The Jewish Fund Awards Mercy Primary Care Center $100,000 Over Three Years for Chronic Disease Management of Hypertensive Patients

The Jewish Fund Awards Mercy Primary Care Center $100,000 Over Three Years for Chronic Disease Management of Hypertensive Patients

Mercy Primary Care Center of Detroit (MPCC) has recently received a grant award of $100,000 over three years from The Jewish Fund for the chronic disease management of hypertension.

Detroit, MI (Vocus) June 19, 2010

Mercy Primary Care Center of Detroit (MPCC) has recently received a grant award of $100,000 over three years from The Jewish Fund for the chronic disease management of hypertension. This grant includes home blood pressure monitoring equipment, medication, imaging services and learning materials for all uninsured hypertensive patients at MPCC.

It is estimated that one out of three American adults has high blood pressure, or hypertension. Having high blood pressure increases one’s chance for developing heart disease, stroke, congestive heart failure and kidney disease. It is more prevalent in African-Americans and particularly high among black women. It is estimated that about 90% of all middle-aged adults will develop high blood pressure in their lifetime.

The grant program at MPCC will consist of four major areas: evaluation, medication, education and self-management. MPCC will provide patients with medication, self-monitoring equipment and educational resources to help them manage their illness for life. Each patient will receive a home monitoring blood pressure cuff to be used every day, which will record daily readings. This cuff can be brought to a patient’s visit and the information downloaded, printed out, and reviewed with the patient to discuss progress toward goals and barriers to self-management. In addition, the grant will also be used to cover the costs of maintenance medication, education materials as well as diagnostic lab and imaging services to monitor heart function and screen for complications.

MPCC is a health center serving the needs of Detroit’s uninsured. Its mission is to provide a medical safety net for uninsured adults who require healthcare services to improve their quality of life. MPCC seeks to eliminate barriers to comprehensive care by providing laboratory, diagnostic testing, limited specialty care, health education, pharmaceuticals and transportation free of charge. MPCC treats the whole person-body, mind, and spirit-rather than an isolated ailment. MPCC is a continuing ministry of Trinity Health.

The Jewish Fund was established in 1997 from the proceeds of the sale of Sinai Hospital and supports health and social welfare needs in the Jewish community and general population in Metro Detroit.

Pearson's MyEducationLab Equips Teachers-in-Training for Successful Careers

Pearson's MyEducationLab Equips Teachers-in-Training for Successful Careers

Versatile Online Program Offers Array of Effective Tools

Boston, MA (PRWEB) April 29, 2009

The global financial crisis, while wreaking havoc on nearly every sector of the US economy, has also underscored the critical need for America's education system to prepare students to compete in a global economy. Indeed, President Obama has made education reform and global competitiveness -- including teaching quality, recruitment and retention -- a key part of his education platform, with $100 billion in federal stimulus funds for education.

Preparing education leaders is the foundation for Pearson's MyEducationLab (http://www. myeducationlab. com/) -- a powerful new online program for pre-service teachers. Pearson, the world's leading education publishing and technology company, is continually investing in groundbreaking learning solutions that make a difference in student progress.

MyEducationLab offers students powerful insight into how real-world classrooms work, plus a rich array of tools that will support them on the journey from college training to the classroom. The innovative, research-based program includes video examples from current classroom teachers and students, allowing college educators to provide important context for the complexities of teaching in today's classrooms.

Preliminary results from teacher educators who helped shape the program show overwhelming approval for MyEducationLab's flexibility and ease of use, with more than 80% of respondents reporting that the product's key components of practice tests, homework assignments with video illustrations and extensive footage of real-life classroom situations as very important to building understanding of the teaching skills needed in today's schools.

"The MyEducationLab video clips were the best asset for my students who have not had experiences in the classroom with students," says Professor Emily Schell of San Diego State University. "Even for those with experiences in the classroom, the focused interviews and clips help them better "see" and understand the concepts and theories presented in the text and class lectures."

MyEducationLab is integrated into 70 leading titles, with online applications to assignments, homework exercises, individualized study plans and resources easily accessible for teachers and students. Pearson's Teacher Education & Development Group worked with more than 240 faculty reviewers and Pearson authors to create MyEducationLab.

"I have found MyEducationLab to be a wonderful resource to my classes," says Cherie Roberts of Bloomsburg University. "The videos provide the visual aspect needed for pre-service teachers to better understand how to teach a given concept."

