Ecstasy Use Drops in U. S

Ecstasy Use Drops in U. S.

Past-year use of the club drug among people over 12 declined by more than one million

(PRWEB) March 9, 2005

The National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) issued its latest Research Report this year focusing on ecstasy abuse, citing that past-year use decreased from 3.2 million people over the age of 12 to 2.1 million from 2002 to 2003. The same report said past-month users dropped by more than 200,000.

This is good news, but ecstasy (MDMA) abuse has spread to a wide range of other settings and demographic subgroups than just raves in the past few years. Despite growing evidence of its harmful effects, ecstasy still has a deceptive reputation as a “safe” drug among its abusers. The idea of just taking a pill with a design stamped on it makes it more attractive and appear less harmful. Additionally, popping a pill is more socially acceptable than snorting, smoking or injecting a drug.

While overall ecstasy use among teenagers has declined over the last couple of years, a survey of adolescents and young adults who reported ecstasy abuse found that more than a third of them were addicted and in need of treatment.

Due to the stimulant properties and the increased physical activity often associated with taking the drug, the result can be a dangerous increase in body temperature that produces dehydration and increased heart rate, while potentially leading to stress on the heart and cardiovascular failure. Additional potential adverse effects include nausea, chills, sweating, involuntary teeth clenching, muscle cramping and blurred vision.

There are other short term effects of the drug such as impaired memory, difficulty processing information and trouble performing skilled activities such as motor vehicle operation. According to NIDA, ecstasy users report feeling anxiety, restlessness, irritability, sadness and depression in the week following moderate exposure to the drug.

Regular MDMA abusers demonstrate elevated levels of anxiety, impulsiveness, aggression, sleep disturbances, lack of appetite, and reduced interest in and pleasure from sex. The cycle of addiction continues by taking more of the same drug to escape the condition brought on by that drug, all the while causing more damage mentally and physically.

One former ecstasy user summed up the drug's effects oh him saying, "I felt so much emotional pain and was so depressed that I wanted to end my life and take all of the world's pain with me." The young man has since become drug-free, but not without help.

American author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard conducted extensive research in the field of drug detoxification and rehabilitation, which is the bases for one of the nationÂ’s largest and most successful drug rehabilitation and education programs, Narconon Arrowhead.

Thousands of individuals suffering from addiction to alcohol and drugs, including ecstasy, have been able to overcome the barriers to full recovery and now lead healthy, productive and drug-free lives all over the world thanks to Narconon Arrowhead.

Oulu, Finland, the 400-year-old Seaside City, Transforms Itself into Hi-tech Growth Cluster

(PRWEB) July 13, 2005

Nordic survival story of a city coping with pressures of globalization. Oulu is a model city for globalization and structural change. The 400-year-old small town of Northern Finland has doubled its population in a couple of decades and has become prosperous and created itself a new future by transforming into a cradle of hi-tech.

"In stead of withering away we decided to turn our focus toward mobile phone technology and start luring top companies, experts, and a top university into our city. Right now we are a major laboratory for the development of tomorrowÂ’s wireless technology. Young, talented experts still flow into our city," Kari Nenonen, the city mayor of Oulu, says.

Oulu is in relative terms FinlandÂ’s fastest growing city due to its focus on ICT business.

"Oulu makes a good example for the whole of Europe, in a sense that one should and must develop a few closely picked areas, which can eventually turn into engines of economic growth and employment. The European Union needs to create a centralized European model of expertise, which has already been agreed upon as part of the Lisbon agreement. I challenge European political leaders and city mayors into this discussion. Europe has no reason to lift its hands up within the pressures of globalization," Kari Nenonen stated, referring to his experience with Oulu.

Finland’s city of Oulu was founded in 1605 by King of Sweden Karl IX. For hundreds of years Oulu was a petit bourgeois seaside town, but from the start of the 20th century – after the fall of the sailing ship and tar era – it regressed into a remote town, where economic growth came to a standstill and the state’s coffers were impoverished. The changes in the global economy took a tough toll on Oulu.

The turning point in OuluÂ’s history came after the town fought itself a university during the 1950s. A true step forward came after the university decided to concentrate its resources on electronic and computer technology sciences, because already then many technology companies were starting to set up R&D operations in the region in a search for a talented workforce. The biggest and most significant player was Nokia Corp, which chose Oulu as a strategically important center for its mobile phone technologyÂ’s R&D operations.

More than 200,000 people live within the city of Oulu and its neighboring municipalities. The number of inhabitants has grown by 4,000 to 5,000 people annually. "Without such boom, there could be only some 50,000 of us," Nenonen estimates. Without the city’s focus on high technology, Oulu could be one of those losing towns – those that have been hit by the challenges of structural change and those that can be found throughout Europe.

Globalization is taking an especially hard hit on EuropeÂ’s welfare states, a group that also includes Finland due to its high living standard and strong economic growth. Industrial handiwork is transferring to countries of cheap labor.

"We in Oulu are fighting against the negative impacts of globalization with our own tools. We are creating preconditions that make it possible for companies of the new economy and new technology to operate successfully. We seek to keep operational costs low. We have supported the set up of a local technology center by offering reasonably priced land to build on. We support commercialization of innovations by sponsoring company development firms and a company that specializes in boosting the commercialization of innovations. We do not, however, give out plain cash to companies," Nenonen said.

"Our keyword is expertise. We aim at developing our city so that it offers an operational environment, workforce, a pleasant atmosphere, and the needed infrastructure for experts. Knowledge is based on a broad-based top-quality university - and occupational-level education. Our city is the home of some 30,000 higher-level education students," Nenonen emphasized.

