Each year, Be The Change brings together some 500 change-makers from 20+ countries - business people and social entrepreneurs; people in health, education, communities; coaches and consultants; teachers and students. To call Be The Change a ‘conference’ would somehow miss the extraordinary vitality and range of the event.

Here are some of the stories that will be told.

Finance and the Earth: a look at the impact of the financial system on the planet. Led by Sir John Whitmore, international business coach and co-founder of Be The Change and by Bernard Lietaer, the man who designed the Euro, and who brings decades of experience of the money system to bear on his call for a new, intentional, economics

The Nature of Conflict and Healing – led by Scilla Elworthy, a hugely experienced peace builder and author of Make Terrorism History; plus a group of Israelis and Arabs, coming to London direct from a life-changing 30-day trip together across the Sahara; and Gill Hicks, who lost her legs in the July 7 London bombings.

Education for a Sustainable Future: A group of experts – led by America’s leading environmental academic, David Orr – explore a radical re-thinking of education for a sustainable future. David is calling it The End of Education, no less. Other speakers from across the globe include:

Tim Flannery: One of the world’s top climate change scientists – facing, as he ends his round-the-world book tour, unprecedented fame and respect for his call to action around the future of our planet.

John Duggan: An impressive example of corporate social responsibility: a British business leader who has decided that his company (a subsidiary of Wal*Mart), and not the customer, must and will start bearing the full environmental cost of everything it builds.

Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev: An Indian sage who not only challenges all the stereotypical views of a guru – he rides motorbikes and climbs mountains – he also challenges our ideas about creating change, teaching that inner peace is the foundation for global transformation.

Lindsay Levin: a UK business woman, once CEO of a major network of auto dealerships, now focused on engaging CEO’s in the realities of ngo’s and the developing world.

Stan Thekaekara: An inspirational man who has radically transformed the position of India’s poorest, the indigenous Indians –now a strong community, owning their means of production, and seeking to trade their tea directly with UK communities. Stan asks ‘What’s fair about fair trade?’

Zulfi Hussain: a group of young people visit us from Bradford, together with the British entrepreneur who has inspired and motivated them through a series of enterprise challenges.

World Café – intense discussions weaving the threads of each day, and guided by Tatiana Glad, John Whitmore and Lynne Franks (who will lead a special women’s circle on day 2).

Chloe Goodchild: On the Friday night, a unique concert by an acclaimed British voice teacher, now revealed as a passionate, inspiring force with her beautiful CD, Fierce Wisdom – plus Tim Hain and his blues/reggae band.

PeaceChild: On the final day, this international youth group will come to present a new challenge to all of us who think we can ‘Be The Change we want to see in the world.’

With More People Facing Obesity, More Professional Hypnotists Are Offering Tools to Help

With More People Facing Obesity, More Professional Hypnotists Are Offering Tools to Help

Hypnosis offers genuine help for people battling obesity. Many of the professional hypnotists who will attend the National Guild of Hypnotists Convention and Educational Conference this summer will be seeking certifications and re-certifications as they build their skills to help people deal with weight gain and other issues common in society today. NBC's Dateline focused on one man using the hypnosis weight loss techniques of NGH member and board certified hypnotist Tom Nicoli, and found them successful in helping him lose 40 pounds.

Merrimack, NH (PRWEB) May 14, 2007

Hypnosis, long practiced as an alternative approach to medical treatment, is today accepted by much of the mainstream medical community as a way to treat stress, manage pain and reduce undesirable habits and behaviors such as overeating or lack of motivation to exercise. This summer, many professional hypnotists will participate in The National Guild of Hypnotists (http://www. nghconvention. com/2007/05/02/many-attending-the-national-guild-of-hypnotists-convention-and-educational-conference-this-summer-will-be-earning-required-credits-toward-becoming-a-certified-hypnotist-others-will-earn-advanced-ce) Convention and Educational Conference for the purpose of advancing their skills and gaining new certifications or re-certifications.

Tom Nicoli is one of over 200 speakers who will conduct seminars and workshops at the twentieth annual National Guild of Hypnotists Convention and Educational Conference (http://www. nghconvention. com/2007/05/01/do-you-know-the-2007-convention-catalog-is-available-here-now/), on August 10, 11 and 12. Tom Nicoli, a longtime NGH member, is a board certified hypnotist, certified instructor, public speaker and published author. He is perhaps best known as the founder of World Hypnotism Day and as the hypnotist whose weight loss program was used in an NBC Dateline feature, titled The Ultimate Weight Loss Challenge, that followed six people trying to lose weight in preparation for their twenty-fifth high school reunion. All of the six used using different weight loss approaches, ranging from the Atkins diet to marathon training. Marc Merlis, a pastry chef, who used Tom Nicoli's weight loss (http://www. nghconvention. com/category/convention-presenters/) hypnosis CD's and hypnosis weight loss program, successfully lost 40 pounds during the target period. As Nicoli explains, "The problem isn't what we do, it's why we do it. Hypnosis is the natural, safe and expedient approach of getting to the why."

