Pilot project to lay the foundations for scientific work of the future

Pilot project to lay the foundations for scientific work of the future

FIZ Karlsruhe and Max Planck Society in strategic partnership

Karlsruhe, Germany (PRWEB) October 3, 2004

FIZ Karlsruhe and the Max Planck Society (MPS) have been awarded funding of 6.1 million Euro to develop a new platform for web-based collaborative scientific work.

The new project — eSciDoc — will be jointly managed by FIZ Karlsruhe and MPS, who have entered into a strategic partnership for the purpose. FIZ Karlsruhe will provide development and IT services, and will operate central services.

The intention is to create an integrated information, communication and publication platform for web-based scientific work so that scientists working in the 80 research institutes of the Max Planck Society can collaborate together.

The funding for eSciDoc — which will last for five years — is being provided by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), under the framework of the German national eScience initiative.

ESciDoc will address all aspects of scientific communication, from the creation and editing of information, the sharing of data with peers, and the publication of research results, to the storage and long-term archiving of research papers. It will include interactive tools and will be able to handle multiple data sources and types, including video and audio. The ability to link to external data sources will also form an integral part of the new platform.

As part of a commitment to the aims of the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities — signed by MPS last October — eSciDoc will also enable MPS scientists to publish their research on the Internet, making it available to other researchers around the world, as well as to the public.

The results of the project will also be shared with other scientific organisations and it is envisaged that — with appropriate modifications — the system will in the future be utilised as a publication and communication platform by other research institutions too. Individual services developed by FIZ Karlsruhe as part of the project — e. g. system modules, software tools and interfaces — may also be made available to other scientific institutions as open source tools, enabling them to be used in a variety of other environments.

“This new innovative working environment will enable any scientist around the world — wherever they live, whatever their field of research — to communicate professionally with their peers,” explains Sabine Brünger-Weilandt, Managing Director and CEO of FIZ Karlsruhe. “At the same time, they will be able to retrieve information from various international sources, and to publish their research results online.”

She adds: “An important prerequisite for unlimited access to research results is a sustainable environment to support the publishing and sharing of multidisciplinary scientific results, and their exploitation for cross-disciplinary purposes. As yet all the necessary organisational and technical requirements have yet to be put in place: there remains a need, for instance, to develop rugged standards and a suitable international infrastructure. The best way of achieving this is through close collaboration between appropriate national and international initiatives. We envisage eSciDoc playing an important part in this process.”

Through a project called D-Grid, for instance, the BMBF is also funding the development of so-called Grid Services. This will support scientific partnerships by means of high-performance computer resources and distributed databases. As such it offers significant potential synergy with eSciDoc.

It is anticipated that the project will also assist FIZ Karlsruhe build closer links with other institutions in the future, thereby strengthening its position as a service provider for the scientific community.

“Being a service institution for scientific information, we look forward to co-operating in this important innovative project with such a renowned research institution as the MPS”, says Sabine Brünger-Weilandt. “FIZ Karlsruhe will bring to eSciDoc its considerable experience and expertise in building publication platforms and developing and operating scientific information systems.”

Involvement in this pioneering project fits with FIZ KarlsruheÂ’s dual strategy of providing service and advice to both industry and science, and will help position it more strongly as a service provider for information and knowledge management. The partnership with the MPS has been warmly welcomed by the Leibniz Association, of which FIZ Karlsruhe is a member organisation.

The project will be jointly managed by Ms. Theresa Velden, of the Max Planck SocietyÂ’s Heinz Nixdorf Center for Information Management, and Dr. Leni Helmes of FIZ Karlsruhe.

Southern Sweden has over 35,000 professionals working in the areas of innovative game design, new media and smart handheld devices. It is an acknowledged hot-spot for digital innovation.

X Media Lab Sweden is being held at its heart, Malmo, and the event comprises two parts, the Conference Day on 21 January, and the Lab which takes place on 22-23 January.

The event will encompass a wide range of strategies that can be embraced by all traditional and digital media professionals, including those who are involved in producing interactive media content - virtual worlds, social media, interactive television and education industries.

In fact, Mark Ollila, Director, X Media Solutions, Media & Games for Nokia believes that “XML is the premier event in media innovation across cultures”.

Conference

The Conference is set to explore international media business opportunities and the latest technological and business innovations in developing Location Based Services (LBS) for global markets. Of particular interest will be the sessions that explore how to integrate positioning and proximity into the burgeoning digital media and games arenas.

According to CEO of the Nordic Games Institute, Sten Selander “X Media Lab Sweden will bring together the specialists who will undoubtedly create and deliver future Location Based Services solutions to the games industry.”

Lab

The Lab is an intensive creative ideas and mentoring environment where selected project teams and media companies are able to work directly on their own project ideas, with mentoring by the world’s best digital media experts.

Lab participation has been shown to improve the chances of bringing an idea to market. It also provides unparalleled opportunities to network with international media stars and entrepreneurs with the expertise that can help ensure a project’s commercial success.

“Our Labs have provided the opportunity for individuals and businesses to commercialize their creativity” explains Megan Elliott, X Media Lab Director. “In receiving the mentorship of our Labs’ digital mavens, participants have been able to grasp and implement cutting-edge concepts that lead to commercial breakthroughs.”

Noteworthy among such innovative solutions, is a leading European auto major for whom Ma Foi has designed, developed and is in the process of delivering assessment solutions for developing their dealer network across India.

Ma Foi has also entered into a two year contract with a leading Middle East based Aluminium producer to provide end to end services relating to cross border recruitment of over 900 personnel.

