly harmful if funds are then required after a stock's value has fallen.

SmartStops can also be a powerful complement to portfolio diversification, a widely accepted approach to managing risk. SmartStops provide an added layer of protection that dynamically responds to market conditions on a daily basis, better managing the downside risk of a well-balanced portfolio.

To demonstrate why more dynamic protection is needed, SMARTSTOPS. net conducted an analysis of the S&P 500 over a 10-year period ending May 2008. It found that:

486 stocks (97%) experienced at least one price decline of 25 percent or more 347 stocks (69%) experienced at least one price decline of 50 percent or more 175 stocks (35%) experienced at least one price decline of 70 percent or more 51 stocks (10%) experienced at least one price decline of 90 percent or more The average price decline experienced was 62 percent "By using SmartStops, investors are alerted when they should consider 'moving to the sidelines' and have a chance to limit their exposure to these price declines," said Charles LeBeau, a renowned exit strategy authority and Director of Analytics with SMARTSTOPS. net.

"Once a stock is sold, investors can reallocate capital to more appealing or stable stocks. Or, they can simply hold it in money market funds to be reinvested once the stock's downward move has ended."

How it works

Traditional stock exit strategies, such as trailing stops, often lead to poor results because they do not take into account the range of market factors that can cause a stock's movement downward. SMARTSTOPS. net, on the other hand, can determine whether a falling stock price reflects standard volatility or if the decline more likely indicates a longer, more significant trend.

To make it even easier for online investors to take advantage of SmartStops, SMARTSTOPS. net will soon announce agreements with major online brokers enabling clients to automatically protect stocks using SmartStops as sell-trigger benchmarks.

"We started SMARTSTOPS. net to provide investors with a solution that is sophisticated in its analysis, yet simple to use and deploy," says Collins. "With SmartStops, investors can make better decisions, removing much of the guesswork of when to sell."

SMARTSTOPS. net offers two primary methods of accessing its sell-protection service:

-- Free On Demand Service: -- Five SmartStops look-ups per day -- Historical charts indicating SmartStops and triggered alerts over varying periods -- SmartStops Portfolio Protection Subscription Services: -- Expanded lookup capabilities -- End-of-day emails with the next day's SmartStops across multiple portfolios -- Historical charts showing SmartStops and triggered alerts over varying periods -- QuickAlerts sent when a stock's price falls to hit that day's SmartStop -- Portfolio management tools -- Subscription pricing -- Free for a 3 stock/ETF portfolio -- $9.95/month for a 10 stock/ETF portfolio -- Additional $9.95 for each next set of 10 symbols All customers can retrieve historical charts, read the SMARTSTOPS. net blog, and access educational and community resources focused on helping investors decide when to sell.

Investors wishing to compare the results of different stock exit strategies over time can review results of back-testing research, which shows SmartStops to have been the superior method.

About SMARTSTOPS. net

SMARTSTOPS. net makes it easy for stock investors to maintain advanced, automated sell-protection that helps lock in gains and defend against losses when stocks are at risk. For more information visit www. SMARTSTOPS. net or contact info@SMARTSTOPS. net.