Because Oulu is the biggest center of northern Finland, there is naturally some structural long-term unemployment in the region. However, the amount is a mere 2.5 pct of the total workforce, and unemployment is continuously declining. Although the amount of labor-intensive industry is declining as opportunities transfer to Asia as well as Russia, the construction and service sectors are creating new workplaces, as the number of technology and health promoting wellness technology businesses climbs. Already now there are some 600 ICT-sector businesses and 70 wellness technology companies in the Oulu region. Meanwhile, one ICT sector workplace helps to create an additional 3-4 other employment opportunities. The ICT and wellness technology sector employs a combined 20,000 people approximately in the Oulu region. The figure includes jobs created through outsourcing operations, but is even higher when taking into count those jobs created indirectly.

Wireless technology – Oulu’s newest investment

The City of Oulu has decided to invest in its future for the celebration of its 400-year anniversary. The city will offer nearly all of its inhabitants a free wlan-network, which will help to serve both commercial purposes as well as help the city in providing a medium with which to communicate with its residents. The cityÂ’s investment is globally unique, and the building of wireless wlan-networks has already begun.

"I believe that investing in such wireless information society is important for the future development of the city. It helps create new companies, workplaces and to boost the creation of commercially-driven content in our city. Thousands of information technology experts and those humanists providing content will be offered new work opportunities as Oulu puts effort into developing the next generationsÂ’ information society. This again creates more work and additional tax revenue from the service sector. It also helps the cityÂ’s own information provision to its residents. Already now many reserve books from the library by sending an SMS via their mobile phones," Nenonen says.

Oulu is opening up its gates for foreign companies and investments. It is not worth coming to Oulu in the search for cheap assembly labor, but in stead for the search of top expertise and the thousands of educated workers, "brains" that reside in our city. We are happy to offer such to others also, and I am confident that we are competitive in terms of the amount and quality of our workforce, good flight connections, business locations and other general costs,” says Nenonen.

Our newest focal point is wellness technology that combines medicine and information technology sciences. "In that field we have already achieved a lot. Many globally well-recognized companies such as Polar -- known for its heart-rate monitoring devices -- are based in the Oulu region. Many smaller companies have also taken steps to the international markets from the city. Our university and research facilities collaborate closely with companiesÂ’ product development and there are several success stories waiting to be made public in yet unopened drawers," he adds.

Holistic Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation for the 21st Century - Fact or Fiction?

Holistic Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation for the 21st Century - Fact or Fiction?

Holistic drug and alcohol rehabilitation program designed by recovering addicts with over 17 years of experience. They have found an effective balance of traditional and alternative means for overcoming the vicious cycle of alcoholism and drug addiction. More information can be found at http://www. drugrehabcenter. com and http://www. helpaddicts. com.

(PRWEB) March 3, 2004

Alcoholism and drug addiction has reached epic proportions in the 21st century. Crime rates are escalating all over the world. People from every race, color and socio-economic background are becoming addicted to drugs such as Crack, Cocaine, Crystal Meth, Heroin, Alcohol and prescription drugs. As a result of addiction and drug abuse, marriages and families are being devastated; children are being endangered, both directly and indirectly.

The statistics are not encouraging. According to the 2001 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA), a project of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the number of persons with substance dependence or abuse increased from 14.5 million (6.5% of the population) in 2000 to 16.6 million (7.3%) in 2001. We can no longer afford to ignore the impact of drugs and alcohol in our country and in our world. Addiction professionals need to continuously change and reevaluate the effectiveness of their treatment approaches. There are promising new treatment approaches that need to be properly funded; instead they are being held up by political and bureaucratic red tape. The intention of this article is to promote public awareness of the growing epidemic of addiction, expand the reader's knowledge and understanding of the root causes of addiction, and to emphasize the need to reevaluate the current wisdom in the field of addiction by developing and funding more effective methods of treatment. By acting locally and thinking globally, it is possible to turn the tide of addiction rates around.

A number of factors contribute to the development of addictive behaviors such as early childhood trauma, mental disorders, family history, and environment. Early childhood trauma includes sexual and/or physical abuse, neglect, or abandonment. Some of the mental illnesses that often accompany addiction are learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder, depression and a multitude of others. Addictions are often developed through an attempt to alleviate the symptoms of these illnesses.

The 2001 NHSDA report states that among adults with mental illness in 2001, 20.3% (about 3 million people) were dependent on or abused alcohol or illicit drugs. The rate among adults without serious mental illnesses was about 6%. Family history is also very important as certain genetic factors that are attributed to behavior may be passed down from generation to generation. Genetics is also further influenced by the physical environment surrounding the individual. Some people develop their addictions at an early age and never learn to cope with adversity, thereby propagating their addictive behavior. As these individuals grow older, these behaviors become more deeply rooted and their addiction grows stronger until it becomes more difficult to satisfy.

Addiction destroys a human being on every level of their existence. It ravages them mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually, leaving them virtually drowning in a sea of loneliness and despair. The hope that they may one day win their battle to stop using vanishes completely. They lose touch with their higher power and their life becomes a seemingly endless series of failures that eventually leads to total resignation to their addiction and their pain. People suffering from addiction not only abuse drugs and alcohol, but every person, place, and thing with whom they come in contact. Although, it is not their intention to cause such tumultuous pain in those around them, these battered emotions seep into all areas of their lives, making attempts at recovery futile.

