Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week

Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week

September 19 - September 25, 2010 is International Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week. During this week we renew our commitment to educate, support and advocate on behalf of mitochondrial disease patients and their families.

Boston, MA (PRWEB) September 22, 2010

The mitochondria act as the “powerhouse” of the cell to produce energy for the body to live. Mitochondrial disease (http://www. mitoaction. org) is an energy metabolism disorder that affects babies, children, and adults of all ages, races, and gender. Experts agree that at least 1 in 4000 individuals have mitochondrial disease; however, "Mito" may be under diagnosed until improvements in diagnosis and awareness occur.

Symptoms of “Mito” (http://www. mitoaction. org/mito-faq) vary in type and severity, and commonly include muscle weakness, fatigue, seizures, gastrointestinal dysfunction, developmental delay, vision and hearing loss, and organ failure. Today there is no cure for mitochondrial disease; treatment is focused on energy conservation and vitamin therapy.

Mitochondrial dysfunction has been related to other diseases including autism, diabetes, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

Join MitoAction in our mission to educate and raise awareness of this disabling disease by wearing a green awareness ribbon and taking steps for together for Mito.

On Wednesday, September 22nd, families and friends are encouraged to "Light a Light for Mito” in honor of all who are afflicted by Mito and in memory of the babies, children and adults who have lost their battle with mitochondrial disease.

MitoAction is a 501(c)3 charity formally incorporated in 2005 to provide programs and resources centered on support, education, and advocacy for patients and families affected by mitochondrial disease.

Learn more, show your support and request your green awareness ribbon and your free awareness kit at www. MitoAction. org (http://www. mitoaction. org).

The National Sleep Foundation and Clinilabs Announce the Great American Sleep Challenge

The National Sleep Foundation and Clinilabs Announce the Great American Sleep Challenge

The National Sleep Foundation and Clinilabs launch campaign to help Americans improve the quality of their Zzzzzs.

Washington D. C. (PRWEB) January 10, 2007

Does having more energy, feeling refreshed and zipping through the day with a rejuvenated spirit sound intriguing or, maybe even impossible? It could be easier to achieve than you think. One solution may be to get a better night's sleep! An astonishing 70 million Americans experience sleep problems that impact relationships, health, productivity at work and even driving skills. In order to combat this growing epidemic, the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) and Clinilabs will launch the NSF Great American Sleep ChallengeTM, a nationwide, online campaign designed to focus America's attention on getting better sleep.

Beginning February 5 through March 19, 2007, Americans who want to achieve better sleep and improve their overall well-being are encouraged log on to www. sleepfoundation. org/challenge (http://www. sleepfoundation. org/challenge) and sign up. It is easy to participate; all of the tools, which include a questionnaire to set desired sleep goals and a one week, online journal, are presented in consumer-friendly language. Once the Sleep Challenge is completed, participants will have the ability to assess their sleep needs and be one step closer to feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and ready to go. And, by participating, all entrants qualify to win "dreamy" sleep-related prizes.

"Day to day, nationwide our lifestyles are compromised because of the quality of our sleep. The goal of the Sleep Challenge is simple: to help Americans get better sleep," said NSF's CEO, Richard L. Gelula. "It is established that there is a direct association between how Americans are sleeping and their overall behavior, mood, and performance. There is solid evidence that the quality and quantity of our sleep plays a significant role in our daily lives. NSF and Clinilabs believe that the Sleep Challenge will provide eye-opening results for those plagued with poor sleep habits and will also educate about how to get the sleep we need."

Participants are encouraged to enlist as many people they can. Everyone who participates will be entered into a drawing to win sleep-related prizes. Inviting others to join the Sleep Challenge can be done by sending an e-card or e-mail to family, friends and colleagues. NSF and Clinilabs aspire to have all of America on the fast track to better sleep.

If an individual's Sleep Challenge goals are not met, and trouble sleeping continues to be a problem, the easy-to-print sleep journal can be shared with a physician or local sleep specialist. Local sleep centers can be found by visiting http://www. sleepfoundation. org/sleepcenters (http://www. sleepfoundation. org/sleepcenters).

The NSF Great American Sleep Challenge is a promotion of National Sleep Awareness Week (NSAW). NSAW is the week leading up to the return of Daylight Saving Time, March 5 - 11, 2007 when clocks "spring forward" and people throughout the country may lose an hour of needed sleep. Launched in 1998, National Sleep Awareness Week is an opportunity for communities and organizations to partner in drawing attention to the importance of quality sleep and the treatment of sleep problems for good health, productivity, and safety. A highlight of the Week's activities is the release of NSF's annual Sleep in America poll, the only annual barometer of how Americans are sleeping. This year's poll will focus on the sleep habits and attitudes of American women.

URAC Names New CEO

URAC Names New CEO

Health plan business executive, policy expert and former government health agency official named to head top national accreditation company.

Washington, D. C. (PRWEB) September 29, 2005

The Board of Directors of URAC announced Alan P. Spielman will serve as the president and chief executive officer (CEO). Beginning Oct. 17, Spielman will assume the leadership role at URAC and he will make his first national appearance in his new role at URACÂ’s Quality Summit on October 26, 2005 in Phoenix, AZ. URAC is an independent, nonprofit organization well known as a leader in promoting health care quality through its accreditation and certification programs.

