Practicing School Counselor Shares Her Time and Energy in Publishing a New Curriculum for Character Education and Values Lessons

The founder and President of Counseling Today, Inc. along with the publisher, Outskirts Press, Inc. reveals a new Character Education Curriculum. Divided into monthly character traits, this new program will be an invaluable asset to the dynamics of building a school culture.

Louisville, KY (PRWEB) March 8, 2006

Building a Champion Character will benefit your school, your staff and your students.

•Teaches tolerance, courtesy, and respect of Others.

•Increases Teaching Time.

•Reduces Disruptive Behavior.

•Saves money – Student worksheets included. No training required.

•Easy to implement.

•Improves Peer Relationships through Interactive Activities.

•Combines Character Development Efforts of Home, School, and Community.

•Promotes Care of Community/School Property and Improves School Climate.

This program is a systematic approach to building character, citizenship, values, and regard for self and others. The program is simple to administer, effective, and proven.

Building a Champion Character was developed as a work in process as it was taught throughout the year. The activities are the final lessons that were presented with adaptations that were found necessary along the way through the teacher’s and counselor’s experiences in the original year as well as input from the readers and users of the materials in subsequent years. Also included are letters for each month to go along with the lessons. As is already known and accepted, parents love communication. So, the letter could come from the counselor as the “director” of the program even though the teachers are actually carrying out most of the lessons.

The author, Susan Rose, lives with her husband, son and daughter in Louisville, Kentucky. She received both her Bachelors degree in Education and her Masters degree in Counseling Pyschology from the University of Louisville. She is currently counseling within the Jefferson County Public School system and working toward her doctorate in Counselor Education.

This program will save you valuable time to be with your students! Best wishes for a great Character Developing Year.

Silicon Valley's First Association of Consultants Celebrates 30 Years

Silicon Valley's First Association of Consultants Celebrates 30 Years

This release tells the story of how instrumental PATCA has been in changing the face of independent consulting in Silicon Valley over the past three decades. PATCA, the first Silicon Valley professional association of independent consultants, which led the evolution of the expert consulting career model, is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

San Jose, CA (PRWEB) October 14, 2005

Back in the days when professional consultants were mostly lawyers, doctors, and accountants, a group of Silicon Valley engineers joined together to form the first organization in the Bay Area that included independent consulting technologists, as well as traditional business experts. Ever since then, PATCA, now 30 years old, has been a driving force in the evolution of the expert consulting career model.

"Our earliest members were the new cowboys -- reluctantly used to being lone wolves," said Jim Lansing, management consultant and current President of PATCA. "In 1975, the unemployment rate was 8.5%, and for many of us, our first clients were the companies that had just laid us off. Companies were accustomed to working with full-time employees; and hiring managers, especially in the technology industry, had no experience working with expert consultants."

PATCA defined standards for ethical consulting practices, and helped its members to establish businesses and build their client base. Dennis Paull is one of the founding members of the organization, and served as its first President. "We started with a small core group and instantly expanded to 120 members. Some of us were looking for full time jobs; however many of us decided to pursue independent consulting. None of us knew how to market ourselves as consultants, so we published a directory of all of our members so companies would know how to contact us."

Ken Dinwiddie, a member since 1982 recalls, "I'm a software engineer, but when I first walked into PATCA as a new consultant, I had a lot of anxiety and concerns about making a go of it. I found a room full of people who were just like me, but who had been doing this for a long time, and they were willing to communicate their experiences. I felt like I was home, and made consulting my lifelong career."

According to Carl Angotti, an active PATCA member since its first year, "We were one of the first organizations to use technology to share business leads. It used to take a week for a client to obtain a referral to an expert, but we quickly learned to streamline the process by allowing all members to listen to leads left on a central PATCA telephone answering machine. This often gave us first crack at a project, and it helped us win accounts." Today PATCA’s online member database and online Post a Project referral service provide the same rapid service to connect clients with qualified consultants.

Angotti is also a member of IEEE-CNSV (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), the Silicon Valley chapter of one of the largest and most active professional associations for engineers. "PATCA is different, even today," he said. "PATCA gives me exposure to a wider range of experts in all facets of business, and opens up new marketing networks for my technology practice."

