Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center Speakers Bureau Members Recount Holocaust Experiences

Two members of the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center's (HHREC) Speakers Bureau recently shared their experiences of the Holocaust with high school students from seven states in the U. S. as well as students from Alberta, Canada.

Purchase, NY (PRWEB) December 8, 2008

Two members of the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center's (HHREC) Speakers Bureau recently shared their experiences of the Holocaust with high school students from seven states in the U. S. as well as students from Alberta, Canada.

As part of their human rights curricula, students at Eastchester High School and schools in Texas, Virginia, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Georgia, New Jersey and South Carolina, heard first-hand experiences of the Holocaust by participating in a unique, international video conference, which took place at Eastchester High School. The speakers shared their perspectives on the Holocaust and its relationship to the human spirit and human rights issues today. After their presentations, they fielded questions from conference participants.

Sel Hubert, an HHREC Speaker's Bureau member, experienced Kristallnacht when the Nazis burned synagogues, vandalized Jewish homes and businesses and made the first mass arrests of Jewish men and boys - including his father who was sent to Dachau concentration camp. The Kristallnacht pogrom is widely regarded as the beginning of the Holocaust.

Ed Lessing, also an HHREC Speakers Bureau member, was born in Holland, and went into hiding for three years after his family dispersed. Posing as a Christian stable boy, he hid on isolated Dutch farms. Lessing was a member of a Dutch Resistance group that was attacked by the SS in December 1943.

"It is imperative that younger generations learn about the Holocaust, as the number of survivors who can share first-hand experiences is diminishing. It is our hope that the lessons that the students learn will enable them to see that every person deserves basic human rights, said Donna Cohen, HHREC's Executive Director.

Andrew Cahn, Regional Museum Educator for United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and an HHREC volunteer, served as moderator.

The Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center is located at 2900 Purchase Street, Purchase, New York 10577. For further information, please call 914.696.0738, e-mail hhrec@bestweb. net, or visit www. holocausteducationctr. org.

About the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center (HHREC): The Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center is an interfaith, not-for-profit organization serving Westchester, Fairfield and Putnam counties to encourage and enhance teaching and learning about the Holocaust and its human rights lessons for today. Its members encourage students to speak up and act against all forms of bigotry and prejudice.

West Virginia University of Parkersburg Announces New Online Course

West Virginia University of Parkersburg Announces New Online Course

West Virginia University at Parkersburg recently partnered with Gatlin Education Services to provide a new online career training program.

Parkersburg, WV (PRWEB) October 14, 2006

Online career training courses are in heavy demand. Staying on the cutting edge of this popular educational methodology, West Virginia University at Parkersburg recently partnered with Gatlin Education Services to provide an online career training course in the field of healthcare – pharmacy technician.

The program teaches students the necessary skills to gain employment as a pharmacy technician, a position that assists with various activities of the pharmacy department that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist.

Additionally, students enrolled in the program who meet basic qualifications are eligible to take the Walgreens externship program through the company’s partnership with Gatlin. Walgreens supplies interns with 80 to 160 hours of hands-on experience that includes assisting pharmacists with prescriptions, answering patient questions about medications and a bevy of administrative duties.

The course can help individuals at any stage of their career. Whether the student is interested in switching career paths, obtaining advanced training and certificates, or a first-time job seeker in need of specialized training, West Virginia University at Parkersburg and Gatlin provide the necessary resources for workforce, corporate, vocational rehabilitation or individual career training, all from the convenience of your own home or office.

Gatlin programs blend various types of instruction in a unique format that provides logical, comprehensive and effective education. The typical course combines online instructional content, traditional textbook material and instructor-facilitated lessons. Though the courses are self-paced, personal instructors are available to guide every student. This blended learning differentiates Gatlin and West Virginia University at Parkersburg courses from ordinary online courses. Each course is open enrollment and takes an average of 90 days to complete.

Web-based instruction is growing in popularity. Gatlin’s enrollments with their partner institutions have increased by 100 percent in the last year. The company has strategic partnerships with more than 480 institutions of higher learning worldwide.