Charles Stellar, executive vice president of AmericaÂ’s Health Insurance Plans and URAC board chairman, said the board unanimously selected Spielman after a national search based on his strong record of executive leadership and his personal commitment to quality in health care.

“Alan is a natural choice to become URAC’s new chief executive,” Stellar said. “His extensive background in health care policy, business management, legislative and regulatory issues, and health benefits strategies will further advance URAC’s mission to promote quality and efficiency through accreditation and education, as well as to bring value to our customers and to the public as the recognized leader in health care management quality and innovation. The Board is extremely energized about his selection and his capabilities as URAC shapes an evolving health care market.”

Spielman has more than three decades of proven leadership and experience in health care policy and strategy, and a track record of achieving results, working in both the private and public sectors. He comes to URAC most recently from his position as senior advisor for health care reimbursement policy at Covington & Burling, a leading global law firm.

“The challenge of establishing viable quality standards in today’s environment requires a degree of leadership that blends innovation with practicality and flexibility,” Spielman said. “I have been very much an agent of change throughout my career--an executive who blends strategic, operational and regulatory considerations in a way that advances the organization to higher levels. In addition to traditional accreditation programs for medical management functions, URAC has a unique emphasis on consumer-focused health trends and health care IT

Accreditation, and that forward thinking aligns perfectly with my focus on anticipating and shaping key trends.”  (MORE)

“Alan’s experience in regulatory matters is an excellent fit for URAC,” Stellar said. “URAC is the most recognized health care accreditation organization at the state level. Right now, 35 states and the District of Columbia recognize one or more of URAC’s accreditation programs, and several federal agencies also recognize URAC accreditation. That means accredited organizations which operate in more than one state can meet regulatory requirements through a single URAC accreditation process, which reduces the regulatory burden for everyone.”

Spielman has successfully advised a number of health care companies and employers on health benefits, reimbursement policies, and strategic Medicare issues. Prior to joining Covington in 2004, he was general manager of federal programs and vice president of special markets at Medco Health Solutions, Inc., a pharmacy benefits manager (PBM). Spielman also has 16 years of experience at the BlueCross BlueShield Association, where he served as senior vice president of federal programs. In that role, Spielman had business responsibility for the BluesÂ’ largest health insurance plan, the Federal Employees Program, its national Medicare intermediary contract, and its network of Medicare managed care plans. In the public sector, Spielman served eight years in the Health Care Financing Administration (now the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services), where he held key positions pertaining to state reimbursement plans and developing Medicare payment policies and quality standards, and served as legislative analyst for the Congressional Research Service.

Spielman holds an MBA in health care marketing/management from Loyola College and a BA from the Johns Hopkins University, where he also continued graduate study in health economics and has attained the Managed Care Professional designation. He has published several articles on health care marketing topics.

Current Economic Situation Prompts Increased Smoking, Delay in Quit Attempts Middle and Low-income Americans Hit Hardest

Current Economic Situation Prompts Increased Smoking, Delay in Quit Attempts Middle and Low-income Americans Hit Hardest

One in Four Smokers Stressed About State of Economy Smoking More on Daily Basis

Washington, DC (PRWEB) November 10, 2008

Today the American Legacy Foundation® - the nation's largest public health foundation dedicated to reducing tobacco use in the U. S. -- announced the results of a new survey conducted on their behalf by Harris Interactive which found that stress about the ongoing financial downturn is having a clear and immediate effect on smokers.

Seventy-seven percent of current smokers report increased stress levels due to the current state of the economy and two-thirds of those smokers say this stress has had an effect on their smoking.

November marks Lung Cancer Awareness Month, a time when smokers might reflect on the life threatening nature of their addiction, yet this new data indicates smokers are suffering more than ever as stress is causing smokers to delay a quit attempt, increase the number of cigarettes they are smoking, or switch to a cheaper brand instead of quitting. Moreover, some former smokers report they are starting to smoke again because of the stress over the financial situation.

Among the survey findings:
One in four smokers stressed about the economy say this stress has caused them to smoke more cigarettes per day, higher among women (31%) than men (17%). Those smokers with lower household incomes are especially affected by the financial crisis. A greater percentage of stressed smokers with a household income of less than $35k reported smoking more cigarettes per day (38%) due to the current state of the economy, compared to those with household incomes of $35-74k (24%) and those with incomes of more than $75k (13%). In addition, a greater percentage of middle-income ($35-74.9k) stressed smokers have delayed their quit attempts because of stress over the economy (20%) than those with household incomes of under $35k (14%) and to a greater extent more than those stressed higher-income (more than $75k household income) smokers (6%). Unemployed smokers stressed about the economy reported smoking more cigarettes per day (29%) in greater numbers than full-time or self-employed stressed smokers (17%).

"We are especially concerned about how the economy is impacting those struggling to quit and stay quit," said Cheryl G. Healton, Dr. P. H., president and CEO of the American Legacy Foundation. The survey found that 7 percent of current smokers surveyed had started smoking again due to stress over the economic crisis, even though they had previously quit. Furthermore, 9 percent of stressed-out former smokers said the state of the economy had tempted them to start smoking again. Even more telling, 13 percent of stressed smokers say their stress about the economy has caused them to postpone their plans to quit.