Fremont attorney Judy Player is one of those experts, who just joined the group two years ago after delivering a PATCA workshop and finding tremendous networking value. "Several PATCA members have become my clients, and companies have found me through my listing in the online member database."

PATCA is celebrating its 30th Anniversary with a client appreciation mixer on November 3, 2005 at 6:00 p. m., which is sponsored in part by Best Buy for Business and the ICCA (Independent Computer Consultants Association). The event, at Michaels at Shoreline in Mountain View, promises to be a fun-filled evening featuring live music by Los High Tops, wine tasting, hors d'oeuvres, door prizes, tea tasting, and chair massages. James Stout from Best Buy will be on hand to introduce the hottest consumer electronics of 2005. Tickets are $10 in advance (http://www. patca. org (http://www. patca. org)), or $15 at the door. The event is open to the public.

About PATCA

PATCA is a nonprofit professional association of independent consultants and principals who work in small consulting practices. Since its founding in 1975, PATCA members have been highly respected for their professionalism, integrity, objectivity and competence. They include experts in all aspects of business and technology, and serve clients in many industries, throughout the U. S. and the world. PATCA offers a free "Post a Project" referral service at http://www. patca. org (http://www. patca. org) for clients searching for an expert consultant, and provides leads, referrals, and consulting education to its consultant members, including monthly meetings in Santa Clara, California.

Community and Social Media Salaries Remain Relatively Steady Despite Economic Downturn

Community and Social Media Salaries Remain Relatively Steady Despite Economic Downturn

Forum One Networks' second annual Online Community and Social Media Compensation Study delivers important data points to help set benchmarks and build standards for community and social media roles, responsibilities, and compensation.

San Jose, CA (PRWEB) November 10, 2009

Forum One Networks’ second annual Online Community and Social Media Compensation (http://store. yahoo. com/cgi-bin/clink? yhst-83793679721952+uCGBcg+index. html+) study indicates that only 17% of the respondents’ salaries have decreased in 2009, while 43% had a salary increase and 40% had no change in their salaries. Additionally, job satisfaction among respondents was still fairly high at 4.1 out of 5 and only slightly lower than the 4.2 reported in 2008’s study.

The study included 370 participants comprised of 52% female and 48% male respondents who work in social media and online community. Unfortunately, the gap between the average male and female salaries widened from last year, with male respondents averaging $86.5k in 2009, up from $85.5k in 2008, and females averaging $75.5k annually in 2009, down from $77k in 2008.

“It’s discouraging to see the reported disparity in male and female salaries and even more of a concern that the salary gap widened in 2009. However, we were very pleased to see that despite a very difficulty economy, most respondents were earning the same or more than they were last year.” says Bill Johnston, Chief Community Officer at Forum One Networks.

“One key challenge with online community and social media salaries is that the industry continues to suffer from a lack of benchmarks and standards for compensation, coupled with clearly defined roles and responsibilities,” says Johnston. “The goal of these reports is to establish much-needed benchmarks and standards so that organizations may understand fair compensation for the community and social media roles.”

One respondent shares an opinion of how many companies are unclear of the value of community and social media roles, “Unfortunately I feel that most companies are still unable to fully grasp the importance of a dedicated social media team. They do not see a direct correlation between social media and ROI, and therefore are hesitant to put as many resources (both people and money) into social media as is typically necessary.”

The complete Online Community and Social Media Compensation 2009 (http://store. yahoo. com/cgi-bin/clink? yhst-83793679721952+uCGBcg+index. html+) report is available for purchase or included in membership to the Online Community Research Network (http://ocrnmembership-comp2009pr. eventbrite. com), a members-only professional network for community and social media practitioners. The report includes detailed data and analysis on respondent, age, gender, geographic location, organization and department size, location and size of community team, years of experience, education, average number of hours worked per week, compensation structure, benefits, salary, salary increase, job satisfaction and additional advice from respondents.

