Considering Starting a New Business?

Considering Starting a New Business?

An overview for considerations before starting a new business dealing with the myriad of taxes involved. Also highlight importantce of knowing about industry segmenting and the IRS MSSP Programs

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) January 6, 2004

For nearly twenty-five years now, there has been a steady and growing trend toward self employment across the United States according to return filing information published by the IRS.

While this trend appears to be an overall positive force in our economy, it is worth noting that if you are considering starting your own business, there is one area of the business plan where special attention should be given to ensure a more successful opportunity. Taxes continue to be a significant area for consideration of those starting their own business. With business highlights featured in major articles such as “Franchise Fever” – (Wall Street Journal December 15, 2003); the entrepreneurs entering the market today are faced with far more complex tax issues than say ten years ago.

Having a game plan for taxes is essential for any business, especially one that is a new start up. Yet, very often more than not, taxes are not even given modest consideration until after the business has begun, and that first tax return is ready to file, only to then find out that there is yet another business expense to pay; Uncle Sam.

Not one business plan, nor franchise model has within it a comprehensive tax model to teach the new business owner or the tax professional they work with, how to manage and plan around the myriad of tax issues that may affect how profitable the business will be. So here are some considerations in taxation if one is considering a new business or franchise opportunity.

First, know all of the tax issues of that business. Know these by the Industry Type of business that is being considered. This information can be invaluable for a new business owner in avoiding so many of the problems we see when business owners ignore or do not understand how to plan around these tax traps. (Go to www. IRS. gov Look at Keyword MSSP for IRS Guides)

Second, interview tax professionals who have a sound understanding of business taxes. They should be familiar with the type of business that is being considered either as a franchise or a new start up or even a Home Based Business. Just because one prepares tax returns does not mean that they may have all of the qualifications necessary to provide guidance and advice about these many complex tax issues.

Third, and perhaps most important, understand and know why selecting the type of entity is crucial in current and future success of the business. The market is replete with seminars on “How-To” form your own LLC, and the Internet provides unlimited services that will form your corporation in Nevada for as low as $39.00, yet none of these options has with them a sound tax basis for the selection of the entity type or the state in which it will operate. Nevada corporations work well if you are in Nevada, but do little to help you if you are in California, except say a tax audit with many problems. (FTB Enforcement Advisory – Summer 2003)

Business Segmenting has become the new Buzz Word in the field of taxation. IRS through its MSSP Program (Market Segment Specialization Papers) now reviews all business based upon the type of business industry it may be. The chances may be higher for an IRS audit more because of the type of business than the activity of the business. Most tax professionals do very little beyond the typical twenty-hours per year in Continued Education (CE) to keep up with the vast number of changes that take place everyday at IRS, let alone the state or local taxes.

Finally, do not under value the need to talk with a good business attorney. One who is able to work with a tax professional qualified in specific business segments, and understands from a tax perspective, why an LLC may not be as good a plan as say perhaps an S-Corporation. The value of these two advisors can make all the difference in the world as to your future success and how much profit you are able to retain. Avoid the temptation to “cut corners” in costs for advice that is essential and valuable in ensuring your prolonged success. Making a substantial investment should also include thought of how well you plan to protect that investment, now and in the years ahead.

Tax Smart America developed a complete Industry Segment Tax Management System™ for virtually every type of business and franchise model in the market place. It licenses its intellectual property to tax professionals on a national basis and has proven to be an industry leader with this Business Method Patent Pending process. (See www. TaxSmartAmerica. Dr. Ervin Laszlo Claims the Key to an Integral Theory of Everything (TOE) - 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Nominee in Cambridge for Talk and Book Signing on Nationwide Tour

Dr. Ervin Laszlo Claims the Key to an Integral Theory of Everything (TOE) - 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Nominee in Cambridge for Talk and Book Signing on Nationwide Tour

Dr. Ervin Laszlo, Nobel Peace Prize Nominee to speak at Voices from the Edge speakers forum. Laszlo, one of the founding fathers of systems philosophy will speak about how human cultures evolve.

Cambridge, MA (PRWEB) March 27, 2005

“The Informed Universe: On the Track of an Integral Theory of Everything,” a talk by Dr. Ervin Laszlo on his recently released book Science and the Akashic Field, is part of the Voices from the Edge speakers series, sponsored by What Is Enlightenment? magazine. Dr. Laszlo’s exclusive Boston appearance is on Tuesday, April 5, 7:30pm, at 38 Cameron, 38 Cameron Ave., near the Cambridge/Arlington line; 5-minute walk from Davis Sq. and the Red Line. The evening will include a talk, followed by audience Q&A and a reception/book signing with Dr. Laszlo.

