SunGard's Ambit Helps Finter Bank to Deliver Fair Relationship Banking

Finter Bank Zurich, a Swiss private bank providing investment advisory services and portfolio management to private clients, has completed its implementation of SunGard’s Ambit Apsys Private Banking solution.

(Vocus) January 26, 2010

Finter Bank Zurich, a Swiss private bank providing investment advisory services and portfolio management to private clients, has completed its implementation of SunGard’s Ambit Apsys Private Banking solution. The solution was selected and implemented to help Finter Bank deliver its Fair Relationship Banking model – an approach aimed at enhancing Finter Bank’s knowledge and understanding of its clients and their needs as well as strengthening its client offerings.

Finter Bank prides itself on understanding its clients’ needs and seeing things from their point of view. It is continuously evaluating ways to enhance client service and service quality, improve operational efficiency and optimize its infrastructure to support new business growth. Finter required a solution that would help it improve business process efficiency, provide a single view of the client and accommodate the integration of multiple sites, including its Nassau subsidiary. As a result of its recent acquisition of Bank Hugo Kahn, Finter Bank had a requirement to consolidate multiple systems onto a single platform. Finally, the bank wanted to complete the implementation in an ambitious time frame of only six to seven months. After an evaluation of leading providers, Finter chose SunGard’s Ambit Apsys private banking solution.

Roger Dürig, chief operating officer of Finter Bank Zurich, commented:"SunGard’s Ambit Apsys helps us gain a more integrated, well-rounded view of our clients. The solution also separates client data from the operational data store, which is a key requirement for Finter Bank and optimizes straight-through processing (STP) for key processes."

Daniel Bardini, president of SunGard’s Ambit Apsys business unit, commented: "SunGard’s Ambit Apsys private banking solution provides Finter Bank with the tools to help it streamline its operational processes, improve customer-centricity across clients and provide targeted services, helping the bank meet client needs accurately and efficiently. By consolidating these capabilities on a single platform, we are able to help Finter Bank improve client service, while providing a lower total cost of ownership. We’re pleased with this successful implementation.”

Greenloons Joins Forces with Rainforest Alliance in Sustainability

Greenloons Joins Forces with Rainforest Alliance in Sustainability

Organizations working together to promote ecologically and socially responsible best practices for sustainable tourism businesses.

Washington, DC (PRWEB) January 18, 2011

With over 900 million people traveling annually, tourism is the world’s largest service sector industry and ecotourism is its fastest growing sector. In order to protect the surroundings upon which it depends, Greenloons, a family-focused eco travel website based in Washington DC, recently collaborated with the Rainforest Alliance to work towards improving environmental and social standards, as well as protecting wildlife habitats and workers alike.

Greenloons just signed an agreement with the Rainforest Alliance to take steps to encourage businesses in the ecotourism industry to adopt environmentally and socially sound practices by recognizing and promoting those that do. “Families can rest assured that an eco-vacation listed on Greenloons has been certified as one that supports local communities, emphasizes environmental education, sustains conservation efforts, minimizes tourist waste, and respects local cultural traditions,” said Irene Lane, founder and president of Greenloons. “It is our hope that by joining forces, Greenloons and the Rainforest Alliance will be able to better promote transparency in the rapidly growing ecotourism industry, both here in the US and around the world.”

The first of its kind, http://www. greenloons. com is an easy-to-use one stop shop for ecotourism services. The website promotes responsible tourism by providing key information about regional certifications and international standards for ecotourism, third-party certified vacation tour search and reservation capabilities, volunteer conservation effort search, and topical news.

As part of the Rainforest Alliance program, Greenloons works to promote demand for sustainable tourism businesses by educating consumers about the benefits of choosing environmentally and socially responsible vacation packages, as well as the benefits of tourism certification as a tool for conservation and economic development of local communities and businesses.

“We are proud to join forces with an organization so committed to improving the ecotourism industry,” said Thomas Enderlin, Marketing Coordinator at the Rainforest Alliance. “They are a welcome addition to our sustainable tourism program.”

The Rainforest Alliance’s sustainable tourism program helps tourism professionals improve the sustainability of their businesses through training workshops and on-site technical assistance. Initiatives include adopting ecosystem and water conservation measures, reducing energy use, supporting local economies, hiring from within the community and reducing costs.

Congress Congratulates Auxiliary on its efforts for National Safe Boating Week

Congress Congratulates Auxiliary on its efforts for National Safe Boating Week

The U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is receiving kudos from Congress for its efforts in promoting National Safe Boating Week.

(PRWEB) May 28, 2005

The U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is receiving kudos from Congress for its efforts in promoting National Safe Boating Week.