Washington, DC (Vocus) October 15, 2010

A diverse collection of federal, state and local officials will join environmental, health and industry representatives on October 19 and 20 during the “Clean Diesel 10 Conference” at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D. C.

This two-day event will include presentations and exhibits by top EPA, environmental and health officials, and industry groups on the significant progress the United States has made in the past 10 years to improve air quality through new clean diesel technology – and the goals for the future.

A copy of the Clean Diesel 10 agenda can be obtained here. The agenda is also listed below. The Clean Diesel 10 website can be accessed here.
The media is welcome to attend all sessions of the two-day program.

Introduction to Clean Diesel 10 Conference
Reducing emissions from diesel engines is one of the most important public health challenges facing the country. Despite U. S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) stringent heavy-duty highway and nonroad engine standards, millions of diesel engines already in use will continue to emit large amounts of nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter – both of which contribute to serious public health problems.

Transportation is also the fastest growing source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. Building on the success of the regulatory and voluntary efforts to reduce emissions from diesel engines, EPA created the National Clean Diesel Campaign (NCDC) and a network of Regional Collaboratives. The campaign provided the opportunity for EPA to work with communities; businesses; government, environmental, and community organizations; and industry to reduce air pollution emitted from diesel engines across the country through the implementation of varied control strategies and the sustained involvement of national, state, and local partners.

The Clean Diesel 10 Conference celebrates the accomplishments of the past decade and sets in motion the plans for the future.

Short Sales A-Z™ Online: Learn the Art of Pre-Foreclosure Deal-Making from ShortSales. com

Short Sales A-Z™ Online: Learn the Art of Pre-Foreclosure Deal-Making from ShortSales. com

Foreclosures are reaching record highs. The housing market is continuing to sink no end in sight. Pre-foreclosure sales offer a way out for both burdened creditors and over-mortgaged homeowners. And profits for savvy investors. With Oscar Morante's new online short sales course, you can learn from an expert how to make a good profit by acquiring pre-foreclosure properties through short sales.

Portland, OR (PRWEB) February 13, 2008

Foreclosure signs are everywhere you turn. With the housing marketing sinking, and some experts saying it will get worse before it gets better, many home and property owners are over mortgaged and cash poor. They are facing a chilling situation. They have little hope of keeping their property or selling it for what they had thought it would be worth by now back when the market was soaring.

"As the buyer who comes to the rescue, a savvy investor or agent is able to acquire property at below market value," says Oscar Morante (http://www. bestshortsales. com/about/about. html), the author and presenter of ShortSales A-Z™ Online (http://www. bestshortsales. com/events/shortSalesA-Z. php) course. "You can buy and/or list pre-foreclosure properties for well below market and sell at a profit even in a down market," says Morante, a recognized expert in preventing foreclosures and acquiring pre-foreclosure properties who has been teaching seminars nationwide on the topic.

More and more quality homes and commercial properties are being sold -- or soon will be -- for less than their market value. The buyer offers owners of distressed property a way out. Being "upside down" with a home is far more financially unsettling than owing more on a car than it's worth. And the pressure to sell and recoup all or part of the equity is far greater.

Pre-foreclosure buyers can make good money by helping sellers, lenders, and themselves.

The ShortSales A-Z™ Online course (http://www. bestshortsales. com/events/shortSalesA-Z. php) teaches students how to make a fair profit in an entirely ethical way. Students learn everything necessary to become a winner in the world of real estate investing for a small investment of time and money.

Oscar Morante can teach anyone how to recognize the right deals and how to make them at the right time. The course material is presented in an easy-to-understand format with graphical representations of the sometimes difficult concepts that makes them clear and direct. He shows online short sales students how to help others without inheriting their financial problems. When they apply Oscar's techniques, they can help property owners whom otherwise would face foreclosure, bankruptcy, and complete financial ruin. Once armed with the proper knowledge, graduates of ShortSales A-Z Online (http://www. bestshortsales. com/events/shortSalesA-Z. php) course will be able to make a profit ethically and truly help homeowners who would otherwise lose everything.

Morante created the tutorial to teach real estate and legal professionals, as well as private investors, how to increase their knowledge of the pre-foreclosure sales process and find a method for building wealth through leveraging available properties for short term gain.

