Professional Boston Tutor Celebrates 2 Decades of Helping Students Excel

Professional Boston Tutor Celebrates 2 Decades of Helping Students Excel

Professional Boston tutor Dr. Charles Robinson has been teaching students of all kinds for two decades. His unique methods help students achieve a larger breadth and depth of knowledge.

(PRWEB) January 16, 2005

Professional Boston tutor Dr. Charles Robinson (http://www. tutoradvantage. com (http://www. tutoradvantage. com)) is celebrating a milestone in his career. For 20 years, Dr. Robinson has taught students with his unique one-on-one teaching approach. He has guided hundreds of students from the brink of academic disaster to the firm ground of competence, and from competence to mastery and excellence.

While some tutors specialize in one or two areas, Dr. RobinsonÂ’s decades of teaching experience and understanding of studentsÂ’ needs have benefited grade school, middle school, high school, and higher education students. He tutors math, physics, chemistry, business, engineering, computer languages and other important topics. Moreover, Dr. Robinson helps students prepare for standardized tests such as the SAT, GRE, and GMAT. His teaching has helped many students move from below-average scores to very high scores, and in some cases perfect scores. Some of his students define themselves as mediocre or worse before contacting him. These individuals eventually learn that they can overcome what they previously thought were their intellectual limits.

In celebration of the twentieth anniversary of his tutoring, Dr. Robinson recently launched an impressive revamped version of his website (http://www. tutoradvantage. com (http://www. tutoradvantage. com)). Aside from the details of the topics he teaches, it lists numerous outstanding testimonials from former students and parents.

One of his most interesting cases involved a Harvard physics graduate student. Dr. Robinson called her while she was on the other line making airline reservations for a one-way ticket home. The student felt that her academic skills were insufficient to successfully complete the semester and her degree. Robinson convinced her to stay and try his tutoring services. Thanks to his help, she graduated with a MasterÂ’s degree in her field of study.

Robinson obtained a doctorate from the Weizman Institute of Science and holds a B. Sc. degree from M. I.T. He has published research in scientific and engineering journals in physics, neuroscience, and computer science, among other areas.

Best Way to Add Swing to Party and Tone to Public Place

Best Way to Add Swing to Party and Tone to Public Place

WinJukebox is a party time solution to keep guests happy and let hosts relax. It plays music on demand, yet keeps an eye on what, when and how loud is played. Autoplay from multiple playlists and scheduled music downloads bring the right mood into any place, be it a pub, a cafe, or a lounge.

(PRWEB) December 26, 2005

WinJukebox is a party time solution to keep guests happy and let hosts relax. It plays music on demand, yet keeps an eye on what, when and how loud is played. Autoplay from multiple playlists and scheduled music downloads bring the right mood into any place, be it a pub, a cafe, or a lounge.

WinJukebox Software announces the release of WinJukebox v2.0, a piece of heavy artillery in the entertainment business. A hi-tech interpretation of the seasoned fun-giver, WinJukebox v2.0 provides rich options and settings to manage the mood of any public place or a private festivity. The core functionality of an on-demand music player was extended with playlist management and music updates. The program also features automatic volume balancing and a smart track overlap. WinJukebox v2.0 makes a perfect tool to let your party go while staying in control.

“The idea behind WinJukebox v2.0 is the combination of the freedom to choose a desired track and the ability to manage play lists and music menu,” says Oleg, CEO of WinJukebox Software. “Wherever people gather to have fun and let go a bit, they want to hear their favourite tunes. WinJukebox keeps this storming demand for music under control by introducing fair rules for everyone. If you want your tune played, punch its track number and wait your turn. The jukebox window also shows the tracks popularity chart. When the on-demand queue is empty, the auto playback mode switches to a list of new downloads or a top popularity list. We also added track repeat control, so that most ardent guests don’t inflict their tastes on others.”

The program has a different interface for playback management and on-demand play. The Jukebox window has an attractive texture skin. It shows the playlist queue and the popularity chart. Here is also the area where guests or customers can add their track to the queue. The Manager window, on the other hand, shows various available playlists. It allows controlling Jukebox playback and changing its settings.

The program’s settings help customise the interface and manage the music menu and playback. On entering a tune number, for example, the Jukebox window can show original massages in your native language. The settings allow automatic downloading of new tracks from bookmarked sites with optional traffic limits. As for playback, the program offers the repeat control, volume level normalisation, and custom track overlap. Pull it all together and you will have a rara avis to add zest to your party.