In years past, addiction treatment centers have focused primarily on treating the psychological aspects of the disease of addiction, while neglecting to address the delicate inter-connective balance of the body, mind and spirit. Most individuals who enter into a 28-day treatment program receive education about their addiction, they scratch the surface of the issues that underlie their addictive behavior, and are introduced to the program of AA (Alcoholics Anonymous), NA (Narcotics Anonymous), and GA (Gamblers Anonymous).

After treatment, clients are encouraged to live in a supportive environment such as a ¾ way house. However, most return to their homes and lives unprepared to live in a life without drugs. In some cases, this traditional approach to treatment may be effective. Usually, the success rate of traditional addiction treatment is very low. The wisdom of Western Medicine is that if you have a symptom, treat it. If a person has a headache they take Ibuprofen/Acetaminophen to alleviate the symptoms but never determine the root cause of the headache.

The Holistic approach to medicine and treatment holds that human beings have a body, a mind and a spirit. These elements of the human being are intertwined and exist in a delicate balance that determines positive or negative physical/mental health. The holistic method respects this balance and approaches treatment with the understanding that in order to achieve positive results this equilibrium must be restored.

Body

The 21st century holistic approach begins first with the body. What we ingest internally creates the foundation for the proper functioning of our mind and body. Stimulants and toxins such as caffeine, refined sugars, processed foods, food additives, and a poor overall diet contribute immensely to an imbalance in brain chemistry. It is crucial that these foods and additives be eliminated or significantly reduced in the diet in order to restore healthy brain functioning. In exchange, a complete diet consisting of fruit, fiber, fish, turkey, whole grains, protein, and lots of water must be embraced. Generally, those entering treatment are dehydrated, hypo/hyperglycemic, and protein deficient. They also need to be evaluated for certain bacterial and fungal infections, such as Candida albicans. Chemical dependency along with an insufficient diet can wreak havoc on an individual's delicate immune system. These complications can contribute to depression, agitation, and decreased energy stores and eventually to relapse.

Along with a proper diet, a good vitamin supplement regiment is also necessary because much of the vitamin, mineral, and amino acid stores, which are the building blocks of neurotransmitters in the brain, are depleted from drug and alcohol abuse. Also, exercise, meditation, neuro-feedback, and stress reduction techniques are essential in keeping our mind and body stable. Some excellent disciplines for achieving mind/body congruency are yoga, tai chi, and karate.

Acupuncture is a modality that can often assist the body in the rebalancing process. This treatment allows energy to flow into the body to stimulate the production of neurotransmitters and calm some of the cravings for drugs and alcohol. Also, nurturing the body with hot baths and steams, to rid the body of toxins, good music, and gentle relaxation will help to restore peace of mind.

Mind

Current research has suggested that certain chemical imbalances in the brain appear to play an important role in contributing to addiction. The use and abuse of drugs and alcohol causes brain chemistry to deviate even further from the normal range. The 2001 NHSDA reported that those who use illicit drugs were twice as likely to have serious mental illnesses as compared with those adults who did not abuse illicit drugs. With chronic abuse, a vicious cycle is formed that grows exponentially over time. This causes a lack of concentration, emotional instability, feelings of depression, and a total absence of a moral and spiritual balance. In many cases, medication is necessary to correct the chemical imbalance resulting from mental illnesses. In some gamblers suffering from chronic relapse for example, psychotropic medication is an integral part of their recovery. It is paramount to change the root causes of the addictive behavior in order for treatment to be successful. Some effective new therapies that can effectuate tremendous changes in behavior are EMDR, NLP, and neuro-feedback.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an approach to psychotherapy that uses eye movements to stimulate the information processing in the brain. This therapy provides much faster results than traditional therapy. It is often used for treating trauma such as: sexual abuse, domestic violence, war, crime, depression, addiction, phobias, and self-esteem issues. A recent study performed by Kaiser-Permanente found that EMDR was twice as effective and in about half the amount of care than typical therapy. Overall, EMDR allows the brain to heal its own wounds at the same rate that the rest of the body is able to heal its physical ailments, making a long and tedious recovery a thing of the past.

Another interesting modality that is very effective is Neuro Linguistic Programming (N. L.P.). NLP is the study of the structure of subjective experience. It is a therapeutic tool, which can reprogram a client's belief systems and behaviors. NLP incorporates a set of models on how communication can be affected by subjective experience. It utilizes a change in language and thought processes to understand behaviors.

Neuro-feedback is a cutting-edge technique that trains the brain in order to help it improve body function regulation and overall brain health. When there is poor brain functioning, it is recognized through the EEG (Electroencephalogram). By challenging the brain, much like muscles are challenged in physical exercise to improve their strength, normal brain functionality can be restored. The benefits of neuro-feedback include healthier sleep patterns, relief from anxiety and depression, and attention and emotional management. Emotional management is very important in how an individual reacts to a particular situation.

Spirit

One of the most important steps in addiction recovery is psychological awareness. Becoming aware of personal speech, thoughts, body language, and actions is crucial in maintaining a life free from chemical dependency. It is important to learn how to avoid the pitfalls of negative thoughts and negative people. An individual must learn that it is more important to be kind than to be right, and to develop values and integrity and finally, to learn to be good to one's self and others by trusting in a higher power. By believing in a higher power, it is easier to submit oneself to recovery and treatment. The relationship that is developed through spirituality enriches life and gives hope and inspiration. Recovering individuals discover that a life free from the clutches of drugs and alcohol is not only possible, but is a life well worth living. Spirituality is the foundation for the development of a positive living philosophy. The twelve-step programs are a spiritual way of life. They are non-denominational, anonymous and non-controversial. The success of these programs is based upon "the therapeutic value of one addict helping another". Many atheist and agnostic individuals have been able to embrace the twelve steps with their own personal concept of a higher power. The role of a higher power in their life becomes G. O.D. (Good Orderly Direction). Every addict that is serious about recovery is able to attain serenity and fullness of life by applying these steps and these principles to their daily life.