When Harvard Medical School hypnosis instructor Jean Fain critiqued and rated several weight loss programs for Shape Magazine, only National Guild of Hypnotists member Tom Nicoli's program ranked 5 of 5 stars. Professor Fain described Nicoli's program by saying, "Tom Nicoli has created a dramatic, affordable and effective weight-loss CD set."

None of the members of the National Guild of Hypnotists claims that the techniques of hypnosis will enable you to magically lose weight and the NGH cautions people to avoid anyone who makes such unrealistic claims. NGH president Dr. Dwight Damon says, "The National Guild of Hypnotists offers programs to prepare consulting hypnotists to better serve the types of problems people face today. The 280 workshops and seminars offered at this year's NGH Convention and Educational Conference cover a range of topics related to hypnotism and the medical and counseling professions that use hypnosis in their practice.

The NGH Convention is open to hypnotism professionals (http://www. nghconvention. com/category/first-the-ngh-many-firsts/) and anyone with a sincere interest in learning more about hypnosis or careers in hypnotism and related fields that utilize hypnotism. For more information on the National Guild of Hypnotists Convention and Educational Conference, contact the NGH Convention registrar at (603) 429-9438. For NGH Convention hotel reservations, attendees should contact (508) 460-0700. Additional information about hypnotism, careers in hypnotism, the NGH, the NGH Summer Institute or the 2007 NGH Convention is available at http://www. nghconvention. com (http://www. nghconvention. com).

The National Guild of Hypnotists, Inc. is a not-for-profit, educational corporation. Founded in Boston, MA in 1951, the Guild is a professional organization comprised of dedicated individuals committed to advancing the field of hypnotism. National Guild of Hypnotists president, Dr. Dwight F. Damon, is available for media interviews at (603) 429-9438.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Exhibition Pulls into Union Station

Tickets on sale now for Midwest premier this summer

Kansas City, Mo. (PRWEB) April 10, 2009

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Exhibition will open Memorial Day weekend at Union Station Kansas City. The Station becomes the third museum and first in the Midwest to host this exhibition. The Becker Group, Ltd., which recently combined operations with Exhibitgroup/Giltspur, produced the exhibition in partnership with Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media. Based on the blockbuster film series and C. S. Lewis' beloved fictional books, the 10,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art entertainment and educational experience offers visitors the opportunity to tour scenes from the famed literary world of Narnia. Through authentic costumes, props and set dressings from the magical Narnia films, visitors will enter a three dimensional world that combines the wonders of science with aspects of fantasy. Tickets are on sale now at unionstation. org.

"This exhibition is a truly captivating and entertaining experience for all ages," said Eddie Newquist, President of Branded Entertainment at Exhibitgroup/Giltspur. "From the scene displays and props seen in the Narnia films, to the scientific and educational aspects of the exhibition that stimulate the senses and the mind, guests will be transported into another world to experience Narnia like never before."

"It's going to be a magical summer at Union Station for kids and families," said George M. Guastello, II, president and CEO of Union Station Kansas City, Inc. "The Station is fortunate to be selected for the Midwest premier, and visitors can expect to find the Station transformed into the world of Narnia from the moment they step inside our doors."

Science City, Union Station's interactive science center, will offer special programming connected to the exhibit. And Union Station's resident children's theater company, Theater for Young America, will present live stage performances of "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe" on select dates this summer.

"This exhibition brings together all of the core elements of our mission," said Michael R. Haverty, chairman of Union Station's Board of Directors. "It educates visitors in science, history and the environment."

Visitors to the exhibition will view artifacts from C. S. Lewis' personal study and experience exciting environments such as the famous attic and wardrobe. Once inside Narnia, visitors will encounter falling snow and other interactive and instructive elements including:
A replica of the White Witch's Throne where visitors can sit on the icy throne and feel the chill. A nearby display describes the impact of climate change on our planet and investigates whether our planet could be frozen for 100 years, like the world of Narnia.

An area featuring King Miraz's Castle from The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian where visitors have the opportunity to build an arch, while learning about the architectural structure and strategy involved in the design.