“Between juggling a job, a home, a family and a social life, there isn’t always a lot of time left to attend an on-campus class,” said Stephen Gatlin, founder of Fort Worth-based Gatlin Education Services. “Online training offers the convenience of working from your personal computer and at your own pace. It’s a viable tool right now as evidenced by the growing number of people utilizing it, and is the way of the future.”

Established in 1989 by Stephen Gatlin, Gatlin Education Services is the largest provider of Web-based, instructor-supported training to community colleges and universities. Gatlin’s courses are open-enrollment. This means interested students can start their desired training tomorrow. Gatlin’s online career training courses are designed to provide the skills necessary to acquire professional caliber positions for many in-demand occupations.

A Young Adult Book that introduces readers to the story of Baucis and Philemon and the Latin Language A Walk With Ovid By Jennifer F. Knapp Publisher: JFK Online Studios, LLC Published: July 1, 2003 Pages: 30 ISBN: 0-9742249-0-1

A Young Adult Book that introduces readers to the story of Baucis and Philemon and the Latin Language

A Walk With Ovid

By Jennifer F. Knapp

Publisher: JFK Online Studios, LLC

Published: July 1, 2003

Pages: 30

ISBN: 0-9742249-0-1

This wonderfully illustrated and written books tells the story of Ovid, a black pug, and his friend Lillian. They meet a boy who helps them and realize the meaning of Baucis and Philemon, a Latin poem, still has meaning today.

Ovid is name after Publius Ovidius Naso, who wrote poems in 43 B. C. to 18 A. D. which make up the The Metamorphoses. There are 15 books within The Metamorphoses that tell 100 different myths, including "The Story of Baucis and Philemon."

As old as these stories are, Ovid Pugnacious realizes during a walk with Lillian that the lessons taught in this poem are still apparent, even in todayÂ’s times. While on their daily walk, Lillian and Ovid get stuck in the rain. A boy shelters them from the storm and offers the dog a biscuit, showing them great compassion. Ovid wants to return the favor, but upon returning to the boyÂ’s home, they realize that his wish has already been granted.

Although the story line is a great one, the book really teaches a lesson, just like the Latin Poet used to do. There are Latin texts within the book, that are translated within the appendix. I studied Latin in school and rarely ever get to utilize this knowledge, but was very pleased with the text and the translation. This is a wonderful story and book for any child to read or parent to read to the child. I have shared this book with my children and they now want an “Ovid” of their own.

This amazing book is available from the Publisher, JFK Online Studios, and is also available from Amazon. com

Wood You Know? A BuyerÂ’s Guide to Wood Flooring

Wood You Know? A BuyerÂ’s Guide to Wood Flooring

IFLOOR. com has taken upon itself the formidable task of arming consumers with a wealth of information to help them decide which flooring fits best.

(PRWEB) September 20, 2005

Selecting the perfect floor covering is not always an easy task. With literally thousands upon thousands of flooring products to choose from, it is quite easy to fall into a pit of frustration and confusion.

IFLOOR. com, the largest internet-based flooring store, understands how consumers feel. The company has taken upon itself the formidable task of arming consumers with a wealth of information to help them decide which flooring fits best. The websiteÂ’s informative original articles cover nearly every flooring product available in the market. Plus, it offers an extensive database of Frequently Asked Questions and exclusive installation videos designed to answer all flooring questions imaginable.

On wood floors

Wood floors are among iFLOOR. comÂ’s fastest selling products taking up 29 percent of the companyÂ’s sales. This category alone can be broken down into three sub-categories:

Solid hardwood floor, typically available in ¾-inch thickness, is composed of one material all throughout the piece. For instance, for a solid oak hardwood, what you get is solid oak from top to bottom.

Engineered wood floors, on the other hand, are made up of multiple layers. The first ply is the prime part of the material, a piece of real wood that is the species you are buying like oak or maple. The other layers are made up of different species different from the first layer -- a lot like a plywood floor. The layers are typically constructed with a method called cross-ply lamination to enhance the strength of the floor.

Veneer is a hybrid between a laminate and an engineered floor. Unlike laminate floors, which lack the natural depth found in real hardwood floors, veneer looks like and is actually the real thing. About 1/16 of an inch of hardwood is pressed against an HDF (high-density fiberboard). The downside to this is it cannot be sanded, although installation and maintenance are similar to laminate -- fast and easy. It is also less expensive than both engineered and hardwood floors.