This program was crafted to train the unemployed youth belonging to the Tsunami affected coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. CCF India selected 88 students with the help of their NGO Partners from six different clusters namely Nagapattinam, Karaikal, Veilanganni, Chennai, Cuddalore, Kanyakumari and then were segregated into nine different trades depending on their vision, skills and choice. Each of them was put through a 20 day skill training program in their respective trade.

Ma Foi Global Search Ltd. continued its aggressive growth track with closure of 12 CEO placements primarily in the BFSI, Consumer Retail and Energy segments. With increasing acceptance of Interim Managers in the Indian market, this service offering gathered momentum during H1 primarily in the manufacturing and Consumer Retail segment.

Ma Foi Consulting Solutions Ltd. added yet another service offering - Compliance Practice, to its HR Consulting service portfolio and the first assignment by this practice in the form of a HR Due Diligence study was executed for a US based leading IT and Communication service provider. Save the Tigers

Save the Tigers

Tamils for Obama believes that the U. S. should remove the Tamil Tigers from its list of terrorist organizations. Why should the U. S. reevaluate the role of the Tamil Tigers? Because they are not what their enemies claim they are.

Scarsdale, NY (PRWEB) January 30, 2009

The Colombo government has long tried to portray the Sri Lankan civil war as a government campaign to suppress Tiger terrorism. Westerners, and the western media, have largely allowed the Colombo government to have its way in this matter. That is a pity, because it puts things backward. In fact, state terrorism by the Colombo government preceded the rise of the Tigers by at least three decades.

With independence, power was seized at once by the Singhalese ethnic majority, after which they never relinquished or shared it. Many attempts at peaceful, lawful change were attempted by Tamils and their leaders during the first three decades of independent Ceylon/Sri Lanka. All were thwarted by the Colombo government, which only strengthened its campaign to suppress the Tamils.

The government campaign of violence and oppression against the Tamils began almost as soon as the British left in 1948. There was seizure of land and replacement of Tamils by Singhalese; repeated government-inspired anti-Tamil nation-wide race riots; Sinhalese declared the official language, and used to block employment and education of Tamils; use of Home Guards, ruffians, and other paramilitaries to drive the Tamils out of areas they had occupied for centuries; declaring Buddhism the state religion at the expense of Hinduism and Christianity; and too many other offenses to list here.

All that happened before Tamil armed resistance began with the emergence of the Tamil Tigers in 1983.

This civil war began long before there were any Tamil Tigers to fight against. It began as a government campaign against selected members of its own unarmed civilian population. That this campaign of violent oppression and ethnic cleansing would produce an armed resistance is in retrospect predictable. We can say that the Colombo government itself created the Tamil Tigers.

The list of government armed atrocities against the Tamils is unremitting. What some Tamils called the "slow genocide" of the Tamils is not only continuing it is gaining speed. With the recent string of the government's victories, it looks like (as Tamils fear) the government may finally crush the Tigers.

Here is our problem: the Tamil Tigers, for all their faults (and they have many) are the only defenses the Tamils have had against the deliberate, determined, and well armed government campaign of genocide against them. Tamils fear that when Colombo has defeated the Tigers, they will be wiped out.

For the sake of saving the Tamils from the carefully executed plan of destruction that the Colombo government plainly has in mind for them, the Tigers must be saved.

Tamils are an ethnic group living mainly in the northeast of Sri Lanka and southern India. They are a minority population in Sri Lanka, and are currently bearing the brunt of a civil war they regard as genocide. One third of the Tamil population has fled the island and formed a substantial diaspora overseas. Tamils for Obama is comprised of Tamils who have settled in the U. S. or who were born in the U. S.

Despite the Weak Economy and Rising Costs, Salary Increases Should Hold Steady in 2009, According to a New Survey of U. S. Employers : Annual BLR® Pay Budget Survey released

Despite the Weak Economy and Rising Costs, Salary Increases Should Hold Steady in 2009, According to a New Survey of U. S. Employers : Annual BLR® Pay Budget Survey released

The salary data contained in the Business & Legal Reports, Inc. (BLR) annual BLR® Pay Budget Survey Report, show increases are holding steady for 2009 despite a weak economy and rise in costs. BLR is an award-winning publisher dedicated to supporting companies with up-to-date HR, Compensation, Safety, and Environmental analysis, training, and regulatory compliance information.

OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. (PRWEB) August 20, 2008

The BLR Pay Budget Survey questions employers on planned budgets for merit and general salary increases in 2009, analyzing responses by region, industry, and nationwide, then compiling information critical to employers that want to make sure their compensation packages and annual merit increases are compliant and competitive in the marketplace. This year's survey indicates that the average planned merit increase for 2009 is 3.71%, slightly higher than the actual average merit increase of 3.67% given in 2008. The average budgeted general salary increase in 2009 is 3.47%, compared with 3.40% given in 2008. Employers award merit increases to recognize an employee's achievements and accomplishments, while general increases are typically based on cost of living increases.

Management and Construction Industries Projected to Receive Much Larger Increases

Employees in the Management industry will see merit increases averaging 5.7% and general increases around 4.0%. Exempt workers in the Construction industry are projected to receive average merit increases of 4.7% and general increases of 3.9%. Among other industries expected to give higher-than-average increases is Government, as depicted in the table below, a sample of the Merit and General Increases by Industry Planned for 2009 findings table included in this year's report. Additional industries surveyed and depicted in the full table include Agriculture, Health, Manufacturing, Other Services, Real Estate, Recreation, Retail/Wholesale, Transportation, and Utilities.