An area highlighting the mythical creatures of Narnia, which allows visitors to create their own creatures featured in the film. Three stacks of rotating, square blocks stand in three-, four - and six-foot configurations, each level featuring different aspects of a creature. By rearranging the different levels, visitors can create well-known characters from the Narnia films or mix and match the squares to create new characters. Exhibit tickets are $7 for Union Station members and youth groups of 15 or more; $9 for children 3 to 12 and adult groups of 15 and more; and $14 for adults (13 and older). Swardlick Marketing GroupÂ’s Social Marketing Television Ads Selected for Act Responsible Worldwide Tour

Swardlick Marketing GroupÂ’s Social Marketing Television Ads Selected for Act Responsible Worldwide Tour

Obesity Crisis Ads Highlight the Health and Social Marketing Services From SwardlickÂ’s Food and Nutrition Specialized Practice

Portland, ME (PRWEB) December 6, 2004

Swardlick Marketing Group (www. swardlick. com), a full-service strategic marketing agency specializing in health and nutrition marketing services today announced that two television spots created by Swardlick were recently selected for inclusion in an exhibition of world-class social marketing campaigns. The television ads (http://www. swardlick. com/creative/cal_health_2.php), which focused on the obesity crisis, were developed on behalf of the California Nutrition Network and the Produce for Better Health Foundation/National 5 A Day Partnership. The ads were designed to raise awareness of the obesity crisis and to encourage people to consume a minimum of five servings of fruits and vegetables per day – in a way that takes healthy lifestyle messaging in a powerful and provocative new direction.

Swardlick Marketing Group's anti-obesity spots were among hundreds of selected print and television ads from 26 countries assembled by ACT – Advertising Community Together – to be part of a touring exhibit to demonstrate how creativity can be used to address today’s social issues. Venues for the show, entitled ACT Responsible: Ads that Made Us Change, include Miami, Cannes, Beijing, New York, Paris, London and Sao Paulo, with more planned for 2005.

"We were honored that the work of our health marketing services was selected to be part of this international exhibition," said David Swardlick, president, Swardlick Marketing Group. "The goal of our work for the California Nutrition Network and the Produce for Better Health Foundation/National 5 A Day Partnership was to elevate the discussion of obesity and healthy eating among consumers. This recognition confirms that our public health marketing work is as effective as we had hoped it would be in elevating and communicating these important messages."

You can see the ads at: www. swardlick. com/creative/cal_health_2.php (http://www. swardlick. com/creative/cal_health_2.php )

As Holiday Bills Pile Up

It happens every year about this time, the bills from all that Holiday spending start to come in, and so do the creditor phone calls. It happens every year about this time. The bills from all that Holiday spending start to come in, and so do the creditor phone calls. Millions of people have been through this before, and few of them know how to deal with it.

What many people don't know is that there's a book that's readily available that can help them get out of their tight financial situation.

The book, "B$ Your Creditors. . . so you can survive!" is filled with handy, easy-to-use forms and the Best Strategies (B$) for getting out of debt. This book is empowering because it shows people how to take control of their money and their life-in the privacy of their own home. This is the only book that walks people step-by-step through the budgeting process while teaching them how to talk their creditors into helping them out of debt instead of getting them further in the hole.

The Best Strategy (B$) series is a specialized series of books that inform and empower readers. From Hollywood script sales to talking to your creditors, these books can help secure a prosperous future by launching your career or helping you get out of debt and on the road to financial freedom.

What makes these books any different from the millions of other "how to" books? They are written by experienced professionals, who are sharing their personal experiences, tricks, and techniques for success.

The other unique aspect of the e-Book version of "B$ Your Creditors. . . so you can survive!" is that it's the first e-Book to be in full color with sound effects and music written especially for it. It is immediately downloadable & available in CD format. A 2 CD audio book version will be released in the near future.

Also currently featured is the annual "B$ EASY BUDGET BOOK" which helps readers track their income and expenses in an easy, fill-in-the-blanks budget book with calendars for each year and helpful notes specific to that year.

Those who have read the book have claimed that it really has taught them to take action and get over their financial woes. One woman from Santa Monica, California said, "This book has all of the nitty-gritty on handling creditors, all the details and the how-to, to help one understand what to do, and how to do it."

Also an educational tool for people who don't have financial problems, it gives real world advice on how to save money, by providing tips on how to tighten up your bills or how to become educated about your credit report. "Best Strategy for Your CreditorsÂ…so you can survive!" doesn't promise to be a quick fix, but it does promise to educate and enlighten anyone who wants to be more financially sound.