Property owners who find themselves in financial trouble and can no longer keep up with escalating payments, are also looking for ways to cut their losses and survive with at least something to show for their investments in a home or commercial property.

The second and third mortgage holders are at greater risk when a property goes into foreclosure. They often get nothing after a property is sold on the auction block for less than market value at the discretion of the first mortgage holder.

Short Sales A-Z™ Online (http://www. bestshortsales. com/events/shortSalesA-Z. php) teaches participants how to recognize the best deals that are available in the current market and how to create a win-win situation for both lenders and sellers.

By downloading the ShortSales online course, buyers will receive:
Immediate access to all 26 chapters of Oscar's Highly sought after Short Sales A-Z™ Seminar  The opportunity to directly email Oscar for a personal email response to Short Sales A-Z™ class questions  26 workbooks included in the download  Real life examples of actual short sales  Strategies for EXECUTING successful short sales

The cost of the course is reasonable, regularly $300, it is currently available for downloading at a special introductory rate of $150. The seminar is especially popular with real estate brokers who find it identifies opportunities to earn commissions from transactions that would not be possible without short sales.

The online course is particularly suitable for people who are just becoming interested in real estate investing. "We review the basics in thorough and easy to learn way," says Morante. "I teach people how to get an appropriate return for rendering a valuable service."

Who Says Childbirth Needs to be Painful?

Who Says Childbirth Needs to be Painful?

Secrets of having a great birth are uncovered in this newly released book. 48 moms share their stories and wisdom through their own inspirational birth stories.

(PRWEB) November 20, 2004

Studies show that nine out of ten first-time mothers are afraid of giving birth and worried about the pain. But it doesnÂ’t have to be that way.

Childbirth educator Sheri Menelli has discovered that hearing childbirth “horror stories” can have a profoundly negative effect on pregnant women’s birth experiences. When fear and anxiety about childbirth are passed from woman to woman, these intense emotions create additional stress for the mother and baby. Doctors call this the “Fear/Tension/Pain” cycle.

Menelli set out to collect inspiring stories of successful labor and delivery experiences to help calm women’s fears. “With so much negative media about birth, it is time to bring back positive stories,” Menelli said. “The culture of fear surrounding childbirth in the U. S. is shifting, and women are eager to share their wonderful birth experiences.”

MenelliÂ’s just-published book, Journey into Motherhood: Inspirational Stories of Natural Birth (White Heart Publishing, November 2004), offers a collection of 48 true stories of natural birth, told in the mothersÂ’ own voices. As diverse as the women who wrote them, the stories include hospital births, home births, unassisted births, emergency deliveries, births attended by young siblings, outdoor births and more.

These stories describe the strategies and tools that can make birth a much better experience. Journey into Motherhood is filled with proven techniques to help women have a powerful and positive childbirth, including:

• How women can experience painless labor

• Insights and advice from mothers who’ve been there

• Options for easing labor and delivery—including yoga, doulas, hypnosis and water birth

• A resource guide to childbirth classes, magazines, websites and audios/videos

“What a fabulous book. All women and girls need to hear these stories and know, really know, that natural birth is full of magnificent, life-changing wisdom,” said Christiane Northrup, M. D., author of "Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom" and "The Wisdom of Menopause."

Sheri Menelli has dedicated her career to the education and empowerment of pregnant women. As a certified HypnoBirthing educator, she taught hundreds of couples how to have an easier, more comfortable birth. Sheri previously produced and co-hosted a San Diego radio show, "The Real Side of Birth.” She also authored and produced two guided meditation CDs: Light Meditation and Breastfeeding Meditation. A San Diego County resident, Sheri has one daughter and is expecting twins.

Students Improve Writing, Reading Skills With Pearson's WriteToLearn Supported by SpeechStream From Texthelp

Students Improve Writing, Reading Skills With Pearson's WriteToLearn Supported by SpeechStream From Texthelp

Research Demonstrates Students Build Writing Skills Using Online Reading and Language Tools

Woburn, MA and Boulder, CO (PRWEB) August 19, 2009

Pearson's award-winning Web-based learning tool, WriteToLearn™ (http://www. writetoLearn. net), featuring Texthelp System's embedded reading support technology, SpeechStream, is enabling students around the country to personalize their online learning environment and improve their reading comprehension and overall writing skills.