The U. S. House of Representatives has approved a resolution recognizing the Auxiliary, along with the Coast Guard and the National Safe Boating Council, for greater public awareness about the annual campaign, which began May 21 and ends May 27.

Resolution 243, introduced by Rep. Tim Cooper (D-Tennessee), proclaims that the House "supports initiatives for recreational boating, safety education and accident prevention to minimize the number of annual recreational boating fatalities." The resolution, which had 22 bipartisan co-sponsors, lauds the Coast Guard, the Auxiliary and the National Safe Boating Council for their annual efforts to highlight the importance of safe recreational boating. It was approved by a voice vote on May 23.

Auxiliarists from Division 11 in District 8E in Tennessee worked with Rep. Cooper to propose and the resolution and help securing its passage.

The United States has an estimated 78 million recreational

Boaters in the United States and nearly 13 million registered recreational vessels. As HR 243 notes, while the number of recreational boating fatalities has declined by more than half since 1970, thanks to the increased use of life jackets, improved boating safety education, enforcement efforts and safer vessels and equipment manufactured in accordance with Coast Guard standards. But more than 700 people died in recreational boating accidents in 2003. It is estimated more than half those lives could have been saved with the proper use of a personal flotation device.

The North American Safe Boating Campaign began in 1957 as a small, grassroots outreach program. It has evolved into a targeted media effort, stretching across the United States and into Canada. Working with partner organizations, such as the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and the Canadian Safe Boating Council, the campaign aims at spreading a message of boating safety, encourages boater education, and helps to save lives.

The campaign produces a variety of safe boating information intended to enhance and supplement the individual campaigns that take place through groups, associations and organizations across the United States and Canada during National Safe Boating Week.

Boaters desiring a free vessel safety check by the Coast Guard Auxiliary or enrolling in a boating safety course can visit www. cgaux. org.

The complete resolution can be found at http://www. auxpa. org/releases/rbs/HRes243.pdf (http://www. auxpa. org/releases/rbs/HRes243.pdf)

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is composed of uniformed, non-military volunteer civilians who assist the Coast Guard in all of its varied missions, except for military and direct law enforcement. These men and women can be found on the nation's waterways, in the air, in classrooms and on the dock, performing Maritime Domain Awareness patrols, safety patrols, vessel safety checks and public education.

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary was founded in 1939 by an Act of Congress as the U. S. Coast Guard Reserve and re-designated as the Auxiliary in 1941. Its 30,000 members donate millions of hours annually in support of Coast Guard missions.

Numeracy in the Spotlight with the Development of a New Content Theme from Excellence Gateway

Numeracy in the Spotlight with the Development of a New Content Theme from Excellence Gateway

Leading online service for those working in the post-16 learning and skills sector has developed a new content theme to support numeracy.

London, (PRWEB) February 10, 2010

To achieve the ambitious numeracy targets required by the Government, training, resources and support for educators are needed. The new content theme from Excellence Gateway provides background information, links to resources and ideas that will be useful for managers, organisations and educators.

Limitations in staff capacity, lack of numeracy training for teachers, lack of suitable resources and time for preparation challenge the effective delivery of numeracy programmes. However, numeracy can be delivered within a range of contexts and settings as well as in discrete and embedded provision. "Numeracy in the Spotlight" is of interest to all educators and CPD programme coordinators, including those working in the areas of family learning, financial education and health education, as the focus of the theme is on embedded delivery and delivery of numeracy within contexts.

"Numeracy in the Spotlight" includes topics on:
1. Background to numeracy provision and the targets;
2. Using the Excellence Gateway to support numeracy;
3. Assessment and learning;
4. Workforce development and Programmes to deliver numeracy.

Each topic offers useful learning resources (http://www. excellencegateway. org. uk/page. aspx? o=nav-resources) and ideas to help you attain your numeracy targets and deliver effective numeracy teaching. Each of the subsections within the theme provides a brief outline, information and links to resources that can provide you with further information.

For example, Topic 2, offers free resources to support teaching, including : Learning Mathematics in context - part of the Teaching and Learning programme resources, which provide ideas and information on teaching maths within subject and vocational areas; Numeracy learners - which provides a list of websites of useful numeracy resources for use with learners, and Teaching and Learning Mathematics - part of the Teaching and Learning programme, which provides a starting point for maths (numeracy) teachers to engage with other practitioners, providing access to teaching resources (http://www. excellencegateway. org. uk/), CPD, links to research and policy papers.

The Skills for Life (http://www. excellencegateway. org. uk/page. aspx? o=sfl) strategy 'Changing Lives' (2009) made a commitment to provide training and professional development to train and support fully trained teachers to meet the growth in demand for numeracy courses. Topic 4 provides information and resources to support this commitment as well as suggestions for embedding numeracy within family learning, financial education or health education.

