Lorenti Strives to Bring Interpreters Together on First Cruise to Alaska

Lorenti Strives to Bring Interpreters Together on First Cruise to Alaska

First ever interpreters-only cruise to ALaska in 2006

Faribault, MN (PRWEB) September 8, 2005

Attending an interpreting workshop, and then dashing off to climb a few glaciers, going for a dip in the Jacuzzi, perhaps even with a margarita in hand all within one location… Seems a bit off the wall? Not really, says Emilia Lorenti, a New York City interpreter. “It’s really difficult for interpreters to take time off to go on a vacation because they depend on their interpreting incomes, and because they usually have used up all of their vacation time for interpreting-related conferences and workshop. So this cruise is a perfect solution.”

Lorenti is the brainchild behind CruisEUs, a cruise that will provide a workshop series onboard along with social and entertainment opportunities on a cruise to Alaska on June 30-July 7, 2006.

“While at a conference, I was thinking that after the second day I had already seen everything. And since I do send a lot of interpreters to interpret on cruises, I thought – hey, why not put the two together? Interpreters could visit a different location each day and earn continuing education units (CEUs) while being with their families and friends at the same time,” Lorenti says.

And out of this idea came CruisEUs. Lorenti has been interpreting for 19 years, and has attended plenty of conferences to know what works and what doesnÂ’t. So sheÂ’s brought in dynamic workshop presenters.

Presenters include Peter Cook, Byron Bridges, Crom Saunders, and Lynne Wiesman. “We decided to bring in a mixture of deaf and hearing presenters because we know many interpreters have significant others who are also deaf, and then we of course wanted to present a bilingual approach to our workshops,” Lorenti explains. “But for those who want to attend the cruise but not participate in the workshop package, they can do this as well by earning independent study credits.”

Younger cruise-goers haven’t been forgotten, either.. “The cruise offers activities at no additional cost for children, including an ocean program for kids aged 3-17,” Lorenti says. “So this is really an opportunity for all to go, exchange ideas and experiences as working interpreters, and then go on land trips with families and friends.”

200 cabins aboard the Royal CaribbeanÂ’s VISION OF THE SEAS have been booked, and full accommodations will be provided for those who need assistive devices. More information is available at www. cruiseus. net.

“I think it’s going to be a wonderful combination of work, learning, and play for our interpreters,” Lorenti said. “I’m really hoping that this will be a major success, and that it’s the first of many cruises to come for our profession. Besides, being in workshops among the mountains and glaciers of Alaska – what more could you ask for?”

Study Shows Singles are Thriving in New Haven - Destination Named One of the Best Places to Live for Singles

According to a recent study conducted by Money magazine* on the 'Best Places to Live,' single residents in New Haven are on the rise. Centrally located in the Northeast corridor between New York and Boston, singles are taking note of New Haven's urban revival. Within the last ten years, the destination has witnessed a sharp increase in single residents, with many living and working in the downtown area.

New Haven, Conn. (PRWEB) August 15, 2008

According to a recent study conducted by Money magazine* on the 'Best Places to Live,' single residents in New Haven (http://www. infonewhaven. com) are on the rise. Centrally located in the Northeast corridor between New York and Boston, singles are taking note of New Haven's urban revival. Within the last ten years, the destination has witnessed a sharp increase in single residents, with many living and working in the downtown area. Today, more than 40 percent of New Haven's total population is comprised of young singles. Exciting downtown developments, access to higher education, proximity to major corporations as well as a vibrant arts and culture scene were among the top reasons named for the shift, deeming New Haven one of the best places for singles to live in the United States.

"Downtown New Haven offers singles a vibrant community that includes big city amenities from award-winning restaurants to world-class culture, while still retaining its New England charm," Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. said. "The lure of singles to New Haven speaks to the city's renaissance and commitment to making the city a great place to live, work and play."