Conclusion

Addiction treatment has come a long way through the years and still has a long way to go. In the 21st century, it appears that the most effective approach to treating addictive disorders is the holistic approach. In this approach, individuals suffering from the disease of addiction are treated with respect, dignity, and as a whole person with a body, mind and spirit. It takes time to heal and to restore the proper functioning of these three elements, and they are fundamental to a successful recovery. It is very important to increase public awareness of addiction in order to decrease the stigma that surrounds it, which is preventing some of the afflicted from accessing necessary treatment. There are roughly 5 million people in this country who need addiction treatment that are not receiving it. If our communities embraced a more holistic attitude toward recovery, perhaps there would be a decrease in the number needed to treat and more resources would become available to the population suffering from addiction. Knowledge of addiction is a powerful tool that will assist our planet in defending itself against this moral, physical, and spiritual decay.

Subscribers to International Homeschooling Magazine Receive More Than a Good Read

The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, LLC, recently announced their “Spring Bouquet of Gifts” for new subscribers featuring free gifts from 19 education and family-focused companies.

Cool, California (PRWEB) July 11, 2005

The Old Schoolhouse Magazine recently offered homeschool families a way to stretch their spring curriculum budgets. New subscribers receive not only a two-year subscription to the magazine but also cards redeemable for free products and samples, with an estimated retail value of almost $300.00.

Only 5,000 new subscribers will be able to participate in the spring program, which features gifts such as free software from Homeway Press and a unit study from Lasting Lessons. Publishing house Barker Creek is offering participants a book from the award-winning Draw Write Now series while TEACH Magazine provided respondents with a free six month subscription. BobÂ’s Red Mill has even joined in, offering not only a package of their 5-Grain cereal but educational materials about whole grains.

According to Gena Suarez, publisher of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, the company started out with 5,000 packages but was swiftly down to fewer than 1,500 by the end of June. “They are going fast,” she says. “It’s right about $300 in free curriculum and people are spreading the word online and through friends.”

Past issues of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine have focused on the Renaissance period and the Civil War era. Home education methods such as unit studies, Classical education and the teachings of Charlotte Mason have been featured. Special sections devoted to homeschool and special education conventions and field trip suggestions offer readers resources and options for travel, while an upcoming “Resource Room” expansion will offer families with special needs students food for thought.

Delphian School Student Wins Top Science Award

Delphian School Student Wins Top Science Award

Elliot Alexander, McMinnville resident and student of The Delphian School, is one of twelve winners of the 2005 Young Naturalist Awards.

(PRWEB) April 10, 2005

Elliot Alexander, McMinnville resident and student of The Delphian School, is one of twelve winners of the 2005 Young Naturalist Awards, an annual science contest sponsored by the American Museum of Natural History in New York, and the J. P. Morgan Chase Foundation, to recognize young people in grades seven through twelve for excellence in the natural sciences.

Using biology, Earth science, or astronomy as a departure point, the Young Naturalist Awards of 2005 invited students to choose a scientific topic or question and embark upon a scientific inquiry of their own. Applicants were asked to document their findings in an essay. Scientists and educators at the Museum judged and selected the awardees, whose outstanding work is published on the Museum’s web site. Delphian School student Elliot Alexander’s award winning essay, entitled “Dance of the Moons,” is the result of an astronomy project wherein he used a personal telescope to track and photograph the orbits of the moons of Jupiter.

Commenting on his efforts, Delphian School student Elliot said: “I really enjoyed this project. I learned about orbits and telescopes. In addition, I gained a better understanding of how scientific research is done. It's exciting the first time to look in the telescope and see things you've never seen before.”

Delphian School student Elliot AlexanderÂ’s award includes a $1500 college scholarship and a fully paid invitation for himself and a family member to attend the award ceremony at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City in the spring of 2005.

The Delphian School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school offering college preparatory, English-as-a-Second-Language and summer programs for elementary through high school students. The Delphian School is licensed to use Applied Scholastics(TM) educational services.

Back to School, Back to Work: How RepairClinic is Helping on Both Fronts

Back to School, Back to Work: How RepairClinic is Helping on Both Fronts

At a time when college tuition is rising, taxes are up and unemployment is at a record high, online appliance parts retailer, RepairClinic, is doing its part to assist a number of local college students with jobs. With a total of 125 employees, more than ten percent are currently or have recently been enrolled in college classes; some are even full-time students.

Canton, MI (Vocus) September 15, 2010

At a time when college tuition is rising, taxes are up and unemployment is at a record high, online appliance parts retailer, RepairClinic (http://www. repairclinic. com/), is doing its part to assist a number of local college students with jobs. With a total of 125 employees at RepairClinic, more than ten percent are currently or have recently been enrolled in college classes; some are even full-time students.

The environment at RepairClinic lends itself well to the college lifestyle: flexible hours, a casual work environment, decent pay, good benefits, excellent training, and an overall atmosphere of “family”. In addition, the RepairClinic location is very convenient to many local colleges: the company headquarters is about five miles from Eastern Michigan University, eight miles from University of Michigan main campus, and about 15 minutes from both Washtenaw Community and Schoolcraft Colleges.