Edinburgh's Storytelling Festival Tickets Available Online

Edinburgh's Storytelling Festival Tickets Available Online

The Scottish International Storytelling Festival in Edinburgh launches its 20th anniversary season Friday, October 23. For 2009, tickets and programme details are available online at http://www. edinburghfestivals. co. uk

Edinburgh, Scotland (PRWEB) October 26, 2009

The Scottish International Storytelling Festival in Edinburgh launches its 20th anniversary season this Friday, October 23, as raconteurs from the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the Caribbean join Scotland's best yarn-spinners for 10 days of storytelling sessions, workshops and family events. Such themes as belonging, identity and travel will be visited during the 10-day Festival, the 'Homelands' theme providing a unique window into personal experiences of migration, immigration and the colourful, complex identities emerging from them.

To support the 2009 Year of Homecoming in Scotland, the Storytelling Festival also explores ideas of Scottish diaspora, nurturing cultural exchanges through to personal tales passed down through generations. The Storytelling Festival features 69 events in Edinburgh and across greater Scotland, including a busy education and community programme. Edinburgh Storytelling Festival Tickets (http://www. edinburghfestivals. co. uk/festivals/storytelling? utm_source=prweb&utm_medium=pressrelease&utm_campaign=storytelling) and programming information for the 2009 festival are available online at http://www. edinburghfestivals. co. uk/festivals/storytelling (http://www. edinburghfestivals. co. uk/festivals/storytelling).

In addition to the scheduled events, the Storytelling Festival provides opportunities for future exchanges between Scotland and indigenous cultures, enabling professional storytellers and those interested in oral traditions to meet and share ideas. The Festival is designed to provide audiences with the chance to encounter rich traditions and authentic voices in a memorable live experience.

The Festival is devoted to the art of live storytelling in the improvised traditional style told direct with the engagement of the audience. The story is created between the teller and the listeners giving visitors a warm social experience and a chance to discover different cultures, environments and traditions.

Scottish International Storytelling Festival Director Donald Smith said:

"There are many different layers of experiences, many different strands that people can access, and at the heart of it is the notion of Homelands. You can hear stories from a variety of cultural traditions where the focus is on people who are wonderful storytellers but whose stories are bigger than themselves. They're about a whole cultural experience connected to ideas of journey, migration and emigration.

This is complimented by themed talks with writers and cultural historians who will be speaking about their interests in these ideas. There are also screenings, museum events and storytelling workshops where people can come along and participate in developing their own skills and learn about storytelling traditions."

Highlights of this year's programme include the late-night Festival Club nights and Meet the Storyteller 'taster' events, as well as a series of 10 Authentic Voices evening storytelling performances at the Storytelling Centre in Edinburgh. This includes both people who have remained in their birthplace and those who have branched out into the world and taken elements of their Scottish heritage to other lands, connecting audiences to authentic moments and voices that genuinely relay the ideas related to Homecoming.

Family activities at the Storytelling Centre, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, Museum of Edinburgh and the Scottish Seabird Centre compliment a rich events programme primarily designed for adults and older children. This is highlighted by the Festival's national DIY storytelling initiative, Tell-a-Story Day (on 30th October), which sees school pupils, parents, carers, artists and storytellers putting on their own storytelling and storymaking activities, bringing people of all ages and backgrounds together to share and create tales.

In addition to the Edinburgh-based events, the 'Festival on Tour' programme sees international guests from New Zealand, Australia, USA, Canada and the Caribbean travelling far and wide from the Festival's Edinburgh-hub to deliver first-class performances and interactive workshops in Dundee, Stirling, Oban, Clashmore, Ullapool, Rothesay, Thurso, Glasgow, New Galloway and Insch.

NOTES
The Scottish International Storytelling Festival runs from Friday 23rd October until Sunday 1st November 2009. Tickets are on sale now from the Scottish Storytelling Centre's box office (0131 556 9579 or 0131 473 2000) or online at the Edinburgh Festivals Guide website, http://www. edinburghfestivals. co. uk (http://www. edinburghfestivals. co. uk/?utm_medium=prweb&utm_source=pressrelease&utm_campaign=storytelling).

Bryn Mawr, PA (PRWEB) December 31, 2009

In honor of the nearly 25 million men and women who have served in the armed forces and protected our country's freedom, The American College announced today the creation of a new scholarship fund offering approximately half-a-million dollars in financial aid. This fund is open to any honorably discharged veteran who has served in the U. S. armed forces including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and National Guard.