Tickets: $18, students w/ID $10: available at the door or online at 38cameron. com (strongly recommended since space is limited). Wheelchair accessible. For more information, visit 38cameron. com or call 617-492-4091.

Dr. Ervin Laszlo is available for interviews through Kenzo An, 617.407.2558.

If the problems facing the global community today are complex, massive in scale, and profoundly urgent, then the extraordinary capacities of Ervin Laszlo to address the contemporary condition is a testament that remarkable times produce equally remarkable individuals. A 2004 Nobel Peace Prize nominee, Laszlo is most widely recognized as the founding father of systems philosophy and a scientific framework to explain how human societies and civilizations change and evolve. He is the author of sixty-nine books translated into nineteen languages. Renowned for his ability to make complex scientific theories clear and accessible to a general public audience, this is a rare opportunity to hear Dr. Laszlo articulate his profound “integral theory of everything” found in his newest book, Science and the Akashic Field. His talk and book signing, Tuesday, April 5, 7:30pm, at 38 Cameron in Cambridge, is sponsored by the Voices from the Edge speakers series.

Quantum physics has long sought after a “Theory of Everything” (TOE), or a single mathematical equation that could account for all the laws in the universe. In Science and the Akashic Field, Laszlo proposes that a genuine TOE is achievable. Western scientists are beginning to discover what has been documented by Eastern sages and mystics for thousands of years; that within nature exists an interconnecting field that interweaves every atom, cell, organism, and mind, throughout time – “The Akashic Record.” This field acts as “the memory of the universe” and “continuously interacts with matter at every level from subatomic to cosmic to influence the way every living thing grows, adapts, and evolves.”

“Science and the Akashic Field is the product of four decades of searching for meaning through science,” says Laszlo about the impetus behind the book. “My enduring interest has been to find an answer to questions such as “What is the nature of the world?” and “What is the meaning of my life in the world? I wanted the most reliable kind of answers there are, and reflected that I could find no better source for them than science.” Laszlo’s committed search for truth through science has garnered the admiration of people around the world who are seeking to find meaning and make sense of life.

“Ervin Laszlo has, probably more than any person alive, intricately spelled out a staggering but often neglected fact: we live in a hopelessly interconnected universe, with each and every single thing connected in almost miraculous ways to each and every other,” says Ken Wilber, the world’s leading integral philosopher.

In 1995, Laszlo founded the prestigious Club of Budapest, gathering together leading minds in art, science, religion, and culture in order to create a high profile coalition to advocate for global sustainability. The Club features members such as the Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, musician Peter Gabriel, and Bianca Jagger. Its philosophy is based on “the realization that the enormous challenges that humanity is currently facing can only be overcome through the development of a global cultural consciousness.”

LaszloÂ’s concern for the future of humanity is why he was asked to participate in the Voices from the Edge speakers series. Voices from the Edge is an international forum presenting the thought leaders and visionaries at the leading edge in their respective fields seeking new and creative solutions to our current global situations.

Dr. Ervin Laszlo breadth of accomplishments is extraordinary: he is the holder of the highest degree in philosophy and human sciences from the Sorbonne (the State Doctorate), is recipient of four honorary Ph. D.s, awarded the 2001 Goi Award (the Japan Peace Prize), and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize as well as the Templeton Prize, to name just a few.

“The most brilliant, comprehensive, and intellectually satisfying integral theory of everything that I have ever read.”

Deepak Chopra, M. D. (On Science and the Akashic Field)

New Exhibition on Women’s History & Equality at National Constitution Center in Philadelphia

New Exhibition on Women’s History & Equality at National Constitution Center in Philadelphia

An original exhibition titled "From the Absence of Many to the Presence of All…The Unfinished Business of Women's Equality" will premiere Oct. 18, 2010, at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. It chronicles the historic, and ongoing, struggle for gender equality in America. The exhibition will be on display in the Center’s Posterity Hall through early 2011. Admission is free with regular museum admission.

Philadelphia, PA (Vocus) October 8, 2010

Exhibition highlights include timelines on a series of ribbons depicting the benchmark events and halting progress in the struggle for gender equality in America, a wall of portraits and stories of heroes of the women's rights movement from the 19th-21st centuries, and a mural collage of historic photographs, posters, and newspaper articles highlighting the history of women asserting their rights to equality of leadership in American society.