With WriteToLearn, students practice essay writing and summarization skills, and their efforts are measured by Pearson's state-of-the-art Knowledge Analysis Technologies™ (KAT) engine. The KAT engine is a unique, automated assessment technology that evaluates the meaning of text by examining whole passages, not just grammatical correctness or spelling. WriteToLearn provides feedback on six traits of writing - ideas, organization, conventions, sentence fluency, word choice and voice - and allows students and teachers to focus on each of these important dimensions of writing.

Using SpeechStream's text-to-speech capabilities (http://www. texthelp. com), WriteToLearn meets a wide variety of learner needs for a diverse group of students, including support for programs for Title I, Response to Intervention, learning disabled, English language learners and at-risk learners. With SpeechStream, students can have online content read aloud with highlighting. The dictionary and spot word translation ability in WriteToLearn 5.0 enables students to instantly retrieve the dictionary definition or Spanish translation of words in a reading passage.

"Today's schools are under pressure to improve the quality of student writing to meet important assessment goals as well as 21st-century guidelines for success in the workplace," said Mark McCusker, CEO, Texthelp Systems Inc. "Texthelp provides a customizable set of literacy and language support tools with Web 2.0 capability that mirrors the personalized coaching teachers provide to students in a one-to-one learning environment."

Research shows that students can improve their writing ability through the use of online reading and language support tools. Text-to-speech with synchronous highlighting has been shown to elevate reading levels by two years and to improve reading comprehension by up to 40 percent for struggling readers. In addition, a recent study by Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Wash., shows that students using these language support tools write nearly twice as much as students without the tools and demonstrate significant improvements in composition and organization.

Using Texthelp accessibility software embedded in WriteToLearn, students with learning disabilities have ready access to text-to-speech output and phonetically mapped writing support tools. "Some of my students will stumble over larger vocabulary words," said Debbie Craven, special education teacher at Troutman Middle School in Troutman, N. C. With the text-to-speech output from WriteToLearn, they can put on their headsets and click on the words to hear them read aloud. "They appreciate having the resource at their fingertips, rather than having to ask for help in pronouncing and defining words," she explained.

In addition, English language learners find text-to-speech output beneficial, she said. "I have a Spanish-speaking student who listened to the text in a WriteToLearn summarizing exercise in English so he could better understand what he was reading. It's a great tool."

"Educators today are faced with the challenge of helping students with a wide variety of abilities and backgrounds develop the strong writing and reading comprehension skills that they will need to be successful in school, higher education and in life," said Lynn Streeter, president of the Knowledge Technologies group of Pearson, developer of WriteToLearn. "Through our collaboration with Texthelp, WriteToLearn helps schools reach their diverse student populations with a powerful tool for developing a clear understanding of language, learning how to comprehend the meaning of words and building strong communication skills."

Advancements in Products and Services Promote “No Limits” To People with Disabilities at the Abilities Expo Metro NY

Brunswick Mobility and WINFUEL® combined forces to reinforce the power of the mind at this year’s Abilities Expo Metro NY. Cedar Knolls, NJ (PRWEB) April 18, 2005

Brunswick Mobility and WINFUEL® combined forces to reinforce the power of the mind at this year’s Abilities Expo Metro NY. Hosted by the New Jersey Convention and Expo Center, the event brought patrons, caregivers, healthcare and education professionals some of the latest products and services on the market designed to enhance the lives of people who live with disabilities.

“Our goal was to inspire our audience to believe that there are no limits to what they can achieve, regardless of their disabilities,” shares Cindy Mesko, Marketing Specialist at Brunswick Mobility, a division of Brunswick Automotive Professionals.

State of the art technology and services allow people with disabilities to do things that were inconceivable years ago.

In addition to the usual product and service displays, Brunswick Mobility’s booth offered a few special attractions for race enthusiasts such as a drawing for a NASCAR® race vacation package and display of the #32 WINFUEL/TRIMSPA® Chevrolet® NASCAR show car.