Pearson's support of teachers covers the continuum with content and services that represent the research and knowledge of America's leading education researchers. Among the company's respected higher education imprints are Allyn & Bacon and Merrill, which offer print, digital and hybrid tools and resources that effectively blend academic research and practical applications for today's K12 educators and for the students who will be tomorrow's teachers.

Pearson's research-based professional development services for teachers include Learning Teams, an evidence-based, collaborative model that brings together teachers to learn from each other, refine their skills to improve student performance and self-assess their progress; and the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP), a groundbreaking approach to teaching English language learners that uses "sheltered instruction" to teach subjects such as math, science or social studies in a way that makes the concepts easier to understand, while at the same time strengthening a student's academic English language development.

PatientOS Urges Trade Ministers to Encourage Adoption of Open Source Solutions at the Sixth Annual Consul Program for New Jersey Life Sciences

PatientOS Urges Trade Ministers to Encourage Adoption of Open Source Solutions at the Sixth Annual Consul Program for New Jersey Life Sciences

The Center for International Business & Education hosted a unique event connecting consular officials from over 20 countries with business, education and government officials for collaboration and commerce. One the speakers on the electronic medical records panel, Greg Caulton, a Principal at PatientOS Inc. urged trade ministers to leverage the PatientOS Open Source EMR solution.

Branchburg, New Jersey (PRWEB) October 17, 2009

The Center for International Business & Education at Raritan Valley Community College hosted a unique event connecting consular officials from over 20 countries with business, education and government officials for collaboration and commerce.

One the speakers on the electronic medical records panel, Greg Caulton, a Principal at PatientOS Inc. urged trade ministers to leverage the PatientOS Open Source EMR solution. The majority of members from 20 different countries had heard of open source and understood the advantage local companies could have from leveraging an electronic health record free of licensing costs.

PatientOS Inc. principal Greg Caulton spoke of the events success. "I was thrilled to participate at this event. I spoke one on one at length with representatives spanning the globe, from the Mexican Trade Ministry, to the Consulate General of the Czech Republic. Our message is simple. We want international businesses, large and small to implement our software into their healthcare institutions without the burden of exorbitant licensing fees. We can provide the clinical analysts and software support services to ensure they are successful. By using PatientOS these countries can implement an advanced hospital system at a fraction of the cost of developing or purchasing an equivalent system".

Luncheon was served at the Trump National Country Club where acclaimed international speaker Camille Sailer and The Apprentice season four winner Randal Pinkett spoke at the event of the local entrepreneurial spirit and support systems New Jersey had to offer international businesses.

At the event Kwangsun Suh, a scientific director at Hackensack university medical center spoke of the complexities in gathering information from disparate electronic records, each serving specialists with unique needs. Each system written with software that is unable to communicate with the other. Greg Caulton spoke of how PatientOS can address this prevalent interoperability problem.

"PatientOS is unique in its capability to support significant differences in the user interface for all specialty clinics and users. Rather than writing code for each solution we provide a common data model and a common set of tools that allows analysts to configure the EMR to meet the needs of the clinicians," said Greg. "By putting control into the hands of the people gathering requirements the system is built quicker and with fewer errors. This coupled with a strong software architecture and our implementation of standards has positioned PatientOS to compete with commercial systems on both cost and quality."

Healthcare Surveys Contribute to Improved Healthcare Worker Productivity

Healthcare Surveys Contribute to Improved Healthcare Worker Productivity

Healthcare facilities are finding additional benefits when using automated point-of-care survey technology. In addition to increased response rates, Opinionmeter’s healthcare clients are reporting increased healthcare worker productivity.

San Leandro, CA (Vocus) July 2, 2010

Opinionmeter (http://www. opinionmeter. com (http://www. opinionmeter. com)) is a leading provider of technologically advanced health care satisfaction survey tools for gathering and measuring patient satisfaction at the point-of-care. The company offers a number of innovative, interactive devices that allow its clients to capture real-time patient satisfaction feedback immediately following service administration. This immediate feedback enhances a healthcare worker’s productivity with real-time examples of positive or ineffective patient interactions.

With more than 40 years of experience in the market research industry, Opinionmeter has worked with countless companies worldwide in addition to the healthcare sector, including retail, financial services, entertainment, leisure, transportation, education, conferences & trade shows, government and many more. One of Opinionmeter’s core competencies is developing effective patient satisfaction healthcare surveys in conjunction with medical facilities around the world to improve patient service recovery and healthcare worker productivity.

According to John Maio, Manager of Diagnostic Imaging at Kaiser Permanente, Oakland Medical Center, "The Radiology Department is the first department at the Oakland Medical Center to use the Opinionmeter. Radiology uses the Opinionmeter to survey staff and members about satisfaction and customer service. The Opinionmeter is a positive tool to help reinforce positive behavior and motivate change… The Opinionmeter helps us set and achieve our customer service goals. I’m wild about it."