"It is no secret that stress is a major factor in smoking habits," Dr. Healton added. "The turbulent global stock markets have caused virtually every American a certain level of stress. Those who also struggle with an addiction to tobacco products are at an increased disadvantage as they contemplate quitting, or feel the urge to smoke more cigarettes. Quitting smoking under normal circumstances is one of the most difficult things you can do. Smokers need to create a comprehensive quit plan, use the right medications or nicotine replacement products to help them with their quit attempt, and get social support from family, friends and colleagues. It's challenging to make a comprehensive attempt to quit when issues like job security, uncertainty about the future, and the worries of your family and friends keep you from having all the resources you need to tackle this very difficult addiction."

2,375 U. S. Adults aged 18+, of whom 1,347 had ever smoked participated in the survey.
The survey also found economic stress is causing smokers to re-evaluate their buying habits when it comes to tobacco products:
One-fifth of smokers stressed about the state of the economy have switched to a cheaper brand to save money. More stressed smokers with household incomes of less than $35k (28%) reported brand-switching compared to those with household incomes of more than $50k (12%). One quarter of those with incomes of $35-$49k reported switching brands to save money.

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month and November 20 marks the Great American Smoke Out--both serve as important reminders about the ongoing issue of tobacco addiction in our country, and the 45 million Americans who smoke, many of whom desperately want to quit. Each year, approximately 70 percent of smokers say they want to quit, but only about five percent are successful long-term.

Now more than ever, smokers need reliable and relatable information about quitting.

Earlier this year, Legacy and a coalition of public health groups launched EX®, a quit smoking program that encourages smokers to "re-learn life without cigarettes." The campaign aims to educate smokers about the daily triggers that make them want to smoke, and preps them how to overcome triggers with practice and preparation.

Financial stress is a prime smoking trigger and smokers can learn valuable tools to help them prepare for a quit attempt by visiting www. BecomeAnEX. org. The Web site features action-oriented tools and information to help smokers prepare for quitting by developing a personalized plan, as well offering a virtual community, where smokers can reach out to others for support and to share stories about their quit attempts.

It is a widely held belief among the public health community that setting a quit date and planning your quit attempt around that date is an important step in the quit process. With the American Cancer Society's Great American Smoke Out slated for November 20 this year, smokers have an ideal date to choose as their quit date, alongside millions of other smokers, both to add years to their lives and dollars back to their wallets.

November is also a powerful month to quit as it marks Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Lung cancer is the nation's number-one cancer killer. Despite this fact, there is no test or exam that's sure to catch the disease at its earliest stage. That's why prevention - quitting smoking or never starting - remains so important to reducing lung cancer.

About 85 percent of people diagnosed with lung cancer are current or former smokers. Lung cancer sufferers also suffer from an unfair social stigma - the perception that they had the power to avoid a lung cancer diagnosis if only they had been able to quit. For more information about lung cancer, please visit www. americanlegacy. org/codeblue (http://www. americanlegacy. org/codeblue).

The American Legacy Foundation® is dedicated to building a world where young people reject tobacco and anyone can quit. Located in Washington, D. C., the foundation develops programs that address the health effects of tobacco use, especially among vulnerable populations disproportionately affected by the toll of tobacco, through grants, technical assistance and training, partnerships, youth activism, and counter-marketing and grassroots marketing campaigns. The Foundation's programs include truth®, a national youth smoking prevention campaign that has been cited as contributing to significant declines in youth smoking; EX®, an innovative public health program designed to speak to smokers in their own language and change the way they approach quitting; research initiatives exploring the causes, consequences and approaches to reducing tobacco use; and a nationally-renowned program of outreach to priority populations. The American Legacy Foundation was created as a result of the November 1998 Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) reached between attorneys general from 46 states, five U. S. territories and the tobacco industry. Visit http://www. americanlegacy. org (http://www. americanlegacy. org).

The American Legacy Foundation® is equipped with a VideoLink ReadyCam™ television studio system, providing you with faster, easier access to the nation's leading tobacco prevention and cessation experts. From this in-house broadcast studio, Legacy can offer immediate access to its experts to comment on breaking news, new research publications, or any news related to youth smoking prevention, adult quit smoking programs, or any issue related to smoking. The studio is connected directly to the Vyvx fiber network and is always available for live or pre-taped interviews. To arrange an interview, please contact Julia Cartwright at 202-454-5596.

Methodology
This survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Interactive via its QuickQuerySM online omnibus service on behalf of The American Legacy Foundation between October 28th and 30th, 2008 among 2,375 U. S. adults aged 18 years and older, of whom 1,347 have ever smoked. Results were weighted as needed for region, age within gender, education, household income and race/ethnicity. Propensity score weighting was also used to adjust for respondents' propensity to be online. No estimates of theoretical sampling error can be calculated; a full methodology is available.

At DevLearn ‘09, LETSI Demos Tomorrow’s Software Standards Today

At DevLearn ‘09, LETSI Demos Tomorrow’s Software Standards Today

This first-of-its kind public event by LETSI showcases interoperability standards that bring online education into the Web era

San Jose, Calif. (PRWEB) November 9, 2009

At 5 p. m. local time Tuesday, November 10th, in the Valley Room at San Jose’s Fairmont Hotel, a group of companies aim to speed up the slow moving world of software standards. They will discuss their approach and demonstrate running code at a meeting of the International Federation for Learning, Education, and Training Systems Interoperability, LETSI (https://http://www. letsi. org), which is being held in conjunction with the eLearning Guild’s annual DevLearn (http://www. elearningguild. com/content. cfm? selection=doc.1275) conference at the Fairmont.