“The Unfinished Business of Women’s Equality” was commissioned by Drexel University College of Medicine’s Institute for Women’s Health and Leadership and made possible by the generosity of McDonald’s Corporation. The exhibition opens as the Institute launches Vision 2020, a 10-year initiative to promote women’s leadership and equality with An American Conversation about Women and Leadership on Oct. 21 and 22 at the NCC.

“This exhibition was created to inform the public about women’s history, which is often only a slim chapter in American history books,” Vision 2020 Co-Chair Lynn Yeakel said. “It asks girls and boys to consider what remains to be done to achieve equality, which is a cornerstone of our democracy.”

To add to the women’s history component of “The Unfinished Business of Women’s Equality,” an educators’ guide with a curriculum for middle and high school students has been developed. The guide will be available online beginning Oct. 18.

“The National Constitution Center is a proud Vision 2020 partner,” said National Constitution Center President and CEO David Eisner. “We look forward to exciting and inspiring a new generation of active citizens who are eager to carry on the legacy of the suffragists in protecting the ‘We’ in ‘We, the People.’”

The exhibition was developed by Remer & Talbott and designed by Metcalfe Architecture & Design.

Beckley, WV (PRWEB) August 1, 2006

Since 9/11 opportunities for law enforcement and criminal justice professionals have increased tremendously. The U. S. Department of Labor predicts that by 2010, the demand for FBI Officers, Police Officers, Private Detectives, U. S. Customs Agents and those in other professional criminal justice jobs will grow by more than 29 percent.

However, it takes more than desire for these professionals to reach their goals. With the new challenges ahead, well-educated and highly skilled criminal justice professionals are in demand. "This program is especially geared toward working professionals in criminal justice. The online delivery allows working professionals to complete the course demands while continuing their careers. Also, the program takes into account a great deal of previous training as credit toward the degree."

Criminal justice professionals may have already earned up to 80 of the 128 credits required for the degree through transfer of professional training and other college courses completed at regionally accredited schools.*

The learning outcomes are equivalent to those of the classroom-based program, with a delivery structure designed for the online learning environment. Students participate in national and group chats scheduled weekly, threaded discussion, and other on-line group interaction.

Graduates of the Mountain State University Administration of online Criminal Justice program (http://criminal-justice. mountainstate. edu) are prepared to enter law school or a graduate program. Career choices include law enforcement, corrections, courts, probation, parole, victim services, juvenile justice, case management, homeland security, and industrial/private security.
The message is clear, now is the perfect time for working criminal justice professionals to pursue a degree, and thanks to online programs (http://criminal-justice. mountainstate. edu) designed to work around their schedule, they can do so.

When a school or library buys an eBook title from Follett Digital Resources, the title is moved to a virtual shelf where it resides until it is checked out by a school or library patron. Digital rights management technology ensures that once a title is checked out by one person, it can't be checked out by anyone else until it has been returned to the virtual shelf. Where possible, the eBook distribution system is tightly connected with leading integrated library systems (ILS), such as Follett Software Company's Destiny Library Manager, allowing searching, accessing and returning eBooks to become part of the library's standard circulation process.

"The introduction of the Follett Digital Reader earlier this year makes Follett eBooks even more appealing to students and educators," said Clark. "We're excited more and more publishers are partnering with us to deliver digital content to today's tech-savvy students."

75% of State's Students Will Learn To Read with Innovative, Research-based Curriculum; Alabama Reading Initiative Gives Top Scores to Pearson's Reading Street Program

75% of State's Students Will Learn To Read with Innovative, Research-based Curriculum; Alabama Reading Initiative Gives Top Scores to Pearson's Reading Street Program

As Alabama's 400,000 elementary students begin the school year, more than 75% of them will be learning to read with an innovative, research-based program that received top scores in a comprehensive review by the Alabama Reading Initiative of the Department of Education. Alabama joins hundreds of thousands of students across the nation who are learning with the Scott Foresman Reading Street program. Developed by the education publisher Pearson, the curriculum is steeped in scientifically-based research and centered on the priority skills set by the National Reading Panel.

Montgomery, AL (PRWEB) September 3, 2008

"In our efforts to close the achievement gap, we must close the access gap. If we want to abate the number of struggling readers, then we must provide quality instruction." This statement from Birmingham City Schools Reading and Language Arts Director Dr. Dimple J. Martin reflects the thinking behind the decision of one of the 80-plus Alabama School Districts that has chosen the Scott Foresman Reading Street curriculum.