"Providing military service to our country sometimes requires the heroic men and women of our armed forces to put their own personal career aspirations on hold. As the nation's leading educator of financial service professionals, we want to do our part. This scholarship will provide veterans pursuing a career in financial services with the additional financial support they need to achieve their dreams," stated Larry Barton, Ph. D., President and CEO of The American College.

Veterans are eligible to receive scholarships that could pay their entire tuition, depending on financial need. Half scholarships, subject to a demonstration of financial need, are also available. Members of the armed forces must have been honorably discharged from their branch of service to quality for this financial award. Scholarships are available to both past and more recent veterans.

Once awarded, the scholarship can be applied to any of the designation or degree programs available at The American College. This will help reduce the individual's tuition expenses for as long as he or she remains active in the program.

"Tommy John" Elbow Reconstruction 95% Successful with Grown Teen Pitchers, Study Says

"Tommy John" Elbow Reconstruction 95% Successful with Grown Teen Pitchers, Study Says

A new study presented today at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine’s (AOSSM) Specialty Day in New Orleans, (March 13), found that 95 percent of skeletally mature high school pitchers were satisfied with their "Tommy John" elbow reconstruction surgery. Almost as many, (94.7 percent) returned to competitive baseball.

New Orleans, LA (Vocus) March 13, 2010

A new study presented today at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (http://www. sportsmed. org)'s (AOSSM) Specialty Day in New Orleans, (March 13), found that 95 percent of skeletally mature high school pitchers were satisfied with their “Tommy John” elbow reconstruction surgery. Almost as many, (94.7 percent) returned to competitive baseball.

“Tommy John” surgery is a procedure where a damaged elbow ligament (ulnar collateral ligament or UCL) is replaced with a tendon from elsewhere in the body. The surgery is named for Hall of Fame pitcher Tommy John, who was the first person to have the surgery in 1974. John returned to the major leagues and went on to win 164 games after the surgery. Prior to this historic surgery, a UCL injury was a career-ending injury.

“High school kids have been a grey zone for this surgery,” said Michael J. Angel, MD, of Premier Orthopaedics of Westchester and Rockland. “Obviously, surgeons would avoid surgery on young patients whose growth plates had not closed. But this study can give surgeons the confidence to recommend this surgery to teenage skeletally mature athletes. It also gives the teen and their parents assurance that the surgery should go well.”

In the study, 20 high school baseball pitchers between 16 – 18 years old had the UCL surgery, 19 out of 20 reported being satisfied with the surgery (17 were very satisfied, 2 were somewhat satisfied). Eighteen of the 19 satisfied patients (94.7 percent) reported that they returned to competitive baseball. Of the 19 players, three reported that their highest level of competition was in the minor leagues, another 13 went on to play intercollegiate baseball and three returned to high school baseball.

Overuse injuries account for nearly 50 percent of all sports injuries in middle school and high school students, according to the National Center for Sports Safety. For high school athletes whose growth plates have closed, this study shows that the “Tommy John” UCL reconstruction is a successful option for teenage baseball pitchers who need it.

While the trend of young athletes to specialize in one sport remains controversial, sports medicine has developed innovative surgeries to repair and reconstruct overuse injuries that can result from specialization. However, the bigger problem is prevention of injury. AOSSM and several other sports medicine organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, American Academy of Pediatrics, National Athletic Trainers’ Association, National Strength and Conditioning Association and SAFE Kids USA have teamed together to help prevent overuse injuries in youth athletes. The STOP (Sports Trauma and Overuse Prevention) Sports Injuries campaign includes cutting edge information on sport specific injury prevention techniques for athletes, parents, coaches and healthcare providers. For more details, visit www. STOPSportsInjuries. org.

The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) is a world leader in sports medicine education, research, communication and fellowship, and includes national and international orthopaedic sports medicine professionals. The Society works closely with many other sports medicine specialists, including athletic trainers, physical therapists, family physicians, and others to improve the identification, prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of sports injuries.

Staff Certifications Boost Chicago Area Accounting Firm Capabilities and Services

Staff Certifications Boost Chicago Area Account Firm Capabilities and Services. Porte Brown LLC enhances strategic financial services capabilities with specialized tax and 401(k) planning certifications.

Elk Grove Village, IL (PRWEB) October 21, 2008

Porte Brown LLC (www. portebrown. com), a Chicago-area CPA firm providing accounting, auditing, tax preparation services, and technology solutions, announced the achievement of advanced credentials by two of its staff. Kelley Krowczyk, CPA, Tax Manager, has earned a Master's of Science in Taxation (M. S.T.) after completing a rigorous 2-year program offered through Northern Illinois University. In addition, Linda Stuart, Plan Administrator, has earned certification as a Qualified 401(k) Administrator (QKA) issued by the American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries (ASPPA).

