Teachers and learners of English have now got a new tool to help master the sounds of the English language thanks to the British Council’s latest iPad pronunciation app. Sounds Right is an interactive learn english pronunciation chart with sounds grouped by vowels, consonants and diphthongs complete with examples of each in use. It is available to download from the iTunes store today for free.

Sounds Right was originally created for interactive whiteboards and has recently been released for use on handheld learning devices.

Mark Hamilton, Research and Development Consultant at the British Council, said: “About six years ago I developed an interactive Learn English pronunciation chart to enable teachers in class to model the sounds of the English language and help learners with their pronunciation. During this time the application has been used in British Council teaching centres in over 100 countries but we were unable to give it to learners to help with practicing pronunciation outside of the classroom. However, the great news now is that the iPad and other handheld learning devices are enabling us to make our Learn English materials accessible to everyone.”

Sounds Right, which was profiled in the iTunes store’s new and noteworthy section, is the latest in a number of free Learn English apps the British Council has developed for handheld learning devices. For more information visit the British Council’s site for English learners.

BII: Education Is the Key to Cultural Change on Alcohol - Not the Heavy Hand of the Medics

BII: Education Is the Key to Cultural Change on Alcohol - Not the Heavy Hand of the Medics

BII Reflects on the BMA Report 'Under the Influence'

Ferndale, WA (PRWeb UK) September 18, 2009

In response to the BMA report "Under the Influence," Neil Robertson, Chief Executive of BII, the professional body for the licensed retail industry, commented: "The proposals made in last week's report are 'sledgehammer to crack a nut' approaches again, as we see so often from academic institutions and the medical profession, who appear to be rather misguided and ill-informed.

"Where is the evidence to support their claims? We already know that tax increases and changes in licensing hours do not bring down consumption rates so how is this going to help? The report states that alcohol consumption has rapidly increased in recent years. This is simply incorrect - the BBPA's Statistical Handbook gives figures compiled with HM Revenue & Customs that show consumption fell in 2008 and is 6.1% lower than in 2004.

"The medics need to remember that a lot of pubs sell more food than drink and that they provide a valuable resource to communities. We've said it time and time again; the pub is often the social hub of a town or village and closing it has far-reaching implications.

"Draconian measures of the sort suggested would shut between 5,000 and 10,000 pubs in the UK resulting in a further 100,000 people out of work. The extent of poor health associated with unemployment is well documented so the end result of the BMA's recommendations would be an increase in poor health rather than an improvement. How can they justify that?!

"What's more, the pub is the only environment where alcohol service and consumption is controlled. The more pubs we lose, the more people will drink at home and in unsupervised situations thus creating even bigger problems leading on to associations with drugs and anti-social behaviour. Frankly, the ramifications of the BMA's recommendations are extremely worrying."

BII strongly objects to the remark that 'industry funded health education has served the needs of the alcohol industry, not public health'.

Neil continued: "We firmly believe - and always have done - that education is the key to the cultural change that the report calls for. And education begins at a young age. The BII Schools Project and the associated BIIAB Level 1 Certificate in Alcohol Awareness (http://biiab. bii. org/qualifications/qualification-CAA), which are widely supported by the industry, were established specifically to address this. Over 6,400 candidates have been through the Certificate in Alcohol Awareness to date and initial findings from evaluation of the qualification reveal very positive results:
78% of course graduates agree or strongly agree that, if they choose to drink, they are more likely to be a responsible drinker as a result of the course 61% agree or strongly agree that, if they choose to drink, they are less likely to binge drink as a result of the course

"The BMA report goes one step further to suggest that the UK Governments move away from partnership with the alcohol industry and look at alternatives to self-regulation. A recommendation based on a view by the BMA Board of Science that partnership working has allowed the industry to 'co-opt the public health agenda'. This is a naïve and provocative claim and, in fact, there are many examples as to how partnership working has proved successful. Best Bar None (http://bii. bii. org/about-bii/socialresponsibility/bbn) is one such initiative and the St Neots Community Alcohol Partnership is another.

"The report also recommends that a compulsory levy is introduced on the alcohol industry, which will help to fund an independent public health body to oversee alcohol-related research, health promotion and policy advice. Our response to this is simple: the industry does not need yet another body! The public are already confused by existing health messages (is the safe level of units 14 or 21 per week, for example?). Adding another body with a further set of messages will only add to this confusion and do more harm than good.

"Oh and it's worth noting that a survey by YouGov earlier this year for the Department of Health's own 'Know Your Limits' campaign found that men and women in the health profession (including doctors and nurses, etc) consume on average 26 units of alcohol per week. When you consider that Department of health guidelines suggest no more than 24 units a week for a man and 14 units for a woman, this makes for interesting reading……"

Notes to Editors:
A registered charity, BII is the professional body for the licensed retail sector. Its members are tenants, lessees, managers and freeholders of outlets licensed to sell alcohol for consumption both on and off the premises, plus many individuals and companies which support the industry in a variety of ways. It also has 55 corporate patrons, members and supporters. BII's mission is to promote high standards of professionalism throughout the licensed retail sector; to encourage new entrants into the industry, and to help them develop their long-term careers.

BII has achieved the ISO9001:2000 quality standard, Investors in People and was listed in the 'one to watch' category of the Sunday Times 'Best Companies to Work For' survey in 2008.

Wholly-owned by BII, BIIAB is the leading awarding body for the licensed retail sector. BIIAB is accredited by Ofqual and the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). Over 1.5 million BIIAB qualifications have been processed so far.

Henley Business School Reveals Results of Corporate Learning Priorities Survey 2010

Henley Business School Reveals Results of Corporate Learning Priorities Survey 2010

Henley Business School has revealed that HR professionals are preparing for a post-recession upturn, according to its Corporate Learning Priorities Survey 2010.