The company’s real-time patient surveys allow healthcare facilities to collect point-of-care feedback quickly and efficiently. Capturing real-time patient satisfaction survey alerts enable instant customer service recovery - providing immediate improvement in the patient experience. With patient feedback becoming a clear priority at healthcare organizations around the country, patient surveys are rapidly evolving into a standard component of any hospital stay, doctor’s office or clinic visit.

Deployment of the patient satisfaction survey is through a variety of handheld portable devices, such as personal digital assistants (PDAs), mobile tablet surveys and mobile phones. Additionally, in an outpatient clinic or doctor’s office setting, the health care satisfaction survey, loaded on a freestanding unattended touch screen kiosk, may be the most appropriate method for self-administered patient entry. More infrequently, online healthcare surveys are sent to the patient’s email address for response at their earliest convenience. However, Opinionmeter remains steadfast in its philosophy that capturing the primary response data at the point-of-care provides the most unbiased insight into a patient’s subjective attitudes, evaluations and reactions immediately following a specific point-of-care event.

Opinionmeter’s resource library of automated reporting tools empowers hospital staff with the necessary information to have a positive impact on patient satisfaction outcomes and concurrently improve healthcare worker productivity. Continuous feedback provides detailed trend analysis, along with low-score alert coverage, to monitor patient satisfaction levels and staff productivity gains over time.

Physician Group Practices Continue to Choose MicroMD®

MicroMD is the Practice Management Software of Choice

BOARDMAN, Ohio (PRWEB) December 14, 2005 –

December 14, 2005 – Microsys Computing, Inc., developer of the award-winning MicroMD® practice management software, announced today that it achieved 44 new sales to physician groups from September through November 2005. The group practices that recently selected MicroMD are located in 20 states and include 19 different medical and surgical specialties.

“Physicians and practice administrators continue to have confidence in our software development and support staff and in our excellent resellers across the country,” said Ajit Kumar, Ph. D., president, Microsys. “Our recent sales success, combined with our 95 percent customer retention rate, demonstrates that MicroMD is a solid solution for physician groups seeking a full-featured, dependable and affordable practice management system.”

Why are so many physician groups choosing MicroMD? Three new Microsys customers offered comments that reflect the opinions of both new and long-standing MicroMD users:

“We searched for a system with state-of-the-art software technology, fast processing speed and in-depth financial reporting. Bonds, administrator, Urology Associates of South Texas, P. A. (www. UAST. com), McAllen, Texas. “MicroMD met all our requirements, and comparable systems we evaluated cost twice as much.” UAST acquired another urology practice in May 2005 and now has seven physicians practicing in five locations. Its physicians are utilizing the group’s radiology oncology center to participate in a national clinical trial, sponsored by the Dana Farber Cancer Institute (www. dfci. harvard. edu), Boston, Mass., to investigate advanced strategies in treating high-risk, early-stage prostate cancer patients with image-guided radiation therapy, androgen suppression therapy and chemotherapy.

NLE, of Orem Utah, is pleased to announce a partnership between NLE and Fiberlink Communications of Blue Bell, Pennsylvania. Mobile NAC™ uses the Extend360 Mobility Platform™ to provide the four basic functions of Network Access Control: Policy Management, Endpoint Monitoring and Assessment, Quarantine and Enforcement, and Remediation.

Orem, Utah (PRWEB) March 25, 2008

NLE, of Orem Utah, is pleased to announce a partnership between NLE and Fiberlink Communications of Blue Bell, Pennsylvania. Fiberlink allows Enterprise to reduce resource strain and costs of mobility by Consolidating Access into a Single Software Solution. "Put simply ", says Eric Winegar, President of NLE, "The Mobile NAC solution from Fiberlink is a cost effective means to take your corporate laptops out of the Wild and enforces your corporate mobility policies. Mobile NAC™ is the first Network Access Control solution designed specifically for the mobile workforce. "Paper to practice is one of the largest security challenges for a mobile workforce." continued Winegar.

Fiberlink Communications Corporation's, Extend360 solution helps companies reduce their software image footprint by consolidating multiple connection managers into one platform for mobility. Network Access Control, or NAC, is a powerful idea that promises to mitigate the damage done by viruses, hackers and other threats to corporate information. Fiberlink's Mobile NAC™ protects corporate networks from non-compliant endpoints. But it also addresses "the mobile blind spot" by protecting the endpoints themselves and the confidential data on them with "always on" monitoring and remediation.