More than 130 businesses have recently opened in and around downtown New Haven, including restaurants, retail stores, museums and cultural and entertainment attractions. While more than 3,720 housing units are currently available, a wave of single residents has created demand for additional housing. More than 1,000 new housing units are on the horizon, including 360 State Street -- proposed to be a LEED Silver project -- that will house 450 luxury and 50 affordable housing units and an urban grocery store such as Trader Joe's.

Another top selling point for singles is the number of area employers who offer homebuyer programs, where first-time buyers can receive up to $30,000 toward the purchase of a home. According to Zillow. com, a leading online real estate service, New Haven property value still shows a stronger appreciation rate (188 percent over the past ten years) when compared to the rest of the country and in terms of depreciation, has been less impacted by the recent recessive trend in the housing market.

There are more than 15 colleges, universities and professional schools located within a 30-mile radius of downtown New Haven, in addition to 11 junior colleges and technical institutes. Yale University, Southern Connecticut State University, Gateway Community College and Albertus Magnus College are among the top schools that add to the city's vibrant academic environment. Beyond education, New Haven's academic institutions have also played a crucial role in downtown development, from the creation of new jobs and community services to placing the city as well as its workforce on the international map.

Several leading state and global companies are based in New Haven, including Yale University, Yale-New Haven Hospital, Hospital of St. Raphael, AT&T and the world headquarters of the Knights of Columbus. These companies have not only generated openings within the life sciences, medical services and biotechnology industries, but they have also spurred emerging sectors such as technology-intensive businesses and firms that support biotech operations. New Haven is also home to a considerable number of world-renowned architecture firms, like Pelli Clarke Pelli and Newman Architects, as well as nationally recognized law firms, such as Wiggin & Dana and Withers Bergman. These firms attract young, new talent to the city every year. Additionally, more than 20 Fortune 500 companies are located within less than an hour's drive from New Haven. Future employment opportunities include a $500 million Yale-New Haven Cancer Center, the newest of 41 research centers in the county.

For single residents, the city's most commendable attribute is it burgeoning arts, culture and culinary scene. The city is home to a number of world-renowned museums such as The Peabody Museum of Natural History, The Yale University Art Gallery, Yale Center for British Art and City-Wide Open Studios (CWOS), a resource that unites hundreds of local artists and allows visitors to discover new artists, purchase art and explore gallery shows of the city. For a more intimate experience, the city is also brimming with art galleries featuring seasonal events and apprenticeship programs. New Haven's thriving theater scene includes one of the most historic Broadway theaters in the United States, The Shubert Theater and the tony-award wining Long Wharf Theater that soon will be relocating into downtown. New Haven singles can also enjoy an unparalleled collection of world cuisine on nearly every downtown block.

"As a single person I certainly looked into the social scene and overall quality of life before deciding where I wanted to live," said Chris Laconte, director of business development at Higher One. "In New Haven, I'm at a prestigious company in a city where I'm constantly meeting new people and where the social scene is welcoming and diverse. With so many bars, restaurants, cultural activities and so many young professionals involved in everything, there's no such thing as a boring moment in New Haven. I'm glad I chose to live and work here."

1st Annual American High School Internet Mathematics Competition Begins Monday, September 13

1st Annual American High School Internet Mathematics Competition Begins Monday, September 13

The inaugural American High School Internet Mathematics Competition, the first competitive high school academic event to rely on the use of the internet, will take place the week of September 13-17, 2004. The event is free to all participating students and schools and features thousands of the nationÂ’s top high school math students.

Nashville, TN (PRWEB) August 10, 2004

The inaugural American High School Internet Mathematics Competition (“AHSIMC”), the first competitive high school academic event to rely on the use of the internet, will take place the week of September 13-17, 2004.

The event, free to all participating students and schools, will feature thousands of the nationÂ’s top high school math students.

The AHSIMC was founded by Bradley Metrock, a current Vanderbilt University business school student who participated in competitive mathematic events while in high school.