To find out more about wood floors, read the article Wood vs. Wood: Solid Hardwood and Engineered Wood Floors Face-off (http://www. ifloor. com/articles/wood/woodvswood. html (http://www. ifloor. com/articles/wood/woodvswood. html)).

Accountants Face New Concerns Says Fraud Expert

Accountants Face New Concerns Says Fraud Expert

A recent revision of standards for accounting review services could put many practitioners at risk, according to experts on business fraud at Cendrowski Corporate Advisors (CCA).

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, MI (PRWEB) September 11, 2004

A recent revision of standards for accounting review services could put many practitioners at risk, according to experts on business fraud at Cendrowski Corporate Advisors (CCA).

Although the revised standard is designed to help accountants improve their professional review, it can pose certain pitfalls for accountants, says CCA founder Harry Cendrowski.

The revision, called SSARS 10 (Statements on Standards for Accounting and Review Services), affects reviews of financial statements ending on or after December 15, 2004. It was recently issued by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and is an expansion of previous guidelines on analytical procedures and other review procedures.

Most notably, the new standard requires accountants to make inquiries regarding fraud in a review process and to obtain added input from a clientÂ’s management regarding fraud, Cendrowski notes. It also includes an implied responsibility for understanding the internal controls for fraud deterrence within the organization.

Cendrowski warns that accountants who are not prepared to properly judge responses to these inquiries in order recognize the warning signs of fraud, and communicate them to a client companyÂ’s owners, could be exposed to professional liability, whether the company is public or privately held.

“Fraud studies consistently show that strong internal controls are the most important defense against fraud,” Cendrowski notes. “Accountants will need to develop a mindset for fraud awareness and deterrence in order to manage the risk associated with the performance of a review.”

“Fraud continues to be recognized as a major problem for business, and the accounting profession will continue to modify professional standards to consider the impacts of fraud,” he says. “The new standards dictated by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act raised the bar for governance and financial reporting. These practices are now becoming a benchmark for private companies and nonprofits as well.”

The risk to accountants is that they may not uncover a fraudulent situation, given the often-subversive means used to conceal fraud. Under the new standard, the accountant could be held responsible for not discovering it.

For this reason, accountants will need to fully understand the many elements of fraud when providing review services under the new standard.

In 2003, Cendrowski and senior manager Jim Martin developed and licensed the training program for the Certified Fraud Deterrence (CFD) professional designation offered by the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts (NACVA). The CFD program is the first new fraud designation by any national professional organization in the past 20 years.

The objectives of the training program mirror those of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act as well as recent statements by Securities and Exchange Commission leaders about proactive deterrence of fraud for both private and public companies. The CFD program includes 40 hours of classroom instruction, an eight-hour exam and a comprehensive written case analysis incorporating CCAÂ’s unique proactive measures to deter fraud in an organization. The fraud-deterrence training program is now held across the country and attended by professionals from corporate, private, government and non-profit organizations.

Cendrowski Corporate Advisors provides consulting services to private, public and non-profit organizations, including forensic accounting; internal control assessment and fraud deterrence; fraud investigation and remediation; expert witness; fraud deterrence training & education; business valuation; risk assessment; operational review; litigation support; internal audit; business continuity planning, and bankruptcy and fiduciary.

Media Outlets in Arizona Growing According to 27th Edition of the FinderBinderÂ&#174

Media Outlets in Arizona Growing According to 27th Edition of the FinderBinder®

More media outlets opened in Arizona during the past year than previous years according to the FinderBinder®, Media Directory.

Tempe AZ (PRWEB) September 17, 2005

Published by the Rita Sanders Public Relations and Advertising Agency of Tempe, the unique media reference work includes 608 television and radio stations, weekly and monthly newspapers and magazines, educational and cable broadcast stations plus wire services.

“That’s 58 more than last year,” said Sanders. “When we put the 2006 FinderBinder® together, we found out we had to delete 10 media outlets that were no longer in business, but on the other hand we added 48. For the past several years, growth has been stagnant, same number declined as new arrived.”