St. Albans, Herts (PRWEB) January 30, 2010

Henley Business School has revealed that developing the leadership skills of middle managers and equipping them to manage change are among the top learning and development priorities for organisations in 2010, according to the Corporate Learning Priorities Survey 2010 carried out by Henley's Corporate Development team.

Respondents indicated a significant focus on leadership development (http://www. henley. reading. ac. uk/executiveeducation/cl-openedp/cl-opendp-Leadership. aspx (http://www. henley. reading. ac. uk/executiveeducation/cl-openedp/cl-opendp-Leadership. aspx)) in 2010, particularly at middle management level. They also anticipate focusing on high-potentials as they grow and develop to lead their businesses into an uncertain future. One respondent commented they were placing, "Change even higher on the agenda in 2010" and 67% of respondents chose 'Managing Change' as a specific development priority for managers.

The survey, amongst 2,500 HR and learning development professionals, was designed to provide an up-to-date perspective of the executive education (http://www. henley. reading. ac. uk/executiveeducation/cl-home. aspx (http://www. henley. reading. ac. uk/executiveeducation/cl-home. aspx)) and development landscape. Over 60% of those completing the survey were HR Directors, Vice-Presidents or Heads of HR or Learning & Development in some of the UK's largest employers.

Linda Irwin, Executive Director, Corporate Development for Henley Business School, said that the research showed many were planning for the long-term, and not making budget cuts they may live to regret:

"Managing Directors, CEOs, HR Directors and Learning & Development professionals have adopted a pragmatic, level-headed, measured approach when faced with the tumultuous economic climate we have endured. As one respondent commented in the survey, his organisation's priority is to 'Ride out the storm that has been created by the recession without losing our A teams.' Rather than axing development budgets and cutting leadership development they have focused effort on those individuals who they expect will lead their organisations into a future yet to be created. Softer skills, in leadership styles and in leadership coaching (http://www. henley. reading. ac. uk/executiveeducation/HenleyCoachingServices/cl-HenleyCoachingServices. aspx (http://www. henley. reading. ac. uk/executiveeducation/HenleyCoachingServices/cl-HenleyCoachingServices. aspx)) for instance, that bring out the very best in people and facilitate team working are also a priority."

Key findings of the Priorities Survey 2010 included all respondents stating that leadership development is the most important priority. The development of middle managers is also considered extremely important with 67% naming it as their first or second priority, compared to only 35% rating leadership development for senior managers in their top 5. The importance of succession planning and attracting new talent are key priorities for 2010, both rising in importance from 2009. 67% of respondents see equipping managers for 'managing change' as a specific development priority, though only 16% view it as an HR concern for 2010. This inconsistency suggests the respondents - mainly HR professionals - feel they have dealt with the immediate aftermath of change, and may see responsibility for it now passing to managers, who need to be equipped to deal with it.

Commenting on the findings, Linda Irwin said: "It seems organisations are aligning their Learning and Development priorities with their business objectives more closely than they have ever done before. This research has helped us to redesign our Executive Education Portfolio (http://www. henley. reading. ac. uk/executiveeducation/about/cl-about. aspx (http://www. henley. reading. ac. uk/executiveeducation/about/cl-about. aspx)) to reflect the current priorities of organisations and those that lead them."

Notes to Editors:
The survey was conducted online in November 2009 amongst 2,500 corporate client and non-client contacts of Henley Business School. A total of 119 responses were received of which 60% were from Directors, VP's or Heads of HR or Learning & Development, 32% were HR Managers/Officers and 7% were non-HR Directors.

Rural Leaders Invited to Help “Chart a New Course for Rural Communities”

Rural Leaders Invited to Help “Chart a New Course for Rural Communities”

The Initiative Foundation is sponsoring this day-long workshop featuring Don Macke from the Center for Rural Entrepreneurship in Lincoln, Nebraska and several panels on entrepreneurship training and community assistance opportunities.

Saint Paul, MN (PRWEB) April 15, 2006

Rural communities are beginning to rethink the premises upon which their economic development strategies are based. “They are reassessing their economic opportunities and redefining themselves. They are building on their assets and their entrepreneurial capacity,” says Chuck Fluharty, director of the Rural Policy Research Institute (RUPRI) and a leading national rural research expert. “Community leaders are embracing new economic development models that emphasize entrepreneurship.”

Learn more about these models, and begin to construct strategies for your own communities at Energizing Entrepreneurs - Charting a Course for Rural Communities, April 27, 2006, Kelly Inn, St. Cloud MN. The Initiative Foundation and Minnesota Rural Partners present this day-long conference on how to grow entrepreneurs in your own community and how to support and encourage those you have already. It is a statewide event, open to all – and a great bargain! Event will feature keynote speaker Don Macke, a national rural entrepreneurship expert and co-director of the RUPRI Center for Rural Entrepreneurship. Here’s an excerpt from RUPRI’s work in this arena:

Just what rural America needs—another resource on “how to do economic development.” So many resources have been produced over the years and still so many rural communities are struggling and lacking economic opportunity.

We all know well that our world is changing rapidly. What made sense yesterday may not make sense today and clearly will be irrelevant tomorrow. Think about this reality for just one minute. The lifespan on the Fortune 500 (list of the United States largest corporations) is constantly shortening. Erik Pages with EntreWorks Consulting shares the numbers:

In 1960 it took 35 years to replace 35% of the Fortune 500.

In 1999 it took 3 to 4 years to do so!

If the largest corporations can’t figure out how to stay on top, how can small rural communities even begin to compete? Ensuring our communities’ success into the future is challenging. The alternative is failure and decline. Understanding economic development today is critically important. For rural communities to compete, they must adopt a development strategy that is in tune with economic and social realities that are driving change in the early part of the 21st century. (From www. energizingentrepreneurs. org)

At the April 27 meeting, Don Macke will provide a half-day training session on the entrepreneurship strategies emerging across the United States that are replicable right now in communities across Minnesota. Panel presentations will showcase Minnesota entrepreneurs, entrepreneurial training, and how communities are getting engaged, including representatives of Minnesota Entrepreneurial Gateway Pilot Communities who will talk about their initial efforts to build entrepreneurial support mechanisms.