As the state's 400,000 elementary students begin the school year, more than 75% of them will be learning to read with an innovative, research-based program that received top scores in a comprehensive review by the Alabama Reading Initiative of the Department of Education. Alabama joins hundreds of thousands of students across the nation who are learning with the Scott Foresman Reading Street program. Developed by the education publisher Pearson, the curriculum is steeped in scientifically-based research and centered on the priority skills set by the National Reading Panel.

The state's largest districts - Mobile County, Montgomery County, Jefferson County, Birmingham City, Huntsville City, Madison County, Baldwin County, and Elmore County - are among the three-quarters of Alabama school districts that have adopted the Scott Foresman Reading Street curriculum. Evaluated by the Alabama Reading Initiative in its "Expert Review of Core Reading Programs," Reading Street received the highest scores of the nine core programs that were evaluated.

Explaining why Birmingham chose the program, Dr. Martin said, "Struggling readers don't only need remediation, they also need acceleration." She added, "With Scott Foresman Reading Street, we finally have a solid core reading program that understands the importance of language acquisition for early readers, intermediate readers and struggling readers."

She noted, "One of the main reasons we chose Reading Street was because of the program's high-interest reading content. We know that if we provide material that interests our students, they will become engaged and, in turn, will comprehend reading for meaning. Scott Foresman has helped us understand that if reading comprehension capabilities are solid, our students will be successful on any state-mandated test."

Mobile County Public Schools (MCPSS) has adopted both Reading Street and its companion intervention for struggling readers series, My Sidewalks. Marilyn Howell, Elementary Education Supervisor, Division of Curriculum and Instruction, described the decision-making process, "Our team conducted an extensive study of four reading series for potential adoption. This study included delving deeply into each of the series, searching for that which most closely aligned with the Alabama Course of Study, the MCPSS K-5 Reading Curriculum, and high stakes testing." She added, "We were also looking for a program that made the most effective provision for all types and levels of learners, possessed an array of assessments, was most user friendly for teachers, and provided motivating and appealing literature. After close scrutiny, it was the consensus of the textbook committee that Reading Street and My Sidewalks most completely met the MCPSS criteria."

Pearson's Alabama representative Brian Rhodes said, "Alabama recognized the depth and scope of the Scott Foresman Reading Street curriculum, which includes an integrated combination of instruction and intervention aligned to Reading First requirements and Alabama's state standards. Additionally, we created customized assessments and tailored professional development for teachers, both designed specifically for Alabama."

Pearson senior vice president for Reading, Dean Brown said, "Over the past two years, thousands of schools have adopted the Reading Street core curriculum, and districts' success with the program is being clearly documented in improved reading scores. We anticipate that Alabama will experience the same kinds of success as the rest of the country." He added that the Reading Street curriculum is solidly anchored in the most current scientific research and focuses on the National Reading Panel's priority skills that are proven to be indicators of reading success: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension.

UNFPA Head Asks World Leaders to Put Women’s Health at Heart of Development Priorities

UNFPA Head Asks World Leaders to Put Women’s Health at Heart of Development Priorities

UNFPA Executive Director Thoraya Ahmed Obaid today called on world leaders to increase funding for reproductive health, including family planning, and place women’s health at the centre of their national plans.

New York, NY (Vocus) September 20, 2010

UNFPA (http://www. unfpa. org) Executive Director Thoraya Ahmed Obaid today called on world leaders to increase funding for reproductive health, including family planning, and place women’s health at the centre of their national plans.

“Now is the time to move from speech lines to budget lines,” said Ms. Obaid at an event during the MDG Summit which started today at the United Nations. “Women deliver for their families, communities and nations, and now it is time to deliver for women. No woman should die giving life. There are still 1,000 women who die needlessly every day from complications of pregnancy and childbirth. There are still 215 million women with an unmet need for family planning and 2 million women suffering from the devastating childbirth injury of obstetric fistula.”

“Investments in reproductive health pay high dividends and advance productivity, economic growth and the rights of women,” said Ms. Obaid, stressing: “The health of women is not the focus of the health sector alone. The health of women depends on planning and investments across many sectors—in education, health, nutrition, gender equality, and infrastructure.”

“Roads and electricity, for example, should be directed towards health centres to support women and families,” Ms. Obaid emphasized. “National plans should prioritize community access to an integrated package of affordable and essential health services, including family planning, maternal health care and HIV prevention and treatment.”

Ms. Obaid assured world leaders that UNFPA (http://www. unfpa. org) was committed to helping nations strengthen their health systems and achieve universal access to reproductive health by 2015.