WinJukebox v2.0 Features at a Glance

Support for MP3, WMA, OGG and WAV formats;

Track repeat control;

Auto playback mode for continuous playback;

Optional track overlap and volume level normalisation;

Music menu editing and printout;

Scheduled network updates for music tracks with optional traffic limits;

Full-screen start for Jukebox window;

User-set and standard massages (Jukebox window);

User-defined queue length.

Effortless English Releases Business English Lessons With Entrepreneurial Focus

Effortless English Releases Business English Lessons With Entrepreneurial Focus

Effortless English announces the release of new business English lessons. The lessons offer a unique curriculum designed to teach both English and business skills.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) September 22, 2008

Effortless English, the online English education company, has released new business English lessons (http://effortlessenglishclub. com/business-english-success) titled "Success Business English". The company describes the lessons as business English lessons for freelancers and entrepreneurs. The lessons are designed to help immigrants and internationals learn business English.

A. J. Hoge, Director of Effortless English, said, "We wanted to reach a different kind of business English student. Traditionally, business English lessons focus on English for employees. However, we decided to tailor our new lessons to entrepreneurs and freelancers."

A unique feature of the lessons is their dual curriculum. The English lessons (http://www. EffortlessEnglishClub. com) are designed around a course in business development. Students learn marketing, positioning, product development, management, financing, and leadership while simultaneously learning business English.

Hoge, who designed the lessons, states, "Of course I wanted to teach English, but I also wanted to teach useful and practical business skills. I decided to teach the business strategies and tactics that I used to build my own successful company. The lessons are therefore designed as a crash course in business development and English."

In addition to their entrepreneurial focus, the lessons also use a unique language teaching technique called "Listen and Answer Stories". Listen & Answer stories are designed to teach grammar and vocabulary in an intuitive, natural way. The teacher asks a series of very easy questions about a central article, and the student answers as fast as possible.

Hoge states, "In fact, I make the questions super-easy for a reason. If the questions were difficult, students would start to think. They would try to translate. I don't want that. I want them to answer instantly and automatically - without any kind of translation. Another thing I do in the stories is repeat these easy questions in many different ways. I do this to get the vocabulary and grammar structures deep into the student's brain."

Success Business English Lessons sell for $37 and are available on the Effortless English website: http://effortlessenglishclub. com/business-english-success (http://effortlessenglishclub. com/business-english-success)

Apogee Provides Awards and Grants to Nine of Ukraine's Most Gifted Musicians in Collaboration with the Nation's Leading Music Schools

Apogee Provides Awards and Grants to Nine of Ukraine's Most Gifted Musicians in Collaboration with the Nation's Leading Music Schools

The Apogee Foundation jointly announced today with the Odessa Ministry of Culture and the administration of the Stolyarsky State Music School, the leading institution for the training of gifted young musicians in Ukraine, that it is providing awards and grants to nine of the nation's most outstanding music students and instructors, with further awards to follow at a festival to be jointly conducted later this year.

New York (PRWEB) June 13, 2006

The Apogee Foundation, a New York nonprofit dedicated to the development of human excellence in the performing arts, today announced that it is providing eight Excellence Awards to students and instructors of the historic Stolyarsky State Music School in Odessa, Ukraine's leading institution for the training of gifted young musicians, and that it also is providing its The Cherkassy Award for Excellence in the Performing Arts to the most promising musician at the Demutsky State Music School, the leading school for gifted musicians in central Ukraine.

Apogee's Excellence Awards are provided to individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary ability in achieving, or enabling others to achieve, the apogee of human excellence in the performing arts. Students receive awards in the form of Apogee Merit Scholarships, whereas instructors are eligible for the Foundation's Achievement Award. Detailed information describing all of Apogee's award programs in both English and Russian can be found on the Foundation's website at: http://www. ApogeeFoundation. org/awards/index. php (http://www. ApogeeFoundation. org/awards/index. php) and http://www. ApogeeFoundation. org/r_awards/r_index. php (http://www. ApogeeFoundation. org/r_awards/r_index. php)

The Stolyarsky State Music School was founded in 1933 and counts among its graduates some of the most revered performing artists in history, including David Oistrakh, Nathan Milstein and Emil Gilels. Laureates of the current awards were selected by a jury co-chaired by the Minister of Culture for Ukraine's Odessa Province, Yuri Kuznetsov, together with the Director of the Stolyarsky School, Eugene Lisuk, and Apogee President Kenneth Schneider. The newly announced 2005/2006 Apogee Merit Scholars selected by this jury are: Akim Anum-Dorhuso (piano), Vladislav Agramakov (piano), Yanina Sharopanovskaya (violin), Sergey Maiboroda (violin), Olga Zadorojnuk (piano), Alexander Lisuk (cello), and Sergey Nikituk (piano). Another set of awards is to be provided later this year at a festival to be jointly conducted by Apogee and the Ministry of Culture, where gifted musicians from throughout the entire Odessa Province as well as Apogee laureates from other nations will participate.