Merit and General Increases by Industry Planned for 2009

      Exempt   Nonexempt Office Industry     Merit   General   Merit   General Accommodation     3.8%   3.7%   3.6%   3.4% Construction     4.7%   3.9%   4.5%   4.3% Education     3.5%   3.3%   3.6%   3.3% Finance/Insurance     3.9%   3.8%   3.7%   3.5% Government     4.0%   3.3%   3.7%   3.3% Management     5.7%   4.0%   5.8%   3.5% Larger Merit Increases Planned for Western Half of US

The Central/Rocky Mountain/Southwest and Far West regions of the country are slightly above the average, at 4% for exempt employees and 3.8% for nonexempt office employees. Employers in the East Central part of the country are forecasting the lowest merit increases for 2009, with exempt employees projected to receive average increases of 3.6% and nonexempt employees 3.5%.

Employers face numerous challenges in Compensation Planning

According to BLR Compensation expert Catherine Moreton, J. D., economic pressures and rising costs are likely effecting employers' compensation budgets for 2009. "Employers find themselves in an unusual situation," says Moreton, managing editor of BLR HR and Compensation publications. "The economy is weak and some believe we are in a recession. Unemployment is on the rise. Yet, employers are concerned that they won't be able to hire and retain employees with the talent and experience they need now that the Baby Boomers are beginning to retire. Add to the mix that employees are struggling with big increases in gas and food prices, and it isn't surprising that employers have decided to hold salary increase budgets steady for 2009."

Learn English: WorldWideLearn. com Reveals Bilingualism Brings Career Success

Now that current political debates over immigration policies have exposed the record influx of immigrants and shifting demographics of our society, WorldWideLearn. com is offering valuable resources for language learning to meet the demand for bilingual professionals. Whether on campus or online, students who aim to succeed in the competitive professional world need language training to better serve a population that has become more culturally diverse.

Calgary, AB (PRWEB) June 11, 2007

Recent media coverage of congressional debates over immigration reform and the national language question has drawn attention to America's growing cultural diversity. Competition in today's society often requires that students and professionals become bilingual. WorldWideLearn. com, the world's premier online directory of education, offers a language course section with valuable resources for those people seeking to learn a second language and increase their career options (http://worldwidelearn. com/language-courses/index. html (http://worldwidelearn. com/language-courses/index. html)).

The U. S. Census Bureau estimates that each day, approximately 3,200 international migrants enter into our country, where there are over 36 spoken languages. According to Wendy Croix, Ph. D., a former professor who writes about education topics, learning a second language is becoming a norm in many educational programs as employers increasingly tend to favor bilingual applicants.

"Few people know that a second language is required for most graduate programs, or that undergraduates with a second language generally get preferential treatment over their English-only counterparts when seeking jobs or grad school admissions," she said.

WorldWideLearn. com features a variety of language learning resources, including a list of online language courses, lessons, classes and tutorials -- grouped into 18 different categories including:
African/Arabic languages.  Learn Chinese.  Learn English.  Learn French.  Learn German.  Learn Italian.  Learn Spanish.  Language translation.  TESL teaching certification.

The language courses page also includes free introductory language courses and demos for those trying to decide whether or not an online language course is the right fit for them (http://worldwidelearn. com/language-courses/index. html (http://worldwidelearn. com/language-courses/index. html)).

WorldWideLearn. com offers various other useful resources to help students and professionals find the educational information they need for future career success. The education adviser section, for example, provides in-depth articles on professional development, learning styles, and online learning tips(http://www. worldwidelearn. com/learning-library/index. html (http://www. worldwidelearn. com/learning-library/index. html)).

Florida Small Business Demonstrates Support of Service-Disabled Veteran through Partnership

Florida Small Business Demonstrates Support of Service-Disabled Veteran through Partnership

Five Points Technology Group goes beyond government mandates to stimulate service-disabled veteran and Pittsburgh native Milo Speranzo’s civilian career success via small-business ownership.

Bradenton, FL (PRWEB) December 16, 2009

Five Points Technology Group (http://www. fiveptg. com) sponsors a service-disabled veteran’s transition from the military to civilian sector – a complex challenge for many veterans – by partnering with him in the conception, financing and development of his own small business, Speranzo & Reed, LLC. Why? Because Five Points believes it’s important for U. S. businesses to tap into the vast resources, skill set and work ethic veterans bring to the table, providing a win-win situation for investor, employer and veteran. More important, Five Points’ majority shareholders Anne Folsom, Elizabeth VanAcker and Rob Reed wanted to help a friend – one returning to civilian life after 13 years in the military and five tours of duty in the Middle East.

“It’s a good thing when anyone in the U. S. can help a returning veteran re-entering civilian life,” says VanAcker, CEO of Five Points Technology Group. “It’s a way to thank them and show we care. In Milo’s case, we knew, hands down, he would be an asset to our company, and being a close childhood friend of Robert Reed made our decision to partner with Milo that much easier.”

Five Points is a small business that is doing what many large businesses won’t undertake -- sponsoring a service-disabled veteran. This is a rarity. The veteran community needs help reassimilating to the civilian world, and many large companies are only doing what’s mandated by the government; this is a disheartening fact for veterans.

“Five Points has gone above and beyond the call of duty by taking a chance on me, molding me and investing in me,” explains Speranzo, managing partner of Speranzo & Reed. “It is small businesses like Five Points that are driving veteran reassimilation. More companies need to understand they can greatly benefit from training veterans for their teams, for these men and women have seen and managed the most serious of situations and can handle any challenge.”