“The American High School Internet Mathematics Competition is an example of how technology will help level the playing field between the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’ of our educational system,” Metrock said. “Because the AHSIMC is completely free to students, teachers, and their schools, all of our nation’s children can access the elite world of competitive mathematics through the internet.”

The start-up competition has been embraced by both students and educators alike, including Cindy O’Brien, a math teacher at Haltom High School in Fort Worth, Texas. “For us, the AHSIMC represents a chance to benchmark our high school against the rest of the United States, while giving us a powerful tool to strengthen our mathematics curriculum,” O’Brien remarked.

Teams of up to five students will receive the test, via email, at noon (CST) on Monday, September 13. Teams, after working both at school and at home on the contest throughout the week, must email back their completed exams by noon (CST) on Friday, September 17 to be graded.

Ben Cortopassi, AHSIMC Vice-President and Director of Testing, believes the competition will appeal to established math team programs, as well as newcomers to the competitive math world. Cortopassi explains, "The AHSIMC provides an introduction to competitive mathematics, while simultaneously challenging the brightest math students in the United States."

A follow-up national press release will announce the winners of the 2004 AHSIMC Exam on Monday, November 1, at 8 AM (CST). The winning teamÂ’s members will each receive a video game system, while both the winning teamÂ’s members and runner-up teamÂ’s members will receive commemorative plaques. Certificates are given to the remainder of the top 5% of participating teams, and additional awards will be presented to the winning teamÂ’s faculty sponsor and school.

[For additional information or interview requests, contact Bradley Metrock by phone at (205) 531 3247 from 9 AM to 7 PM Central Standard Time, or email him directly at Bradley@AHSIMC. com. The AHSIMC will make every effort to accommodate members of the media seeking information regarding a story or feature about the upcoming 2004 Exam.]

Endicott College Joins SAGE's Tuition Rewards Program

Endicott College Joins SAGE's Tuition Rewards Program

Endicott College, in Massachusetts, has joined the SAGE Scholars Tuition Rewards Program, the nation's first college savings program devoted exclusively to private colleges and universities.

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) August 24, 2005

SAGE Scholars has added another school to its consortium of private colleges and universities that reward families for saving for college. Endicott College, which was recently ranked in the top tier of “Best Comprehensive Colleges-Bachelors” by US News & World Reports, is the 174th school nationally to join SAGE’s Tuition Rewards Program.

SAGE is exceptionally pleased to have Endicott participate in its conglomerate. Dr James Johnston, SAGE’s Founder and President, stated “SAGE is focusing a lot of our attention on the recruitment of schools. Specifically, we’re trying to attract a greater number of New England private schools to our program and Endicott’s participation will help increase the recognition of the quality of schools in SAGE.” SAGE appears to be gaining presence in Massachusetts; Endicott is joining Clark University, a major research institute and a long standing member of the Tuition Rewards program, as well as Becker College and Gordon College in SAGE.

The Tuition Rewards Program has grown by leaps and bounds since 2002 when college savings entered the American mainstream. “We’ve seen our number of participating students nearly triple” Dr. Johnston stated. “We currently have over 77,000 students in the Tuition Rewards Program. Ultimately, we want to encourage enough families to save and plan for higher education costs that our member schools will have access to a database of students that will number in the hundreds-of-thousands, if not millions.”

More about Tuition Rewards: SAGE’s Tuition Rewards Program uniquely brings together families, investment companies and private colleges and universities to encourage college savings. Families earn Tuition Rewards by investing with SAGE’s Financial Partners and use Tuition Reward by sending their children to participating schools. SAGE’s Financial Partners are responsible for helping families earn Tuition Rewards by offering the Program on specific investment vehicles and accounts. Member Colleges and Universities realize that to remain affordable, they have to encourage families to “do the right thing,” which is to save for college; offering Tuition Rewards is how SAGE’s colleges do this.

SAGEÂ’s consortium of Financial Partners and schools has grown in recent years to include nationally recognized institutions, including DePaul University, Allianz, Beloit College, Monetta Funds, Drexel University, Horace Mann Insurance, Creighton University, Ziegler Brokers, St. Lawrence University and Asset Marketing Systems.