Fiberlink's Mobile NAC uses the Extend360 Mobility Platform to provide the four basic functions of Network Access Control: Policy Management, Endpoint Monitoring and Assessment, Quarantine and Enforcement, and Remediation.

Fiberlink's Extend360 solution solves three hard-to-balance objectives - saving money, making wireless connectivity easy, and fortifying IT security. Fiberlink can meet the mobility and security needs of IT for everything wireless - roaming, corporate, home, and 3G. This platform is just one more example of our role as a pace-setter in our industry, enabling IT to connect, control, secure and save. 85% of the time a mobile computer is not connected to the corporate network. NLE's Fiberlink solution solves these problems of compliance 100% of the time.

Whether you are maintaining a legacy network, or preparing for consolidation, NLE has the experience, skills and relationship to make your IT projects a success. Contact us today for further information.

StrandVision Digital Signs Help Colleges & Universities Inform Students/Build Community

StrandVision Digital Signs Help Colleges & Universities Inform Students/Build Community

StrandVision LLC (http://www. strandvision. com), a provider of hosted digital signage services, today announced Internet-based digital signs for colleges and universities.

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (PRWEB) June 1, 2006 –-

StrandVision LLC (http://www. strandvision. com (http://www. strandvision. com)), a provider of hosted digital signage services, today announced Internet-based digital signs for colleges and universities. The signs, which can be placed virtually anywhere on campuses, are an efficient way to inform students, faculty and the rest of the community of upcoming events and news, as well as academic, sports and club schedules.

Designed to supplement traditional communications, StrandVision digital signs are low-cost, timely and efficient since they use institutions' existing networks and standard televisions, Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD) or plasma screens to deliver text, graphic and video content. StrandVision digital signage is always available to provide students with the latest information any time of the day or night in student centers, lounges, dorm lobbies, food courts, dining areas, etc.

Recommended signage topics include:

•Upcoming social and sporting events or meetings

•Sports and club competition scores

•Special events

•Guest speakers/presentations

•Dining room menus

•Lecture hall topics/presentations

•Student and faculty recognition

•Registration and other administrative information

•Internships/on-campus recruiting schedules

•Community information

•Local weather and weather advisories

•Breaking news

“We’ve found that digital signs are a great way to communicate with students and faculty,” explained Mike Strand, StrandVision founder and CEO. “Digital signs are passive and can be ubiquitous, and students are oriented towards televisions and other electronic media. A side benefit is that digital signs can build community inside and outside of the campus walls with the Web-based distribution option. They’re a great way to reach day and non-traditional students to connect them with the larger community.”

Easy to set up – Simple to administer

StrandVision digital signage takes an innovative approach by delivering information over the Internet. The network is easy to set up and maintain. It requires a personal computer with Internet access to act as a server that distributes information to televisions, LCD or plasma screens over the organization’s existing cable television or local area network. Typically, campus computer or technical support staffs handle the installation in less than an hour if the display technology is already in place.

The day-to-day administration does not require any technical expertise. Administrators simply log onto the password-protected StrandVision server over the Internet to type in the latest announcements or upload photos and graphics. The entire digital signage system or designated location is updated at the next refresh within minutes. Commented Strand, “With our fill-in-the-form entry system, if you know how to browse the Web, you can do the daily updates on a StrandVision digital signage network.”

The college community is presented with a constantly scrolling text and graphics message loop. It enables them to check locations and times of their activities throughout the day. The StrandVision digital signage system can also be configured to send different messages to different locations and at different times of the day. Some institutions are using digital signs to display dining room menus, or to promote the college and encourage ticket sales in athletics/recreation centers, while others send customized information to different student areas, such as law, engineering or education schools.

StrandVision digital signage for colleges and universities is available immediately from StrandVision and through a national network of resellers and installers. Pricing begins at $54.95/month (annual subscription rate). Installations require a high-speed Internet connection and a personal computer with Web access to develop and/or receive content. A free trial is available at: http://www. strandvision. com/?adduser (http://www. strandvision. com/?adduser).