The growing success of Speranzo & Reed (http://www. speranzoandreed. com) is proof that although the education, training and skills acquired in the military may not appear to translate to civilian jobs, they certainly do -- with the payoff being a turnkey, regimented and loyal partner or employee who contributes to the company’s achievements and bottom line.

“Sponsoring Milo after retiring from the military prevented him from having to settle for an entry-level job or return to school – an unfeasible reality many veterans face,” says Folsom, a Five Points shareholder. “I was extremely pleased to take part in helping Milo transition from military to civilian life by sponsoring his small business. Our investment in Milo has already shown a return since the company formation early this year.”

Milo’s extensive experience in emergency management is a complement to Five Points’ expertise in design, development and implementation of software for the health and human services sector. Confident that emergency management needed to be the wheelhouse of Speranzo & Reed, Five Points began looking for emergency management technology already on the market. An advocate of teaming partnerships, Five Points proceeded to connect Speranzo with TEAM Simulations, LLC (http://www. teamsimulations. com) -- a Florida-based company specializing in simulation software and associated technical support. As its new partner, Speranzo & Reed became the exclusive distributor of two turnkey, emergency response software programs: TEST (Tabletop Exercise System Technology), a computer based tabletop exercise system, and SPIN (Special Population Information Registry), a nationwide initiative that provides a Web-based application for managing special-needs populations.

“When Milo got together with TEAM Simulations, they expanded their sales outlook,” says Reed, a Five Points shareholder and director of information technology. “Over time, TEST and SPIN represented not only a private solution, but now a federal solution.”

Utilizing Speranzo's emergency-management training and his understanding of the inner workings of government contracting proved to be a winning combination. Within six months of inception, Speranzo & Reed had secured contracts with multiple federal agencies.

“We knew Milo could strengthen Five Points’ presence on the federal level,” adds VanAcker. “He has taken our products to the federal government, opening the door to a larger customer base for us.”

Launched in 2003, Five Points has grown to 30 full-time employees. Partnering with Speranzo to form Speranzo & Reed has not only afforded a service-disabled veteran an exciting opportunity in the civilian workplace, but it has also enabled Five Points to significantly expand its core business.

“It’s challenging, no matter who you are, to start a new business,” says VanAcker. “We had the experience to assist Milo in navigating this new territory while accomplishing our new business goals. As well, it’s been an enjoyable and rewarding process!”

“I control the overall business philosophy, plan and direction for Speranzo & Reed,” adds Speranzo. “I tell Five Points where we need to go, and they tell me how we’re going to get there. It’s a mutually beneficial partnership that I am very grateful for. Five Points had faith in me, and I encourage companies of all sizes to invest in veterans by providing them with real civilian career opportunities, for they will gain a dedicated partner or employee that will contribute to their success for years to come.”

T & K Futures and Options Predicts Record Corn Futures Prices for 2008

T & K Futures and Options Predicts Record Corn Futures Prices for 2008

Record ethanol production, competition for acreage with soybeans, and wheat, the weak US Dollar and global demand might push corn futures prices to record highs in 2008.

Port St. Lucie, FL (PRWEB) January 7, 2008

Record ethanol production, competition for acreage with soybeans, and wheat, the weak US Dollar and global demand might push corn futures prices to record highs in 2008.

Recent USDA estimates for 2008/09 crop year would mean that the stocks to usage ratio would drop to 8.7% (the second lowest level in 35 years). The all time low was 5% and corn futures prices hit their all time high that same year. Weather problems or an increase in demand have the potential to create historic tightness in the stocks to usage ratio and push corn futures prices back to all time highs. Visit www. tkfutures. com/corn. htm (http://www. tkfutures. com/corn. htm) to learn more.

Corn futures prices need to be high enough to convince farmers not to plant soybeans or wheat in Spring/2008. This battle for the limited available farm acres with soybeans futures prices near $12/bushel and wheat futures prices over $10/bushel makes that choice much harder for farmers. Visit www. tkfutures. com/education. htm (http://www. tkfutures. com/education. htm) to learn more.

The weak US Dollar and the increase in global currency availability have led to food inflation. This situation is usually fought by raising interest rates but the sub-prime mess in the financial markets has made that unlikely. Especially when one considers that the financial services industry accounts for more than 30% of the United States' GDP.

The author of this article is a 14 year veteran of the corn futures markets and the president of T & K Futures and Options Inc. Before considering corn futures or options as an investment vehicle, one must understand that there is significant risk of loss in corn futures and corn options trading. Use only risk capital for high risk investments like corn futures and options. Past performance is not indicative of future results.

First NationsÂ’ Lore Featured on Orca Kayaking Tour

(PRWEB) March 29, 2005

This summer Sea to Sky Expeditions offers kayakers a tour with a special First NationsÂ’ cultural component. Many have kayaked Johnstone Strait on CanadaÂ’s West Coast to see orcas, but have missed the opportunity to delve deeper into a culture that is integral to the area.

Johnstone Strait, on the northeastern coast of Vancouver Island, is well known as a whale watching area. It is the ideal location to observe and photograph one of nature's truly magnificent mammals, the orca or killer whale. Every summer, pods of various sizes, congregate in the waters of Johnstone Strait to feed on Pacific salmon, socialize, and rub themselves on the beaches of Robson Bight.

Lost in this annual phenomenon is the areaÂ’s rich connection to the cultural, traditional, and historical treasures of the Kwakwaka'wakw people. The Kwakwaka'wakw have lived in the area of Johnstone Strait for thousands of years. Their lives, traditions, and legends are closely linked to their west coast environment.