The Litvin Centers for Diabetes Implement Retasure for Retinal Risk Assessment

Digital Healthcare, a Wake Forest, NC company specializing in sight-saving retinal risk assessment, announced today that The Litvin Centers for Diabetes is implementing the Retasure solution to provide retinal imaging risk assessment. The Litvin Centers for Diabetes offer comprehensive diabetic care from their offices in Fort Lee and West Orange, New Jersey. The Centers are dedicated to helping diabetics manage their condition and offer such services as nutritional counseling and podiatry, as well as a variety of educational programs.

Wake Forest, NC (PRWEB) April 1, 2008

Digital Healthcare, a Wake Forest, NC company specializing in sight-saving retinal risk assessment, announced today that The Litvin Centers for Diabetes is implementing the Retasure solution to provide retinal imaging risk assessment.

The Litvin Centers for Diabetes offer comprehensive diabetic care from their offices in Fort Lee and West Orange, New Jersey. The Centers are dedicated to helping diabetics manage their condition and offer such services as nutritional counseling and podiatry, as well as a variety of educational programs.

"We are very excited about our new partnership with The Litvin Centers for Diabetes," said Scott Sanner, Senior Vice President, North American Operations of Digital Healthcare. "Dr. Litvin and his staff are already providing excellent programs for their patients, and adding Retasure further expands the comprehensiveness of their diabetic care programs."

"Diabetes is a complex disease with multiple complications and we believe treatment requires an intensively integrated approach and a great deal of education," said Yair Litvin M. D., founder of the Litvin Centers for Diabetes. "We can now better address the complication of diabetic retinopathy, which is a high-risk condition for diabetics and a leading cause of blindness. With Retasure we are increasing our ability to assess patients' total health."

The FDA-approved and HEDIS compliant Retasure program provides a simple, affordable, and non-invasive solution that allows physicians to capture their patients' retinal images during a three to five minute procedure without eye dilation. Images are transmitted over a secure, HIPAA compliant network to an accredited reading center. A state-licensed and board certified ophthalmologist reviews the images and results are returned to the original physician within 72 hours. The simplicity of the assessment process is unique in the market and addresses a previously un-met need for one of the nation's largest public health issues.

There are an estimated 21 million diabetic patients in the US, but only about half have any retinal assessments, despite a high risk of diabetic retinopathy. The National Eye Institute indicates diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness among working age American adults. More than a million patients worldwide have received a retinal risk assessment using Digital Healthcare software.

About Digital Healthcare
Digital Healthcare is the global leader in retinal risk assessment. They are the world's leading provider of care management programs for diabetic retinopathy. Their award-winning MS-HUG technology is used by
Leading hospitals and research centers including University Hospitals Case Medical Center at Case Western Reserve University, The Wilmer Eye Institute at The Johns Hopkins University and the United States Military. Digital Healthcare's Retasure solution offers several advantages for primary care and endocrinologist physicians and their patients: It can be operated by non-clinicians; it is non-invasive and requires no dilation; it obtains exceptionally high-quality digital images of the retina using a simple-to-operate fundus camera; it returns results quickly to the ordering physicians; and it encourages patient compliance for retinal evaluation and comprehensive eye examinations. Grill Your Best Summer with the Turkey Cannon

Grill Your Best Summer with the Turkey Cannon

A Utah manufacturing company takes patio grilling to new heights by infusing the flavor of your favorite wine, juice or beer deep into chicken and turkey for fantastic results. The cylinder-cooking method also decreases cooking time.

Logan, UT, (PRWEB) June 11, 2006

Fire up the grill and get ready to prepare a feast your family and friends are sure to remember with the Turkey Cannon from Camp Chef, a premiere outdoor cooking manufacturer based in Logan, Utah. The Turkey Cannon infuses moisture and flavor deep into your favorite poultry: chicken, turkey, goose or pheasant.

“We’ve been huge fans of beer can chicken for years,” said Brett Bennett, Camp Chef’s product engineer. “So we put our heads together to come up with a way to fit a beer can turkey into the grill. Most grills won’t let you stand a turkey upright over a can holder and close the lid.”

And, while the invention doesn’t actually sit the bird over the can of liquid, the results are just as impressive. First, pour the beer or wine into the cylinder of the Turkey Cannon. Then, place the poultry over the reclined cylinder. Moisture infuses deep into the breast of the bird, infusing flavor. The grill roasts the turkey from the outside.