Dave Mielke, Dean, College of Business, at Eastern Michigan University (http://www. emich. edu/), stresses the importance of work experience for college students, especially in today’s highly-competitive marketplace. “Real world experience is absolutely essential for every business student. Work experience provides the context for what the student is learning in the classroom, and in many cases, an opportunity to apply what they are learning. There is always a concern that students may work ‘too many hours’ during the school year, but working while in school also develops other skills, such as time management, discipline and the demonstration of a work ethic, invaluable to employers when students interview for full-time positions.”

Ryan Huntley, college student and Call Center Supervisor at RepairClinic (http://www. repairclinic. com/), has seen firsthand how school and work can benefit one another. According to Huntley, “Working at RepairClinic has helped me take more interest in many of my business classes at Eastern [Michigan University]. In my Operations Management class we were discussing ‘queuing theory’. Many people in my class thought it was boring, but I was interested, as a supervisor in a call center – it helped me look at ways to reduce our phone hold times.

Amber Fontana, a student at Eastern Michigan University, who also works at RepairClinic (http://www. repairclinic. com/), feels she has the best of both worlds: “I’m able to pay my own bills while still going to school full-time. I can live off-campus, pay my rent, utilities, car and phone payment and buy books. And they [RepairClinic] also provide me with health and dental insurance, which every college student needs.” Amber says that the flexible work schedule and supportive group of co-workers help make it possible to work full-time and still stay on top of her classes.

Another RepairClinic (http://www. repairclinic. com/) employee, Sean Payne, is studying accounting at Eastern Michigan University. He also sees many advantages to having a job while in school, including the ability to better understand many issues taught in his classes, because he’s becoming familiar with them at work. Sean says he’s using his paycheck for books and “to cut down on the amount of money taken out for student loans.”

According to Chris Hall, RepairClinic President and Co-Founder, “We’re glad that we can support local students as they pursue their education, but having college students as employees has been good for the company, too. We appreciate what our student-employees have to offer: they’re generally quick learners, energetic, full of fresh ideas and highly-motivated, not only by their need for money, but by their desire to learn. Overall, we’ve been lucky to find some great employees from the college student pool.”

The Indie Managers Association Presents Film & TV Licensing Seminar for the Independent Music Community

The Indie Managers Association Presents Film & TV Licensing Seminar for the Independent Music Community.

The Indie Managers Association (IMA), a company that promotes the education of the independent music management community, presents the “GETTING YOUR MUSIC INTO THE FILM, TV, VIDEOGAME AND INTERNATIONAL MARKETS” seminar on Friday August 27, 2004 in Rockville Maryland.

ROCKVILLE, MD (PRWEB) July 5, 2004

This daylong seminar is organized to provide timely, useful and practical information on the subject of music licensing and is geared towards the independent music community. This includes artists, songwriters, musicians, producers, record labels, publishers and managers. Anybody that creates music or represents somebody who creates music can benefit from this seminar. Almost all styles of music can be licensed and used in the Film, TV and International marketplace, sometimes regardless of label affiliations or track record. However, licensing music presents many sets of challenges that must be fully explored and understood in order to succeed in the business.

Independent artists, musicians, publishers and labels have to become more proactive in marketing music copyrights to potential licensees and music users. Music-based licensing royalties in North America alone totaled more than $120 million last year and accounted for more than $2 billion in retail sales, according to the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers Association.

About the Indie Managers Association (IMA).

The Indie Managers Association is organized and dedicated to serving the independent music management community by adopting a code of ethics; providing educational manuals; offering discounts on products and services; supplying promotional resources; drafting quarterly newsletters and creating opportunities to cultivate professional relationships through roundtable discussions and live chats.

The Unscientific Nature Of The Diagnostic And Statistical Manual For Mental Disorders

The Unscientific Nature Of The Diagnostic And Statistical Manual For Mental Disorders

Canadian psychologist Tana Dineen reports, "Unlike medical diagnoses that convey a probable cause, appropriate treatment and likely prognosis, the disorders listed in DSM-IV are terms arrived at through peer consensus"-literally, a vote by a psychiatric association member.

(PRWEB) September 5, 2005

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, 4th Edition (DSM-IV), published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA), is the psychiatrist's bible of "disorders" from which psychiatric diagnoses and their treatment are derived. The current edition lists 374 psychiatric conditions that have been identified as mental disorders.

It is not only used to diagnose mental illness and prescribe treatment, but as an authoritative source to resolve child custody battles, discrimination cases based on alleged psychiatric disability, augment court testimony, modify education, and much more. It is also an essential element of the pharmaceutical/ psychiatric alliance to invent diseases and then sell the drugs to manage these diseases and keep the public medicated.

Yet, the disorders contained in the DSM-IV are arrived at by consensus, not by scientific criteria. Canadian psychologist Tana Dineen reports, "Unlike medical diagnoses that convey a probable cause, appropriate treatment and likely prognosis, the disorders listed in DSM-IV are terms arrived at through peer consensus"-literally, a vote by a psychiatric association member.

Further refuting any medical validity to DSM-IV, in 2004, John Read, senior lecturer in psychology at Auckland University, New Zealand said, "More and more problems have been redefined as 'disorders' or 'illnesses,' supposedly caused by genetic predispositions and biochemical imbalances. Life events are relegated to mere triggers of an underlying biological time-bomb. Feeling very sad has become 'depressive disorder.' Worrying too much is 'anxiety disorder.' Excessive gambling, drinking, drug use or eating are also illnesses. Â… Making lists of behaviors, applying medical-sounding labels to people who engage in them, then using the presence of those behaviors to prove they have the illness in question is scientifically meaningless."