“The race car ties in perfectly to our theme’s message,” adds Mesko.

The race car conveys a powerful and optimistic attitude, the idea of winning both on and off the track.

“We were excited when the invitation came to us to have our NASCAR show car present at the expo. We’re both in the same line of work, improving the lives of others. This event was a perfect fit,” says Alex Goen, CEO and Founder of WINFUEL, Inc.

The two companies possess a common denominator to their joint venture - worldwide leader in mobility products, Braun Corporation. Brunswick Mobility is an authorized New Jersey dealer of Braun mobility products and WINFUEL is a key sponsor in the NASCAR racing circuit through Braun Racing (a sister company to Braun Corporation). It became obvious when the companies were introduced to join efforts to promote the booth’s “No Limit” theme.

Upcoming Abilities Expos for 2005 include Southern California (June 3-5), Metro Detroit(August 26-28), Chicago Metro (September 16-18), Northern California (November 18-20) and Texas (December 9-11).

Adopting Life: Nursing Graduate to Continue Legacy of Saving Infants

Adopting Life: Nursing Graduate to Continue Legacy of Saving Infants

After sharing his home and his parents with over 200 infants throughout the course of his childhood and teenage life, Chidi Anyanwu plans to carry on his parents' legacy of saving infants and meeting the needs of Africa's Eziama community.

Langley, B. C. (PRWEB) July 8, 2005

With a freshly minted nursing degree from Trinity Western University, Chidi Anyanwu, 32, is preparing to return to his Nigerian hometown to help run Grace Hospital, a rural health facility that opened in May 2005. Established by Chidi’s parents, the hospital is just one of four organizations they’ve begun since moving from Vancouver to Africa 27 years ago. The creation of these organizations—The Eziama Motherlesss Babies Home, King’s Kids Elementary School, Elijah Memorial Skills Acquisition Center and Grace Hospital—was set in motion by one tiny baby only weeks after their arrival. And the ramifications of this event set the course for Chidi’s life.

Chidi’s parents returned to the Eziama community—a grouping of 80,000 people in 23 villages in rural Africa—after attending Bible school in Canada, intending to plant churches. Up until that point, the community—Chidi’s dad’s hometown—had been torn apart by war, superstition, poverty and a lack of health services and education.

“They began the normal missionary process, but two weeks after we arrived in Eziama, a woman died giving birth, one village over,” says Chidi. “In those days the custom was to leave the baby to die because it was deemed responsible for the mother’s death. And according to superstition, harm would come to anyone who cared for the baby.”

After hearing about this baby, ChidiÂ’s mom went to the village, took the baby home, and cared for it.

“Word spread about what my mom had done. The villagers and everyone around expected something evil to happen to her,” explains Chidi. “As time went on and nothing happened, word spread that there was this lady taking care of babies. Soon after, another lady died, this time giving birth to twins, and they were brought to our home so we took care of them. Within six months we had 24 babies in our house.”

Today, twenty-five years later, the Eziama Motherless Babies Home is established and effectively provides care for infants in need. Home-staff care for the infants until they are 18 months old and can either be adopted or returned to their families. Since arriving in Nigeria, the family has rescued over 200 babies, and succeeded in breaking the superstition that these children bring a curse. Being a part of this revolutionary work inspired Chidi to pursue a career that would allow him to bring tangible help to the Eziama community and carry on what his parents had begun.

“Nursing is a caring profession,” explains Chidi, who is currently working at Peace Arch Hospital in Surrey, gaining experience before he returns to Africa. “It’s not about diagnosing and singling out a certain ailment, it’s about seeing the individual as a whole. Nursing allows me to encompass everything I’ve seen in African societies particularly in dealing with motherless babies. When you deal with babies, you’re not just dealing with their needs, but you’re also dealing with the extended family. It’s really about community education.”