Also on hand, the Anderson Entrepreneurial Center of St. Cloud State University and its community-based education partnerships will discuss their resources. All participants in the April 27 meeting will receive a copy of the RUPRI Center's new book, Energizing Entrepreneurs - Charting a Course for Rural Communities, chock full of ideas, examples, assessments, methods and resources to use entrepreneurship as an economic development strategy.

This event is open to everyone. Registration, including lunch and all materials and book is $50. The cost is $25 for Initiative Foundation Healthy Community Partnership participants. On-line registration and agenda information is available at www. minnesotaruralpartners. org. The Simulator Teen Driver Education Launches Nationwide Driver's Safety Campaign

The Simulator Teen Driver Education Launches Nationwide Driver's Safety Campaign

An exciting new, multimedia, interactive driver's training experience designed to prepare teenagers and their parents for a lifetime of safety on the road -- The Simulator Teen Driver Education -- launches April 13-15, 2007 in San Juan Capistrano, CA.

Orange County, CA (PRWEB) April 11, 2007

An exciting new, multimedia, interactive driver's training experience designed to prepare teenagers and their parents for a lifetime of safety on the road -- The Simulator Teen Driver Education -- launches April 13-15, 2007 in San Juan Capistrano, CA.

The initial event will take place at the Costco Plaza, 33949 Camino Capistrano and is presented in association with San Juan Capistrano Ford and Costco. The California Highway Patrol, the Orange County Sheriff's Department, and the California Department of Insurance will also be on hand to give helpful tips and answer questions for parents. The Simulator Teen Driver Education is free to teens and their parents. Hours are 10:00 a. m.-6:00 p. m. daily.

"We're on a mission to redefine driver's education and provide a proven training program for teens that will save lives," said Tim Albright, president, Metro City Group, owner of The Simulator, a sixty-eight foot tractor trailer equipped with the latest technology in a virtual simulator evaluation program that provides practical behind the wheel driving in a simulated environment.

It takes students on a fifteen-minute interactive experience, allow them to practice in a variety of driving situations from high traffic, fog, rain and nighttime driving to turn lane, passing, and yield scenarios.

"The difference in our simulator and ones of the past is that this gets the kids involved directly in real time driving situations, instead of just being a part of a video game type of experience," Albright stated.

And The Simulator doesn't come a moment too soon. According to a study released in January 2006 by the American Automobile Association's Foundation for Traffic Safety, entitled "Teen Crashes: Everyone Is at Risk," drivers ages 15-17 were "involved in fatal crashes that claimed the lives of 30,917 people" from 1995 through 2004.

Upcoming events where the public can experience The Simulator include: Southern California Auto Expo, April 25-29 at the Ontario Convention Center; Extreme Motorsports Expo, May 18-20 at the Orange County Fair & Exhibit Center; the Huntington Beach Fourth of July Festival and Surf Championships; several NHRA Championship drag racing events including July 20-22 at Schuk's Auto Supply Nationals at Pacific Raceways in Kent, WA, (outside of Seattle), July 27-29 at the Fram Autolite Nationals at Sonoma Dragstrip in Sonoma, CA, and October 18-21 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Las Vegas, NV. From May 25 to June 10, The Simulator will be making stops at seventeen high schools in Tazewell county, a rural community located outside of Peoria, IL that has one of the most devastating teen driving fatality records in the nation.

The Simulator puts students in dangerous situations without putting them in real life danger, enabling them to practice possible solutions with potential problems such as pedestrians that wander onto a roadway, drivers who fail to stop for red lights/stop signs, or speeding. Each driver will be evaluated at the end of the experience and given a print out detailing their results on drivers responses, reaction times, crash reduction techniques, and general knowledge of the road.

The Simulator trailer is equipped with a state-of-the-art multimedia room, where parents can view educational materials that will assist them in better participating in their teen's driving experience. Located in the very front are a fully equipped recording studio, theatre projection studio and audio channeling room. Incorporated into the seventy foot awning located directly outside is a 180' screen Simulator Theatre complete with Surround Sound.

Based in Laguna Niguel, CA, The Simulator was created to help parents and teens learn about the resources available to help them become safer, better, and more responsible drivers. UWP’s Non-Credit Courses Bridge Gap Between Academic and Work Worlds

UWP’s Non-Credit Courses Bridge Gap Between Academic and Work Worlds

Responding to the educational needs of criminal justice professionals who wish to advance their skills to advance their careers, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville has partnered with the Wisconsin Department of Justice to develop two non-credit courses for law enforcement professionals: First-Line Supervisory Training and Leadership in Police Organizations. The goal of the partnership is to encourage police officers to continue their education while maintaining their current positions.

Platteville, WI (PRWEB) August 9, 2006

Traditionally, career education has centered on attending structured campus programs with the goal of earning a specific degree. With the advent of distance education, students were offered an alternative venue, but the focus remained on obtaining a formal degree. Unfortunately, this narrow view of education does not serve those professionals who wish to upgrade their skills to earn a promotion, but who do not wish to earn a degree.

First-Line Supervisory Training has been available online since 2004 and the initial response to the program has been positive. The online format works well for law enforcement officials, who may be serving in isolated communities and who generally have to study around unpredictable work schedules. In addition to learning from the instructor, the structure of the virtual classroom allows course participants to network with other professionals. “There are a lot of practical ideas that other people are using,” notes 2005 program graduate Chris Fitzgerald, an investigator with the Rice Lake, WI police department. “If you are having a similar problem, you can just email (other students) a question and they get right back to you.”