Interoperability standards from international standards organizations like the IEEE and ISO have a real economic impact in the education world. Major education projects, often government funded, typically specify compliance with those standards in order to reduce costs, assure durability, and avoid vendor lock-in. But the traditional standards cycle is too slow -- all existing elearning standards have their roots in the pre-web world of client-server software. As educators around the world explore new ideas and techniques, integration costs will prohibit the spread of prototypes and beta products unless they can rely on broadly adopted interface standards.

Case in point: Existing standards for how a student’s online learning activity communicates with the learning management system (LMS) tracking his progress are based on protocols developed 20 years ago. At Tuesday’s meeting, the volunteers who participated in LETSI’s first project will demonstrate, with running examples, the potential of a modern approach.

Participating Companies

Booz Allen Hamilton and Rustici Software have instrumented their LMS products for web service communications.

Imedia. it, the Southwest Research Institute®, Engineering and Computer Simulations, OutStart, Intelligent Automation, and Booz Allen Hamilton are modifying existing courses and, in some cases, their technology to use the new communications framework.

Each will demonstrate delivery of elearning with runtime communication across platforms (e. g., LMS, browser, PC desktop, mobile) and with non-browser content like simulations, games, virtual worlds, and intelligent tutors.

LETSI Commentary

“Over the last 10 years, the web has changed our lives – the way we shop, the way we read, and even the way we date,” notes Avron Barr, LETSI’s Communications Chair. “But education and job training have been slow to adopt new technology. One barrier to innovation is the lack of modern interoperability standards.”

“OutStart is an aggressive supporter of standards that help the industry move learning from an era of proprietary platforms to one where content works across multiple systems and is delivered from many sources,” said Massood Zarrabian, president and CEO of OutStart. “The LETSI initiative’s laser-beam focus on agility and time-to-value can create great benefit to vendors and users alike.”

Mike Rustici, CEO of Rustici Software and organizer of the LETSI demos at DevLearn explains that “By moving to web services, LETSI envisions a future learning environment supporting mobile, multi-player, immersive, and collaborative learning activities distributed across multiple systems.”

“The technology is there. To overcome institutional inertia and market Balkanization, new systems must interoperate easily with legacy systems. LETSI has explored an approach that could speed up the standards process and also provide an interim solution for early adopters,” said Don Holmes, CEO of Imedia. it in Houston and Chairman of the IEEE Learning Technology Standards Committee.

“LETSI’s software-first process, open-to-the-public working groups, and no-strings-attached licensing policy are designed to address real interoperability issues in the critical formative years – expediting the market introduction of new ideas and techniques,” points out Chuck Allen, Principal Consultant, HRInterop, LLC, and founder of the HR-XML Consortium, Inc.

About LETSI

LETSI was formed in 2007 by a handful of organizations committed to supporting innovation and open standards for the next wave of online learning tools. LETSI turns the standards cycle around: after an open requirements gathering phase, a small group of LETSI volunteers starts the specification development process by testing their evolving solution in their own systems.

Adobe Systems, Booz Allen Hamilton, the IEEE Computer Society, and the Korean Institute for Electronic Commerce are LETSI’s 2009 sponsors. LETSI is collaborating with international standards bodies, including IEEE and ISO, to help them produce more mature standards faster – in time for broad adoption of new technologies.

Dynamic Digital Signage Enhances the Vacation Experience at Downtown East

Dynamic Digital Signage Enhances the Vacation Experience at Downtown East

Downtown East chose the Scala InfoChannel solution to accommodate their visual communications need, based on the winning features of Scala’s intuitive InfoChannel Designer. Using the Scala InfoChannel suite, Downtown East developed their own customized in-house channel network that was named Happenings Channel, with the initial design templates designed by Click Grafix Pte Ltd. Visually stimulating content that includes event and activities information, ads for entities and promotions as well as videos, is distributed to 12 plasma screens positioned strategically around high traffic areas.

Singapore (PRWEB) October 25, 2006

Downtown East, a popular tourist destination offering a myriad of entertainment choices, harnessed the power of dynamic digital signage to disseminate vital information to its patrons and customers.

Occupying a vast area of 14.7 hectares, the amenities offered by Downtown East include theme parks (Wild Wild Wet and Escape), resorts (Costa Sands Downtown East and Pasir Ris), F&B outlets (foodcourt Rasa Singapura, fast food restaurants etc), retail shops (Watsons, Giordano etc), gaming centres (Zone X and X Square), children's play centre (ExplorerKid) as well as MICE facilities (D'Marquee, function rooms).

Implemented in early April 2005, Downtown East chose the Scala InfoChannel (http://www. scala. com (http://www. scala. com)) solution to accommodate their visual communications need, based on the winning features of Scala's intuitive InfoChannel Designer.

Visitors in the Lobby are fed information from two plasma screens while another screen at the Help Station offers useful assistance to the visitors. A screen at the Walkway provides media rich information as does another plasma outside the Jackpot Room. There are six plasma screens to cater to the crowd at

The Al-fresco Dining and one more screen is positioned ideally at the Resort Check-in Lobby to keep visitors informed.

Happenings Channel is operated and managed by Mr. David Cheong, the Manager of Infocomm Development in Downtown East. The channel operates from one central location and is deployed via an infrastructure consisting LAN transmission from the Network Manager to the three Players and subsequently through an AV Splitter to the 12 screens. As the cabling covers an extensive distance between the screens, VOPEX is used to maintain the quality of the final output. Happenings Channel operates 15 hours a day all year round. The content is updated regularly once a month and whenever required.