“We are working with WHO, UNICEF, UNAIDS and the World Bank to reduce high rates of maternal and newborn deaths in high priority countries,” said Ms. Obaid. “Together with the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition, UNFPA aims to expand family planning to 100 million women by 2015. We are supporting national counterparts to train and deploy midwives, and also to prevent and treat fistula.”

“UNFPA fully supports the Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health to be launched by the UN Secretary-General on Wednesday to save 16 million lives by 2015,” Ms. Obaid concluded.

Ms. Obaid received an MDG Lifetime Achievement Award in New York on the eve of the Summit, for promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women. The MDG Awards are given annually to honour exemplary contributions towards the development goals.

UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is an international development agency that promotes the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity. UNFPA supports countries in using population data for policies and programmes to reduce poverty and to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every young person is free of HIV/AIDS, and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect.

Leopardo Construction Completes 103,000-SF Interior Build-Out for Chicago Advertising Agency

Leopardo Construction, a leading construction services firm, recently completed a 103,000-square-foot interior build-out for the Chicago headquarters of Abelson Taylor, a medical and pharmaceutical advertising agency.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) October 24, 2007

Leopardo Construction, a leading construction services firm, recently completed a 103,000-square-foot interior build-out for the Chicago headquarters of Abelson Taylor, a medical and pharmaceutical advertising agency.

Needing to expand its operations, add collaborative spaces and create a modern working portfolio to feature its award-winning work, Abelson Taylor assembled an expert project team that included Harley Ellis Devereaux as designer, Leopardo Construction as general contractor and Staubach Midwest as the owner’s representative.

The new interior provides Abelson Taylor with many open office areas to create a space that feels much larger. Constructed during a 16-week schedule, the headquarters realized a significant increase in conference rooms without a dramatic addition of conferencing space. The office also features several small collaborative areas, more natural light and outside views into the workspace. A custom pantry was built in the shape of a 9-foot-tall egg – made of wood, plaster and fresco finishes – to pay homage to one of the agencies first campaigns.

S. T.O. P. Announces Medical Conference on Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS)

S. T.O. P. Announces Medical Conference on Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS)

(PRWEB) June 4, 2000

Contact: Laurie Girand, 408-867-9300

Focus is Long-term Health Implications for Survivors

(Chicago, IL) S. T.O. P. – Safe Tables Our Priority today announced that it is hosting a one day medical conference of specific interest to survivors of E. coli O157:H7, their parents and physicians. Entitled "Long-term Health Implications of Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome: A Multi-Disciplinary Conference," the event will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2000 in Seattle, Washington. Internationally renown medical experts on HUS will be presenting the latest information about health challenges faced by individuals who survive the catastrophic phase of illness and hospitalization. In the United States, Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome, also known as HUS, is the leading cause of acute kidney failure in children. Approximately 90% of children who develop Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome after an infection with E. coli O157:H7 survive but may face a lifetime of complications from the disease.

"By the time victims of E. coli O157:H7 poisoning and their loved ones are ready to leave the hospital, they have been through an incredible traumatic and brutally painful experience," said President Nancy Donley. "Oftentimes, there are many lingering medical problems and scores of unanswered questions. This is the first conference of its kind, assembling international authorities on HUS who can provide answers and bring the latest available information to persons most needing it." Though many medical conferences are centered around a single medical specialty, HUS involves so many of the bodyÂ’s systems that physicians and researchers for this event come from many disciplines, including nutrition, hematology, endocrinology, cardiovascular surgery, gastroenterology, and neuropsychology.

"The conference is a unique opportunity for parents of HUS children to meet other parents who have shared similar experiences and for physicians to get life-saving information," said Laurie Girand, Advisory Board Member and Conference Manager. "As a victimÂ’s organization, we know parents whose children are suffering but are hindered from proper treatment because the systemic cause is overlooked."

The conference will be held from 8:30 a. m. to 5:00 p. m. at the Bell Harbor Conference Center in downtown Seattle, WA. If an attendee registers before August 1, the fee for the event will be $90, which covers a light breakfast, lunch, two snacks, and reproduction of materials. Continuing Medical Education Credit will be available. Registration forms are available by calling the S. T.O. P. hotline at 1-800-350-stop or at the S. T.O. P. website, www. stop-usa. org.

Discontinuity: The Future of The Metaverse

Discontinuity: The Future of The Metaverse

The Metaverse -- sometimes referred to as the 3D Internet -- poses the possibility of a disruption similar to the popularization of the Internet in the 1990s, according to Simeon Spearman, an analyst at the futurist research and consulting firm Social Technologies

Washington, DC (PRWEB) April 30, 2008

As part of our series on discontinuities (those sudden, sharp breaks that can strike consumers, business sectors, nations, or the world with disruptive force), comes this brief on the Metaverse by Social Technologies analyst Simeon Spearman.