In a post-course survey, UWP’s online graduates reported that the material covered in the course was relevant and that they had been able to apply their new skills at their workplace. “As a supervisor I constantly look for training to enhance my leadership and supervisory skills,” remarks Milwaukee patrol sergeant Karl Robbins. “During the course I learned to motivate my officers with recognition, greater responsibilities and experience, instead of ruling with an iron fist.”

The success of the First-Line Supervisory Training course led to the development of the new Leadership in Police Organizations course. Registration for both non-credit courses is available online until August 22, 2006. The courses will be held online from September 5 – December 22, 2006. In addition to non-credit courses, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville also offers online undergraduate programs in business administration and criminal justice and online graduate programs in criminal justice, engineering and project management. Recession Boosts Waterproof Fire Safe Sales

Recession Boosts Waterproof Fire Safe Sales

Fire Protection Online has observed a 400 percent increase in sales since the beginning of the recession.

Dartford, Kent, UK (PRWEB) September 30, 2009

What do you do when money is tight? You protect what you cannot afford to replace, of course. Fire Protection Online, one of the Internet's leading retailers of fire safety supplies, has seen this principle at work in the dramatic increase in fire safe (http://www. fireprotectiononline. co. uk/fire-safes/ (http://www. fireprotectiononline. co. uk/fire-safes/)) sales since the recession started.

"Sales of waterproof fire safes have increased by more than 400 percent," said Jason Miller, sales manager at Fire Protection Online. "The recession has made people more interested in protecting their possessions."

Waterproof, fireproof boxes provide a place in your home where you can store valuables, and not have to worry about them being destroyed by fire or water. For the one-time cost of purchasing a fire chest, consumers can have peace of mind knowing their valuables and important documents are in a safe, fireproof box.

Many don't realize how important their legal documents and valuables are until they are destroyed in a fire or flood. Miller stated, "Don't wait until it's too late. Protect yourself and your valuables now. Rest assured our products will provide you with the protection you demand."

Fire Protection Online is the logical choice for anyone interested in purchasing a fire safe. The Internet retailer carries the largest selection of Honeywell fireproof boxes (http://www. fireprotectiononline. co. uk/honeywell-fire-safes/) in the United Kingdom. They also carry a wide variety of SentrySafe fireproof (http://www. fireprotectiononline. co. uk/sentry-fire-safes/) products. Fireproof boxes can vary in price from £30 for a small, simple fire safe to £200 or £300 for a large fire chest with a lot of valuable features.

"Waterproof fire safes are a comparatively inexpensive way to protect your documents and valuables," Miller said. "Preparing yourself for the unexpected is an important task, and here at Fire Protection Online we give you the tools to do so, without exorbitant costs."

Polished Social Image Consultants Teams Up With Rosie's Place; Offers Exclusive Wardrobe "Spring Cleaning" to Benefit a Great Cause

Polished Social Image Consultants Teams Up With Rosie's Place; Offers Exclusive Wardrobe "Spring Cleaning" to Benefit a Great Cause

Closet busting at the seams? Have ten pairs of pants but nothing to wear? Wondering which jeans actually flatter your figure? Need to know what's hot and not this season?

Boston, MA (PRWEB) March 17, 2004

Closet busting at the seams? Have ten pairs of pants but nothing to wear? Wondering which jeans actually flatter your figure? Need to know what's hot and not this season? In celebration of March National Clean Out Your Closet month, Polished Social Image Consultants is pleased to announce it’s "Spring Fling" service – professional wardrobe editing with a twist: this month only, all the unneeded items will go to Rosie's Place, a non profit organization that helps poor and homeless women by providing shelter, food and above all, solutions – from the immediate to the long term including advocacy, clothing and job training.

As Boston's only service specializing in total lifestyle and image improvement, Polished Social Image Consultants brings Bostonians the first-ever cache of services for enhancing their personal and professional image. According to owner Samantha von Sperling, "From corporate presidents to new moms to young adults getting ready to enter the work force, everyone needs a voice of reason when it comes to what to wear. Polished's exclusive array of services allows me to create a custom program tailored to individual needs."

Von Sperling's highly personalized approach to wardrobe management utilizes her discerning eye to whip even the most stuffed closet into shape – culling both the cutting edge and the classics to create a look that's both modern and individual. "There is no one universal truth when it comes to clothes – a vintage Chanel suit may look dowdy on one person and dreamy on another. Having a good editor helps enormously," explained von Sperling.

Want to get a jump start? Among the items von Sperling has "hot listed" for spring 2004 are:

anything pink and green – think summering in Nantucket, jelly bags in sorbet colors added textures and stripes – little details that set a simple t-shirt apart mainstays such as a navy or black suit and a great pair of black heels fantastic prints – bold, graphic ways to make a wardrobe say "wow", now mix and match solids including twin sets in varying weights and classic fitted khakis a stunning silk scarf to multi-task as a "fun" belt or a timeless accent piece

The price for this candid on-site advice? $90/hour with most Spring Flings taking anywhere from one to three hours. Plus, because von Sperling is also a skilled personal shopper, she can ease the purge with a quick trip for some seasonal supplements. "Many people continue to buy without knowing what really compliments their shape and coloring. Less is really more when you have the essentials down," explained von Sperling. "The are always a few standouts in any season – the key is to mix them judiciously to create a signature style. Adhering too closely to a trend always ends up looking silly."

Von Sperling has built an extra perk into her package by offering to provide every edited piece this month to Rosie's Place. "Providing good clothes to a great charity seemed like a natural extension of what I do. I've always believed in the important work Rosie's Place does and I'm delighted we're working together."

Since 1974, women have found an oasis of hope and nourishment at Rosie's Place. Rosie's Place provides a safe and nurturing environment that helps poor and homeless women maintain their dignity, seek opportunity and find security in their lives. Rosie's Place has evolved from providing meals and shelter to creating permanent solutions through advocacy, education and affordable housing. Rosie's Place relies solely on the generous support of individuals, foundations and corporations and does not accept any city, state or federal funding.