Dr. Johnston finished by saying “SAGE's goal is to grow our program.” With the addition of Endicott College, Dr. Johnston and SAGE are well on their way.

Alternative University Breaks Down Educational Barriers for Hispanic Community

Alternative University Breaks Down Educational Barriers for Hispanic Community

National American University (NAU), a fully accredited, four-year university with bachelor's, associate and master's level degrees, is working to reduce the barriers between higher education and the Hispanic community in Austin. By offering flexible, new programs like Applied Management, traditional obstacles are being replaced with a fresh, alternative approach towards getting a college degree.

Austin, TX (PRWEB) February 26, 2008

National American University (NAU), a fully accredited, four-year university with bachelor's, associate and master's level degrees, is working to reduce the barriers between higher education and the Hispanic community in Austin. By offering flexible, new programs like Applied Management, traditional obstacles are being replaced with a fresh, alternative approach towards getting a college degree.

Statistics show that only 13 percent of Hispanic Texans have an associates degree or higher. Common barriers to getting a college degree include the need to maintain employment for income, family responsibilities and scheduling conflicts. Additionally, as a majority-minority state, low enrollment in higher education among Hispanic Texans will impact all Texans. Lower education can result in reduced income, fewer job opportunities and lower quality care for families.

NAU is seeking to remove the barriers to higher education through flexibility and personal attention. "Austinites are fortunate, because they are surrounded by quality educational institutions. That said, NAU has the history and experience as a higher education institution to know that some populations are still not being served by traditional college options. By opening our new campus and offering the type of flexible programs we do, we're going to give more people the ability to earn their college degree and create a better life for their family," stated J. P. Foley, Regional Vice President of National American University.

According to the Pew Hispanic Center based in Washington, D. C., many Latinos attempt to get their college degree but drop out before finishing. Encouragement is especially essential in keeping students enrolled who have a lot of outside responsibilities. At NAU, student support begins at registration. Each student has a personal Career Coach to help with the enrollment process, filling out required forms and to assist in transferring credits. This level of personal attention alleviates anxiety and moves students through the enrollment process easily so they can focus on their courses.

"I've wanted to get my college degree for a long time, but I had several concerns. I couldn't afford to stop working, and my schedule was already hectic. I chose NAU, because the staff is very accessible, and I can keep earning an income. It feels so good to finally be doing this," stated Michael Leising.

National American University is changing the educational landscape with its fresh perspective. Austin students are able to take their courses in the classroom or online, reducing schedule conflicts. The flexibility of the degree programs also makes it easier to plan schoolwork around students' lives, rather than the other way around. Further, NAU students are able to continue their careers while simultaneously attending college.

Utilizing the Applied Management program, students are even turning their workplace experience into educational credit. Today, with military and civil service servants investing extensive hours in career training, the Applied Management program can reduce the time and financial commitments involved in obtaining a college degree by converting the experience into college hours.

National American University recently launched their first classes in Austin. NAU is already attracting the attention of many Austinites, including Hispanic working professionals and stay-at-home parents who have long seen the value in having their college degree but felt overwhelmed by the traditional commitment and requirements of going back to school.

With 66 years of academic expertise, National American University holds equivalent accreditation standards as state universities like The University of Texas at Austin or Texas A&M, which are members of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. With its first campus and central administrative offices located in South Dakota, NAU is also regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

About National American University (NAU):
National American University (NAU) is a fully accredited, four-year university granting degrees on the bachelor's, associate and master's level. NAU's mission is to assist non-traditional students in earning their degrees within the accountability of a private, for - profit educational setting.

For specifics on the Austin campus and registration, call Steve Anthens (512) 745-7022 or visit www. nauaustin. com.