“I love how well the Turkey Cannon roasts both chickens and turkeys,” said Chef Bryan Woolley, culinary director for the Love to Cook culinary education program. “The breast meat is so tender and moist – and the skin was so full of flavor from the grill.”

“While you certainly can grill a chicken on the Turkey Cannon, I recommend serving up turkey for any large parties,” Woolley said. “Turkey is a very healthy meat and it’s something everyone seems to love to eat off the Turkey Cannon.”

For more information and recipes for preparing juicy chicken on the grill, visit www. TurkeyCannon. com or call 1-800-650-2433. The Turkey Cannon is available at barbecue retailers, finer sporting goods stores and hardware retailers nationwide.

Lee & Low Books Launches New Homeschooling Mini-Site

Lee & Low Books Launches New Homeschooling Mini-Site

Lee & Low Books is proud to announce the launch of a new Web site section devoted to homeschoolers. Lee & Low's books offer the homeschool population stories that reflect many worldviews and thought-provoking perspectives on how people who may seem different on the outside share common dreams and goals. It is vital for children educated in homeschooling environments to be exposed to different cultures and to learn to accept people for who they are, despite cultural differences.

New York, NY (PRWEB) January 30, 2009

Lee & Low Books is proud to announce the launch of a new Web site section devoted to homeschoolers.

"As we developed the site, we took the time to talk to homeschoolers and to librarians who support the homeschool population," said Lee & Low publisher Jason Low. "We found that homeschooled children and their parents are constantly seeking out new books and materials for their educational needs, including ways to look at a single issue from many perspectives. We decided to proceed by developing a resource based on our unique focus on diversity."

Lee & Low's commitment to diversity dates back to the original mission of the company, which was founded in 1991.

The Lee & Low homeschooling section is located at leeandlow. com/p/homeschooling. mhtml and consists of original content specifically for individuals or small groups of children. The materials were developed by experts in the homeschool education field. An article by librarian Adrienne Furness, author of Helping Homeschoolers in the Library, offers tips for bringing diversity into the home with the award-winning Vanishing Cultures series, written and photographed by Jan Reynolds. The site also includes several activities developed by Anastasia Suen, prominent author and educator who started out teaching in the home and who continues to work extensively with homeschoolers through her various blogs.

Lee & Low also encourages homeschoolers to offer their own ideas and suggestions for additional materials that meet their needs. As the world becomes smaller, cultures will clash and misunderstandings will arise, but books can help plant the seeds for healthy dialogues to take place.

Web Store adds New Informational Skin Care Blog

Web Store adds New Informational Skin Care Blog

PerfectSkinCareShop. com launched in the fall of 2008 with the intent to bring high quality affordable skin care products out to people who suffer from problematic or aging skin. Recently, the site added a new educational blog to its many features.

Anderson, SC (PRWEB) May 15, 2009

When it comes to skin care, Marlena Burgiss is a fervent believer in taking care of one's self. A registered nurse and skincare specialist, Burgiss specializes in medical skin care and often helps people who suffer from several dermatological issues. For the everyday person, she started www. PerfectSkinCareShop. com in September 2008, a website that carries several helpful products that aid in having the perfect skin.

"I've been doing skin care for 15 years," said Burgiss. "I have a passion for it and I love being able to help people."

The products on Burgiss's site run the gamut and can help with acne, hyperpigmented, ging and dry skin care. There are also day-to-day items such as facial cleansers, moisturizers, and anti-aging serums available.

For a relatively new web store, Burgiss has an impressive selection of products and she continues to add more as she goes along.

"I just added the Condition Enhance System and the Clarisonic Skin brush," she said. "I'm always looking to keep the website as current as possible."

One new feature that will help Burgiss with this is her blog, www. SkinCareChatter. com.

The blog will be a portal in which Burgiss can answer inquiries about proper skin care routines and other bits of advice that will help people who have less-than-stellar skin.

"The focus of the blog is to help educate people on good skin care," said Burgiss. "We're providing answers and really utilizing the products for everything they're worth.

"We want to help people who want to improve their skin and become confident and satisfied with the way they look."

Education and University Space Must Lower Online Customer Acquisition Costs to Survive, Says Leadpile

Education and University Space Must Lower Online Customer Acquisition Costs to Survive, Says Leadpile

Competition in oversaturated online education and university space necessitates a new look at lead costs.

Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) April 2, 2006

According to Jupiter research, online search and display advertising will grow to $15 billion in 2010, and paid search advertising will be critical to this burgeoning growth. Rich media and streaming media will also see strong growth, generating almost $4.5 billion in 2010, as will classified advertising, which will bring in $4.1 billion. With this increase in online advertising will come some very important decisions for Education and University players to handle their online lead acquisition costs, says Leadpile. com

Leadpile says that online advertisers are primarily choosing Google and Yahoo! for their campaigns. As paid search continues its steady growth, and as commercial search traffic will cause cost-per-click (CPC) prices rise, Education and University players will quickly have to decide where they will place their online advertising dollars in order to further compete in the expanding online world. As online advertising continues to occupy a significant portion of the Education and University overall advertising budget, both online ad agencies and Education and University marketing executives will have to focus on what approach and creative strategies will best increase their return on investment (ROI), and lower their acquisition costs. Bottom line, Education and University players will have to pay much more attention to online lead generation and acquisition costs as online advertising gets more competitive each and every day.

Andrew Jacob, CEO of Leadpile. com says, “The online Education and University space will continue to get more and more competitive. Only those companies that can keep their acquisition costs low will bloom in the burgeoning online world. Today, Education and University players are not taking full advantage of the online opportunity, both nationally and locally. National and Local advertising has a long way to go in the online space, and only those Companies that find the most direct route to their target consumer will win.”

Leadpile offers the Education and University space the first ever, secure, online centralized location to engage in an efficient lead marketplace. The Leadpile marketplace allows the actual Originators of Leads, and the Education and University players themselves to decide what price they are each willing to sell, and buy, their leads at, and the way in which the lead delivery will take place. Andrew Jacob, CEO of Leadpile, says “The Internet Lead Space has been a bifurcated marketplace for too long. Our centralized marketplace, where Buyers and Sellers of Leads meet, is revolutionary, and will take the Online Lead Industry to the next level of efficiency by eliminating multiple layers of Lead Middleman who have driven the cost of Leads to Unprecedented Levels for Lead Buyers. “Our proprietary system allows Buyers and Sellers of leads to engage in the World’s largest and most efficient marketplace. Lead Buyers can now have access to the highest number of quality Lead Sellers in one simple to use location. Lead Sellers can have access to the world’s strongest Lead Buyers who will bid for their high quality leads. For the first time in E-commerce history, a Lead has finally been made into a commodity.” Jacob adds, “We are very pleased to offer an efficient, centralized alternative for Lead Buyers and Sellers to transact business in a more efficient marketplace, than say, a traditional, old-fashioned affiliate marketing program like Commission Junction.”

Leadpile. com is known as the business man’s “Holy Grail” for its online lead generation services. Leadpile is the leader in the Internet Lead Generation industry. And, with over 2.4 million leads produced and delivered, Leadpile is the World’s Largest Online Lead Marketplace. New Partnership Aims to Stop Phone Use While Driving and Save Lives

New Partnership Aims to Stop Phone Use While Driving and Save Lives

When a teenage driver gets behind the wheel, their chance of dying is five times greater than an adult driver. That's why Impact Teen Drivers and California Casualty Insurance, applauds Oprah for her efforts through her "No Phone Zone" campaign to increase awareness of the dangers of using cell phones and texting while driving.

Sacramento, CA (PRWEB) May 2, 2010

When a teenage driver gets behind the wheel, their chance of dying is five times greater than an adult driver. As the No. 1 killer of teens, car crashes are often the result of poor decision-making -- and driving distractions play a role in three out of four. That's why Impact Teen Drivers, a California-based nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives, applauds Oprah for her efforts through her "No Phone Zone" campaign to increase awareness of the dangers of using cell phones and texting while driving. To directly address teen behavior related to texting and cell phones, Impact Teen Drivers (http://www. impactteendrivers. org/) is partnering with OTTER LLC to offer its life-saving text-management app to teens and their parents and make it easy to silence cell phones while driving.

"The new OTTER (http://www. otterapp. com/) app is a tool that will enable teens and parents to easily put their phone into a mode that is safe while driving, without losing the connectivity that teens crave," said Dr. Kelly Browning, Executive Director of Impact Teen Drivers.

While activated in GPS or Parental Control Mode, OTTER will silence all incoming texting and phone call ringtones while the user is in a moving vehicle, plus initiate a response telling others they are driving. This eliminates the temptation for a teen to read or respond to a text or phone call while driving, therefore removing substantial risk of death or injury that is associated with those distractions.

Through conversations and extensive feedback from teens, Impact Teen Drivers identified the need to address texting and cell phone use while driving as a crucial element in the effort to reduce driving-related deaths and injuries.