Brian Beaumont, President of the Vancouver Chapter of the Citizens Commission on Human Rights says “Children signs of ‘disorder’, as reported in the DSM, occur when they are deceitful, break rules, can't sit still or wait in lines, have trouble with math or writing, don’t pay attention to details, don't listen, don't like to do homework or lose their school assignments or pencils, or speak out of turn, gaze out of the window in class, fidget and on and on. These things describe any healthy, active, normal child. Psychiatrist are therefore diagnosing normal childhood behavior as a ‘mental Disorder’ and then prescribing powerful mind-altering drugs to ‘treat’ the made up disorder”.

Just as illnesses can be "voted in" and then used to justify a treatment, political pressure can be brought to bear to vote illnesses "out" - as in 1973, when APA committee members voted-5,584 to 3,810-to cease calling homosexuality a mental disorder after gay activists picketed the APA conference. Attorney Lawrence Stevens, a former assistant District Attorney in California, commented: "If mental illness were really an illness in the same sense that physical illnesses are illnesses, the idea of deleting homosexuality or anything else from the categories of illness by having a vote would be as absurd as a group of physicians voting to delete cancer or measles from the concept of disease."

To understand how this "not very good" collection of opinions assumed its false scientific aura, it is also necessary to examine the influence of the pharmaceutical industry. Research has documented that at least one third of the 182 international advisors to the DSM IV (released in 1994) have received funding by pharmaceutical companies. They also all belong to one or more international and national psychiatric groups (i. e. the World Psychiatric Association, the World Federation for Mental Health, and the Association for European Psychiatrists) that in turn receive the majority of their funding from pharmaceutical companies. Non-medical groups, such as National Mental Health Association and the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) that also receive pharmaceutical funding, also provided their opinion for the construction of DSM-IV. These groups create the illusion that there is a big demand for psychotropic drugs.

Dr. Thomas Dorman, a member of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom and fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, says, "In short, the whole business of creating psychiatric categories of 'disease,' formalizing them with consensus, and subsequently ascribing diagnostic codes to them, which in turn leads to their use for insurance billing, is nothing but an extended racket furnishing psychiatry a pseudo-scientific aura. The perpetrators are, of course, feeding at the public trough."

There are so many signs of unethical behavior and public deception that a full governmental investigation is warranted into the DSM. Currently, millions of children are being diagnose with some mental "disorder" in our schools based on the DSM, leading to their being prescribed dangerous psychiatric drugs.

Prepared by the Citizens Commission on Human Rights International, a mental health watchdog group established by the Church of Scientology in 1969 to investigate and expose psychiatric violations of human rights.

IF you feel you have been harmed by a psychiatrist please call the Citizens Commission on Human Rights at 1-800-670-2247.

Social Media Resistance Study launched by Communitelligence and USC's Institute for Communication Technology Management (CTM): As Part of Its Executing Social Media Conference Series, Communitelligence, in Partnership with the USC Institute for Communication Technology Management (CTM), is Conducting the First Ongoing Research on Corporate Resistance to the New Social Media Technologies

A unique partnership between the Communitelligence Learning Academy and the Institute for Communication Technology Management (CTM), is conducting the first research on resistance to the "Millennial generation" social media technologies such as blogs, podcasts, social networks, online video, RSS, wikis and micromedia that are penetrating the corporate world.

LOS ANGELES (PRWEB) May 5, 2008

The Communitelligence & USC 2008 Social Media Resistance Survey is now live. Communication, Public Relations, Marketing, IT and business professionals are encouraged to take the brief online survey.

"Media pundits have speculated that many enterprises have resisted these broad-based, peer-to-peer architectures, hoping to preserve proprietary information and control their marketing messages," says Morley Winograd, Executive Director, Institute for Communication Technology Management (CTM), University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business. "No objective data exists, however, to quantify this corporate resistance or measure whether the resistance is fading as companies better realize the potential marketing and productivity benefits. Using an online survey process, CTM and Communitelligence hope to establish the first data on this topic, to enable more substantial and rigorous academic research in the future."

"Communitelligence is excited to be a partner in this unique research project," says John Gerstner, President of the Communitelligence Learning Academy, which produces the Executing Social Media Conference & Workshops series (next conference in Los Angeles May 21-22, 2008). "Resistance to social media programs is often brought up during our conferences. This research will help surface where the pain points are and focus the discussion around findings."

Preliminary results will be shared at the third Executing Social Media Interactive Conference & Workshops in Los Angeles May 21-22, which includes Social Shuffle brainstorming, interactive workshops, and valuable business insights from a star lineup of experts and practitioners.

Local Drug Rehab And Florida Radio Show Speak Out On Prescription Drug Epidemic

Suncoast Rehab Center Joins Prescription Addiction Radio In An Effort To Educate Floridians On Solutions To The Prescription Drug Epidemic That Claims The Lives Of Thousands Of Floridians Every Year

Clearwater, FL (PRWEB) August 28, 2009

Prescription Addiction Radio is a weekly talk radio show that was founded in an effort to assist individuals and families whose lives have been affected by prescription drug dependency and abuse. Founder Larry Golbom is a pharmacist by day but has devoted his free time to this cause because he has seen first hand the problem that prescription drugs has created in this country.

On Sunday Larry was joined by Eric Mitchell, President of Suncoast Rehabilitation Center in Spring Hill, FL. Suncoast will now become a regular part of the show in an effort to expand its current drug education and prevention activities and assist the show in reaching out to more Floridians who may be caught in the prescription addiction trap. You can listen to Sunday night's show at www. prescriptionaddictionradio. com.