The leading expert in the world on Cutis Marmorata Telangiectatica Congenita (CMTC) is coming from the Netherlands. Also attending are the leading radiologist Dr. Wayne Yakes, Dr. J. Stuart Nelson of the Beckman Laser Institute in California with new laser information, the pioneer of surgical options for vascular birthmarks Dr. Milton Waner on new surgery techniques, Dr. Martin Mihm on new research, Dr. Anne Comi of the Hunter Nelson Sturge-Weber Center at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, and many other world renowned physicians in the field of vascular birthmarks.

Also available are patient/parent clinic appointments with the attending physicians split into teams according to the birthmark type and related syndromes. Patients will have their undivided attention for a brief, yet valuable examination.

Other sessions and meetings will also be available, including Special Guests Donna and Evan Ducker – mother and son authors of Buddy Booby's Birthmark Book available for signings; as well as 12 year-old Glen from Glen's Gang newsletter and pen pal group; photographer Nathan Caulford specializing in entertainment and fine art portraiture; make-up sessions; and a free mini-production special presentation of Wanda's World (a “tween” musical about a middle school girl with a large birthmark on her face who is terrified of her first day of school in a new town).

Registration for this once in a lifetime conference is still being accepted.

2 New Free Reports Help Burn Belly Fat Without Wasting Money On Ab Machines

2 New Free Reports Help Burn Belly Fat Without Wasting Money On Ab Machines

John Davenport, the creator of the Burn My Belly Fat website, is now offering 2 Free diet and fitness reports to help men and women lose stomach fat and get flat abs. In addition, the website includes updated information on ab machines and exposes which infomercials are true and which paint an unrealistic picture.

Garfield, NJ (PRWEB) July 6, 2009

Noted health and fitness author, John Davenport, creator of the Emotional Eating Solution program (http://emotionaleatingsolution. com), has announced the release of 2 Free diet and fitness reports which can be found on this page: How to Burn Belly Fat Fast (http://burnmybellyfat. com).
The 2 guides are meant to help men and women create a healthy lifestyle and get flat abs in the process.

This is part of the expansion of his http://BurnMyBellyFat. com (http://BurnMyBellyFat. com) website which provides extensive nutrition and exercise information for people who wish to lose stomach fat and get flat abs.

It contains answers to the most pressing questions people have about how to really shed fat from their midsection, what to eat and when, how to workout, and which products work and which are a waste of money.

"There is so much misinformation floating around about how to really get sexy abs that I knew I had to do something to get the right information in front of people, " Says John Davenport, weight loss researcher and author. "Much of this misinformation is simply outdated, but some of it is actually distributed by unscrupulous marketers or by people posing as experts.

"For instance, one of the common questions I get is how you can get a flat stomach in 2 weeks (http://burnmybellyfat. com/how-to-get-a-flat-stomach-in-2-weeks. html). This is impossible of course, especially if you have a lot of excess weight to lose, yet many products do make such claims."

"The trouble people have in finding quality information is causing a lot of people to make bad choices which may cost them a lot of money and contribute nothing whatsoever to the results they see at the end of the day. People spend so much time and effort to flatten their stomach but never see results. There's no shortage of willpower. It is lack of the proper knowledge which stops people from seeing results.

"The 2 Free guides are just the beginning of an education process which each and every one of us must go through in order to take control of his or her habits, learn how to work with our body and not against it, and create the right lifestyle for long term health and fitness results."

The Burn My Belly Fat website contains information on a variety of topics and is being updated regularly. Among the many articles there is a section on which Cardio workouts burn belly fat (http://burnmybellyfat. com/cardio-workouts-for-abs. html) the best and what is the most effective way to do them. It is also possible to learn correct nutrition guidelines and motivational tips.

But what is even more interesting is that John Davenport decided to make a specific section about ab machines.

"I see many infomercials for ab machines, " said John Davenport. "It seems that you can't turn on the TV without seeing one or another. Some of these machines do have merit, but often the infomercials tend to stretch the truth, emphasizing good points and not mentioning bad ones. This is advertisement and I have no problem with that, but I want people to get the complete picture before spending $200 or more of their hard earned money.