The 2006 edition will be available October 1, 2005 and according to Sanders, the latest FinderBinder®, includes 46 television stations, 150 radio stations and 412 print publications throughout the state, including national publications headquartered in Arizona.

Sanders, who has published the media directory since 1979 said, “The growth is in the print publications. The variety is endless, there is something for everyone.”

Available in print and online, the FinderBinder® is designed to serve advertising and public relations firms, government agencies, non-profit organizations and corporations that need a quick and easy way to contact the news media or advertising representatives.

“And since both editors and advertising representatives have a tendency to change quite often, we produce a monthly update to keep the FinderBinder® buyers up to date on who’s who and where,” added Sanders.

“Our electronic version is updated daily online.”

Both print and online versions contain each media outletÂ’s contact names, addresses, telephone and fax numbers and email addresses for editors, reporters and advertising personnel.

FinderbBinder® subscribers will find media outlets listed from A to Y (there are none listed that start with Z), beginning with AAA Arizona Highroads Magazine and ending with Yuma Business Journal.

“What makes the FinderBinder® unique and useful is that the data is so fresh,” said Sanders.

A long time user, Alison Bendler, Public Relations Director of Basha’s marketing department said, “I really like the updates to the Finder Binder Web site. Searching the database is very straightforward. It's so quick and easy to find just the right the media contacts. It's great to have access to up-to-date information. Thanks for your help.”

The annual cost for a FinderBinder®, which includes 11 months of newsletters and a compact three-ring binder with tabbed dividers, is $293.49. The printed directory plus the online version is available for $423.21. The online version by itself costs $520.56.

“These prices are even lower than last year,” Sanders added.

FinderBinder® Editor Jennifer McElyea said it is beneficial for subscribers to have both hard copy and electronic versions. She said, “The book is a quick reference while online speeds up the building of lists, faxing and electronic distribution of the news.”

Nicotine Not Medicine, Its Use Not Therapy

Nicotine Not Medicine, Its Use Not Therapy

A new study has found that nicotine inhibits chemotherapy drugs from destroying lung cancer cells. Although smokers diagnosed with lung cancer will be discouraged from using the nicotine patch, gum or lozenge, quitting surveys continue to show absolutely no cessation advantage over smokers quitting without them.

Charleston, SC (PRWEB) April 21, 2006

We already knew that drop for drop nicotine is deadlier than arsenic, cyanide, strychnine or diamond back rattlesnake venom, that it can quickly desensitize critical brain pathways, and is highly addictive and harder to beat than heroin or cocaine. Now a new April 2006 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) reports that nicotine, in any form, may prevent chemotherapy from killing lung cancer cells.

Nicotine Prevents Lung Cancer Cells from Dying

Chemotherapy drugs Gemcitabine, Cisplatin and Taxol trigger death of cancerous cells via a process known as "apoptosis." The study shows how nicotine, via certain types of acetylcholine receptors, prevents apoptosis. One of the study's authors, Srikumar Chellappan, has been widely quoted by the AP as saying that smokers with lung cancer "should avoid nicotine in all forms, not just smoking."

Imagine being a smoker and bombarded by two decades of pharmaceutical industry nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) marketing proclaiming that replacement nicotine is the key to quitting, that it doubles your chances. Now try to imagine the catch-22 of being told your treatment battle against lung cancer probably won't be effective unless you first battle and arrest your chemical dependency upon nicotine.

Smokers whose dependency denial arsenal once included such thoughts as "anyone can quit smoking but it takes a real man to fight lung cancer" are now scrambling for new denial rationalizations.

Few dependent upon nicotine understand the scientific harm jargon. But it cannot sound good to those able to drop their denial barrier long enough to listen. According to the PANS study, "previous studies have implied that nicotine may be genotoxic, forming adducts with DNA... thereby causing mutations in vital genes leading to neoplastic transformation." "However recent evidence has shown that nicotine can also lead to sustained activation of mitogenic pathways, promote angiogenesis, and accelerate tumor growth rates and atherosclerosis."

Words like antiapoptotic, genotoxic, angiogenesis and atherosclerosis have little meaning when the chemical you are addicted is so captivating that despite more than 40% of smokers attempting to quit each year, roughly half of all adult smokers end up smoking themselves to death, each an average of 13 to 14 years early.