Apogee also announced that it has awarded the inaugural Stolyarsky Honorarium for Excellence in Education, a special edition of the Foundation's Achievement Award named in honor of the founder of the Stolyarsky School, Peter S. Stolyarsky, to the school's senior cello instructor, Pavel G. Kupin. Professor Kupin was himself a student of Mistislav Rostropovich and has taught at both the Stolyarsky School and the Odessa Conservatory for decades, passing on the great traditions both of his teacher and of these preeminent institutions to future generations. He also is the teacher of Alexander Lisuk, who was judged the top performer of this year's audition performances.

In addition to its Excellence Awards, the Foundation provides Regional Awards to world class performing artists from designated geopolitical regions in order to promote local development of performing arts training and to offer high potential candidates from these regions opportunities for international support and recognition. The Cherkassy Award for Excellence in the Performing Arts is made available each year to the most promising performing arts student in or from the Cherkassy Province of central Ukraine. This award is made in honor of the great violinist Mischa Elman, who was born in this province and who exemplifies the elite artistic talent which can emerge from remote areas to achieve the apogee of human excellence on the world stage.

Apogee is assisted in the administration of its Cherkassy Award by the Talnoye Benevolent and Cultural Society as well as by the administration of the Demutsky State Music School, which is the leading training institution for gifted musicians in central Ukraine. A jury including the Director of the Demutsky School, Pavel Melnik, Odessa Conservatory professor Igor Boruch, and Apogee President Kenneth Schneider selected Bogdan Dekhtyaruk, a 13 year old trumpet prodigy and grand prize winnder of multiple national and international competitions, to receive the inaugural Cherkassy Award and its accompanying scholarship.

Yuri Kuznetsov, Minister of Culture for the Odessa Province of Ukraine, said: "The Apogee Foundation is a welcome partner in fulfilling our aim of achieving excellence in the performing arts throughout our province, our nation, and the world. We look forward to building a brighter future together for talented artists and for everyone who benefits from empowering them to fulfill their potential."

Eugene Lisuk, Director of the Stolyarsky School, said: "We are delighted to partner with Apogee in recognizing and supporting Ukraine's most promising young artists, and look forward to all that we can achieve together for many years to come."

Pavel Melnik, Director of the Demutsky School, said: "We are grateful to Apogee for their efforts to build a future where talented people in our region and around the globe can be recognized for their gifts and can be assisted in fulfilling their dreams."

Apogee President Kenneth Schneider said: "Ukraine's traditions of producing world class performing artists are as great as those of any nation on Earth, and it is a great privilege to collaborate with these institutions which have played such an important role in such a magnificent history, and to insure that they will continue to thrive in the new millennium."

QEI-Durham Golf Tournament Provides Scholarships, Textbooks

QEI-Durham Golf Tournament Provides Scholarships, Textbooks

Quality Education Institute of Durham holds fifth annual golf tournament to expand opportunities for its students, including textbooks, scholarships, and media center.

Durham, NC (PRWEB) June 12, 2005

In a time when door-to-door school fundraising can be dangerous for children and catalog drives are becoming old hat, the parents, teachers, and friends of Quality Education Institute of Durham (QEI-Durham) are anticipating a great turnout for the schoolÂ’s annual golf-tournament fundraiser. On Friday, August 26, at 1 p. m., golfers from throughout the Southeast will tee off at the Occoneechee Golf Club in Hillsborough.

This annual golf tournament is the brainchild of avid golfers William A. Stephens and Michael D. Davis, co-chairs of the tournament’s planning committee. According to Davis, “This event is a great opportunity to raise money for the school and let golfers do what they love best, all at the same time.”

The tournament planning committee expects at least 80 golfers this year, a modest increase over last year’s 52 participants, which will also increase the amount of money raised for the QEI-Durham Education Fund, he said. Stephens indicated that the education fund “exists to expand the services offered to QEI’s students, including textbooks, supplies, transportation, after-school care, and field trips, in addition to funding a media center and scholarships based on financial need.”