“Chidi knew from day one that he’d be going back to Africa to serve the hurting people of his community,” says Catherine Ho Harwood, M. Sc., RN, TWU nursing professor. “However he didn’t talk about his parent’s mission or his own background until the spring of his second year when I happened to get him talking in the hall one day. I had him share his amazing story with his classmates, and they were as dumbfounded as I had been. His selfless heart and burning passion for the oppressed is humbling.” One Trinity Western University business student, Marilyn Ens, was so inspired that a year ago she moved to the Eziama to work as an accounted for the Hospital.

Motherless babies aren’t the only group in Eziama affected by the Anyanwu family. In 1991, an elementary school was established to provide accessible education for underprivileged children. Now enrolling over 500 kids, the school is expanding to a high school. They have also planted ten churches and opened a skills acquisition centre for poor uneducated girls, who are often the most vulnerable people in African societies. “Education is an exit to poverty,” says Chidi.

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) May 4, 2005

Bottled Water Containers Now the Single Most Recycled Item in Curbside Programs

Bottled Water Containers Now the Single Most Recycled Item in Curbside Programs

Bottled Water Container Recycling Rates Improved by 16%

Alexandria, VA (Vocus) February 19, 2009

The national recycling rate for PET plastic bottled water containers (.5 liter or 16.9 ounce size) has improved by 16.42%, according to new data from two new studies: ''2008 Post Consumer PET Bottle Bale Composition Analysis'' and ''2007 Report on PET Water Bottle Recycling,'' both produced by the National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR). According to data from an earlier 2006 bale content study for all beverages, the number of PET bottles counted per pound was approximately 12. In 2008, the total number of PET bottles increased to 13.78, a reflection of the dramatic increase in water bottle collection, as well as the continued lightweighting of other plastic containers. The 2007 NAPCOR study on water bottle recycling has determined that the recycling rate for water bottles is 23.4%, representing a significant 16.42% increase over the 2006 recycling rate of 20.1%.

With data compiled during an extensive bale composition study in 15 locations in 14 states, the 2008 NAPCOR PET analysis states: "Water bottles are now the most recycled container in curbside programs by weight, and overwhelmingly by number." PET water bottles now account for 50% of all the PET bottles and containers collected by curbside recycling. This trend was consistent in all curbside bales sampled nationally, with no major shifts observed in any other plastic container category. The biggest jump in water bottle collection for recycling was in California, where a state-funded consumer education campaign, emphasizing that water bottles are recyclable, seems to be having the desired effect.

Average Gram Weight per Bottle Declined by 26.7% Over Past Seven Years

In tandem with the new NAPCOR data, IBWA tracked the average amount of plastic used in.5 liter (16.9 ounce) PET bottles, using published data from the Beverage Marketing Corporation (BMC) to determine the lightweighting trend currently being seen in many brands of bottled water. In the year 2000, the average weight of a plastic water bottle was 18.90 grams. It has declined consistently on an annual basis and by 2007, the last year BMC has complete data (as of this date), the average weight of a PET water bottle was 13.83 grams - a 26.7% decline.

"Recycling rates continue to rise while bottle weight tumbles downward," said Joe Doss, President and CEO of the International Bottled Water Association. "But this improvement, while encouraging, reminds us that more needs to be done. It is very clear that the bottled water industry is swiftly headed in the right direction while delivering the convenience, safety and refreshing hydration that made bottled water so popular in the first place."

The International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) is the authoritative source of information about all types of bottled waters. Founded in 1958, IBWA's membership includes U. S. and international bottlers, distributors and suppliers. IBWA is committed to working with the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates bottled water as a packaged food product, and state governments to set stringent standards for safe, high quality bottled water products. In addition to FDA and state regulations, the Association requires member bottlers to adhere to the IBWA Bottled Water Code of Practice, which mandates additional standards and practices that in some cases are more stringent than federal and state regulations. A key feature of the IBWA Bottled Water Code of Practice is an annual, unannounced plant inspection by an independent, third party organization. Consumers can contact IBWA at 1-800-WATER-11 or log onto IBWA's web site (www. bottledwater. org]) for more information about bottled water and a list of members' brands. Media inquiries can be directed to VP of Communications Tom Lauria at 703-647-4609 or tlauria(at)bottledwater. org.