"The key is to provide a detailed review of the good and bad things about the most popular abs machines and to offer alternatives which may be more effective and affordable."

2 examples of heavily advertised machines which are discussed in detail can be found on these pages: Ab Circle Pro Review (http://burnmybellyfat. com/ab-circle-pro-review. html) and Ab Coaster Review (http://burnmybellyfat. com/ab-coster-review. html).

"Losing all your excess belly fat isn't an easy process and will take time. However, you can get excellent results with the right attitude, the right mindset, and the right information. This is what I am trying to teach people."

About John Davenport:

John Davenport was overweight from an early age and struggled with emotional eating and weight for the better part of his life. Then, a few years ago, he decided to transform his life, and began actively researching exercise, nutrition, and the emotional sides of fat loss and fitness.
Through trial and error and sheer determination, he achieved the results he had always dreamed about.

"No one can burn the fat for you," says John Davenport, author and researcher, "but I can certainly give you the necessary push to make the first step in this process."

After losing over 30 pounds of fat, John Davenport decided to take it one step further and took up long distance running. He now enjoys running so much that he frequently does half marathons, while he had trouble completing a 2 mile jog just a few short years ago.

John Davenport states that his mission in life is to help more people lose weight, become fit, and enjoy a healthier lifestyle. He has written several hundred articles on health and fitness issues which appear on numerous websites.

"Diets often fail because most weight gain comes from an unhealthy emotional dependence on food," Says John Davenport, who recently wrote a special program on how to stop emotional eating and Overcome binge eating (http://emotionaleatingsolution. com). This program not only shares his story but includes a variety of methods in which you can develop a much healthier relationship with food.

"95% of diets fail. Even if people do lose weight, they gain it all back again," John Davenport claims. He continues to provide information for people from many countries around the world. His latest ebook, Maintain Don't Gain teaches people how to maintain their weight (http://maintaindontgain. com) for many years.

Health/Parenting News: New Survey Shows Exposure to Kids Puts Parents at Greater Risk for Illness

Health/Parenting News: New Survey Shows Exposure to Kids Puts Parents at Greater Risk for Illness

Integrative Health Expert Dr. Claire Wheeler says Prevention is important to reduce that risk

Nottingham, UK (PRWEB) November 13, 2008

A new survey of U. S. adults, 18+, for Sambucol black elderberry immune-boosting supplement (http://www. sambucolusa. com/product. html) finds that parents are significantly more at risk for colds and flu when they have children in the household (71% vs. 53% for those with no children at home), yet this same population of parents are the ones least likely to focus on prevention, such as getting the flu shot (68% of those with a child/children in their household say they do not get flu shots).

Additionally, according to the survey, conducted by Harris Interactive for Sambucol (http://www. sambucolusa. com), approximately one in four adults,18-44, report that if someone in their family gets sick, they will usually get sick, too, with women reporting this at a more significant rate than men. One factor could be that around 30% of those age 18-44 report feeling "run down," compared to just 14% for those 55+ (those least likely to have young children at home).

"It is important that adults, especially those with children living at home, take extra precautions to prevent colds and flu, because children are great spreaders of germs," says Claire Wheeler, M. D., instructor at Portland State University's School of Public Health and former fellow at the prestigious Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine program at the University of Arizona. "And, when kids are sick, many moms have the natural inclination to hover over their children, offering lots of hugs and kisses to make them feel better, which further serves to provide the contact that passes these viruses."