Davis said the tournament has had outstanding support from Durham businesses and the surrounding area, including the tournament host Occoneechee Golf Club, RBC Centura, Mechanics and Farmers Bank, BlueCross/BlueShield of North Carolina, DickÂ’s Sporting Goods, and Pro Golf Discount.

The Occoneechee Golf Club is located at 1500 Lawrence Road, Hillsborough, NC. Would-be competitors may register for the tournament at www. qeidurham. org, where they can also find more information about the school.

Anger Coach Certifies Community Educators To Teach Emotional Skills to Youth

Anger Coach Certifies Community Educators To Teach Emotional Skills to Youth

The Anger Coach, a leader in anger management programs, announces a new one-of-a-kind certification program for community educators who work with children and adolescents at risk for current or future anger problems. According to Dr. Tony Fiore, clinical psychologist and owner of The Anger Coach company, anger control programs for youth are few and far between, yet should be an essential part of character and personal development of children, especially children at risk for later spousal abuse, community violence, workplace conflict or personal unhappiness due to poor emotional control.

Orange, California (PRWEB) December 26, 2008

The Anger Coach, a leader in anger management programs, announces a new certification program for community educators who work with children and adolescents at risk for current or future anger problems. According to Dr. Tony Fiore, clinical psychologist and owner of The Anger Coach, anger control programs for youth are few and far between, yet should be an essential part of character and personal development of children, especially children at risk for later spousal abuse, community violence, workplace conflict or personal unhappiness due to poor emotional control.

Tom Callos, martial arts leader, says: "Allow me to introduce you to a Master in a form of self-defense that, until now, has rarely (if ever) been taught on the mat or in the training hall. Dr Fiore's Certified Anger Management Educator online training program is one of a kind--anywhere in the world. It is a 20 hour certification program that gives you the knowledge and skills to teach anger management to your students or other members of the community."

Certification as an anger management educator allows community leaders to teach proven principals of anger control to community groups, professional groups, and school children. This might include public schools, private schools, martial arts programs, sports coaches, parenting classes, outreach programs, summer camp programs for children and adolescents, mental hygiene programs in schools, after school programs, gang prevention outreach programs, driver education programs, driver-court programs, training camps, workplace continuing education programs etc.

According to Fiore, just as you don't need to be a medical doctor to educate people on medical issues (such as smoking cessation, diabetes control or weight management), similarly you don't need to be a mental health professional to teach anger management skills. Similar to a marriage educator who teaches marriage or parenting skills, the anger educator teaches the skills needed to regulate emotions, to cope better with stress, and to resolve conflicts with others more effectively. Although many anger educators are also professionals, you don't need to be. The main requirement to be a anger educator is a strong interest in doing so and the ability to teach the core concepts effectively to others.

Dr Fiore, with colleague Dr. Ari Novick, has developed a unique model of anger management that has proven to be highly effective with adults and older teens. Called the "eight-tools model" of anger control, it has proven to be very easy to learn and to teach to others. This new certification program teaches educators how to apply the core material to youth as young as eight years old.

Poynter to Assist McCormick Foundation With Specialized Reporting Institutes

Poynter to Assist McCormick Foundation With Specialized Reporting Institutes

The Poynter Institute will partner with the McCormick Foundation to administer the 2011 McCormick Specialized Reporting Institutes.

St. Petersburg, Fla. (PRWEB) October 7, 2010

The McCormick Foundation has selected Poynter to administer its 2011 Specialized Reporting Institutes (SRI) program, the popular series of intensive journalism workshops designed to provide subject-specific expertise and practical skills to working journalists. McCormick looks to Poynter to share its 35 years of training experience to increase the impact, effectiveness and visibility of the events. The $340,000 grant will cover Poynter’s costs and fund six to eight SRIs next year, one of which will be hosted by Poynter.

“The Institute’s experience, reach and resources, including our e-learning site, News University, enable us to enrich these important on-the-ground events,” said Poynter President Karen B. Dunlap. “We look forward to working with McCormick and next year’s SRI program hosts to help journalists cover stories that serve democracy.”

Clark Bell, the foundation's journalism program director, said Poynter was the perfect choice to manage the SRI series.

“Poynter has conducted a number of our journalism trainings in the past, and we've always been highly satisfied with the results,” Bell said. “The organization's knowledge, customer service and digital capabilities will only enhance the impact of the SRI program.”