The deployment of the Happenings Channel network was implemented with the help of Click Grafix, the Scala Certified distributor and system integrator in the South East region.

The powerful and flexible features of the Scala InfoChannel platform have made it a tool-of-choice for Downtown East. Real Estate the New Career Path for Entrepreneurs

Real Estate the New Career Path for Entrepreneurs

Real Estate is fast becoming the new career path for entrepreneurs, downsized business executives, and even freshly minted college graduates. In his new book entitled "Make Millions Selling Real Estate," due to be released by AMACOM publishing in July, author Jim Remley points out that real estate offers opportunities that other professions lack.

Sutherlin, OR (PRWEB) June 12, 2005

Real Estate is fast becoming the new career path for entrepreneurs, downsized business executives, and even freshly minted college graduates. In his new book entitled “Make Millions Selling Real Estate” due to be released by AMACOM publishing in July author Jim Remley points out that real estate offers opportunities that other professions lack.

“Real Estate offers serious minded business professionals the opportunity to unleash their natural talents in an environment where they will be rewarded directly for their efforts. In most markets real estate professionals operate their business as an independent contractor, which gives them the freedom to make instant decisions on marketing, customer acquisition, customer retention, and service offerings. In the corporate world this is just not possible,” said Remley.

Remley a successful real estate broker himself entered the business in 1989 and within two years became listed in the top 1% of agents in the nation. He then went on to found his own firm, All State Real Estate which has since grown to a network of twelve offices in Southern Oregon. His new book offer insights into the business practices of some of the most productive agents in the nation.

The ranks of the National Association of REALTORS® are growing at an impressive rate, up from roughly 779,000 members three years ago to over a million members today - an impressive 25% increase. Industry experts agree that the surge of interest in real estate is due in part to a robust real estate market that has seen record breaking sales for the last three years. Last year alone saw existing-home sales grow by 15 percent.

According to the REALTOR® Field guide to Income the gross personal income for REALTORS® working at least 40 hours a week is $61,200 per year. But according to Remley this can be measurably increased by modeling top producing agents. Two of his suggestions:

Use Technology

“Nearly one half of agents and brokers who closed 20 transactions or more last year report that they use a personal digital assistant to help them manage their business. In addition highly productive agents are far more likely to have a personal website to help them market their practice, and listings.” said Remley.

Invest in Training

“Productive real estate professionals value education, in fact, 9 out of 10 REALTORS® have some college education, and 21% have completed a bachelor degree. Once agents are in the business they can also obtain advanced designations to help them specialize their business. Agents who obtain these designations on average earn $32,000 more per year than their counter parts that do not.”

So can a real estate agent earn a million dollars selling real estate? Remley says that already thousands of agents across the country are doing just that today. He points to the most successful agents being those that treat their career as a business, not a job.

“Real Estate is not for everyone but it can be an extremely rewarding career for those with a true passion for the industry. The commitment level needed is not unlike a doctor or attorney just beginning to build their business. Often these professionals have to work very hard in the beginning to build a loyal following of satisfied clients, real estate agents must do the same.” stated Remley.

The University of Alabama small business administration center points to these nine characteristics of Successful Entrepreneurs:

An overpowering need to achieve Follow through Positive mental attitude Objectivity A respectful attitude toward money Ability to anticipate developments Resourcefulness Communication abilities Technical Knowledge

What is the outlook for Real Estate in coming months and years? Both the National Association of Builders and the National Association of REALTORS® seem to agree that the market may level off in the coming year, yet neither group predicts a large drop in activity. According to David Lereah, chief economist for the National Association of REALTORS®, the outlook remains positive for real estate investors, homeowners, and agents based on strong demand, low interest rates, and the tax advantages of homeownership.

Remley also points out that today more than 70% of US households own their own home, a record in the United States. He concludes this is good news for real estate practitioners of the future who will be working with these homeowners as they upgrade to larger homes, and purchase second homes.

Make Millions Selling Real Estate (July/AMACOM) by Jim Remley is set for release in July of 2005 but can be ordered now at major book retailers nationwide.

Fighting the Truce -- Identities and the Israel-Hezbollah Cease-fire

Fighting the Truce -- Identities and the Israel-Hezbollah Cease-fire

New book shows identity and ideology at the core of friction in the Middle East

Pasadena, CA (PRWEB) August 23, 2006

Although the cease-fire has been in effect for just over a week Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants clashed again early Saturday in eastern Lebanon. An Israeli-Hezbollah ceasefire that does not lead to cessation of hostilities is a cynical sham at best. Despite the UN brokered truce, deaths from military/militia strikes on both sides of the Israeli-Lebanese border are likely to continue. Even if 30,000 UN and Lebanese soldiers replace the 30,000 Israeli troops in the next month or so, the potential for violence will remain high.

Whether it’s Hezbollah, Hamas, the PLO or Israel, none of the immediate parties will achieve lasting peace without recognition of an unavoidable truth: identity and ideology (http://vision. org/visionmedia/article. aspx? id=1569) matter to everyone. Identity is something we establish at an early age. It is maintained and extended in our search for psychological security. Then ideology soon comes along to tie together the loose ends of identity formation, as Erik Erikson -- the father of modern identity studies -- would say.