Both accomplishments further Porte Brown's ability to provide specialized accounting and financial services, like strategic tax planning and 401(k) administration, to businesses and individuals throughout the Chicago area, DuPage County, and Cook County.

"Earning my MST was more than just a matter of keeping up with tax code," explains Kelley Krowczyk. "Strategic tax planning is a specialized field that requires intense training and ongoing education to deliver exceptional performance to our clients."

She continued, "It's a real pleasure to work for a progressive firm like Porte Brown because they appreciate how specialized knowledge can translate to client benefits. Not every CPA firm can say that." She adds, "My role as a Strategic Tax Manager is to identify opportunity for tax savings that are often overlooked by other firms - a service we recently provided for a new client in which we identified 5 areas of tax savings that their previous accounting firm missed."

Linda Stuart's recent QKA certification is also a natural outgrowth of Porte Brown's progressive view of client relationships. According to Linda, "I've been involved with 401(k) planning since I began my career with Porte Brown seven years ago. Completing the QKA certification requirements allows me to assist our clients in the administration of their 401(k) retirement plans. Plus, we can provide businesses of all sizes a level of 401(k) planning and consulting typically available only to large corporations."

American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA) Awards $2.6 Million for Brain Tumor Research

American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA) Awards $2.6 Million for Brain Tumor Research

The American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA) awarded $2.6 million in the 2008-2009 fiscal year - the largest amount ever granted in one year during the organization's 35-year history - to support adult and pediatric tumor research throughout the United States and Canada.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) June 2, 2008

The American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA) awarded $2.6 million in the 2008-2009 fiscal year - the largest amount ever granted in one year during the organization's 35-year history - to support adult and pediatric tumor research throughout the United States and Canada.

The funding includes Research Fellowships awarded to young, talented scientists working to further decode the origins of specific brain tumors, and ultimately, to find new and effective treatments. Each Fellow will receive $80,000 over a two-year period. In addition, nine grants ($50,000 each) were awarded to scientists investigating promising laboratory research for potential further study and eventual clinical (patient) use. Another 10 awards were granted to outstanding medical students. They will each receive $2,500 stipends allowing them to work alongside prominent brain tumor researchers.

"Through its research awards, ABTA is encouraging scientists to enter or remain in the field of brain tumor research," said ABTA Executive Director Naomi Berkowitz. "This is critical as brain tumor research is evolving at a rapid pace. Today's scientists are studying the cellular structure of brain tumors toward developing future, successful treatments."

"We are hopeful that the research we fund today will lead to more effective treatments, better delivery methods, and a greater understanding of the causes of brain tumors," said ABTA Board President Michael Sharkey. "We are often asked: 'How is ABTA making a difference?' We simply need to look at the 360,000 people in the United States who are living with a brain tumor. They are proof that progress is being made through research."

Founded in 1973, ABTA seeks to eliminate brain tumors through research while meeting the education and social service needs of brain tumor patients, their families and caregivers.

Each fall, ABTA requests applications for its annual research awards. The applications are then evaluated by the organization's prestigious 21-member Scientific Advisory Council, which includes some of the nation's most prominent neurosurgeons, neuro-oncologists and neuroscientists. The council makes funding recommendations to the ABTA Board of Directors based on the quality of the individual applicants, their training programs, and research projects.

BITTERSWEET MOMENTS

Questions and answers to parenting and life issues

WILMETTE, ILLINOIS - When authors Derek and Gail Randel M. D. were confronted with a big decision involving their 15-year-old son, they had no choice but to follow their hunches and instincts. ÒWe were frightened and felt we had no further options at home. We acted on blind faith,Ó the couple confessed. Bittersweet Moments is their latest book following The Parent Manual, Derek and Gail using a question and answer format give parents much to consider.

ÒParent Smart From The HeartÓ is the name of their program that teaches to parent from inspiration rather than frustration. ÒBy changing how we respond to different issues,Ó the authors write, Òyour children will also change how they respond. Our goal is to help you enjoy your childrenÉÓ Drawing on their actual experiences, the couple designed easy-to-follow techniques to enhance and develop parent-child relationships.

Bittersweet Moments provides ample tools and resources for parents. Particularly, it empowers parents while teaching them effective ways to respond to various issues on parenthood, such as, why do we invite strangers into our childrenÕs bedroom? Issues such as television, instant messaging, and the Internet are addressed. Ã’We have taken two programs, Love and Logic and Jack CanfieldÕs Self-Esteem Seminars and combined them with our program to come up with Parent Smart From The Heart. We are helping parents before and after they get to the point of frustration. Parenting can be and should be fun,Ó the couple explains.