Band members from Thrown Alive and Kore were also part of Sunday night's show, and the group discussed many topics such as "Civil Liberties vs. Protecting Our Children", a discussion regarding certain Libertarian's efforts to legalize drugs and how that would affect families across America.

Suncoast Rehab Center hopes to help get the show into other markets so that its message and assistance can be available to more Floridians. "prescription drugs are ruining lives and destroying families all over Florida and we feel that we have a responsibility as treatment providers and citizens of Florida to do our part to get the truth about prescription drugs to as many Floridians as possible" said Eric Mitchell of Suncoast.

Pharma Can Double Sales in Two Years by Increasing Patient Adherence

Pharma Can Double Sales in Two Years by Increasing Patient Adherence

Pharmaceutical product teams can recapture lost sales and even double sales if they can help patients stay in therapy over two years. What patients need from the pharmaceutical industry are education and information materials that they can understand and that motivate them to stay in therapy.

McLean, Virginia (PRWEB) May 19, 2009

A message from Dr. Dorothy L. Smith, President and CEO Consumer Health Information Corporation: "Patients can make or break the success of a product. Product teams that are able to meet the needs of their patients will not only survive these tough economic times but they will also recapture lost sales. A product team can double sales if they can help a patient stay in therapy over two years. Sales can easily triple if the patient stays in therapy three years. No other industry in the world has such a window of opportunity for increasing sales but also helping people receive a good therapeutic outcome. The challenge is to meet the needs of the patient."

Dr. Dorothy L. Smith, (http://www. consumer-health. com/biography. htm) President and CEO Consumer Health Information Corporation (CHIC) and an expert in evidence-based patient adherence program development and REMS, spoke about the importance of the patient's role in successful therapeutic outcomes to an audience comprised of pharmaceutical industry executives, clinicians and researchers.

Dr. Smith stressed that, "In today's volatile economy, the number of patients who are cutting costs and not filling their initial prescriptions has doubled from 10% to 20%. As many as 50% - 85% are not refilling their prescriptions for a variety of reasons other than cost."

Currently, patients prescribed medications for the treatment of chronic conditions are making decisions to drop out of therapy at an alarming rate (see the attached chart).

Recapture Lost Sales

When patients drop out of therapy unexpectedly, the monies invested to have a physician write the initial prescription are lost. The area above the curve represents lost sales due to patient nonadherence. Assuming 90% initial compliance, lost sales equal approximately 60% at two years and up to 80%-90% at three years depending on the specific product.

The key to recapturing lost sales is to educate and motivate patients to stay in treatment. It is a win-win situation. Patients will have improved treatment outcomes and decreased healthcare costs. When patient education is done correctly, product sales should at least double.

Help Patients Get Through the First Year

Research shows that when patients are able to manage their medications for one year, they are more likely to stay in therapy and not drop out.

Dr. Smith urged the pharmaceutical industry to develop more effective patient education programs during the first year of treatment. These programs must:
Teach patients how to integrate the dosage regimens into their daily lifestyles so that taking the medication stops being a hassle. Teach patients how to manage side effects correctly so they do not become frightened and stop the drug suddenly. Be evidence-based, practical, and motivational and meet patient comprehension requirements. The majority of patients are receiving information they cannot understand. Give patients the information they need at the different stages in which they make decisions. This means that health professionals need different patient tools at each of these different stages. It is a waste of money for a pharmaceutical company to encourage health professionals to redistribute the same patient material at every clinic visit. Teach patients how to recognize signs of progress. When patients are convinced that a medication is helping them, they will be more likely to decide to stay in therapy. Dr. Smith summarized that, "Providing patients with information they can understand will lead to better health outcomes, decrease patient dropouts and boost product ROI."

Surviving The Minefield Of The Eleven Plus

Surviving The Minefield Of The Eleven Plus

It is a well known fact that competition for places at selective private and grammar schools is extremely high. More and more parents are deciding that this route will provide the best opportunities for their children. Many parents want to maximise their children’s chances of gaining offers at several schools from which they can then choose. As a result two teachers have set up a website to provide advice to help parents successfully navigate their children through the eleven plus selection process.

(PRWEB) February 21, 2006

Many parents realise that the only thing of lasting value that they can give their children is the best education possible. However, competition for places at selective grammar and private schools is extremely high as parents strive to provide the best opportunities for their children.

With this in mind, two parents, who are specialist teachers themselves, have set up a website providing guidelines to help parents navigate through the eleven plus selection process. Parents want to maximise their children’s chances of gaining offers at several schools from which they can then choose. However, many parents have no idea what this involves, or how easy it is to give their children a head start.

As parents also facing the eleven plus process, these two teachers extensively researched all aspects of the exam and have created a website that provides daunted parents with specialist maths and English worksheets and exam papers. This enables parents and children to become familiar with the style, layout and topics covered in entrance exams across the country. The website also provides objective advice on topics such as current educational trends, local educational authorities, and the benefits of good health, diet and sleep.

All aspects of the exam process have been considered. This includes timetable planning, commonly asked questions and downloadable timed exam papers with answers. This allows parents to provide their children with a comprehensive set of resources that can be worked through in the comfort of their own home without the exorbitant cost of private tutors.

In only its first two weeks, this website has already had over five hundred visitors. Testimonials comment that the advice, worksheets and exam papers provided by the site are clear, user-friendly and reassuring.

With more and more parents deciding that a grammar or private school education will provide the best opportunities for their children, competition is steadily rising for these coveted selective places. This site helps children to achieve their full potential and to avoid the anxiety and tension surrounding the exams.