Spring Fling services to benefit Rosie's Place can be booked any time during the month of March and used through May 31. In addition to wardrobe makeovers, Polished services include personal shopping, make-up application, etiquette tips and dance lessons as well as corporate consultations. 2008 Joint Statistical Meetings Convene August 3-7 in Denver

The 2008 Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM), the world's largest annual gathering of statisticians, will convene this summer in Denver at the Colorado Convention Center August 3-7. The theme for this year's conference is Communicating Statistics: Speaking Out and Reaching Out, and the sessions will include timely discussions of such topics as the electoral process, climate change, clinical trial design, and sports.

Alexandria, VA (PRWEB) June 10, 2008

The 2008 Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM), the world's largest annual gathering of statisticians, will convene this summer in Denver at the Colorado Convention Center August 3-7. The theme for this year's conference is Communicating Statistics: Speaking Out and Reaching Out, and the sessions will include timely discussions of such topics as the electoral process, climate change, clinical trial design, and sports.

"JSM brings together our discipline and profession and shows to our members and the public many examples of the presence and impact of statistics in our daily lives," said Peter A. Lachenbruch, ASA's President. "The conference will address issues of national and international concern, including climate change, global warming and statistical applications in medicine and genomics. It will encompass topics in political processes such as ensuring fair elections, the physical sciences, and the social sciences. In particular, preparing for the census will be prominent for the next several years."

Lachenbruch continued, "Statistical applications in manufacturing processes and quality are a common theme in our meetings. In the current economic situation, we will need reliable information from our statistical agencies and sound analytic skills from academia, industry, and government. We are a data-driven society, and the statistics discipline has a proud heritage of using the data to help make sensible decisions in the face of uncertainty."

More than 5,000 statisticians from government, industry and academia traditionally attend the annual JSM, which feature a range of activities, including more than 2,500 presentations, panels, roundtables, poster presentations, continuing education courses, exhibit hall (with state-of-the-art statistical products and opportunities), career placement service, society, section and committee meetings, and social and networking opportunities.

JSM is open to ASA members and non-members and has special pricing for students, seniors, K-12 teachers, and also offers one-day registrations. Early bird registration is available through June 26 at http://www. amstat. org/meetings/jsm/2008/index. cfm? fuseaction=registration (http://www. amstat. org/meetings/jsm/2008/index. cfm? fuseaction=registration), where complete registration information and pricing also are available.

A brief history of the ASA annual meetings follows:
The inaugural annual meeting of the newly formed American Statistical Society (as it was briefly called at its establishment in 1839) was held in Boston Feb. 5, 1840. Attendance at the meeting was 10. No presentations had been made at the first annual meeting in February, but one was made at a meeting held in April 1840. Meetings continued to be held in Boston through the early 1900s.  Scheduling meetings outside Boston and in conjunction with other societies was part of an attempt to make the association more national. The 71st annual meeting in 1909 in New York was held in conjunction with nine other associations and featured four presentations over several days.  For two decades afterward, the ASA annual meeting, with one exception, was held annually in December for 2-4 days. The 90th meeting in 1928 had 17 sessions with multiple competing time slots each day. From 1929 through 1948, ASA held 18 meetings. By 1937, there were 38 presentations.  In 1935, ASA combined with several associations, with which it often met, to form the Allied Social Sciences Association. This association's first sponsored meeting, called the Allied Meetings, was held in 1936 in Chicago, and the ASA held its annual meting with this group once every three years until 1974. With the formation of the IMS in 1935 and the International Biometrics Society in 1948, meetings with only statistical societies, called "Joint Meetings," were initiated, and the ASA held its annual meetings with these groups in the years it did not meet with the Allied group. Since 1974, when the Joint Statistical Meetings were formally organized, the ASA has continually held its annual meeting with this group. JSM is held jointly with the American Statistical Association (ASA), the International Biometric Society (ENAR and WNAR), the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS), and the Statistical Society of Canada. The next several Joint Statistical Meetings are scheduled as follows: 2009, Washington DC; 2010, Vancouver, British Columbia; 2011, Miami Beach; 2012, San Diego; 2013, TBD; and, for the 175th JSM in 2014, the meeting returns to Boston, where it all began.

Complete program and registration information for JSM 2008 are available at the JSM web site at http://www. amstat. org/meetings/jsm/2008/ (http://www. amstat. org/meetings/jsm/2008/).

About the American Statistical Association:

ICC Assists Colombian Stakeholders to Upgrade Plumbing Code

ICC Assists Colombian Stakeholders to Upgrade Plumbing Code

Known worldwide for its outstanding building safety and fire prevention codes, the International Code Council has been working with two leaders in Colombia’s building sector to help them improve the quality of plumbing and water conservation efforts throughout their nation. The recent decision to reference the Code Council’s International Plumbing Code as their code of reference will dramatically help to advance these efforts.

Whittier, CA (PRWEB) June 21, 2010

Interaction between the International Code Council and stakeholders in Colombia’s building sector has reached a new level with a new Memorandum of Understanding and an initial decision to reference the International Plumbing Code as the code of reference. Over the past several years, the Code Council has been strengthening relationships with Colombia’s building sector stakeholders, including the Instituto Colombiano de Normas Técnicas y Certificación (ICONTEC; Colombian Institute of Standards and Certification) and the Asociación de Profesionales de Conducción de Fluidos (APROCOF; Association of Professional Water Engineers), and academia such as Universidad de lost Andes.

This relationship took a major step forward as a result of a workshop promoted by APROCOF involving key Code Council staff and Colombian stakeholders. Recently, the Code Council’s Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas (PMG) Group Executive Director, Jay Peters, PMG’s Director of Industry Relations, Shawn Martin, and Global Services Director, Sylvana Ricciarini conducted a three-day workshop in Bogota. The workshop was promoted by APROCOF as part of the “Third Congress of Hydraulic and Sanitary Facilities.”