″The Metaverse is the fusion of virtually enhanced physical reality and physically persistent virtual space that allows users to experience it as both--or either,″ Spearman explains. ″It will knit together technological threads as varied as online games, mobile telephony, videoconferencing, GPS tracking and location-based services, satellite imagery, and online social networks--creating a visually rich, interactive user experience that transcends today's so-called 2D Internet and transforms the way business, leisure, education, and scientific research are conducted.″

Metaverse overview

Rising demand by devoted individual users, business users, and the scientific community is pushing the development of technologies to enable the Metaverse.

"It is also helping to create a vision for what the Metaverse should look like," Spearman notes, pointing to technologists John Smart and Jamais Cascio in their 2007 book, Metaverse Roadmap Overview: Pathways to the 3D Web.

″They identified four main areas of the Metaverse as mirror worlds, augmented reality, virtual worlds, and lifelogging," Spearman says. "Each of the areas is developing in distinct ways, but the authors note a fair amount of overlap, as well as areas where new 3D technologies interact with old 2D technologies to offer exciting possibilities for change.″

Smart and Cascio forecast that by 2016, half of all Internet users will have interactive avatars, with a high degree of socializing taking place in 3D worlds in any given week, especially among younger generations. The Internet research firm Gartner Group projects that 80% of 2007 Internet users will have some presence in the Metaverse by 2011.

Key technology attributes

The key attributes of the Metaverse include:
Gaming/ virtual worlds. Games and virtual worlds are perhaps the most common popular implementations of the Metaverse. Online games are typically played by a single player or by networked groups who have a goal or quest. Virtual worlds enable more freeform and creative user-directed activities than traditional gaming; a popular example is the virtual world Second Life, which gives players near-omnipotence to develop characters and interact with other players and the environment.  Mirror worlds. Online representations of real-world environments are known as mirror worlds, which reflect the actual world but have the benefit of additional information such as GPS-enhanced mapping or annotated notes, pictures, or videos. Falling prices for 3D modeling software are enabling individual users to have access to these technologies, which some believe will be used for virtual tourism in the future, among other applications. Google Earth is an example of a mirror world.  Augmented reality. This makes use of many of the same technologies as mirror worlds, but can be used to superimpose information translucently over actual objects. Information--whether visual, auditory, or haptic--can be delivered via a number of device types: specialized eyewear, miniature microphones, PDAs, or a mobile phone. The result is to enhance the user's experience of a real-world situation.  Lifelogging. Lifelogging makes use of recording technologies to track daily life. Gordon Bell of Microsoft has been recording every aspect of his life since 1997, and is helping to develop tools and software to popularize lifelogging. Nike has partnered with Apple to create shoes that log the distance run by their wearers, who can also use the data to generate health stats and training advice, delivered via iPods.

Business implications

Realization of the Metaverse will transform the way business, leisure, education, and scientific research are conducted. New and unforeseen areas of creativity and entrepreneurship are sure to continue to develop as fresh minds throw themselves at new technologies.
Business leaders should consider how the emerging Metaverse might apply to core business missions as well as to enhancing functions such as business communications, training, and corporate social responsibility.  A mature Metaverse may allow businesses to realize substantial cost savings through remote work policies. Technologies for supervision, collaboration, and interactivity are improving, suggesting that some of the common complaints about remote work may recede.  If people do not have to leave home to have near-real interactions with others, because technology has improved enough to enable "just like being there" experiences, they may choose to leave home only when they must. This could affect everything from car sales to home sales, retail purchasing, entertainment and tourism, and more.

Dr. Mark E. Meaney Announces the Creation of a National Institute for Patient Rights

Dr. Mark E. Meaney Announces the Creation of a National Institute for Patient Rights

To mark the 15th anniversary of the Patient Self-Determination Act, Dr. Mark E. Meaney announced the launch of a National Institute for Patient Rights. Dr. Meaney noted that the Institute will conduct community outreach to patients and their families in helping them protect and promote their rights 'at the bedside.'

Denver, CO (PRWEB) December 1, 2006

To commemorate the 15th anniversary of the Patient Self-Determination Act, Dr. Mark E. Meaney announced the creation of a National Institute for Patient Rights. In marking the occasion, Dr. Meaney noted that December 1st, 1991 was the date the Patient Self-Determination Act went into force. The Act codified into federal law the basic rights of patient self-determination and informed consent.