“Erikson saw identity and ideology as two sides of the same coin -- take away a person’s identity, and he or she will set about its recreation,” says Dr. David Hulme author of the upcoming book, "Identity, Ideology, and the Future of Jerusalem," published by Palgrave-Macmillan available September 3, 2006.

Looking at the biographies of 14 key players on both sides of the more-than-100-year Arab-Zionist conflict, the book focuses more on the parallels than the differences. These leaders, from Zionism’s Theodor Herzl to Hamas’s Shaykh Yassin, from Israel’s David Ben-Gurion to the PLO’s Yasser Arafat, lived lives with parallel goals for their people, and with identities that were more akin than apart. Understanding the role that identity and ideology played in their lives -- leaders at the center of the impasse -- is crucial to discovering the way forward in today’s ongoing conflict.

Identity asks and answers the question “Who am I?” But identity awareness is only the starting point in resolving intercommunal problems. If there is to be hope for reconciliation and resolution in any of the world’s identity-based conflicts, then “Who am I?” must lead to the much more important question, “Who should I be?” This is about initiating a process by which leaders and publics come to understand the role of identity and ideology in their lives. Because the identity-ideology nexus is not easily self-understood, it requires a process of education and self-examination to bring its reality and consequences to the surface. The resulting change of heart in the personal identity-ideology relationship is the first essential step to broad political change in the Middle East (http://vision. org/visionmedia/article. aspx? id=1569).

“There can be no attempt to destroy identity that will not produce further conflict. What is happening in southern Lebanon, Israel, Gaza and the West Bank is an attempt by all parties to destroy the Other’s identity,” says Hulme.

Magenta Brings Future of AV Extension & Switching to China

Magenta Brings Future of AV Extension & Switching to China

World’s First All-Format Fiber Optic Signal Distribution Platform, Voyager, Launches in Shanghai & Hong Kong

New Milford, CT (PRWEB) October 5, 2010

Following a successful launch in the United States, Europe and Australia, Magenta Research officially debuted the new Voyager Series in China. AV consultants, system integrators and end users were invited to a reception on September 20th in Shanghai and September 22nd in Hong Kong to view the world’s first all-format fiber optic signal distribution platform, Voyager.

The Voyager Series enables pro-AV and digital signage customers to distribute multi-format high-bandwidth signals over fiber at significantly lower costs. Magenta’s Voyager Fiber Optic Signal Distribution Platform is an interoperable set of transmitters, receivers, distribution amplifiers and matrix switchers, which enables any end to end configuration for extension and switching of uncompressed multi-format video and audio, RS-232, IR and 480 Mbps USB 2.0 signals over fiber at distances up to 16.75MI/30KM.

"With the increasing use of fiber in China, Voyager’s unprecedented functionality, flexibility, performance and cost makes it a perfect fit for Digital Signage and Pro AV installations throughout the country and our Hong Kong based Applications, Sales and Support team is perfectly positioned to support our expanding customer base," says Anthony Waung, Managing Director of Magenta Research Asia.

The Voyager series uses a modular building block approach to deliver hundreds of different product configurations with numerous video and auxiliary signal types, fiber types and component types such as n-port transmitters, daisy-chain receivers, 1x7 distribution amplifiers and 8x8 to 320x320 scalable matrix switchers.

While the core FiberMAX engine enables the Voyager platform to define a new price-performance curve for AV distribution over fiber, the new product range also delivers an unprecedented number of unique features with real life benefits. Magenta’s innovative Flex-VCA architecture allows each Voyager transmitter and receiver to support a wide variety of analog and digital video formats through plug and play field interchangeable modules. The ability to easily field configure, upgrade and interchange signal types including video formats greatly increases flexibility in specification, procurement, installation and troubleshooting. With built in auto format conversion and delay free HDCP switching, sources and displays of all supported video types including HDMI, DVI, DisplayPort, VGA and SDI can be interconnected on the same network without the need for external converters, thereby reducing both cost and the number of potential failure points.

For Installations with displays requiring mixed resolutions, the Voyager series utilizes Magenta’s unique ScaleMAX technology to prevent low quality up-scaling on high resolution displays. By configuring each source to the highest resolution and then using broadcast quality downscaling for lower resolution displays, ScaleMAX technology ensures optimal content resolution on each and every display.

Various products within the Voyager family have started shipping and will be available through Magenta's Hong Kong office, established in 2009, providing innovative products and solutions for the presentation, videoconferencing, staging and broadcast markets in Asia.

About Magenta Research:
Serving the pro-AV and digital signage markets, Magenta Research is the industry recognized leader in the transmission, switching and flexible distribution of multi-format video, audio and auxiliary signals over fiber and Cat-X cabling. Its product range includes AV extenders, distribution amplifiers and matrix switchers for DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort, SDI, VGA, and component, composite, S-Video, audio, USB, RS-232 and IR signals. Magenta’s world renowned MultiView, Infinea and Mondo products are benchmarks in field reliability for 24/7 and mission critical environments, and Magenta's newly launched Voyager Series is the world's first all-format fiber optic signal distribution platform. Hundreds of thousands of displays worldwide have been trusted with Magenta in virtually all environments including commercial, industrial, government, military, residential, transport, education, healthcare, retail, hospitality, sports and entertainment.