“We felt that a significant ingredient that made Johnstone Strait such an interesting and important destination was being ignored,” said Len Webster, Executive Director for Sea to Sky. “We have arranged with Tom Sewid, the world famous native guardian and historian, to relate the history, legends, and culture of his people, as passed down to him by his grandfather, while visiting archeologically significant sites not shared with most visitors.”

Tom Sewid was born of a Kwakiutl father and Cree mother and grew up in the area of Johnstone Strait. "My greatest education has been the elders of my family and Nation," says Tom. "I can bring forth our history through narration. Legends, stories and modern happenings is what captivates me, and I am constantly in pursuit of more to learn. Sitting with the older generations Native and non-native is one of my greatest passions. To me it cannot be classified as education because it is so exciting to hear about things that happened in the past."

Sea to Sky Expeditions has led sea kayaking trips into Johnstone Strait to see orcas for 17 years. They offer special seven day sea kayaking trips, originating from Vancouver, from June to September. Cost is $1225 US.

Companies call for Employee Community Engagement

Companies call for Employee Community Engagement

Responding to increased calls by major companies to support employee community work, the international business organisation - International Business Leaders Forum - is sending management briefing to major global companies

London, (PRWEB) December 18, 2003

sees the launch of the International Business Leaders ForumÂ’s latest management primer on responsible business practices. The Learning Curve explores and promotes good practice in corporate community engagement and demonstrates the value that each has on individual and organisational learning.

The book aims to support business people that are actively involved in corporate community engagement. It draws on the many years experience of two organisations – The Prince of Wales International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF) and Business in the Community (BITC) – that have both pioneered methodologies in over 40 countries for developing and managing corporate community engagement in systematic and imaginative ways. It is a handbook for practitioners and is designed to enable them to develop their own programmes in ways that will bring tangible results and benefits to all those involved.

Robert Davies, IBLF Chief Executive: “Our work with some of the most successful international companies around the world has made us aware that nurturing talent and leadership has become a critical issue in competitiveness and reputation building. The Learning Curve provides the tools that human resources and community affairs professionals need to develop initiatives to face these issues and create effective programmes – for the business, for employees and for the communities in which they operate.”

Julia Cleverdon, Chief Executive, Business in the Community: "The rise in community investment, as shown in the 2003 PerCent Standard, demonstrates that UK business is recognising that it is as much about investing in the workforce as it is in the community. Furthermore, our research shows that a dynamic, creative and innovative approach to both can be achieved when responsible business practice is fully integrated across the business. Business in the Community sees that the Learning Curve will be a valuable tool for Human Resources and Community Affairs managers involved in community projects."

The book works on the premise that companies can use corporate community engagement as a form of ‘action learning’. Different types of corporate community engagement provide alternative forms of action learning and have the potential to support people in distinct ways:

1. Study visits focusing on ideas and preconceptions: Learning by Seeing

2. Employee engagement looking at the transformation of the physical surroundings and working relationships: Learning by Doing

3. Formalising cross-sector collaboration that supports institution building and professional practice as well as influencing strategic planning: Learning by Partnering.

Learning by Seeing was inspired by The Prince of WalesÂ’s Seeing is Believing Programme which for 20 years has engaged more than 3,000 business leaders with community issues and led to many innovative solutions to community problems. This together with IBLFÂ’s Insight programme demonstrates the effectiveness of study visits of this type.

“I believe Seeing is Believing visits are one of the best ways to engage the most senior business leaders in community involvement and, increasingly, in the wider agenda of corporate responsibility”.

HRH The Prince of Wales (from BITC publication 2002)

“I cannot stress enough how important my International Business Leaders Forum INSIGHT programme is to get people to see at first hand what is needed and what they can achieve”.

HRH The Prince of Wales speaking to American business leaders

Learning by Doing uses employee engagement in the community as its central premise. The chapter is packed with examples from around the world and provides hints and tips on how to leverage community engagement programmes with the skills and talents of employees to provide more value for the community, to the employee and to the business.

Learning by Partnering explains the different types of partnership and the tools and learning impacts that can be achieved through involvement. An exploration of the challenges, risks and benefits of partnering, together with some Golden Rules for participation make this a practical guide to partnerships.

The book is edited by Ros Tennyson and Amanda Bowman of the IBLF with contributions from Kenn Allen, Civil Society Consulting Group, Ken Caplan, BPD: Water and Sanitation, Kate Cavelle, Deutsche Bank, Sasha Hurrell, IBLF, Louise Kjaer, The Copenhagen Centre, Katherine Madden, WBCSD, Charlotte Turner, Business in the Community.

JRS Architect, P. C. Designs 'Friendly' Branches for Bethpage Federal Credit Union

JRS Architect, P. C. Designs 'Friendly' Branches for Bethpage Federal Credit Union

JRS Architect, P. C., which has designed offices and branches for some of the nation's largest financial institutions, has undertaken a branch roll out program Long Island's Bethpage Federal Credit Union. The branch designs aim to create a standardized identity for Bethpage Federal that reflects the financial coop's branding slogan, :"Banking among friends."

Mineola, NY (PRWEB) August 6, 2008

JRS Architect, P. C. is helping Bethpage Federal Credit Union make new friends with its branch designs.

Mineola-based JRS Architect, P. C., an award-winning architectural and interior design firm best known for its work for some of the nation's largest financial institutions, is designing new branches for rapidly growing Bethpage Federal Credit Union (Bethpage) that reflect the credit union's branding slogan, "Banking among friends."