"Our findings are in agreement with clinical studies showing that patients who continue to smoke have worse survival profiles than those who quit before treatment; they also raise the possibility that nicotine supplementation for smoking cessation might reduce the response to chemotherapeutic agents," says the PANS study.

NRT Pharmaceutical Industry Has Not Been Entirely Honest

But there is growing awareness that replacement nicotine products such as the nicotine patch, gum and lozenge (nicotine supplementation) have zero value as aids to smoking cessation or nicotine cessation. Never once, in all real-world quit smoking surveys conducted to date, have those using replacement nicotine products performed better than those quitting cold turkey. Below is a sampling of facts the nicotine industry would rather those wanting to quit smoking not know:

Almost all successful long-term quitters during 2006 will once again be cold turkey quitters (80-90%)

Quitting resources offering a solid dependency recovery education, that enhance motivation and that offer some form of ongoing support will dramatically enhance a smoker's odds of joining more than 40 million U. S. ex-smokers who successfully quit nicotine cold turkey

93% of study participants in the seven over-the-counter nicotine patch and gum studies relapsed to smoking within six months

Almost 100% second time nicotine patch users relapse to smoking within six months

36.6% of current nicotine gum users have been dependent upon it for more than six months

Nicotine is a psychoactive drug producing dopamine/adrenaline intoxication. Early clinical NRT studies were not blind as claimed. The industry knew its clinical studies were not blind as early as 1982, when in the first nicotine gum studies it found itself compelled to use 1mg of nicotine as a placebo device masking agent. Amazingly, for more than two decades, it has promoted clinical results that it knew or should have known were defective and fatally flawed.

A September 2002 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that... "NRT appears no longer effective in increasing long-term successful cessation in California smokers"

Real-world quitter surveys from Minnesota, London, Quebec and Maryland found zero advantage at six months for those using expensive NRT products

Growthink Reveals How to Identify and Contact the Right Venture Capital Firm Partner

Growthink Reveals How to Identify and Contact the Right Venture Capital Firm Partner

According to Growthink, venture capital firms are comprised of individual partners. It is critical to find and contact the right partner in order to get your deal funded.

(PRWEB) November 28, 2005

According to Growthink, venture capital firms are comprised of individual partners. These partners make investment decisions and typically take a seat on each portfolio company’s Board. Partners tend to invest in what they know, so finding a partner that has past work experience in your industry is very helpful. This relevant experience allows them to more fully understand your venture’s value proposition and gives them confidence that they can add value, thus encouraging them to invest.

Fortunately, says Growthink, most venture capital firm websites list their partners with great pride. Each partner typically has a bio that includes their educational credentials, business accomplishments and investments that they have made. In identifying the right venture capital partner to contact for your company, try to find the partner that, from their background, will truly grasp the opportunity and can really add value.

Once you have identified the most appropriate venture capital partner, it is important to figure out how to contact them. As partners are often inundated with business plans, having a personal connection and/or introduction is often the difference between getting heard and not getting heard. For instance, if you attended the same university or worked at a company that they did, call or email them and use this as the introduction. If not, it is important to network. Call people that may have been associated with the partner and ask for an introduction.

According to Growthink, getting the partner’s attention is the first key hurdle in raising venture capital. The second hurdle is getting them to believe in the opportunity, and finally, giving them the enthusiasm and information needed to convince other partners in their firm that investing in your venture represents a sound investment.

The Digital Education Group Launches Technology Contest for K-12 Teachers

The Digital Education Group Launches Technology Contest for K-12 Teachers

Academic consulting firm wants to know how free technologies are being used in today’s classrooms; will share results with educators.

Washington, DC (PRWEB) February 16, 2010

The Digital Education Group (DEG)—a new academic consulting firm specializing in 21st century classroom technology—opened its 'Innovative Technology in the Classroom Contest 1.0' to all K-12 teachers this week, encouraging educators across the country to interact and exchange instructional technology ideas.

To enter the contest, teachers are asked to describe how they creatively use a free technology—such as blogs, mobile phones or Skype—to engage students and advance achievement in the classroom. Entrants are then automatically entered into a drawing to win one of three Amazon Kindles® plus a $100 Amazon® Gift Certificate.