Tom Bradley Legacy Foundation to Honor Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the 41st Mayor of the City of Los Angeles

Tom Bradley Legacy Foundation to Honor Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the 41st Mayor of the City of Los Angeles

Mayor Villaraigosa, the 41st Mayor of the City of Los Angeles and the first Hispanic Mayor in modern times, has declared his intention to follow in the footsteps of former Mayor Bradley. He stated at his victory celebration, "I am standing here on the shoulders of Tom Bradley"

Los Angeles (PRWEB) September 22, 2005

The Tom Bradley Legacy Foundation has selected Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to be the first recipient of the Foundation's Tom Bradley Legacy Achievement Award.

On Thursday, September 29, at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, Mayor Villaraigosa will be surrounded by friends and supporters to receive the award, together with its challenge to continue Bradley's vision of building Los Angeles as a world-class city, the "Jewel of the Pacific." The event will draw attention to Mayor Bradley's special concern for the environment and the future as a "living legacy" and a bridge to the concerns of the new City administration. The event will be attended by Congresswoman Juanita Millender McDonald, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Congresswoman Diane E. Watson, State Senator Richard Alacorn, State Senator Sheila Kuehl, Supervisor Yvonne B. Burke, Council President Alex Padilla, Council member Wendy Greuel, Councilman Dennis P Zine, Councilman Tom La Bonge, Councilman Jack Weiss, Councilman Bernard C. Parks, Councilman William J. Rosendahl, Councilman Eric Garcetti, Councilwoman Janice Hahn and City Controller Laura Chick.

Mayor Villaraigosa, the 41st Mayor of the City of Los Angeles and the first Hispanic Mayor in modern times, has declared his intention to follow in the footsteps of former Mayor Bradley. He stated at his victory celebration, "I am standing here on the shoulders of Tom Bradley". Mayor Villaraigosa has shown his commitment to not only build Los Angeles as a world-class city but to make it a global sustainable city, by implementing appropriate green technologies citywide, and by working to build the city's role as a world industrial center and marketing center for sustainable technologies.

Tom Bradley was a leader in creating a more sustainable city and was a avid supporter of the environment. Bradley saw the importance, for example, of building a regional rail rapid transportation network to reduce the pollution and congestion caused by trucks and automobiles. Many leaders argued against building an expensive mass transit system, but this impossible task was started during Mayor Bradley's first term in office. Today, with gasoline prices rising to $3.00+ a gallon, the transit system has become a necessity for many students, seniors, and workers. Among his many other "green" initiatives, Bradley also encouraged the TreePeople organization to create an Urban Forest through their challenge to plant a million trees throughout Los Angeles. Under the leadership of TreePeople's founder, Andy Lipkis, the tree project is now flourishing throughout Southern California.

As a practical step to continue this legacy of leadership, the Bradley Legacy Foundation has recently established a Green Technology Institute to develop programs, workshops, conferences and events to implement this vision. The Green Technology Institute is the creation of Les Hamasaki and the board of directors of the foundation. The Institute will be partnering with various local, state and federal level initiatives to introduce strategies, opportunities and actionable plans. It will showcase viable solutions in cooperation with innovative environmental and green technology development companies.

An emphasis of special concern to both Bradley and Villaraigosa as minority mayors is to empower minority communities and youth in particular as active participants in the future. Projects now in development by the Institute are "Project Green Phoenix" and a "Green Technology Park". Project Green Phoenix is about bridging the "digital divide", with special attention to a) emergency preparedness based upon green technologies such as alternative solar energy technologies and b) to create a sustainable future through education and training in the most underserved communities of South Los Angeles. Project Green Phoenix is also about preparing our citizen and their youths to help prepare for natural disasters and imminent threats from terrorism, while creating jobs and business opportunities in the Green Economy. In the wake of Hurricane KatrinaÂ’s disaster and the need to be prepared for future disasters, the City of Los Angeles needs to prepare its citizens and youths with solutions that will reduce the risk of been caught off-guard. A Green Technology Park will also be established in South Central Los Angeles to attract, incubate and develop promising companies for Project Green Phoenix to provide avenues for young people for 21st century employment and business opportunities. The Green Technology Institute in association with Earthnetworks Television and its CEO Gurminder Singh will be spearheading the development of the above projects. Earthnetworks Television will be a sponsor for the above projects and will be donating online and on-air television capacity for the youths of the city of Los Angeles. The goal is to train teachers to prepare students to become part of the green industry sector as entrepreneurs, professionals and employees.

ZoomProspector Powers Business Location Decisions

ZoomProspector Powers Business Location Decisions

New website is first to offer businesses free access to comprehensive demographic, community, and real estate data while providing a new way for economic development organizations to market their communities.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) October 7, 2008

A new website was launched today that will help businesses and communities survive and thrive in the current economic environment. The official launch of ZoomProspector. com (http://www. zoomprospector. com) today is a revolutionary step in both economic development and business location decision making. ZoomProspector. com simplifies and improves the process of site selection analysis, so companies can quickly and effectively identify the right community for their business start-up, growth and expansion.

ZoomProspector. com (http://www. zoomprospector. com/index. aspx) allows businesses to avoid the many pitfalls of choosing the wrong location, which is even more critical in these unstable economic times. ZoomProspector does this by aggregating an unprecedented wealth of demographic, socioeconomic, and commercial real estate data in a single location, enabling companies to easily find the best community that matches their particular workforce needs, target customer base, and infrastructure requirements. In the past, this level of analysis would have entailed weeks of manual research, phone calls, and visits to multiple government offices. Additionally, as a free service, ZoomProspector removes the cost barriers that traditionally have prevented smaller companies from accessing this vital data.