Under the new partnership, Poynter will work with McCormick to create an online application process for organizations applying to host SRIs. Poynter will work with selected SRI hosts to create a custom training resource page on the News University website and to help measure outcomes of the events.

Typically, SRI hosts receive grants of $35,000-$50,000. An SRI is organized and administered by a non-profit host, which convenes a diverse group of 15-20 journalists, often from small to mid-sized news organizations, for a program lasting two to three days. Participants represent all media platforms, and grant funds cover all or most of participants’ travel, lodging and tuition.

The goals of a Specialized Reporting Institute are to:
Identify key sources and resources on the topic Develop story ideas for today, tomorrow and six months from now Enable reporters to meet like-minded colleagues for tips and support, during the training and beyond Build confidence for those new to the topic and help those more familiar to see new possibilities Provide training and professional development to reporters working for smaller organizations, including community and ethnic media Share the learning, with new tools and technology and by urging newsroom participants to host training for colleagues when they return home

“I commend McCormick for the SRIs. They have long brought valuable information, insights, context and contacts to journalists,” Dunlap said. “In this digital era, when quality content must find its audience, Poynter is proud to be able to take the lessons of each SRI online, beyond the on-site walls, and reach thousands of journalists, academics, students and other content creators.”

About The Poynter Institute
Poynter trains journalism practitioners, media leaders, educators and other citizens in the areas of multimedia, leadership and management, reporting, writing and editing, ethics and diversity, journalism education and visual journalism. Poynter’s News University (http://www. newsu. org) offers interactive e-learning modules and links to other journalism education and training opportunities. Poynter’s Web site, (http://www. poynter. org) is the dominant provider of journalism news, with a focus on business analysis and the opportunities and implications of technology.

The Business of Style: Can Companies Achieve Better Results Through Employee Style Education?

The Business of Style: Can Companies Achieve Better Results Through Employee Style Education?

Does workplace style have a profound effect on the company's productivity and employee morale? Although Style Education is a new concept, it is one that is starting to gain a following. Stilista, a Boston-based company specializing in Corporate Style Education shares its experience.

Boston, MA (PRWEB) November 3, 2008

There are some professionals that have mastered the art of looking good for work: combining appropriate pieces with great tailoring, high quality, neat appearance, all while making the look their own through final touches and accessories. The bulk of the work force, however, looks at best ordinary and plain, and all too often, employees report to work looking downright sloppy.

Stilista, a Boston-based style consulting company that works with companies on improving employee style through education blames a number of factors:
 Companies are not clear enough in communicating their dress code policies  Casual culture in some companies translates to a sloppy attitude about dress  Business Casual and Casual dress codes are ambiguous and few employees know how to look well put-together while still being casual  Stores are mass producing low quality pieces in unflattering and unprofessional cuts (ie. pleated pants, khakis, polo shirts)

Companies often overlook the issue of dress, but research conducted by Stilista finds a powerful link between how a seller looks and the buyer's likelihood to buy from him. "Confidence is a huge part of it," says Alice Miles, managing partner of Stilista and corporate style trainer. "If a person feels great in their clothes, they exude a self-assurance that is hard to ignore. A well-dressed employee also portrays a positive brand image of their company".

The advantage of the new concept of style training is not only outward-facing. In fact, Stilista's corporate clients have also reported seeing improved morale, motivation and productivity among their employees that participated in a seminar or workshop.

"It's a simple formula that we see over and over again," says Maria Vasilevsky, Stilista's Corporate Education principal. "Great appearance leads to higher confidence, which leads to better business results."

The Radiography Program at Pima Medical Institute, 3333 E. Flamingo Road in Las Vegas recently received their accreditation for three years, the highest award offered to new programs. PMI’s RAD graduate can now sit for the American registry of radiologic technologists (ARRT) exam to get national certification.

Mesa, AZ (PRWEB) December 2, 2005

The Radiography Program at Pima Medical Institute, 3333 E. Flamingo Road in Las Vegas recently received their accreditation for three years, the highest award offered to new programs. PMI’s RAD graduate can now sit for the American registry of radiologic technologists (ARRT) exam to get national certification.

“Receiving accreditation for a new program is a rigorous scrutiny process and a lot of the credit goes to Marsha Sortor, our program director,” said Daryl Goldberg, campus director for the medical career college. “We are very proud of Marsha’s hard work and we look forward to graduating the top radiography students in the state.”