The authors also give emphasis on the importance of love and respect in building solid relationships. Ã’In our home, our message of love is felt while allowing our children to live with their decisions, regardless if these decisions were right or wrong. This is accomplished without yelling or feeling like weÕre walking on egg shells.Ó

Derek Randel holds a Master degree in secondary education and an economics degree from the University of Michigan, He taught high school and middle school for 12 years and was nominated for a Disney American Teacher Award. He recently was seen on Fox News ChannelÕs Ã’The OÕReilly Factor.Ó

Gail Randel is a practicing anesthesiologist and has spoken nationally on various medical issues. She fervently believes that love, touch, and communication skills are the keys to wellness and effective parenting.

25th Anniversary of Tatyana Mamonova's Exile: Woman and Earth's Press Conference and Exhibition at Corinthia Nevskij Palace Hotel, St. Petersburg, Russia July 20, 2005

25th Anniversary of Tatyana Mamonova's Exile: Woman and Earth's Press Conference and Exhibition at Corinthia Nevskij Palace Hotel, St. Petersburg, Russia July 20, 2005

Internationally renown democratic leader, artist, journalist and poet Tatyana Mamonova, exiled from Russia for establishing the first NGO promoting women's human rights and a peaceful and sustainable planet, will be the featured speaker and artist at the beautiful 5 star Corinthia Nevskij Palace Hotel in the center of where it all began -- St. Petersburg, Russia. Press Conference starts at 12:00pm noon sharp followed by a reception and exhibition runs from 9 a. m. to 9 p. m. Free admission. Journalists please RSVP as seating is limited.

(PRWEB) July 11, 2005

Tatyana Mamonova will be the featured speaker at an historically significant press conference and exhibition that will be held at the Moscow Conference Rooms 1 and 2 of the Corinthia Nevskij Palace Hotel in the center of St. Petersburg on July 20, 2005 with the press conference starting at noon followed by a reception and the exhibition running throughout the day from 9 a. m. to 9 p. m.

On July 20, 1980, just as the Moscow Olympic Games were to start, the international democratic womenÂ’s leader, journalist, artist and poet, Tatyana Mamonova became the first female dissident exiled from her native St. Petersburg, Russia to Vienna, Austria for providing the first independent forum for Russian and Soviet womenÂ’s voices in the samizdat Woman and Russia Almanac, and for re-igniting the Russian womenÂ’s movement by founding the grassroots NGO that published the samizdat also called Woman and Russia (now called Woman and Earth).

25 years later, Tatyana Mamonova remains in exile but has grown her NGO and publication into a world renown educational, cultural and informational networking and discussion forum that serves as a unique bridge of understanding between East and West by promoting the contributions of Russian women, international solidarity between women and a peaceful and sustainable planet.

A perfect example is the continuation of the samizdat Woman and Russia, now called Woman and Earth Almanac, plus its two daughters -- two new publications which now complete the trilogy — Succes d’estime and Fotoalbum: Around the World. Copies of these publications will be distributed free of charge to participants. In addition to educational media publications, Woman and Earth produces an award winning television series is shown on cable television in the US and organizes film festivals designed to promote productions which empower women and the earth. Woman and Earth’s Sister to Sister Educational Project has organized seven international conferences in a number of venues throughout the world, press conferences, seminars and exhibitions designed to provide gender empowerment strategies currently being implemented or being proposed that can be effectively applied to communities in all corners of the planet, as well as to promote and feature cultural contributions of women. At the local level, Woman and Earth takes a more activist role in identifying the local needs of women and the environment through the development of local chapters in various countries, as well as individual and organizational cooperation. Woman and Earth was an accredited NGO to the UN Habitat Conference that was held in Istanbul Turkey and its Turkish chapter leader helped serve on the local organizing committee. Woman and Earth and Tatyana Mamonova’s mission takes a broad minded view of the meaning of women’s human rights.

The invaluable contributions of Woman and Earth by its thousands of wonderful supporters throughout the years have been led since its inception by the courage, leadership and vision of Tatyana Mamonova, who has been recognized for her outstanding contributions to humanity by her receipt of a number of accolades which include the 2002 Living Legacy Award (past recipients include US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton), 100 Heroines Award, and Femme Magazine ParisÂ’s Woman of the Year 1980 Award. French Journalist Florence Montreynaud recognized Tatyana Mamonova and Woman and EarthÂ’s publication of the first samizdat Woman and Russia Almanac as the most significant event for women in 1979 in her French Encyclopedia on WomenÂ’s contributions of the 20th Century.