"Historically speaking, teachers have always been the catalyst for classroom innovation," said DEG President Mike Huling. "Day in and day out they try new strategies to engage students, many of which include free, easily-accessible technologies. Hopefully this contest will elicit a flood of great ideas, which we will freely pass along to other teachers once the winners are chosen in early May."

DEG plans to collect, publish and share all submissions to educators across the country. Those who entered the contest will be the first to have complete access to this exclusive collection of innovative ideas to use in their own classroom.

"We believe that teachers will define the 21st century classroom," added Huling. "This contest is simply an easy way for them to share ideas that work and to learn from others. And if they win a Kindle and a gift certificate in the process, then that's icing on the cake."

All entries must be submitted by April 30, 2010. Teachers should visit www. digeduc. com or DEG's Facebook page to learn more about the contest.

About DEG

Treasury Operations in China Increase Focus on Centralisation and Technology Advancements for Improved Control of Cash and Risk

Treasury Operations in China Increase Focus on Centralisation and Technology Advancements for Improved Control of Cash and Risk

SunGard's Matthew Chen comments on the future of treasury in China: “In the past year or so, we have seen corporations increase their demand for treasury management systems that can help them remain competitive in both domestic and foreign markets.”

Beijing, China (Vocus) March 24, 2010

Matthew Chen, vice president and head of corporations for SunGard China, said, “In the coming year, many corporations in China will be taking steps to modernise their treasury operations by finding ways of promoting centralisation, achieving connectivity with overseas operations and establishing best practices for cash and risk management.”

To view the video interview of Matthew Chen discussing the future of treasury in China, please visit http://bit. ly/a6xBHn for the English language version and http://bit. ly/ds3OfK for Mandarin.

A recent survey conducted by EuroFinance Research Services in collaboration with SunGard, finds that Chinese companies are expanding the role of the treasury to support overall company growth, preserve capital and manage risk. The report, Treasury’s future in China: Time to act?, illustrates the need for treasury departments in China to centralise and streamline treasury activities in order to help improve visibility, lower operating costs and extend resources.

Three Trends in China driving adoption of Treasury Technology:
Internationalisation: large corporations in China are expanding internationally, where competitors already use modern treasury technology.

Centralisation: corporate treasuries are no longer viewed as isolated departments, requiring integration of systems and processes that can facilitate improved management and visibility into cash flow, as well as offer better control over liquidity across the financial supply chain.

Global Economic Uncertainty: economic uncertainties in North America and Europe are prompting companies in China to enhance risk mitigation when operating across borders.

Huang Xiaofeng, general manager, Treasury Department, CNOOC Limited, said, “At the end of 2008, we made the decision to centralise the treasury operation of CNOOC Limited. By improving automation through the treasury management system, we have reduced the need for staff to spend time on routine tasks, so they can be more profitably employed on skilled activities. It is easier to monitor the company’s cash, and management reporting can be produced more quickly and accurately.”

London, UK (PRWEB) September 9, 2009

It's official: the price of a pint has gone up again for Oktoberfest 2009. Munich City Council have announced a price increase of 3.8% from last year, with the average cost of one litre of beer 8.44 Euros.

The news will come as a blow to fans of the annual beer fest, with prices already hiked up an extra 5% in 2008. 6 million litres of Bavarian beer are drunk at the festival every year, believed to be the best in the world for its 'pure' mix of hops, barley and water.

The recent price hikes may be enough to put anyone off knocking back a few, but you can still enjoy the festival on a budget by staying at one of the hostels in Munich (http://www. hostelbookers. com/hostels/germany/munich/). Whilst most of the rooms are long gone, there is still some late availability for group bookings.

To help beer fans get the best of the fest, HostelBookers have also put together Oktoberfest travel tips (http://www. hostelbookers. com/article/festivals/oktoberfest/). With tips ranging from food stalls to attractions beyond the beer tents, it's the essential guide to this year's events.