Radiography is one of the Top 20 career fields that will be most in demand through 2010 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Due to the expanding population of the elderly, as well as the increased use of innovative medical technology for intensive diagnosis and treatment, the demand for these jobs is expected to increase for 50 years.

The 96-week Radiography program includes 2800 hours of training. Graduates of this program are eligible to apply to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists examination for certification.

PMI is one of the premier medical career colleges in the western United States. The privately owned, accredited school provides students with a well-rounded education embracing theoretical classroom studies, as well as on-site training in allied health facilities within the community. Spark-Space: A Learning Revolution

Spark-Space: A Learning Revolution

Spark-Space is taking the well-established technology of idea mapping to new heights with its patented 3D intuitive interface. Spark-Space is a unique tool which encourages creativity in the classroom for all ability levels.

(PRWEB) May 11, 2005

Spark-Space is taking the well-established technology of idea mapping to new heights with its patented 3D intuitive interface. The independent results for learners:

Students were more attentive...they listened more carefully... understood quicker... because of 'Spark Learner' - Review from Schoolzone Department for Education UK

Encouraging and motivating students in the classroom can be a challenge when competing against video games, the Internet and other multimedia. Often, providing students with knowledge is not enough, they need to learn how to think outside the box, acquire new skills and find dynamic ways to process and apply information.

Interactive idea-mapping tools - graphic illustrators of the relationships between different pieces of information; are a creative form of keeping students of all abilities involved in the lesson, integrating technology into learning, encouraging student participation and retaining interest.

Spark-Space (www. spark-space. com) is a unique idea-mapping product which allows the user the create documents from ideas, quickly and simply. Teachers can present classes that have impact visually and aurally, appealing to spatial and linear learners across the range of abilities in the class - everyone learns.

Duncan Smith, Managing Director of Spark-Space believes that Spark Educator enables the teacher to involve all the class in the sharing and organising of ideas, words and images;

“Often in large classes of mixed ability it is difficult for the teacher to cater for the needs of each individual child, when the learners don’t understand or can’t contribute they tend to ‘switch off.’ Spark Educator allows the teacher to use key words or images as well as longer pieces of text to ensure that everyone can join in lessons, build on their knowledge and spark new ideas and creativity.”

With Spark Educator, teachers can encourage the development of ideas and maximise thinking. Its unique 3D capabilities enable students to understand the ‘big picture’ as well as the connecting idea framework, whilst the rotational screen allows the creation of animated tutorials to keep attention focussed.

The benefits of using Spark-Space are enormous, it is simple to use, comes with a fully working demonstration as well as 50 pre-prepared idea maps to get lessons started. Parents can even share in the learning experience and keep update with class activity, as lesson plans and maps can even be published on the web.

Spark-Space is rapidly becoming a fact of life, already incorporated into the education in many Academic institutions across the UK, United States. Spark-Space is a not only an exciting new product, it changes the learning landscape for students.

Phoenix Outdoor Wilderness Rehab for Teens Observes Link Between Recession-Related Stress and Adolescent Substance Abuse

Phoenix Outdoor Wilderness Rehab for Teens Observes Link Between Recession-Related Stress and Adolescent Substance Abuse

More teens are expressing concern over the economic crisis and turning to drugs and alcohol to escape the stress of everyday life, according to the addiction professionals at Phoenix Outdoor wilderness program.

Old Fort, NC (PRWEB) July 25, 2009

Adults aren't the only ones feeling the sting of the economic crisis. Teens are also affected by the stress of the recession - and when teens feel stressed, the whole family is likely to suffer.

Studies show that a stressed teen is more likely to experiment with drugs and alcohol, struggle in school, fall in with a negative peer group, and act out at home or in school. The addiction professionals at Phoenix Outdoor, a wilderness therapy program for teens, have observed this trend in their work with adolescents struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders.

In individual and group therapy sessions at Phoenix, more teens are expressing concerns about how the economy is impacting their families, says Shawn Farrell, the Executive Director at Phoenix Outdoor. "We used to hear a lot of teens talking about using drugs or alcohol to have fun or to fit in. Now, we hear many more teens describing substance abuse as a way to escape their problems or take a break from their worries," he explains.

Addiction is a family disease. Recent surveys by Junior Achievement show that adolescents absorb the worries of their parents, meaning the more worried a parent is about the economy, the more worried their children will be. And because children frequently follow their parents' model, as more parents turn to drugs or alcohol to cope with their own stresses, their children may be more likely to follow suit.