Dr. Meaney stated that, "The Patient Self-Determination Act remains a touchstone of a larger social and medical movement to enhance patient rights at the bedside." He went on to add that the Act has helped patients and their families play a greater role in patient care decisions.

By encouraging patient use of advance directives, such as a living will and a durable power of attorney for health care, the Act extends patient self-determination into the period in which patients can no longer communicate for themselves.

"Today, in commemorating the 15th anniversary of the Patient Self-Determination Act, we dedicate the creation of a National Institute for Patient Rights to the protection and promotion of patient rights," Meaney declared.

Meaney went on to observe that, despite billions spent on medical technologies, patients daily experience an erosion of their rights at the bedside. Ironically, the enormous advances in medicine have contributed to the erosion.

With specialist and sub-specialists for every organ, 'component management' has led to episodic intervention and a fragmentation of care. The fragmentation of care, in turn, has led to problems of a "failure to communicate" and "miscommunication."

Meaney also noted that, despite its successes, the record on the implementation of the community education provisions of PSDA remains "abysmal." Hospital-based healthcare professionals have neither the time nor the money to conduct community outreach on patient rights among a public who will eventually need this information.

Consequently, family members or patient advocates are often left bewildered by questions about the benefits and burdens of medical technologies used on their loved ones especially at the end of life.

Meaney stated, "The lack of information about patient rights no doubt contributes to conflict between family members and healthcare providers. Conflict is costly."

The mission of the National Institute for Patient Rights will be to deliver multimedia educational programming. Through a web site, a blog, a newsletter, books, CDs and DVDs, NIPR will provide information to patients and their families in helping them learn how to protect and promote their rights at the bedside "without alienating their healthcare providers."

Meaney stated, "NIPR will launch a web site and blog in January to provide information that will directly empower patients and their families. There are sites and blogs that address topics in bioethics, but none that specifically address patient rights at the bedside. Our empowerpatients. com will fill a void."

Dr. Meaney has a doctorate in philosophy specializing in health care ethics. He brings a wealth of experience to NIPR having headed-up two centers of health care ethics, while vice president of programs and publications at a third. He has also spent many years in hospitals serving patients and their families at the bedside. He has taught ethics for medical, nursing, allied health, and healthcare administration students for many years at various universities. Meaney has published widely on topics in applied ethics in professional and popular media. He serves as a consultant in a variety of capacities to numerous hospitals, extended care facilities, and healthcare-related corporations.

The DEACOM Roundtable served as an educational session for DEACOM users from various process manufacturing industries, including paints, coatings, and specialty chemicals.

The two-day event reviewed several new features and updates to the DEACOM system, such as increased security restrictions for inter-company transfers, and acted as an open forum for process industry peers and Deacom staff to discuss individual circumstances and solutions.

The Deacom open forum proved to be one of the top highlights for attendees. Shaun Tomlinson, IT Director for Finnaren & Haley, remarked, "The ability to talk one-on-one with Deacom staff and others in the business was very helpful."

Finnaren & Haley's VP Director of Marketing, Fred Moellers, agreed. According to Fred, "The forum was structured, but flexible enough to take discussions in the direction of group interests on any given subject."

Information on the 2nd Annual Deacom Process Manufacturers Roundtable will be available on www. deacom. net in early 2007.

To learn more about the DEACOM integrated accounting & ERP software system, or to schedule a free web demonstration, call 610-971-2278 ext. 11 or visit www. deacom. net.

Go for Regular Health and Medical Check-Ups

Go for Regular Health and Medical Check-Ups

Regardless of busy schedule, we should undergo regular medical check-ups to detect or prevent illnesses and diseases.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) July 29, 2006

Almost all of us are guilty, in one way or another, of neglecting our health even if we don't intend to. Stressed-out moms and dads usually spend long working hours in the office to finance their kid's education and pay for bills. On the other hand, there are model teens who forgo the 'luxury' of sleeping eight hours a night just to finish school papers and projects. All forms of compromise we make, such as insufficient sleep and fatty diet, have subsequent effects in our health. In our quest for achieving a good life, we often sacrifice our health and medical condition. The overwhelming pressure brought about by work, school, and personal concerns can very well make us oblivious of symptoms of serious illness or disease. Most of the time, people learn about their troublesome health and medical condition, like cancer and stroke, when it's already too late to be treated.