George Bowen, Executive Vice President of California Causalty (http://www. calcas. com), one of the founding sponsors of Impact Teen Drivers, said, "California Casualty joins Impact in supporting the use of OTTER by teens... and will be working to make it available to California Casualty (http://www. calcas. com) customers in the weeks to come."

Impact Teen Drivers reaches teens, parents, and teachers through their interactive curriculum, which is offered free to high schools; online through their web portals impactteendrivers. org (http://www. impactteendrivers. org/), whatslethal. com, and createrealimpact. com; and with an extensive social media presence. Since its creation, Impact has been actively planning, developing, and delivering engaging and interactive awareness and educational materials that target teens and teach them about safe driving and the dangers of distracted and reckless driving. Since 2007, Impact has been implemented in California high schools with the support of California State Superintendent of Education Jack O'Connell, the California Teachers Association and the California PTA.

"It is imperative that we educate teens and empower them to promote the safe driving message in order to have a fundamental and sustained behavior shift. This isn't about bad kids doing bad things, but good kids making poor choices. One poor choice can alter or end their lives and the lives of those they care about," said Dr. Browning. "We recognize the importance to teens of immediate communication in today's social environment. We believe that OTTER is an affordable solution for all families and will meet teens' need for immediate communication and connectivity."

Working Mother Fights Terrorism

Working Mother Fights Terrorism

Working mother, Jean Evans, designed a grab ‘n go terror response kit, called EaglePax, based on the items recommended by the U. S. Department of Homeland Security. Evans contributes 10% of the profits from EaglePax to the American Red Cross.

St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) January 14, 2004

One mother does what she can to fight back against terrorism.

Working mother, Jean Evans, designed a grab ‘n go terror response kit, called EaglePax, based on the items recommended by the U. S. Department of Homeland Security. “I focused on the unique items that most people probably do not have on hand or that are not readily available, like Potassium Iodide to help fight radiation poisoning, particulate filtering masks and a manual can opener,” said Evans. “I certainly did not have these things lying around. Now I have them all in a grab ‘n go kit in a safe place in my home.”

“We live in a scary time and I do not want my daughter to live in fear” Evans said. Evans has a 9 year old daughter and she wanted to show her that families are not helpless. “I tell my daughter, ‘Don’t be scared be prepared’.”

Evans contributes 10% of the profits from EaglePax to the American Red Cross. “I feel good about supporting the American Red Cross, since our customers are able to participate in contributing to the readiness of others and the American Red Cross receives needed funds,” said Evans. “It’s a win for everyone.”

Evans launched her website www. eaglepax. us in November of 2003, and has been shipping kits around the country. Evans is also working with retailers to make the product available to more families.

“I hope that my efforts will assist others in being prepared and provide a way for parents to talk to their kids about being ready,” said Evans. The kits also contain instructions about keeping an extra supply of food and water, creating a communications plan, and knowing what to do in certain emergency situations. “Make a kit, make a plan, be informed, help others,” said Evans. “These are the four pillars of preparedness.”

Evans has been interviewed on radio shows in Texas, Indiana, Maine and Massachusetts. She has also been featured in publications in California and the St. Louis area. “I want to get the word out about being prepared,” said Evans. “My family is prepared, and with the support of the American Red Cross we are helping others, too. I feel good that my daughter sees that our family is doing something about terrorism.”

EaglePax, headquartered in St. Louis, MO., is a woman owned business dedicated to empowering the community to be prepared for a terrorist attack through education and their grab ‘n go kit called EaglePax. The self-contained and easy-to-store kit has items that are vital in the event of a terrorist attack or similar emergency. EaglePax is further dedicated to the community by giving 10% of its net profits to the American Red Cross. For more information, contact Jean Evans, CEO at 636-825-6469 or visit www. eaglepax. us.

The mission of the American Red Cross is to help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies and disasters. Each year, the St. Louis area chapter responds to nearly 1,000 local disasters, which includes family home fires and other emergencies. Making Math Real with Moody's Mega Math Challenge

Making Math Real with Moody's Mega Math Challenge

As America strives to become more competitive in the global economy, many schools across the U. S. are increasing their focus on math and science education and pushing for higher standards in science, technology, engineering, and math courses. Of equal importance, however, is the students’ ability to apply their knowledge to real-world issues: a skill that will eventually allow them to translate their education to successful careers in research and industry. That is the idea behind Moody’s Mega Math (M3) Challenge, an applied math modeling contest for high school juniors and seniors funded by The Moody's Foundation and organized by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM).