About StrandVision

StrandVision LLC uses a Web services model to deliver low-cost, high-availability hosted digital signage services to educational facilities and businesses. It is also ideal for medical and dental offices (patient education), banks (video merchandising), industrial distributors (vendor-sponsored advertising), employee break rooms (events and benefits) and other business applications. StrandVision eliminates the need for complex and expensive onsite hardware since it hosts the digital signage service on its servers and delivers content directly over the Internet via standard Web browser technology to televisions and computer displays in subscribers’ offices and businesses. StrandVision’s easy-to-setup and easy-to-update Web-based service enables administrators to maintain and quickly distribute text messages and graphics, including advertisements and video content. StrandVision enhances each company’s customized content with national and local weather and news, stocks and other information of interest. Tim Wakefield, the just-announced Red Sox’ nominee for the 2010 Roberto Clemente Award, and the famous Warner Bros.’ Looney Tunes characters take the field to tribute Tim's masterful knuckleball pitch and to raise funds for Tim’s favorite charity, New England’s Pitching in for Kids.

"Knuckled Under by Wakefield," a Warner Bros.’ animation art limited edition featuring Tim and the characters, is now available at http://www. KnuckledUnderbyWakefield. org (http://www. Tim Wakefield joins an elite group of sports legends including Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, Wayne Gretzky, Derek Jeter and Drew Brees, who have all been featured in a Warner Bros. Looney Tunes limited edition.

Wakefield has been nominated for the Roberto Clemente Award eight times since joining the Red Sox in 1995. The Award is given annually to the MLB player who “best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual’s contribution to his team.” Past winners of the Award include Curt Schilling, Derek Jeter, Cal Ripken Jr. and Willie Mays.

Tim is well known throughout MLB and New England as one of the most charitable players both on and off the field. He is an advocate and active participant of Pitching in for Kids, dedicated to improving the lives of children across the New England region.

“Knuckled Under by Wakefield is a spectacular limited edition that is special to my heart. To have Warner Bros. create a one-of-a-kind piece of art with me and my favorite Looney Tunes characters at Fenway Park is simply amazing,” said Tim Wakefield. “I’m particularly proud that proceeds from Knuckled Under by Wakefield will be going to a great cause through the Pitching in for Kids charity foundation.”

“We are very fortunate to be a part of this special program with Tim and Warner Bros.,” said Carol Troxell, one of the founders of the Pitching in for Kids organization. “We are committed to providing care, education and opportunities for children, and this incredible project is a part of our ongoing efforts in Boston and throughout New England."

"Knuckled Under by Wakefield" combines the talent of ten Warner Bros.’ artists and designers using the traditional hand-drawn and hand-painted process of animation, making this art truly exceptional. Animation art, recognized and exhibited at museums and galleries worldwide, is a popular and respected American art form. Characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Wile E. Coyote, Road Runner and Tweety are American icons that have entertained audiences for generations.

Each "Knuckled Under by Wakefield" fine art lithograph and hand-painted cel limited edition is personally signed by Tim, custom framed, and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. The blogosphere is buzzing with rave reviews for the world's first competitive Internet reality show, "The Next Internet Millionaire (http://www. nextinternetmillionaire. com)." Debuting last Friday at http://www. NextInternetMillionaire. com (http://www. NextInternetMillionaire. com), bloggers and fans are universally applauding this web-based reality show that is being hailed as a major breakthrough for online long-form video.

Within just a few days of launching the premiere episode, Joel Comm's "The Next Internet Millionaire" is mentioned on over 60,000 web pages (according to Google) (http://www. google. com/search? hl=en&rls=GGLJ%2CGGLJ%3A2006-32%2CGGLJ%3Aen&q=%22next+internet+millionaire%22+joel), with bloggers around the world sharing their thoughts.

The site shot up the charts on Alexa. com and was the #1626 most popular site on the web on August 18th, beating AmericanIdol. com, CBS. com and NBC. com that day.

Some of the more prolific bloggers who have covered the show include:

Shoemoney (http://www. shoemoney. com/2007/08/17/the-next-internet-millionaire-episode-1/) (Jeremy Schoemaker), who says, "The first episode of The Next Internet Millionaire reality web show has been released. Hats off to Joel for putting this together. The quality is top notch. It takes a lot of balls to jump right in on something like this."

Jim Kukral (http://www. jimkukral. com/creative-marketing-ideas-in-video-form-done-right) (Revenews. com), who wrote, "Joel Comm really nailed it. Very well done. I was worried that it wouldn't come off strong enough, but I must say that it's really, really well done. Congrats to Joel. Worth a watch."

Matt Huggins (http://www. matthuggins. com/the-next-internet-millionaire-episode-1/) stated, "I found the style and format of The Next Internet Millionaire sucking me in almost immediately after it started."

"Over 90% of viewers who have provided feedback support this program and tell us they will be watching each week to watch how it unfolds." Comm continues, "Those kinds of numbers would make any network executive do backflips, and we intend to continue producing a quality program that audiences will find entertaining and educational."