While in Colombia for the workshop, the PMG Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the ICC and APROCOF which unites two leaders in the plumbing industry. These respected teams have joined forces to create initiatives that will be mutually beneficial for each organization as well as their respective members and residents. Co-op initiatives will develop and cross promote products, members will enjoy added-value through information sharing and other efforts, and each other’s education and training programs will be leveraged whenever possible.

“This is a very important advancement for both the Code Council and the nation of Colombia,” said Code Council CEO Rick Weiland. Mr. Peters added, “APROCOF and ICONTEC are highly regarded organizations in Colombia, so when they performed a very thorough technical evaluation of the model codes available and initially chose the International Plumbing Code as a code of reference, we were extremely proud and grateful.”

“This is just the beginning of a lot of work that will lead us to great accomplishments,” added German Flechás, Vice President of APROCOF. “ICONTEC and the ICC can count on us to attain the goals proposed.”

Hundreds of engineers, architects, contractors, even the general public attended the intensive sessions that began with an overview of the comprehensive provisions in the IPC. Transition, implementation and verification aspects that are critical to ensure that the initial implementation process is seamless and smooth were also reviewed.

This was followed by an overview of the Code Council, including the code development process scope and highlights. Aspects of green plumbing covering both the recently published International Green Construction Code (IGCC) and what is happening around the world with regards to sustainable plumbing and related provisions in the IPC were reviewed in detail.

The global sanitation crisis, ICC Evaluation Services, including ICC-ES PMG Listing Service and SAVE (Sustainable Attributes Verification and Evaluation), along with certification services for plumbing products were also covered.

Ms. Ricciarini, who has coordinated these efforts from the very beginning said, “We are proud to be able to offer our plumbing codes and related services to assist Colombia to improve the quality of plumbing and water conservation offerings.”

While the initial seminar was both comprehensive and information-rich, additional training consisting of custom-tailored curriculum will be developed based on Colombia’s technical, academic and industry-specific needs. The ICC will also continue to provide extensive assistance with the transition process along the way. And, a delegation from APROCOF plans to attend and participate in ICC’s Annual Conference in North Carolina in October.

For more information on this adoption or to learn more about ICC’s PMG codes and related services, contact the PMG Resource Center at 1-888-ICC-SAFE, x4PMG or PMGResourceCenter(at)iccsafe(dot)org.

The International Code Council (ICC) publishes building safety, fire prevention and energy efficiency codes that are used in the construction of residential and commercial buildings. Most U. S. cities, counties and states choose the I-Codes based on their outstanding quality. The ICC’s Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas (PMG) Group is devoted exclusively to providing PMG products and support to jurisdictions and construction industry professionals across the country and around the globe, with one or more PMG codes adopted in 49 states. The more than 200 superior products and related services were developed specifically by and for plumbing and mechanical professionals. Contact the PMG Group for additional information at 1-888-ICC-SAFE, x4PMG, PMGResourceCenter(at)iccsafe(dot)org, or visit iccsafe. org.

PharmaOmega. com Announces Free Omega 3 Trial Program in Response to CNN Feature Exposing Widespread Omega 3 Deficiency

PharmaOmega announced today a program to offer a free trial of their concentrated omega 3 pharmaceutical grade "Life" product in response to CNN feature exposing a widespread omega 3 deficiency.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) September 25, 2007

PharmaOmega announced today a program to offer a free trial of their concentrated omega 3 pharmaceutical grade "Life" product in response to CNN feature exposing a widespread omega 3 deficiency.

In a special feature that aired six times this past weekend, CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta examined how we Americans really are what we eat. All aspects of the American diet were covered in the story - what we eat, how much, what's missing, and what the effects are.

In particular, the CNN Special Investigation Unit story reported that we are getting too much omega 6 (primarily from soybean oil) and not enough omega-3 fish oil in our diets. This imbalance has been shown to lead to the psychiatric disorders that are currently plaguing the American population. Dr. Gupta interviewed CDR Joseph R. Hibbeln, MD, of the National Institutes of Health and National Institutes of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, who has extensively studied the connection between omega-3 deficiency and mental health issues such as depression and bi-polar disorder.

"We're excited to see CNN focusing on this important issue: the deficiency of Omega 3's in today's diets," stated Jason Way, VP Customer Experience of NourishLife. "Our mission is to address nutritional deficiencies, so having CNN speak out goes to the core of what we are all about. I'm hopeful that their feature story will raise awareness and motivate people to act to improve their health". As the web's premier source of omega-3 information, research and news, PharmaOmega creates specialty omega 3 nutrition products of the highest concentration, quality and purity (www. PharmaOmega. com).

The company has launched a free trial program to provide their Life Omega 3 to help address the widespread deficiency and related health issues, particularly depression. "It's in everyone's best interest to consume more Omega 3's", stated Mark Nottoli, co-founder of NourishLife. "That's why I decided to augment CNN's education efforts by making our concentrated and purified Omega 3 available to everyone." The free trial program is available on the company's website at: www. pharmaomega. com/shop/freetrial/omega3-news-cnn. aspx (http://www. pharmaomega. com/shop/freetrial/omega3-news-cnn. aspx)

Innovator of the Heimlich Maneuver to be Featured on the VoiceAmerica Talk Radio Network

Henry Heimlich, innovator of The Heimlich Maneuver, to be featured on Whole Person Healing via Body, Mind and Spirit with radio host Rustum Roy on the VoiceAmerica Health & Wellness Channel on Saturday, November 28 at 9 AM Pacific Time.

Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) November 26, 2009

On Saturday, November 28, Henry Heimlich, MD, will guest on VoiceAmericaTM Health & Wellness Channel, the Whole Person Healing via Body, Mind and Spirit show with host, Rustum Roy (www. voiceamerica. com), with the episode titled, Courage and Persistence of Henry Heimlich. Whole Person Healing brings the most authoritative experts from all over the world to discuss the best information on the healing of body, mind and spirit.
(http://www. wholepersonhealing. org (http://www. wholepersonhealing. org)).