"JRS' designs aim to create a standardized brand identity for Bethpage Federal Credit Union's branches," said JRS Vice President Robert Morrisey, who heads the JRS design team working with Bethpage.

Bethpage's recently opened 3,200-square-foot, freestanding branch in Massapequa, which stands out among the gas stations and restaurants that front Westfield's Massapequa Mall on Sunrise Highway, exemplifies JRS' effort to translate Bethpage's slogan.

The branch's exterior -- brown, split face concrete blocks along with copper and blue aluminum composite panels -- provides a background for Bethpage's familiar blue signage.

"In order to take full advantage of the high visibility corner and the angles of the site, we skewed from the traditional branch layout," Morrisey said of the Massapequa location.

The earth-tone theme is carried over to the branch's interior, where the look welcomes Bethpage members with the feel of a living room complete with flat-panel television, club chairs, twill carpet, slate-look porcelain floor tiles and cherry-wood laminate furnishings, all of which mingle with the company's colors to establish its identity.

JRS has been working for four years with Bethpage, Long Island's largest credit union, on its branch design program. To date, JRS has designed and completed 13 branches, including recently opened ones in Freeport, Farmingdale and Mineola, as well as the credit union's main office in Bethpage. The look will carry over to two new branches, one under construction in Elmont and another waiting for construction permits in Central Islip. The branches range from 2,900 square feet to 4,000 square feet.

Bethpage, formed originally to serve employees of the former Grumman Corp., is now open to all Long Islanders and has undertaken an aggressive branch roll out program. Since then, Bethpage has grown from nine offices to 17 and now has assets of more than $3 billion and more than 139,000 members.

"As part of an aggressive growth strategy and to better serve our membership, we desired to open new branches within communities where our members live and work,'' said Anthony Edelman, Assistant Vice President-Support Services at Bethpage. "We wanted to implement a standardized design plan that was functional, inviting, and aesthetically pleasing and JRS understood this."

"Our base design has remained constant since 2004, and whether it was a build out of a storefront shell, renovation of an existing branch, or new construction, the JRS team has been professional, dependable and creative," Edelman said, noting that two noteworthy projects undertaken by JRS were the Massapequa ground-up build and Bethpage's main office renovation.

At Bethpage's 20,000-square-foot main office, JRS and the credit union's contractor accomplished a renovation in three phases over a six-month "live" construction period. Work was completed without closing the location or adversely having an impact on members or employees.

JRS' designs also have proved popular among Bethpage's members, said Edelman. "Members have commented positively on the selection of colors and materials, and the manner in which they were used," he said, noting that the credit union has provided more than a dozen members with information about the manufacturers of the materials that were used in the branches.

About Bethpage Federal Credit Union

Bethpage is a full-service, cooperative financial institution offering the lowest or no fees on products and services, the highest interest on deposits, and the lowest rates on loans to more than 139,000 members nationwide. Back to School: NAMI Education Classes Starting for Families of People with Mental Illness; Some Available at VA Facilities

Back to School: NAMI Education Classes Starting for Families of People with Mental Illness; Some Available at VA Facilities

New fall classes geared towards caregivers of individuals living with mental illness.

Arlington, VA (PRWEB) September 8, 2010

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI (http://www. nami. org/)) Family-to-Family Education Program offers new fall classes for caregivers of individuals living with mental illness. Classes are available at a number of locations in communities across the country, including some Department of Veterans Affairs facilities.

Family-to-Family (http://www. nami. org/Template. cfm? Section=Family-to-Family&lstid=605) is a free, 12-week course led by trained family members who are experienced in caring for a loved one with serious mental illness. The course is available in English and Spanish. Each year, NAMI offers approximately 800 Family-to-Family classes in 49 states. Find a local class.

“Many people who come to a Family-to-Family class find it’s the first time that they connect with people who really understand their experiences,” said Mike Fitzpatrick, NAMI executive director. “Participants learn from and support one another as they work to best help their loved ones.”

Family-to-Family participants receive current information on serious mental illness, learn about proven treatments, develop problem-solving skills and communication techniques and explore local community services and supports.

Serious mental illnesses include major depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder and schizophrenia.

Psychiatric Services, the monthly journal of the American Psychiatric Association, recently reported that parents of adult children with mental illness who participate in education and support groups such as those offered by NAMI experience more positive outcomes and fewer burdens than those who do not. Results of a randomized trial by Lisa Dixon, M. D., Ph. D. and Alicia Lucksted, Ph. D. of the University of Maryland on the effectiveness of NAMI's Family-to-Family education program also are expected in early 2011.

Stresses associated with caring for a loved one often affect the health and relationships of caregivers themselves. A Caregiving in the U. S. 2009 (http://www. nami. org/template. cfm? Section=Top_Story&template=/ContentManagement/ContentDisplay. cfm&ContentID=90594&lstid=809) study echoed findings in NAMI reports on schizophrenia and depression. In NAMI’s depression survey, 50 percent of caregivers who responded had been diagnosed with depression themselves.

About NAMI
NAMI is the nation's largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness. NAMI has over 1100 state and local affiliates that engage in research, education, support and advocacy.

Learning Components© to Help the Handicapped

Learning Components© to Help the Handicapped

(PRWEB) November 19, 2000

BRONX, NY - November 22 , 2000 Science Academy Software®, a developer of educational software, announced today an upgrade to Learning Components (LC22).