Prior to her leadership of the first womenÂ’s NGO in Russia, Tatyana Mamonova was also the first women exhibitor in the non-conformist artist movement. She has exhibited and sold her award winning art in more than 25 countries and has contributed her artistic talents to a number of international human rights organizations as well as causes to help Russian women and women throughout the world. She also often donates proceeds from the sales of her art to benefit Woman and EarthÂ’s projects. Some of Tatyana MamonovaÂ’s exquisite paintings will be on display in a special exhibition set up throughout the day, as well as other documentation of 25 years of Woman and Earth activities.

The Corinthia Nevsksij Palace Hotel, a beautiful five star hotel located in the heart of St. Petersburg is only steps away from TatyanaÂ’s former residence on Pravda (truth) Street where Woman and Russia organizers met and the samizdat was first published, and Aurora Publishers, where Tatyana Mamonova left her prestigious position as a literary journalist working alongside Josef Brodsky. The Corinthia Nevskij Palace Hotel, has again generously offered to serve as host of this special historical Woman and Earth event. Corinthia Nevskij Palace, which is a Woman and Earth Travel Series EditorsÂ’ Choice Select Hotel, was also the host venue and sponsor of Woman and EarthÂ’s 7th International Conference, Film Festival and Exhibition in December 2003. Jazz Artist Liza Lee Releasing Exciting New CD, Anima, with a Personal Mission on January 27, 2009

Jazz Artist Liza Lee Releasing Exciting New CD, Anima, with a Personal Mission on January 27, 2009

Jazz artist Liza Lee's new CD, Anima, is due to be released January 27, 2009, on the Jazz Doll Records label. In 2006 her promising jazz career was taking off with release of her first CD, Scarlet Mark, when 29-year-old Liza suffered a stroke. Liza is back with a new CD reflective of her life altering experience. With a new understanding of the inequities in women's health care, Liza has chosen to donate the proceeds from Anima to The Society For Women's Health Research (SWHR), a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the health of all women through research, education and advocacy.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) January 14, 2009

Jazz artist Liza Lee's new CD, Anima, is due to be released January 27, 2009, on the Jazz Doll Records label. It is an extremely personal CD. In 2006 her promising jazz career as a recording artist, performer and composer was taking off with the breakout critically acclaimed release of her first CD Scarlet Mark, when 29-year-old Liza suffered a stroke. Now, having made a full comeback, Liza (pronounced the same as the famous Minnelli) is back with a new CD reflective of her life altering experience. With a new understanding of the inequities in women's health care by personal experience, Liza has chosen to donate the proceeds from Anima to The Society For Women's Health Research (SWHR), a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the health of all women through research, education and advocacy (www. womenshealthresearch. org).

Liza has chosen for Anima a collection of songs that are fresh, unpredictable and innovative. Most of the songs were composed or co-composed by women including Joni Mitchell's "Blue," "A Thousand Kisses Deep" by Leonard Cohen and Sharon Robinson, and Kate Bush's "Wow." Liza is particularly haunting on "Silver Dagger" a song about confounding expectations. She also presents a unique and memorable interpretation of the Peggy Lee hit "Is That All There Is?" Her supporting cast includes such notables as pianists Bruce Barth, Michael Kanan, David Cook and Art Hirahara, bassist Pat O'Leary, drummers Michael Petrosino and Eric Halvorson, the reeds of Scott Robinson, Jim Clouse and Adam Kolker, and guitarist Kelsey Warren. Singer Shayna Steele duets with Liza on "Calling You."

Anima also includes some of Liza's highly praised yet controversial original compositions. She co-wrote "Revolving Mattress" with New York writer, arranger, producer and pianist David Cook and penned "Sorry Child" and "Lay We Down" with bassist and composer Pat O'Leary.

Liza's rendering of lyrics has been described as moving. "Liza has something unique going on. Musically her palette runs to the all the colours of the rainbow and her lyrics could - and should - be published in a volume of verse just as they are," says UK artist and pop phenomenon Ariel.

Liza explains, "I want you to feel these stories. Some are joyful, some are painful and some straddle the lines as our lives do. Anima is interpreted from inside of my feminine voice filtered through these talented men playing their instruments."

The title of the CD, Anima, was inspired by her three and a half year struggle through the medical system with her various health issues. It comes from the concept of the Anima and Animus by Carl Jung. Anima is an emotional journey.

"The idea for Anima began to germinate about two years ago," says Liza. "I picked up Carl Gustav Jung's Memories, Dreams, Reflections. I was especially enthralled by his concept of the 'Anima' and 'Animus.' The union of the pull of Anima, the female aspects present in the collective unconscious of men, and Animus, the male aspect present in the collective unconscious of women."