The first in a complete fall season of episodes found twelve aspiring entrepreneurs on location in Northern Colorado where they were taught the principles of Simpleology by Internet marketing legend, Mark Joyner. The cast members consisting of six men and six women were put to the task both individually and as teams.

The individual immunity task gave the contestants five minutes to get to know a randomly selected partner and deliver a one-minute speech indicating why their partner would win the competition. The winner received the HackerSafe tshirt, a symbol of safety and immunity for the entire day.

The team execution challenge was centered on applying Joyner's principles of Simpleology to the creation of a new web page that would serve to reach a new market with the Simpleology program. The winning team received a lifetime subscription to all Simpleology products. The losing team joined Joel Comm, Mark Joyner and Cresta Pillsbury (of HackerSafe) in the Judgment room, where two team members were targeted for elimination.

With varying levels of online experience, the contestants will continue to learn from some of the world's leading Internet marketing experts, including Marlon Sanders, Brad Fallon and Perry Marshall. Episode two to be released soon will feature Armand Morin, a man whose Internet business has made over $25 million dollars.

The Next Internet Millionaire leverages the new media in ways that the major television networks have been unable to accomplish. Viewers may watch the show at their leisure by visiting the site at http://www. NextInternetMillionaire. com (http://www. NextInternetMillionaire. com). This 24/7 distribution model, accompanied by programs of variable length, demonstrate how original long-form entertainment is rapidly transitioning to the web.

Auxiliarists Awarded Silver Medal for Lifesaving

Auxiliarists Awarded Silver Medal for Lifesaving

Three United States Coast Guard Auxiliarists, the uniformed volunteer component of Team Coast Guard, are the recipients of the Association for Rescue at Sea's (AFRAS) Silver Lifesaving Medal.

(PRWEB) July 23, 2005

Three United States Coast Guard Auxiliarists, the uniformed volunteer component of Team Coast Guard, are the recipients of the Association for Rescue at Sea's (AFRAS) Silver Lifesaving Medal.

Richard Runde of Cedarburg, WI, Jay Croy and Linda Croy of East Grand Fork, MN were crew members on an Auxiliary facility providing a safety patrol for the 33rd Annual Leech Lake Regatta and Sailboat Race held in August 2004.

The weather took a turn for the worse, and the crew of the sailing vessel Wind Dancer became hypothermic, and were unable to sail their vessel. The Auxiliarists took the 25 foot Wind Dancer in tow, under extremely dangerous conditions, where winds were 15-20 knots, with gusts to 30-35 knots and the seas were topping 5 feet.

Both the crew of the Wind Dancer and the Auxiliary facility returned safely to port.

AFRAS (http://www. afras. org (http://www. afras. org)) tries to award yearly a Gold medal (given to Active Duty or Reserve members of the Coast Guard), a Silver medal (for Coast Guard Auxiliarists) and a AMVER award (for commercial vessels who are part of the Automated Mutual-assistance Vessel Rescue System). The Silver award was established in February 2000, and only one other Auxiliarist, Henry 'Cleve' Chandler has been awarded this prestigious award (in 2002).

The award ceremony will be held in Washington, DC in early October.

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is composed of uniformed, non-military volunteer's who assist the Coast Guard in all of its varied missions, except for military and direct law enforcement. These men and women can be found on the nation's waterways, in the air, in classrooms and on the dock, performing Maritime Domain Awareness patrols, safety patrols, vessel safety checks and public education.

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary was founded in 1939 by an Act of Congress as the U. S. Coast Guard Reserve and re-designated as the Auxiliary in 1941. Its 30,000 members donate millions of hours annually in support of Coast Guard missions.

Important News for All California Drug and Alcohol Counselors, Educators, Teachers, and Clinical Supervisors

Important News for All California Drug and Alcohol Counselors, Educators, Teachers, and Clinical Supervisors

Federico C. Grosso, DDS, PhD, MFT, BCFE announces an important and impacting piece of information regarding the practice of drug and alcohol counseling in California. This information applies to all counselors, educators, clinical supervisors, and teachers. It is based on the legal standing of drug and alcohol counselors: not being licensed, thus certain important laws do not apply to them.

Santa Barbara, CA (PRWEB) April 22, 2006

Dr. Grosso serves as an expert witness in malpractice actions involving drug and alcohol counselors and has published the foundational academic textbook on the legal and ethical standard of care for California drug and alcohol counselors. Throughout his court cases, Attorneys ask Dr. Grosso an important question involving drug and alcohol counselors when he is testifying in court cases. He is asked if drug and alcohol counselors are legally mandated to report child abuse, elder/dependent abuse, Tarasoff situations, and are they permitted to breach confidentiality for suicide? His answer is: “No, because they are not legally identified by California law as mandated or permitted reporters.”