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) December 21, 2010

The realistic focus of the contest—which is different from what students routinely encounter in standard school curricula—spotlights math as a powerful problem solving tool and educates participants on its relevance to worldly issues. For instance, participating teams in past years have pondered the effectiveness of ethanol as biofuel and have proposed ideas to improve the U. S. Census count.

“Being involved in this project (the M3 Challenge), I saw how pertinent [math] is to the everyday life of the average American citizen,” said Scott Yu, whose team won the top prize in the 2010 Challenge. “Seeing the tremendous role statisticians and mathematicians can have on American society—that was tremendously valuable and important to me.”

The goal of the Challenge is to motivate students to study and pursue careers in applied mathematics, economics, finance, and related fields. Winners are judged based on their approach, methods, and creativity in problem solving and math modeling, and receive scholarships totaling $100,000 toward the pursuit of higher education.

The next Challenge is scheduled for March 5-6, 2011. Working in teams of three to five, students will have 14 hours to solve an open-ended, realistic problem with the help of any free, publicly available, and inanimate sources of information. Teams can select their preferred Challenge day to work: Saturday, March 5, or Sunday, March 6. The problem will be completely unknown to them until they log in on their selected day.

The contest also hones students’ skills in public speaking, as the top six teams are required to present their papers to a panel of professional PhD-level mathematicians at the final event at Moody’s Corporation headquarters in Manhattan. Student experiences often extend well beyond the Challenge, as past years have seen successful teams interviewed on cable news shows and winning papers published in peer-reviewed journals. The contest provides students with yet another real-world experience, which will no doubt prove useful to them throughout their professional careers: working together as a team on a complex project under a tight deadline.

Contests like Moody’s Mega Math Challenge, which introduce core subjects to students in novel ways, have become more relevant as they value unique approaches and creativity as much as technical accuracy. “Not all students want to learn math by cramming from a textbook or working endless formulaic expressions,” says M3 Challenge Project Director Michelle Montgomery. “Some learn better by using data to solve a complex problem. Others find more relevance to their mathematics education by recognizing its impact on other fields.”

There’s no better endeavor than Moody’s Mega Math Challenge to offer students that unique experience.

Dr. Alton C. Byers, Director of Research and Education at The Mountain Institute, received the prestigious David Brower Conservation Award from the American Alpine Club at its annual meetings in Attatash, New Hampshire on 10 February 2006. Washington, DC (PRWEB) February 18, 2006

Dr. Alton C. Byers, Director of Research and Education at The Mountain Institute, received the prestigious David Brower Conservation Award from the American Alpine Club at its annual meetings in Attatash, New Hampshire on 10 February 2006. The award was created in 1991 to emphasize The American Alpine Club's commitment to preserving mountain regions worldwide, and is given annually to “a person who has made important contributions to the protection of mountain environments and whose active personal role deserves public recognition”.

David Brower (1912 - 2000) was an active alpinist and member of the famed 10th Mountain Division with over seventy first ascents of mountains in the American west. He was a pioneer in the environmental movement in the U. S. and abroad, and was twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in conservation.

Byers is a mountain geographer who has worked for more than 30 years to protect mountain ecosystems and improve the livelihoods of mountain people in the U. S., China, Nepal, India, Mongolia, Africa, South America, and the Caribbean. His current interests include the conservation of the world’s alpine ecosystems by mobilizing local communities; impacts of climate change and glacier recession on people’s lives and livelihoods in high mountain regions; and co-editing a new mountain geography textbook. He lives with his wife, Elizabeth, an ecologist at the Division of Natural Resources; and 17-year old daughter, Barbara Lee, in Elkins, West Virginia. His son, Daniel, is a sophomore at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

Speaking on Byers’ work in the Everest region of Nepal, Peter Ackroyd, Chairman of the American Alpine Club’s International Conservation Committee, said that "From my involvement with Alton on the Mount Everest Alpine Conservation and Restoration project I can say that he is passionately concerned with using his knowledge and skills to protect and restore mountain environments. He also strongly believes that the education, involvement, and commitment of the local population is key for the success of any project, and the Khumbu Alpine Conservation Council [a 23-member managing council of local Sherpa people established in 2003) is a testament to his ability to inspire a community to take control. He is constantly looking for new opportunities to improve the habitat and lot of the mountains and the people we all so enjoy and I think we will see many more excellent projects from him in the future. It has been a pleasure and education to work with him."

The Mountain Institute is an international conservation and community development organization headquartered in Washington, DC with offices in Elkins, West Virginia; Nepal, China, and Peru.