Henry Heimlich has earned the title as the 'Edison' of novel, whole person healing. No other physician has become a noun as in the 'Heimlich': nor has any other individual innovation resulted in such useful, widespread, cost-effective health for such numbers. This episode provides snapshots of these innovations for a period of over sixty years. His innovations start with the use of malariotherapy for neurosyphilis in the 1920s and moves on to the Heimlich flutter valve for the chest surgery. Then his contributions continue with 'The Heimlich Maneuver'--first applied to choking, expanded to drowning victims, and then to asthma--and most recently a return to malariotherapy for AIDS. The learning which listeners will gain from this marvelous living history will be threefold: the amazing depth of resistance by the medical hierarchy to any whole person healing approach; the persistence required; and the role of not working for money. http://www. heimlichinstitute. org (http://www. heimlichinstitute. org)

The show is hosted by Prof. Rustum Roy, one of the world's leading materials scientists, bringing his unique perspective as a member elected to five National Academies of Science/Engineering of the U. S., Russia, Japan, Sweden and India--to bear on the major health topics of our times. Prof. Roy's decade of work and involvement in the WPH community including all modalities from all traditions, covering the range from QiGong and Ayurveda, to Naturopathy and Homeopathy, will expose the listeners to the most significant new scientific and medical knowledge and thoroughly tested wisdom from the respective experts.

For the last 20 years Prof. Roy has spent half his time bringing together the many different groups representing the world's wisdom on healing of body, mind, and spirit--via body or mind or spirit--under the banner of the non-profit Friends of Health, the initiator of this show on VoiceAmerica™ Health & Wellness Channel.

Couple Reveals How To Revitalize and Strengthen Marriage

Couple Reveals How To Revitalize and Strengthen Marriage

Both in their late forties, they wrote Get Your Wife Interested In Sex -- Again! to help other couples revitalize their sex lives so their sexual aspect of their relationship can strengthen their marriage. “Sex isn’t just icing on the cake. It is another important way of relating and connecting as husband and wife. Think of a marriage as a four-footed stool with each leg representing the emotional connection, mental connection, spiritual connection and then the physical connection. And contrary to what people think, marital sex can get better and better as the years go by.”

Tulsa, OK (PRWEB) May 26, 2006

Married for over 20 years, Scott and Lori Phillips have witnessed how many of life’s trials can affect all aspects of a marital relationship but hits a couple’s sex life particularly hard. Unfortunately, many people -- especially wives -- don’t realize just how important a healthy sex life is in a marriage.

“A great sex life isn’t the solution to marital problems, but it definitely fortifies a couple to face just about anything together,” Phillips said. “The biological act of sex itself is a bonding ritual. And, when there is a mind-body connection as there should be during marital sex, it brings a couple closer each time.”

The couple revealed that sex was a problem for them during certain periods of their marriage. There was a big difference between their libidos, for one thing, and then outside influences hit their bedroom hard.

“We’ve faced major crisis in our marriage, one right after the other,” Phillips said. “Scott had a heart attack; we lost our little boy to a terminal illness. Then, there were the endless daily challenges like sheer exhaustion and just plain being annoyed at each other.”

New Eco-Hostel Designs and Models Unveiled

New Eco-Hostel Designs and Models Unveiled

After receiving an important Exclusive Right To Negotiate for three acres on the picturesque Humboldt Bay of Northern California, The Humboldt Bay Center for Sustainable Living unveils preliminary site designs. The innovative green design for the main lodge was created by Julian Berg and Joyce Plath in collaboration with world-renowned architect Sim Van Der Ryn. Through a service learning engagement, Humboldt State University engineering students were tapped to propose experimental eco-cottage designs for six satellite units.

Eureka, CA (PRWEB) December 5, 2007

After receiving an Exclusive Right to Negotiate on three acres of the City's waterfront, The Humboldt Bay Center for Sustainable Living (HBCSL) is hosting a public unveiling of site and building designs for the waterfront Eco-Hostel from 1:00 to 2:00 PM on Wednesday, December 12, 2007. This event features a new site plan and six models of cottages designed and constructed by Engineering 215--Introduction to Design students from Humboldt State University (HSU) as part of a local Service Learning ("education in action") partnership.

The site design was created by Julian Berg and Joyce Plath in collaboration with world-renowned architect Sim Van Der Ryn. It calls for a 7500 square foot central hostel building, three acres of gardens and educational displays, and small cottages that feature the most experimental green building strategies. HSU engineering students were tapped to propose the cottage designs. Six student teams designed and constructed scaled models of hostel cottages using materials such as papercrete, aerated concrete, structural concrete insulated panels (SCIPs) and a modern interpretation of a traditional Yurok plank house. Each student effort incorporates cutting edge thinking about green design.

"The quality of the students' research is remarkable." said HBCSL's President, Sean Armstrong. "We asked them to create designs that were both provocative and practical, and they delivered like professionals."

In the course of researching green design students visited a wood sided house that had been sealed and stained a nutty brown with fryer grease, examined a shed made of papercrete blocks (shredded phone books combined with cement), and consulted with elders of the Yurok tribe on how to redesign the traditional plank house as an above ground residence. Environmental Engineering instructor Lonny Grafman provided design guidelines, feedback and expertise to his engineering students. Representatives of the HBCSL's Board set up the design criteria and connected the students with local builders and innovative homeowners.

The public is invited to the official unveiling, awards ceremony and viewing of these displays on Wednesday, December 12th, 2007 from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at the Adorni Center, 1011 W. Waterfront Drive at the end of L St in Eureka, California.

Cargo Security Alliance

Cargo Security Alliance

MPS and GSC Join Forces To Address Cargo Security Issues

(PRWEB) September 4, 2004

“Serving the security needs of the Global Intermodal Transportation Industry is our vision at MPS; establishing this new strategic alliance with Global Secure Cargo (GSC) and the creation of the Logistics/Monitoring Center (LMC) is a natural evolution for us”, said John Bennett, CEO of MPS speaking at a corporate gathering in Ft. Lauderdale.