For California drug and alcohol counselors, this is an important and impacting issue: if they breach the client’s confidentiality without their authorization, they can be sued for malpractice and they will likely lose their case. This is true because drug and alcohol counselors are not given legal protection under the law since they are not listed as mandated or permitted reporters of harm to self or others. How can drug and alcohol counselors protect themselves in these situations?

Dr. Grosso recommends that first, the clinician use an informed consent document. California law requires drug and alcohol counselors to use one with every client. The Chamber’s positions must be based on principles that will continue Clarke County’s economic success and the quality of life our residents enjoy and businesses demand.

Thoughtful economic development is necessary and should be expanded.

Agritourism is necessary for Clarke County to maintain its quality way of life.

· It is critical that local government be responsive to the needs of the citizens, businesses, agriculture and accountable for business success.

The Math Behind Keeping Forests Healthy

The Math Behind Keeping Forests Healthy

In its new micro-documentary, "The Forester," The Futures Channel shows students how Tami Sobol, a forester, uses math and science in her work. Watch the movie: http://www. thefutureschannel. com/dockets/hands-on_math/the_forester/

Burbank, CA (PRWEB) March 19, 2007

It's spring in Washington's Cascade Mountains and Tami Sobol is loading up her truck to start the day. She has her chainsaw, snowshoes, bear spray and an ax. She even has a space blanket "just in case I have to spend the night some place." Her office? The forest.

The Futures Channel's latest micro-documentary introduces students to Sobol, a forester for the Plum Creek Timber Company, who manages the acres of trees the company uses to produce lumber. "Having a healthy forest is very important," she explains. "We want to leave the biggest, best-growing trees with the fullest and greenest crowns." By doing so, she says, those "parent" trees produce seeds that become good, younger seedlings.

Often described as video field trips, the movies on The Futures Channel's website introduce students to careers that they may know little or nothing about. "It's an amazing website," says Melissa Herrera, an educational technology specialist from Pasadena, Texas. "This really gives students an opportunity to see real life jobs and activities that apply to lessons they are learning."

In the five-minute movie, "The Forester," Sobol stresses that being a forester requires her to use everything from ratios and proportions to percents and multiplication. "As a forester you're responsible for managing our forests for years to come. A forester does everything from deciding which trees should be left, what trees should be harvested," she explains. The very best thing about her job as a forester, she says, is that "the decisions I make guarantee that we'll have forests a hundred years from now when I have grandkids."

Since 1999, with an emphasis on science, technology, engineering and math, The Futures Channel has found ways to make these subjects engaging while giving students a context and application for what they're learning in the classroom. Beth Blatt, a teacher from Cody, Wyoming, is enthusiastic about the resources. "I have just discovered TheFuturesChannel. com and love it! I can't thank them enough for creating such a wonderful resource for teachers and students. My students were fully engaged and want more!"

 PRESS RELEASE

Interactive Hugging ~ Latest Web-based Communication Systems

San Diego, California: Design Systems R&D, Inc. has applied for patents that will enable children to send and receive "hugs" from their favorite TV and Internet characters while playing with their online stuffed toys and teddy bears. Grandparents will soon be able to give and receive hugs while video teleconferencing with their children and grandchildren. Businesspersons across the globe will "shake hands" on e-agreements. Military personnel will truly stay "in touch" with their families. Shut-ins and the elderly may "visit" Las Vegas and partake in a live "real" game of blackjack ~ and later interact with their favorite shows or purchase gifts while touring their favorite shops.

The extreme importance of human touch and hugging is well documented, and yet our ability to give and receive "hugs" and interactive touching is missing from our web-based and other remote communication systems. The applied for U. S. patents cover Internet, interactive TV, and phone-linked stuffed animals, dolls, toys, devices, games, and the associated new dimensions in educational, entertainment, informational programming, and commerce methods. The company is licensed to file for worldwide patent applications.

Craig L. Linden, president of Design Systems, believes these exciting physically interactive communication methods will become a significant part of the World Wide Web and interactive television's bright future. The company's goals are to help transform today's limited person-to-computer and virtual reality interactions into real-time human interactions and to become a leader in these new millennium communication systems. The company is seeking to develop strategic industry partnerships to further develop the technologies and worldwide market potential.