Washington DC-area IVF Specialist Suheil Muasher, MD Addresses Fears of Infertility Treatments after Octuplet Mom News

Washington DC-area IVF Specialist Suheil Muasher, MD Addresses Fears of Infertility Treatments after Octuplet Mom News

The recent controversy involving a California woman who gave birth to octuplets after fertility treatment has prompted many women considering In Vitro Fertilization to fear they may end up in a similar situation. A top Washington DC-area IVF Specialist says not only is the California case unusual, but there are strict guidelines doctors must adhere to in order to ensure IVF treatments are safe, and that the risks of dangerous multiple pregnancies are dramatically reduced.

Fairfax, VA (Vocus) March 17, 2009

With the recent barrage of publicity covering the so-called “Octuplet Mom” in California, many people have been wondering about the safety of in vitro fertilization, and how this particular IVF pregnancy resulted in the birth of eight infants. Doctors who specialize in IVF treatment are also asking questions. The case of Nadya Suleman has raised a number of alarms in the in vitro fertilization community, especially since Suleman has gone on record saying her doctor treated her with six embryos. Guidelines set forth by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) advise specialists to transfer no more than two embryos in an IVF procedure for someone of Suleman’s age and previous history of pregnancy.

Dr. Suheil Muasher is a board certified Washington DC, Fairfax, Virginia infertility specialist. He says that, while all the facts are not yet known in Ms. Suleman’s case, the transfer of six embryos into her uterus should not have happened. “There is no question that there was no justification in transferring this many multiple embryos.”

In an interview with the Washington Times, Dr. Muasher says that most in his specialty are outraged, and the Suleman case reflects badly on an area of science that has worked for decades to help women who have trouble getting pregnant. Dr. Muasher says he wants to reassure women who may be reconsidering IVF treatment because of the case in California. “We tell patients that the vast majority of IVF babies, greater than 97%, are either singletons or twins. There is no reason to fear IVF treatment simply because there is a higher chance of a multiple pregnancy.”

Dr. Muasher is head of The Muasher Center for Fertility and IVF, specializing in IVF for Washington DC, Fairfax, Virginia, and Maryland-area patients, as well as those from around the world. He participated in the original research that ultimately led to the IVF protocol used in most clinics today. Dr. Muasher says his facility tries to educate patients that the best possible outcome of in vitro fertilization is to have a healthy singleton baby. “Education is very important as many patients do not truly understand the increased risks of multiple pregnancy. We also try to follow the guidelines of our professional societies in limiting the number of embryos transferred.”

Those guidelines from ASRM stipulate that: women under 35 with a favorable prognosis of carrying a fetus to term should have 1-2 embryos transferred; those under 35 with less favorable prognoses should have 2 embryos transferred; women ages 35-37 (favorable prognosis) should have 2 embryos transferred; those with an unfavorable prognosis should have 3. The guidelines typically increase the number of embryos recommended for transfer depending on the patient’s age and prognosis, but the guideline never goes above a 5-embryo transfer recommendation (for patients over 40.

Dr. Muasher says although some individuals and couples would like to have a multiple pregnancy, he tells patients at his Washington DC / Fairfax, Virginia-area infertility clinic that multiple pregnancy, even twins, carries a higher risk of complications for both babies and mother. “Even though many of our patients want to have twins, there is no justification in increasing the number of embryos transferred as this will also increase the number of triplets and higher order multiple pregnancy. In favorable patients who are younger than 37 years old the incidence of twins is approximately 20 to 25%, per total pregnancies, with the transfer of two embryos.”

Since the ASRM first issued its guidelines in 1997, multiple pregnancies from IVF treatments have been on the decline. In the wake of the “Octuplet Mom” story, some have asked if there should be laws restricting the number of embryos a reproductive endocrinologist can transfer during an IVF procedure. Although Dr. Muasher does not believe there should be strict laws limiting the number of embryos, he says most specialists adhere to the ASRM guidelines. “In the US, we are lucky that medical decisions are left to the patient and her doctor. In some other countries strict laws have lead to negative outcomes and are not necessarily in the patient’s best interests. However, the medical community needs to speak out whenever there is a situation when the practice of medicine deviates a lot from the standard of care, as it was in this case.”

Arctic Scientists See Faster Melting, Higher Floodwaters for Philadelphia Area

Arctic Scientists See Faster Melting, Higher Floodwaters for Philadelphia Area

Two of the world’s leading experts on the ice melting in the Arctic came to town today to tell what they’ve seen, and to demonstrate the implications for the Philadelphia/Camden region. They released the most detailed maps and video animations yet of exactly what could go under water this century in this area.