Bennett continued, “… It’s not easy to keep pace with technological changes, while staying abreast of shifting requirements, needs and directions in the marketplace. The world is a different place today. The need for various types and methods – as well as levels of security -- is imperative, in order to protect world trade and the world’s economies. We here at MPS are exceptionally happy with the alliance we have created with (GSC). The concept of 24/7 monitoring has been a cornerstone in the design of our corporate development strategy. Along with our strategic partner GSC, MPS will continue as the provider of the “total security solution” to the international trade community. Together, we will remain a leader in the worlds maritime and intermodal transport security arena.”

The LMC situated inside a 24,000 sq. ft. building, in Deerfield Beach, Fl., is not only state of the art, but is DOD (Department of Defense) certified, designed specially to house monitoring and dispatch. The LMC is fully self-sufficient relative to power and control systems, and will have complete redundancy in both computer and back up systems – both on-site and off. The LMC will be staffed around-the-clock with operators tracking and monitoring client containers and cargo – as well as ships, floating storage units (FSU’s), and the like.

The facility also serves as corporate headquarters for MPS and home to GSC’s U. S. based operations. Nick Smith, CEO of GSC said in a phone interview that: “Everyone in our company and all those affiliated with this venture… are quite excited about everything that’s taking place, and for good reason. In July, our product launch; August, formalizing arrangements with MPS; September, the Maritime Expo in New York (Sept 14th & 15th); and in October, the Eyefortransport Cargo Security Forum in Washington DC (Oct 18th & 19th). For a relatively new company, we’ve been quite busy.”

About GSC:

Global Secure Cargo was formally organized at the end of 2003 and immediately proceeded with the development of the most advanced Satellite tracking and security device available for the Cargo Container Shipping Industry. GSC accomplished this goal in September of 2004 with the SCS101DT. This state of the art device integrating Inmarsat D+ and GSM technologies, form the first fully redundant dual technology tracking and security system for the container industry. The SCS101DT has complete Global coverage, operating anywhere on Earth -- land or water.

GSC is an innovative company whose fundamental purposes are the creation, production, and marketing of the SCS 101. The SCS 101 is a state of the art INMARSAT D+ microburst communication technology used in combination with a GSM GPRS radio unit, which allows continuous tracking of cargo through a unique system that it is fully redundant. Through the use of a secure Internet platform for conducting real-time tracking, we allow users to directly interact with commercial back-end data systems. Consequently, customers know where their cargo is from origin to destination. Our unique leasing system operates within the confines of a cost-effective and profitable economic model. This design is uniquely suited for the cargo container industry.

GSCÂ’s technology allows continuous satellite or GSM communications from container to container, from container to logistic center, from logistic center to container, and from logistic center to authorities and customers. We are not only concerned with theft and damage to our customerÂ’s cargo, but also with the potential threat to the people of the world. Built on years of experience in satellite tracking and maritime security, our dedication to keep international trade safely flowing contributes to our customerÂ’s success and satisfaction.

GSCÂ’s security applications have been validated through rigorous testing and have been proven effective in demanding environments, and should be considered an essential element in global cargo security.

Visionary Launches International Virtual Assistants Day

Visionary Launches International Virtual Assistants Day

Local Entrepreneur Spearheads First Internet-based International Convention

BALTIMORE, MD (PRWEB) May 16, 2006 –

For most professionals Friday, May 19, 2006 will be an ordinary workday – but not for Sharon Williams, an African American Virtual Assistant, who along with over 5,000 colleagues worldwide will be celebrating the first annual International Virtual Assistants Day (IVAD) during the industry’s inaugural convention.

In 2003 President of The 24 Hour Secretary, Sharon Williams founded the Alliance for Virtual Businesses, an assembly of virtual assistants whose mission is to educate the global business community about the benefits of working with virtual professionals. In 2006, she envisioned that if these same internationally-based Virtual Assistants could eliminate geographic boundaries, they would participate in an educational summit showcasing their skills, newest technologies and best business practices. Identifying internet technology that could facilitate the international convergence she dreamed of, Sharon founded the Online International Virtual Assistants Convention (OIVAC) and brainstormed with personal and professional contacts to conduct the Virtual Assistant industry’s first international online convention.

Williams says, “the online convention, scheduled on May 18-20, 2006, will welcome registrants from Australia, France, England, New Zealand, China, India, Venezuela, Canada and other countries. In the 20 to 30 inquiries I receive from callers each week, 85 percent of them openly identify themselves as women seeking an opportunity to take control of their careers and become serious business owners.”

“VAs are making important contributions to the growth and stability of small businesses everywhere, and to recognize these contributions, the third Friday of May, annually, has been registered with Chase’s Calendar of Events as International Virtual Assistants Day (IVAD). This day acknowledges all of the virtual professionals who work so hard to honor our creed: Dedication, Experience, Expertise and Determination to Succeed (DEEDS), ” says Williams.

Virtual Assistants or VAs are independent entrepreneurs who work remotely and use the latest technology to deliver professional administrative, creative, managerial, technical, business back-office and/or personal support services to busy professionals. Clients only pay for the time actually spent working on projects and often retain a fixed amount of hours per month for service.

Williams, a former Baltimore City government employee, is a VA pioneer who started her business, The 24 Hour Secretary, long before the Internet Revolution. Specializing in digital dictation and transcription services and administrative and marketing support, her company literally operates 24 hours per day. Utilizing the latest technology at her finger tips, she and her expert team of internationally-based Virtual Assistants assist busy and often overwhelmed executives, entrepreneurs and managers 24 hours a day, every day. She is a Master Virtual Assistant, a certified Professional Real Estate Virtual Assistant, a mentor and author of three books.