"Approximately 750,000 businesses look for a new facility nationwide each year. With the unprecedented challenges facing businesses of all sizes today, including skyrocketing fuel costs, the credit crunch, rising unemployment and a global economy, businesses cannot afford to make anything less than the most informed business location decision. While the larger of these companies may have the resources and expertise to conduct an exhaustive demographic search and analysis, smaller and mid-sized companies typically have not had access to community data beyond property listings. They've essentially been making the most important decision for their company's long-term success wearing a blindfold," said Anatalio Ubalde, CEO at ZoomProspector. com.

"ZoomProspector changes this dynamic," continued Ubalde. "It integrates and presents data that was once hard to find and even harder to understand in a meaningful way, so large enterprises can perform faster searches, and small companies now have the tools needed to make informed, effective, and ultimately successful decisions for their expansion plans."

With ZoomProspector. com (http://www. zoomprospector. com/findproperties. aspx), any company considering a move or expansion can perform a nationwide search based on a wide range of criteria - from age demographics and education levels to costs, venture capital, highways, commute times, and proximity to airports. ZoomProspector objectively identifies the optimal communities based on consistent, third-party data and uses online mapping technology to search and display the locations that exactly match the company's needs. Additionally, ZoomProspector can overlay nearby businesses that are a potential source of competition or synergy. After identifying optimal communities, businesses can easily drill down to view specific properties within those areas. Commercial realtors can showcase their available properties to a highly targeted audience.

ZoomProspector. com (http://www. zoomprospector. com/ed/index. aspx) also delivers significant benefits to county and city-level economic development organizations. With its nationwide reach, the site enables local communities to effectively target and attract a broader audience to help them grow their local economy, weather a slowing economy, and better compete in a global market.

ZoomProspector. com leverages GIS Planning, Inc. (http://www. gisplanning. com).'s decade-long experience pioneering web-based geographic information system (GIS) applications for municipalities, regional government agencies, and community organizations focused on economic development. The company created the world's first web-based economic development GIS program, and today, GIS Planning's Software as a Service/Internet technology is actively employed by more economic development organizations than any other economic development service provider or consultant in the country.

About ZoomProspector. com
ZoomProspector. com (http://www. zoomprospector. com) speeds up and simplifies the process of site selection analysis so that companies can quickly identify the optimal location for their business start-up, expansion or relocation. Instead of spending days of research going to multiple government offices, real estate companies, and data sources you can get all of that information on ZoomProspector free of charge in minutes. Businesses define the community and property characteristics that are important to them. Then ZoomProspector uses its online mapping technology to search and display the locations that exactly match the company's needs. ZoomProspector objectively identifies the optimal communities for your business based on consistent, third-party data so you can truly compare apples-to-apples for all locations in the United States.

Hatches, Matches and Net Despatches

Hatches, Matches and Net Despatches

A website is offering distribution of personal announcements and notices, traditionally the domain of newspapers. Inspired by a 13 year old boy, it is seen as the first time the internet has been used for this type of promotion.

Wales, UK (PRWEB) March 19, 2006

A website claims to be the first family based notice site suggesting that births, marriages, deaths and almost any event can now be announced to a world wide audience.

As traditional boundaries are removed, TreeofNames. com is pioneering a new era in promoting announcements, offering the web as a fast, inexpensive and effective means of distribution. Already popular for seasonal events such as Christmas and Valentine’s Day the creator has taken it a step further. Nicky John (13), from South Wales, came up with the idea after reading the local newspaper. “To me, it’s just an obvious development and I’m surprised it has not been thought of before”.

The website already features various notices, accompanied by photographs and in some cases link to personal web sites. The tree concept evolved from a Christmas tree and is now a vibrant site covered in “blocks”, each containing individual messages. Commenting at the launch, Nicky explained, “newspapers will always be the first place for announcements but the internet can deliver the message to a wider and larger audience”. With Mother’s Day around the corner, this provides a unique and lasting dedication to Mum’s all around the globe.

To leave an entry costs £1 (less than 2 dollars), although for a short period single blocks are free. Although aimed at the public, business may also add messages at an additional cost. The project supports the Noah’s Ark Appeal as well as education facilities. Being home educated, Nicky built the site whilst studying web design, recently gaining a distinction as a web master. Delighted with the result Nicky hopes it will enable more people to examine the possibilities of a home education.

Many personalities have added their support to the venture. “It is great to see messages from all over the world, but I’m thrilled that many personalities have added theirs”, Nicky said. As for the future of his venture, he has a vision for an unlimited amount of pages which will create “a forest of trees”. He hopes that business will embrace the venture and create a rare platform where the public and commerce are on a level playing field.

The program, a joint collaboration between the Vinnova-Stanford Research Center of Innovation Journalism (INJO) at Stanford University and SAMAA TV beat out more than 500 other competitors from various industries in a nationwide consumer survey and an expert panel analysis.

The award is being given to SAMAA (www. samaa. tv) for launching Pakistan’s first dedicated program on innovation and for establishing the genre as an important journalistic beat in Pakistan. The program has also been applauded for playing a leading role in bringing local issues of innovative development to the forefront of public awareness in Pakistan.

Due to this collaboration, the content of our program has been acknowledged as being credible, containing relevant issues and making efforts in bringing together the relevant stakeholders of each industry to find innovative measures to cater the society needs”.