Freedombands. com Raises Over $30,000 in 2005 to Support US Troops and Their Families

Freedombands. com Raises Over $30,000 in 2005 to Support US Troops and Their Families

The Jensen Family has reached $30,000 in donations and more colors of Freedom Bands are now available.

Orem, UT (PRWEB) April 8, 2005

The fund-raising efforts of freedombands. com leaps past the $30,000 mark as new colors and designs become available. The familiar red bands inscribed with “LIFE LIBERTY FREEDOM” are now available in brand-new white, blue, swirl, camouflage and glow-in the dark. The more prominent black lettering of these new Freedom Bands allows wearers to clearly show their support for our American troops.

Not only do Freedom Bands raise money that is used 100% to support the US troops and their families back home, but they also give all Americans a reminder of the daily sacrifice out soldiers make. “It does not matter what party you belong to. These bands are to support those who fight for our country and say we are proud to be American,” says Lisa Jensen, who founded the effort with her husband Kib and their four children. Freedom Bands started as a family foundation based on the very successful Lance Armstrong “Live Strong” bands. The Jensens and their children knew the same concept would help them raise money for American forces. Starting with only 25,000 bands, orders have far exceeded that number and more shipments are arriving to cover the blossoming demand.

High schools, radio and television, as well as the troops themselves have generously bought and distributed the FreedomBands, leading to the $30,000 that has been raised and donated to charities and organizations devoted to helping soldiers and their families. FreedomBand donations have already been made to the American Red Cross, USA Cares, Armed Forces Children's Education Fund, the Fisher House Foundation and A Million Thanks.

Freedombands can be purchased at freedombands. com for $1 and come in packages of ten at the minimum. Larger purchases are welcome as well as donations. The bands are sold in adult and childrens sizes and come in Red, White, Blue, Swirl, Camouflage and glow-in-the-dark.

First Ever Piano Wizard Academy Created at Southern Illinois University School of Music Breaks the Mold for Piano Lessons Forever

First Ever Piano Wizard Academy Created at Southern Illinois University School of Music Breaks the Mold for Piano Lessons Forever

“Wow! I scored 98 Percent!” beamed an elated 6 year-old before turning back to the Piano Wizard video game screen to try for a perfect score.

Miami, FL (PRWEB) December 8, 2005

Piano Wizard™ is a revolutionary video game that teaches people of all ages to play the piano—quickly and easily. The game uses proprietary software along with a color-coded piano keyboard (bundled with the software) to allow anyone to hit the correct note at the correct time. The game lets students play actual songs and through game play, musical logic, theory and notation are subconsciously learned.

Piano Wizard has proved to be so effective at teaching people of all ages to play the piano, that SIU School of Music Professor Don Beattie and his wife, Delayna, launched the first Piano Wizard Academy at SIU in Carbondale, Illinois this year.

Professor Beattie became actively involved in Piano Wizard a year ago. He and Piano Wizard inventor Chris Salter, CEO of Piano Wizard’s parent company, Allegro Multimedia, have been long time friends, from the day Chris walked into Don’s first group piano class over 20 years ago. Though Chris had no musical background, he graduated with a degree in music from SIU, due largely to the groundbreaking teaching style and mentorship of Professor Beattie.

Professor Beattie first utilized Piano Wizard as a tool for his university level Group Piano courses (comprised of 110 college participants). He then enrolled university students to create two programs to teach children from SIU’s Child Development Center. Currently, about 20 children, each with a student mentor, are participating in the revolutionary piano class experience using Piano Wizard.

“It’s a wonderful and extraordinary game that will ultimately help a whole lot of young people,” Professor Beattie offered. “It’s a beautiful starting point that allows them to read a dozen pieces a day and helps them become literate readers of music while still having fun. Music is a language and Piano Wizard helps them increase their vocabulary.”

Delayna concurred. “The success of the program for teachers, college mentors, parents and children alike has been indisputable. One little statistic from it speaks volumes, compared to stereotypical or conventional piano lessons. Not one child, age 3 to 10, and not one college mentor, dropped out, over the 14-week voluntary program. On the contrary, these kids can’t wait to sign up for next semester.

Unlike conventional music teaching methods that emphasize learning music notation and theory first, Piano Wizard lets students play a song first and later brings musical theory into the teaching process. The game uses notes, initially disguised as brightly glowing colorful characters that move with delightfully engaging motion. Colorful turtles, spaceships, ladybugs, aliens and a host of other cute icons, chosen by the player, travel on a line toward a matching color-coded keyboard on the computer screen. The player then simply hits the same colored key on the computer screen when the traveling characters reach the keyboard on the screen. In the process, children as young as three can play music from Beethoven to the Beatles, from Mozart to Madonna and any other style of music in just minutes.

Piano Wizard offers an Easy Mode version that is intended for both beginning children and adults, as well as a Premier version that offers more challenging play and allows players to download an endless number of MIDI songs making Piano Wizard an ever-changing music game.

In addition to being adopted by the Southern Illinois University School of Music in conjunction with the SIU Child Development Center, Piano Wizard has been heartily endorsed by PBS’s Scott “The Piano Guy” Houston because of its revolutionary instructional method. Piano Wizard has also won the prestigious “Top Toy Of The Year Award” in the Creative Toy Awards 2005 by Creative Child magazine.

Salter concluded, “Don and I are firm believers that music is a birthright not reserved for the elite. It should be open to all, not just those who have access to classical education. Music is something joyful and joins people at a spiritual level. Allowing everyone to experience that joy is a beautiful thing.”