Learning Components, introduced July 2000, are a collection of applets that assist in the delivery of information, testing, tutoring, and evaluation. This upgrade, supports keyboard navigation that will allow the handicapped to be tested, tutored, and assessed without the use of a mouse which may be difficult for them to use. Other features new to LC22 include, "Javascript Extensions" which are webpages that facilitate the copy, printing, or mailing of test results to the mail host.

Use of Learning Components© is a major benefit to educational institutions, training organizations, distance learners, and now the handicapped.

Users, webmasters and educators, can create their own interactive tests, tutorials, or presentations simply by changing parameters to the applets HTML code and adding the content (text, images, sound, etc.). The presentation is handled by the applet at the client via the browser. This is particularly useful to people and organizations who have a website but don't have CGI, server access, or programming resources and who would like to use and expand the richness of the WWW as an educational platform. Users get functionality, an aesthetically pleasing design, ease of use, security, and low cost.

With a little knowledge of HTML, users can create their own tests, tutorials, or presentations on the Web, network or desktop. To use them, users add or change applet parameters in the HTML then add content. This is a low cost alternative for schools and companies for rolling-out their own student/employee training on their website.

To learn more about LC22 and see a samples of their applet/components, visit:

Http://www. scienceacademy. com/lc22 (http://www. scienceacademy. com/lc22)

You will need Windows and a java capable browser. Please note that because of latency issues (connection type and network traffic), the program's performance may vary.

Science Academy Software's Learning Components suite of applets sell for $490 per site/server/cpu.

Gaithersburg, MD (PRWEB) December 29, 2009

On the heels of its remarkable success in alcohol recovery, National Institute For Alcohol Recovery (NIFAR®) is launching the next generation of the Regenerate® program in time for New Year’s resolutions. This updated, digital program is now available online via high-speed streaming audio and downloads for an iPod® or mp3 player. The new Regenerate will help even more problem drinkers by providing immediate, private recovery – anytime or anywhere. NIFAR is also offering free support by expert staff, 24/7, to ensure success.

Dr. Devang Gandhi, board-certified physician in addiction medicine and senior medical advisor to NIFAR stated, “Most people who abuse alcohol do not seek help due to personal embarrassment, disruption of daily routines, and the high cost of rehab which is typically not covered by insurance. Regenerate is specifically designed to overcome all these barriers”. This is unprecedented in available recovery options.

Dr. Thomas Goldbaum, Associate Professor of Medicine at Georgetown University, board-certified cardiologist, and member of the NIFAR medical advisory board noted, “Traditionally, physicians have had few recovery options to recommend without sacrificing patient privacy”, he said. “I believe Regenerate is a highly beneficial program. Now, we can quickly refer it to patients to begin immediate recovery in total privacy”, said Goldbaum.

The Regenerate approach is multi-disciplinary, integrating proven recovery techniques from the latest research in addiction science, motivational coaching, and alternative medicine. Since 2005, the original Regenerate has yielded impressive results by transforming the lives of thousands of people.

The re-launch of Regenerate comes at a critical time. Alcohol addiction is now the number one health problem in the US and in more than forty countries worldwide[1,2]. In fact, an estimated 90 million Americans suffer from alcohol abuse[3]. Further, untreated addiction costs the US $400 billion a year – which is six times the cost of treating heart disease and diabetes and four times the cost of treating cancer[4]. However, Regenerate is reducing this social and economic impact by transforming the lives of thousands of people abusing alcohol.

The NIFAR website has also been redesigned to be a comprehensive resource for alcohol education, recovery and support. It features many video success stories inspired by actual participants. To learn more, please visit www. nifar. com. Or contact Kamran Loghman, Executive Director, at 301.216.2220.

About Regenerate®

This breakthrough self-help and coaching program is designed to combat alcohol addiction from many angles and promote recovery. Regenerate is based on the latest research including neuroplasticity – a retraining of the brain to help reverse alcohol addiction. It may be used as a stand-alone solution or as a complement to current treatment plans such as rehabilitation, psychotherapy, or 12 step meetings to enhance success. All accompanying materials are professionally produced, straightforward, and easy to use – enabling many who are suffering with alcohol addiction to seek sobriety, often for the first time. To learn more about Regenerate, neuroplasticity, and alcohol addiction visit www. nifar. com.

About NIFAR®

NIFAR is an organization of devoted recovery experts and addiction researchers. Its goal is to advance recovery with the latest proven techniques. In addition to Regenerate, NIFAR offers a family support program called Restore® that provides effective tools for loved ones to cope with the challenges of recovery. Also, NIFAR has a fun and informative Youth Awareness program that gives teens vital information to help them make smart decisions. The tone of each program is positive and uplifting, and they all convey enthusiasm for the participant’s future. Further, each daily segment reinforces empowerment, healing, and lasting change. New Site Makes Carbon Footprints Fun (No, Seriously)

New Site Makes Carbon Footprints Fun (No, Seriously)

Like fingerprints, every footprint is unique... especially carbon footprints. No two people produce the same amount of carbon emissions, so to reduce our collective impact on the environment it's important for everyone to understand their personal carbon output. And that's only half the solution - it's equally important to find ways to reduce that footprint, but most people don't know where to start. That's why Portland-based non-profit Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) created www. ShrinkYourFoot. org, a creative new way to make environmental action more accessible and understandable. Designed to educate and empower, the site offers information and resources to help you reduce your environmental impact.

Portland, OR (PRWEB) April 8, 2009

Like fingerprints, every footprint is unique, and that's equally true for carbon footprints. No two people produce the same amount of harmful carbon output each day, so to significantly reduce our collective emissions it's important for each of us to understand our own impact on the environment.