Philadelphia, PA (Vocus) October 21, 2009 -–

Two of the world’s leading experts on the ice melting in the Arctic came to town today to tell what they’ve seen, and to demonstrate the implications for the Philadelphia/Camden region. They released the most detailed maps and video animations yet of exactly what could go under water this century in this area.

According to the scientists, the old estimates for rising seas due to global warming were overly optimistic. Fresh data from the poles now indicates between three and four feet or more of rise by the year 2100 or sooner, which will have much more of an impact on Philadelphia and the nation, they said. The scientists followed up with a graphic demonstration at the water’s edge of how high the water could get in just a few decades.

Dr. Gordon Hamilton, a research professor at The University of Maine, and Dr. Asa Rennermalm, a professor at Rutgers, are active in current research on the rapid decline of the Greenland ice sheet. They presented their findings at The Wagner Free Institute.

“Nothing compares to being in a small boat, slowly sailing through the glassy waters of a glacial fjord and being surrounded by icebergs larger than the town I live in. And to know that these icebergs are being calved off the ice sheet at a rate three times faster now than just a few years ago,” said Dr. Hamilton.

Those melting icebergs will have far-reaching effects, according to the scientists. To demonstrate, Dr. Andrew Maguire, a former N. J. congressman, went to the Adventure Aquarium in Camden, N. J. Donning a pair of hip boots, he went to the water’s edge and raised the Hula Hoop to near his knees, representing the previous estimate by the Nobel prize-winning scientists on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that sea levels would rise approximately 17.3 inches this century. Slowly, as he spoke, he moved the hoop to his waist and then his chest, representing the new range of the rising seas now expected.

“The impacts of a meter of sea-level rise for Philadelphia's physical and economic infrastructure would be very dire,” said Rep. Maguire, with most of the city's transportation facilities needing protection that would cost billions of dollars. “But I’m also concerned with the effect on Camden. As someone who once represented New Jersey in the U. S. Congress, I can tell you that this city would be devastated by that much change. Much of the area closest to the river will be swamped with water if we don’t take action now to avert this disaster.”

The speakers recommended a three-pronged approach to addressing climate change:
First, they advocate doing what we can to reduce our emissions of greenhouse gases to lessen future global warming, with personal actions at home to reduce energy use and by supporting our society’s conversion to clean energy and ultra-efficient homes, vehicles, appliances, and factories.

Second, support both Federal legislation to cap carbon dioxide emissions and reduce them through a cap-and-trade mechanism and US involvement in international efforts to control black carbon from diesel, methane, and tropospheric ozone emissions scientists believe are accelerating Arctic warming and melting.

Finally, they said, we need to begin planning for the infrastructure changes needed to mitigate or minimize the impact on our cities and adapt as much as possible to the climate change from the greenhouse gas emissions already in the atmosphere, such as by respecting a “new flood plain” and preparing to move back from the rising ocean and building sea walls.

The event was part of the “Hip Boot Tour,” which will visit coastal cities from Miami, Fla., to Portland, Maine to inform and educate Americans about the direct impact they will face from melting ice caused by global warming. The tour will bring leading scientists from their research stations in the Arctic through the cities before culminating with events in New York City and Washington, D. C.

The stop in Philadelphia was sponsored by Clean Air-Cool Planet, the leading science-based, non-partisan, non-profit organization dedicated solely to finding and promoting solutions to global warming. It was cosponsored in this area by the Clean Air Council, a member-supported, non-profit environmental organization dedicated to protecting everyone's right to breathe clean air, and the Wagner Free Institute of Science, a museum and educational institution offering a range of programs for visiting school groups.

The event is free and open to the public and will be held in M001 auditorium of the Harold D. West Basic Sciences Building, on 21st Avenue North at Meharry Boulevard.

Global AIDS Weeks of Action are held at institutions throughout the U. S. during March and April. Sponsored by Physicians for Human Rights in conjunction with Partners in Health and the American Medical Student Association, the weeks feature activities designed by participating medical schools to focus on education and action on global HIV/AIDS.