"To me Anima represents the feminine whisper inside of a patriarchal society," explains Liza. "After my stroke I went from doctor to doctor searching for answers. I was having trouble getting back in touch both physically and creatively. Doctors told me that I might never sing or write again. These blanket statements without hope or answers were not acceptable to me."

"I was confronted with a seeming lack of understanding regarding my plight from the primarily male dominated medical profession. This is when I learned that little research is done on how illness, disease and medications uniquely affect women's bodies," she goes on to explain. "I believe that we should increase funding for women's health research and I'm trying to do my part with Anima."

Liza Lee is compounding her mark on today's jazz scene with the release of Anima. Her personal and haunting musical interpretations exhibit an emotional vulnerability laced with a confident understanding of life's realities.

Liza is an important voice of the 21st Century. Her continual evolution and development, which are uniquely displayed on Anima, are fascinating to hear and her thought-provoking music is always memorable. She has undoubtedly proven herself a consistently intriguing vocalist and a significant addition to the current jazz scene with this CD…and now she's back.

Have you ever been to an educational session where you feel yourself slipping into a mild coma? As the speaker drones on, you are held captive in the classroom. Continuing education is extremely important for fitness professionals, but more often than not, the material is mind numbing.

The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) is changing the age-old approach to continuing education with its Lifting for Power Symposium, June 11-12, 2004 at the newly opened NSCA World Headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Each presenter brings years of experience and helpful hints on training athletes, clients, and patients. During the two-day clinic, attendees will learn the scientific basis and rationale for strength and conditioning, focusing specifically on power training and its application to various sports, and how to teach proper lifting technique for barbell and dumbbell Olympic exercises.

This practical hands-on course, sponsored in part by M-F Athletic—Perform Better, allows attendees to gain a better understanding of the fundamentals of power training. Be prepared to break a sweat—you’ll be lifting more than just your pencil.

Unique, Interactive Learning Games Created by Pittsburgh Multimedia Firm Providing New Approach to Nursing Education Nationwide

Unique, Interactive Learning Games Created by Pittsburgh Multimedia Firm Providing New Approach to Nursing Education Nationwide

Lava New Media, LLC recently developed two interactive CD-ROM games that provide oncology nurses with fun, entertaining and enjoyable ways to gain continuing education credits. Nurses nationwide are now using the CDs.

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) October 27, 2005

Lava New Media, LLC recently collaborated with the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), a national professional organization of more than 32,000 registered nurses and other healthcare providers dedicated to excellence in patient care, education, research, and administration in oncology nursing, and its educational subsidiary, OES, in the development of two interactive CD-ROM games that provide oncology nurses with fun, entertaining and enjoyable ways to gain continuing education credits.

Lava recently completed Common Threads, a multiple-player game designed to educate nurses about hormonal influences on breast and prostate cancers. In November, Clues-O, a solo game through which players learn the proper treatment of chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting, will be available.

"The games turn bland textbook information into highly vivid, audio and visual participatory experiences that draw nurses in and make the material fun to learn and easier to remember," says Dave Horn, Lava co-owner and principal, who worked with ONS and OES to bring their concepts to life.

Interactive Approach Proves Wildly Popular With Nurses

The collaborative relationship began last year when Lava designed two games for OES. One incorporated a Jeopardy-type approach; the other was an animated, choose-your-own-adventure experience that featured three comedic cartoon patients who could increasingly become healthier or sicker depending on which treatments the nurses chose for them. Last November, OES introduced the latter game at a nursing conference in Nashville, TN.

Response to the patient simulation game was extremely positive. More than 200 nurses surveyed unanimously said they found it a fun, unique learning experience and that they enjoyed the look and feel. None indicated finding it an offensive way to teach oncology practices. Following the conference, OES asked Lava to create a home edition of the patient simulation game and ordered 50,000 CDs.

Based on the popularity and demand of the existing games and this novel approach to oncology education, ONS and OES placed significant initial orders of the Common Threads and Clues-O CD-ROMs.

All four games, including Common Threads and Clues-O will be available for nurses to play at the Southwestern Pennsylvania Organization of Nurse Leaders' annual conference at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort & Spa on Nov. 10. Lava New Media's principals will be on hand to demonstrate how these can be customized for teaching almost any nursing education subject.

Horn’s previous experience creating interactive games for medical professionals includes one he programmed two years ago for a major pharmaceutical company, to introduce physicians to the benefits of a now-popular allergy relief product. “I understand the game has become a popular kiosk attraction at medical conferences and trade shows," says Horn.