Physicist Releases New Book

Physicist Releases New Book

The third edition of Phenomenal Physics by J. Russell Harkay Ph. D., has been released this week, bringing a friendly approach to physics education to learners from Elementary School to College. Contains well over one hundred experiments and two hundred photos.

Keene, NH (PRWEB) May 13, 2006

Dr. J. Russell Harkay, Keene, New Hampshire resident and chairman of the physics department at Keene State College released his newest book, Phenomenal Physics, this week. The book is a look at all the different aspects of physics, from simple sliding blocks to quantum mechanics, written in an easy-to-understand manner, for children through adults. The book also contains well over one hundred experiments that can be performed with materials that may be found around the house and hundreds of pictures.

“I took a sabbatical several years ago to write such a book only to be "scooped" by three other authors. Those books are among the most widely used in high schools and colleges to this day.” explained the author, “Three years later, I have expanded upon this initial foray into writing by developing scores of exercises, accompanying textual material, and homework questions. The finished product is the Third Edition of my text.”

The Third Edition of this book is greatly expanded from the earlier second edition with over one hundred additional pages. “Phenomenal Physics” uses the guided inquiry approach to learning, a teaching method in which the reader becomes the scientist, as they explore questions through doing experiments. Question banks have also been added, allowing the learner to test their newfound knowledge. The explanations and the experiments are also unique in that they are presented in a very informal manner, using humor and a light-hearted approach to learning.

“Learning about physics can truly be a phenomenal exciting experience.” explained Harkay, “You have to get off the couch to do it with this book, though.”

Phenomenal Physics has its own website, at www. phenomenalphysics. com, where people can learn more about the book or purchase a copy. The book was edited by James Maynard, another New Hampshire resident and author of the book “The Light of Alexandria,” on the history of the first 1,000 years of science in Greece and Rome (www. lightofalexandria. com).

Netop Remote Control 9.2 Offers the Next Generation of Remote PC Management With "Out of Band" Control of Computers

Netop Remote Control 9.2 Offers the Next Generation of Remote PC Management With "Out of Band" Control of Computers

Upgrade to Top Remote Control Software Features Support for Intel vPro (iAMT), Optional Secure Web-Based Connection and Support for 64-bit Windows Versions

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) October 15, 2008

Netop, a leading provider of software solutions for desktop management, unified communications, advanced training and instruction, today launched an update of its Netop Remote Control. Now with support for Intel's vPro and Active Management Technology (iAMT), IT administrators can control computers remotely easier, safer, faster and more securely than ever before.

One of the first solutions available that takes full advantage of the Intel vPro-Technology (iAMT) range of functions, Netop Remote Control 9.2 allows IT administrators to access a computer equipped with iAMT even when it's switched off -- as long as it is connected to a power source and a network. This means that they can conduct maintenance on PCs outside of business hours or when the operating system has failed. With this new functionality, IT administrators can power a computer on or off, enter and change BIOS settings or install an operating system from the Guest computer.

"Many companies already have computers equipped with Intel vPro and Active Management Technology, but are not yet able to take advantage of this new technology," said Kurt Bager, Netop CEO. "Now with Netop Remote Control 9.2, companies can maximize their investment in this innovative functionality by expanding their remote maintenance capabilities."

Faster and Easier Connections With Netop WebConnect

Netop Remote Control 9.2 also offers organizations faster, easier, secure remote access. A new add-on module, Netop WebConnect, allows IT administrators to easily connect to any Host computer no matter where they are. Netop WebConnect does not use third-party servers, giving a company total ownership of its own data and security. Using Netop Web Connect, IT administrators can establish connections through the Internet and beyond network borders, without having to make security-critical changes to firewalls, routers or proxies.

High-Speed Connections Now Possible With Improved HTTP

Now with a newly designed HTTP protocol implementation, Netop Remote Control 9.2 allows companies to increase data transfer speed from two to 10 times, depending on the task and connection. The upgrade is fully compatible with older versions of Netop Remote Control. However, the maximum connection speed can only be attained with the new version.

Expanded Support for Windows 64-bit Platforms

When doing remote maintenance over the Internet, IT administrators will also discover that Netop Remote Control 9.2 is up to 10 times faster than before and provides full support for all 64-bit Windows versions. In addition to the Guest and Host modules, this includes the security server, the name server and the gateway. Based on just one application, Netop Remote Control provides access to all leading platforms - including Windows, Windows CE, Linux, Mac, Solaris and OS/2.

Netop Remote Control 9.2 is available now from Netop partners. For more information about Netop's software solutions for desktop management; unified communications and collaborations (UCC); and advanced education and teaching, visit http://www. netop. com (http://www. netop. com).