Although millions of teens are in need of substance abuse treatment, the recession has impacted parents' ability to invest in drug rehab, wilderness programs, or therapeutic boarding schools for their teens. As a result, the staff at Phoenix Outdoor sees more severe drug abuse and more dire situations that could've been avoided had the families been able to seek treatment earlier.

More stress also translates into higher rates of relapse. "When teens feel that life is out of control, they tend to fall back on old behaviors and coping strategies," says Eric Belsterling, an adolescent therapist at Phoenix Outdoor.

"Teens are already balancing school and relationship stress, media influences, and pressures to fit in and succeed," Belsterling notes. "When you add worries about getting jobs and affording college in a difficult economy, a number of teens begin self-medicating their stresses with drugs and alcohol."

The staff at Phoenix Outdoor has also observed a trend toward greater abuse of downers like Xanax, alcohol, and benzodiazepines - a trend that Belsterling believes is a strong indication that teens are trying to cope with a great deal of stress and anxiety.

In wilderness therapy, teens learn new coping skills, prepare a relapse prevention plan, and receive follow-up support to improve their ability to handle stress without turning to drugs or alcohol. With intensive therapy provided by master's level therapists and hands-on guidance from experienced field instructors, teens with substance abuse issues learn about the disease of addiction and gain the tools they need to start on their path to recovery.

Despite the country's economic woes, life continues to move at a faster pace with teens spending the greater portion of their days instant messaging, talking on cell phones, and updating Facebook and MySpace pages. "It's hard enough for adults to step back, turn off, and reconnect with themselves. Teens need time to decompress, too," states Eric Janoski, a head field instructor at Phoenix Outdoor.

At Phoenix Outdoor, teens get that opportunity. In a simple, peaceful environment with few distractions, teens are able to take a sober inventory of their lives and re-assess who they are and where they are going. They form strong bonds with peers and staff who are in recovery themselves and can offer the type of support and understanding teens in early recovery need. Working side by side with positive role models and peers, teens overcome challenges, build self-confidence, and discover the rewards of sobriety.

"Some teens feel so discouraged by the world around them. They have no idea how much beauty is out there," says Janoski. "Once they arrive in the forests of North Carolina, they see waterfalls, trees, and wilderness all around them, which opens them up to a new way of looking at the world. The woods speak for themselves in bringing about a shift in mentality that can't be replicated anywhere else."

Phoenix Outdoor is a therapeutic wilderness program for teens ages 13-17 who are struggling with substance use and/or abuse, as well co-occurring behavioral and mental health issues. Located in the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Phoenix Outdoor blends clinical assessments, wilderness therapy, the 12 Step model, and traditional therapeutic interventions to help teens realize the extent of their substance abuse problem and commit to the process of change. "Who Took My Chalk?" Pearson, The EdVenture Group Launch New Teacher Professional Development Program

Professional development designed to better incorporate 21st century skills into the classroom

Boston, MA (PRWEB) March 31, 2010

Pearson and The EdVenture Group today announced Who Took My Chalk?--a series of two-day professional development institutes designed to introduce administrators and teachers to what a true 21st century skills learning environment looks like, as well as provide strategies they can use to begin establishing the foundation and culture such an environment requires.

Who Took My Chalk? institute sessions focus a critical lens on how 21st century skills are used to create an engaging classroom through interactive discussions and hands-on activities that administrators and teachers can implement immediately in their schools. Participants also will discuss the common obstacles to creating a 21st century learning environment in their classrooms and gain a better understanding of the change process within school systems, including the relationship between positive attitudes, culture and change.

"We continue to invest in professional development programs that support teachers as they work to improve student achievement," said Susan Badger, CEO of Pearson's Teacher Education & Development Group. "Who Took My Chalk? is designed to give teachers a better understanding of the relationship between 21st century skills and student achievement, and includes a strong emphasis on an often-overlooked piece of the puzzle: helping teachers deal with change."

Who Took My Chalk? institutes will be held in Houston on June 14-15, 2010, with additional institutes scheduled for Chicago, Seattle, and Tucson. For schools and districts interested in bringing Who Took My Chalk? to a local audience, the institutes are also available for delivery on-site as a focused professional development event.