Quantifying one's personal impact is easy, but then what? When it comes to taking action, it can be hard to know how to make a difference, or to understand exactly what constitutes clean, renewable energy and how support for it can make a difference.

That's why Portland-based non-profit Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) created ShrinkYourFoot. org, a new way to creatively, substantively, and humorously address these challenges. Designed as a one-stop resource to make environmental action more accessible and understandable, the site empowers visitors with the knowledge and resources they need to make a positive impact on the world - no matter their individual shade of green.

At ShrinkYourFoot. org, Web users can calculate their personal carbon footprint in realistic terms, and learn answers to questions we all ask:
How do I make sense of my carbon footprint?  Can I easily reduce my carbon footprint? Does it cost a lot of money?  What's a carbon offset? Are they for real?

"Let's face it, carbon calculators and carbon offsets aren't usually sexy or fun," says Margie Gardner, CEO of the Bonneville Environmental Foundation. "But they're essential to make any inroads against greenhouse gas pollution. We created an original Web site to make things more understandable, and make corrective action easier. Everyone can easily see how choices we all make every day impact the environment, whether it's reading gossip blogs, taking a shower, or watching Lost."

What's more, the calculator lets visitors make adjustments over time to track how footprints change as routines change. At ShrinkYourFoot. org, visitors will find more than just a carbon calculator. Animated shorts, games, and plenty of easy-to-understand information about how to be more energy-efficient all add to the fun. Most importantly, ShinkYourFoot. org also offers a way to proactively negate carbon emissions by purchasing carbon offsets (tax-deductible, of course!).

All carbon offsets purchased at ShrinkYourFoot. org are reinvested into the development of new sources of renewable energy, watershed restoration and energy education. For more information about BEF and its environmental programs, please visit www. ShrinkYourFoot. org or www. b-e-f. org.

The site was created pro bono by TEQUILA TBWA. "It's rare that an agency has the opportunity to work with a company whose ambition is nothing short of changing the world," noted Kristi VandenBosch, president of TEQUILA TBWA, the creative advertising agency behind Apple, Visa and Nissan marketing campaigns. "There's a beautiful marriage of creativity and technology on www. ShrinkYourFoot. org; the innovative user experience lets you have fun while taking action."

About BEF:
An entrepreneurial nonprofit, Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) is creating a more sustainable future by investing now in clean energy and fresh water. When customers purchase BEF's independently certified carbon offsets, they support the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the development of new renewable energy facilities. Additionally, their purchase supports long-term watershed restoration and renewable energy education for students and communities nationwide because BEF reinvests its net revenue to fund its 10-year Model Watershed and Solar 4R Schools programs. Since its founding in Portland, Ore. in 1998, BEF has been a pioneer in helping people and companies become better stewards of the environment. Learn more at www. b-e-f. org.

Snow Trails Annual Winter Swap Weekend

Snow Trails Annual Winter Swap Weekend

Ski equipment and accessory swap to benefit the non-profit Snow Trails Ski Patrol.

Mansfield, OH (PRWEB) November 3, 2007

What's better to usher in the winter season but a great sale? Snow Trails and The Snow Trails Ski Patrol bring you the annual Winter Swap, November 9th-11th: Friday: 5:00-9:00pm, Saturday: 10:00-6:00pm, Sunday: 11:00-5:00pm. The event will be held this year as a fund raiser for the Ski Patrol who is a non-profit organization operating in cooperation with Snow Trails. For those that have never attended, picture it as a large Ski & Snowboard Tag Sale.

One Stop Shopping Convenience

Snow Trails will have both new and used equipment for beginner, intermediate, advanced and expert skiers and snowboarders. It's one of the best ways of the season to outfit the entire family.

The event gives skiers and snowboarders a chance to buy, or sell, new or gently used equipment and accessories including: jackets, pants, baselayer, socks, helmets, goggles, poles, boots, bindings and much, much more. Although it is called a "Ski Swap" no "swapping" is required. You do not need something to sell in order to shop at the swap. The event is free and open to the public. The cost to the seller is one dollar per item with 20% of the sale price going to the Snow Trails Ski Patrol. All major forms of payment are accepted including cash, check, or charge. For the best selection, sellers and shoppers should arrive early. The Patrol will also be selling brats and beverages on Saturday starting at 11:00am.

Ski Patrol

The Snow Trails Ski Patrol consists of over 100 dedicated volunteers providing on-hill safety and off-hill education at Snow Trails. They are members of the National Ski Patrol system. Their mission is to serve the skiing public, without charge in the rescue and first aid treatment of the injured, offering this service in a courteous manner, affording the best public relations possible for Snow Trails and the skiing/boarding public.

The National Ski Patrol (NSP) was founded in 1938, and has evolved into one of the largest outdoor-winter rescue organizations in the world. It is composed of more than 28,500 members serving over 600 patrols including volunteer, paid, alpine, snowboard and Nordic throughout the United States and certain military areas in Europe. The NSP membership provides countless years of service and devotion to the skiing community by providing safety education, emergency care, and rescue services.

In 1980, the National Ski Patrol was recognized as a Federal Charter by the United States Congress. This is a coveted endorsement that only a few other American institutions, such as the Red Cross, the YMCA, and the Boy Scouts, have earned. The Charter stipulates the promotion of safety and health in skiing and other outdoor winter recreational activities. The NSP reports directly to Congress.

Snow Trails Ski Resort has been serving Ohio since 1961. There are six chairlifts and two surface lifts serving 13 runs, three terrain parks, and a tubing park on 60 acres.