No matter how busy we are, health and medical experts say we should always subject ourselves to regular check-ups. It is so normal for us to visit the doctor only when we feel there's something wrong. But the thing is, not all symptoms of deadly illnesses can easily be felt and seen. For instance, a woman who has breast cancer may never notice the small lump in her right breast until she takes some time to self-assess her breasts. We may think we're perfectly fine until we suddenly breakdown in a middle of the day and find out we're not in tip-top shape after all. Younger people need to undergo general medical checkups with special attention on blood pressure or blood sugar (to prevent on-set of heart diseases and diabetes). Those belonging to the senior citizen-bracket should go for check-ups that can detect certain kinds of cancer.

Aside from general health and medical check-ups, women have to undergo pap smear annually to prevent cervical cancer or diseases related to reproductive system. It is also a must for women in their forties to subject themselves to mammogram. Breast self-checkup every month would suffice for younger women. Pregnant and lactating mothers also have to undergo pre and post natal checkups. Health and medical experts also advice parents to bring their children to the doctor for necessary immunization and proper health care. Since regular health checkups is indispensable, we should see to it that we have a family doctor. A family doctor is the one to hold all the medical records for future reference.

Greenbuild Carbon Offset Donation Highlights Importance of Forest Sequestration

Greenbuild Carbon Offset Donation Highlights Importance of Forest Sequestration

Leonardo Academy's Cleaner and Greener Program announced last week that the international textile and chemical manufacturer Milliken & Company, a founding member of U. S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is donating more than 25 million pounds of carbon dioxide credits (11,364 metric tons) to offset all the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with the annual Greenbuild conference November 6-9 in Chicago. This donation is equivalent to offsetting the annual carbon dioxide emissions of more than 27 million miles of passenger car driving. The non-profit Leonardo Academy's Cleaner and Greener® program calculates all types of emissions caused by energy use for Greenbuild including participant travel to and from the event, hotel rooms and meals. Leonardo Academy then determines the total amount of emissions from the event and the amount of carbon reduction credits and other emission reductions necessary to balance or offset the event's emissions.

Madison, Wisconsin (PRWEB) November 12, 2007

Leonardo Academy's Cleaner and Greener Program announced last week that the international textile and chemical manufacturer Milliken & Company, a founding member of U. S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is donating more than 25 million pounds of carbon dioxide credits (11,364 metric tons) to offset all the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with the annual Greenbuild conference November 6-9 in Chicago. This donation is equivalent to offsetting the annual carbon dioxide emissions of more than 27 million miles of passenger car driving.

"It is outstanding that Milliken has made a major donation of offset for the third consecutive year," said Michael Arny, founder and president of the Leonardo Academy. "This donation provides the sustainability community with an opportunity to learn that the maintenance of sequestration in existing forests is just as important as creating sequestration by planting new forests."

The non-profit Leonardo Academy's Cleaner and Greener® program calculates all types of emissions caused by energy use for Greenbuild including participant travel to and from the event, hotel rooms and meals. The Leonardo Academy then determines the total amount of emissions from the event and the amount of carbon reduction credits and other emission reductions necessary to balance or offset the event's emissions.

Trees tell Milliken's stewardship story. Milliken forests sequester millions of pounds of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The headquarters campus in Spartanburg, S. C., is a nationally acclaimed arboretum, dedicated to cultivating and sharing information about noble trees for future generations. Milliken nurtures millions of trees in the southeast and New England, in addition to partnerships with national, state and local organizations concerned with the Earth. Its Trees For All initiative provides increased awareness and tree planting incentives to the supply chain.

Milliken is a pilot participant in The Draft American National Standard for Trial Use LEO-500-2001 which covers Emissions Inventories, Offsets and Reduction Credits. Milliken followed this standard in documenting the emission sequestration credits earned by its forests for this donation.

Milliken & Company (www. sustainablecarpet. com) champions sustainable principles and practices internally and in partnership with others. Together with USGBC, the company annually recognizes the achievements of local USGBC organizations around the country by presenting the annual Chapter Awards during Member Day at the conference.

Leonardo Academy (www. leonardoacademy. org) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1997 that is dedicated to advancing sustainability and putting the competitive market to work on improving the environment. Leonardo Academy develops and distributes strategies, guidance, metrics, standards, education, and information on how to increase sustainability. Leonardo Academy also help companies, organizations, families, and individuals successfully promote, encourage, and implement sustainability. Leonardo Academy's integrated approach makes sustainability very practical. Leonardo Academy provides: Sustainability Assessments and Strategies for companies and organizations, LEED® Implementation and Certification, Emissions Footprint Analysis plus Emission Reduction and Offset Strategies, Sustainable Land Management, Sustainability Education and Training, and Certification of Emission Reduction and Offset Achievements through our Cleaner and Greener® Program for events, companies and organizations.