CEO of MZI Global Marketing, Mira Zivkovich, Heritage Marketing Leader, Among 100 Recipients of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor 2007

CEO of MZI Global Marketing, Mira Zivkovich, Heritage Marketing Leader, Among 100 Recipients of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor 2007

Mira Zivkovich, a leader in heritage and multicultural marketing, President and CEO of MZI Global Marketing and founder of the Slavic Heritage Coalition, is a recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor 2007 presented on May 12, 2007 on Ellis Island. One of 100 recipients from the entire U. S. , Mira Zivkovich was chosen by the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations to receive this honor because of her contributions to various charitable causes and her devotion to her Serbian ancestral group and dedication to preserving the multicultural diversity of American society.

New York, NY (PRWEB) May 18, 2007

Mira Zivkovich (https://console. prweb. com/prweb/preview/only/50823/prweb530239.php? SESSION_ID=50823_do46619f44555e0), a leader in heritage and multicultural marketing, has used her abilities and resources as President and CEO of MZI Global Marketing to promote social responsibility and awareness for various organizations and multicultural communities. She was awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor by the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations (NECO) on Saturday, May 12, 2007.

Each year, NECO serves as umbrella representing over 300 ethnic groups in the U. S. and awards annually the Ellis Island Medal of Honor to 100 outstanding individuals who portray a lifestyle dedicated to the community, exhibit interests for the preservation of cultural groups and who share and contribute through personal and professional achievements toward the overall benefit of society.
Both the United States Senate and House of Representatives have officially passed resolutions recognizing the Ellis Island Medals of Honor, which ranks among this country's most prestigious awards. Each year, Ellis Island Medal of Honor recipients are listed in the Congressional Record, honoring those who have made enduring contributions to our nation and to the world.

The Ellis Island Medal of Honor 2-day event begins with a reception the evening before the official presentation ceremony at the prestigious Metropolitan Club in NYC where the medalists meet each other. The following afternoon, recipients and guests are taken by ferry boat to Ellis Island for the ceremonial event lasting 7 hours. The colossal production worthy of Hollywood, starts with a ceremony in a 16,000 square foot tent, over 250 entertainers, marching bands, performers in full regalia, to honor the medalists. There are lights, camera and plenty of action but nothing matches the patriotic and emotional event which medalist Mira Zivkovich describes as the most memorable moment in her life. Following the tent ceremony, the medalists and over a thousand guests proceed to the Great Hall ballroom where candlelight, elegantly appointed tables, music and dance greet the medalists and their families for the evening's dinner celebration. To top everything, this spectacular ceremony and premier event of the year in New York City, ends with Grucci spectacular fireworks display in backdrop of New York Harbor.

Ms. Zivkovich is also the founder of the Slavic Heritage Coalition, which promotes the contributions of Slavic-Americans to American society, Her knowledge of heritage has helped her to make connections in the business of global marketing and develop marketing based on culture. Studies shows that 40 % of Americans can trace their roots to ancestors who entered United States through Ellis Island and are aware of their heritage roots. This has lead her to develop a proprietary methodology - Ethnosynergism™, which provides insights into the attitudes and behaviors of numerous market segments and connects companies and brands with diverse consumer groups. Ms. Zivkovich stated: "For me, the loss of one's heritage means a loss of identity and who we are as Americans, collectively. I strongly believe that the individual we have become today is a direct result of our history and places from which our elders came. Our past is something to build upon, something to fall back on, something that gives us courage to go forward, and something that makes us solid and stable as rock."

Tremendous appreciation goes to her beloved son, Brian Zivkovich Choudhary, and friends who also understand her commitments to her objectives and declining so many social engagements. Additional recipients of the 2007 Ellis Island Medals of Honor include: Her Excellency Sheikha Haya Rashed Al Khalifa, President of the 61st Session of the United Nations General Assembly; Senator Chuck Hagel; Rev. John I. Jenkins, C. S.C., President of the University of Notre Dame; U. S. Congressman Tom Lantos, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Zivkovich has successfully transferred her leadership experience at her firm to assist critical social issues. "Our pro bono work allows us to help others and reaffirms our core company values. We believe good business should be meaningful, which is why MZI is committed to improving communities throughout the world," says Mira Zivkovich. She incorporates this philosophy in everything she does by speaking for the voices that cannot be heard and by donating her time and energy to various compelling causes over the years.

Because of her many achievements and her ability to touch communities through her personal and professional achievements, Zivkovich was honored at this year's ceremony on Saturday, May 12, 2007 in New York City. Zivkovich will join the honored ranks of past recipients include six U. S.