Dr. Wheeler's advice on how to keep your family healthy this cold/flu season:

•Get plenty of zzzz's. Make sure you get at least seven hours of sleep every night - sleep deprivation is a very powerful immune suppressant; children should get nine to 11 hours nightly.
•Stop, breathe and relax. Stress is known to be bad for immune function. Learn, practice and master at least one good stress management technique, such as breathing, meditation, daily yoga or stretching; even a daily walk or jotting your thoughts down in a journal can help your mind re-focus and relax. Since parents tend to be stressed out, this can play a huge factor in their immune function.
•Get moving. Exercise is a powerful immune booster, and even a little is better than nothing. This includes both cardio and weight training or a simple 20 minute walk to get the heart rate going.
•Drink up. Toxins build up and strain immunity when you don't get enough water in your diet. Coffee, alcohol and beverages with sugar, such as juices, actually dehydrate the body, increasing the need for water. For every non-water beverage you drink, follow up with a glass of water.
•Have fun! Laughter has been shown in laboratory studies to have a positive impact on immune function. Consider adding a humor break to your day - tell a funny story to your kids - whatever breaks the tension and makes you laugh will help.
•Snuggle up. Though it is hard to find "private time" with your partner when you have little kids running around the house, some studies show that having sex a few times a week is associated with longevity, especially for men. This seems to work in part through positive changes in immune function, and it can go a long way in helping to reduce some stress.
•Supplement your diet. The majority of people do not get enough nutrients from a regular diet to support strong immune function, including the amount of antioxidants needed. Sambucol® (http://www. sambucolusa. com) is a drug-free, high-antioxidant, black elderberry extract that has been clinically tested in published studies and used for years to help support the immune system. Sambucol® Kids is for children two years and older, that has a delicious berry flavor kids will love.
•Let there be light. If the darker days of fall and winter make you feel sad, irritable or depressed, your immune function could be at risk. Consider getting a full-spectrum light for your desk or speak to your healthcare professional about taking a serotonin-enhancing supplement to keep your brain chemistry on the positive side during the darker days of winter.

For more information about immune boosting, visit www. sambucolusa. com.

Note to Media: For more information or to set up an interview with Dr. Wheeler, contact Rachahd Tosado at Robin Leedy & Associates, (914) 241-008, ext. 15, or. Copies of the clinical studies, press materials and review products are available. Survey Methodology
Harris Interactive® fielded the study on behalf of Sambucol® black elderberry supplement from October 8-10, 2008 via its QuickQuerySM online omnibus service, interviewing a nationwide sample of 2,212 U. S. adults aged 18 years and older. Data were weighted using propensity score weighting to be representative of the total U. S. adult population on the basis of region, age within gender, education, household income, race/ethnicity, and propensity to be online. No estimates of theoretical sampling error can be calculated; a full methodology is available.

The Jenzabar Foundation Announces 2009 Student Leadership Award Winners

The Jenzabar Foundation Announces 2009 Student Leadership Award Winners

Foundation to Grant A Total of $50,000 for Ten Student-Led Programs

Boston, MA (Vocus) May 29, 2009

The Jenzabar Foundation (http://www. jenzabar. net/about_jbar/Foundation. html) today announced the winners of its 2009 Student Leadership Awards, recognizing ten student-led campus groups and projects that have made a significant contribution to better the world outside of their institutions of higher education. The winners of the second annual Student Leadership Awards have demonstrated a commitment to making a difference through community service, and their campus groups will receive a $5,000 grant to continue their work.

Nearly 150 Student Leadership Award submissions were received from students, non-profit organizations, and institutions across the globe, representing ongoing activities or projects completed during the 2008-2009 academic year. The nominations were evaluated according to the community service or humanitarian endeavors' beneficiary impact, campus influence, model, outcome, and presentation. The 2009 award winners are as follows:
Claremont McKenna College, Claremont, California - SOURCE: SOURCE is a student-run organization that consults with local nonprofits in order to improve their operations and effectiveness. The organization was created by Claremont McKenna College students in 2005. The professional services that SOURCE offers to local nonprofits are entirely free of charge and assist the nonprofits in their delivery of services to their clients. During the 2008-2009 academic year, SOURCE worked closely with six local nonprofit organizations, serving a wide range of clientele. During the fall of 2008, SOURCE's partner organizations served more than 320 clients through the following nonprofit service providers.

Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin - M3C Fellows (AmeriCorps): An Edgewood College student and AmeriCorps (M3C) volunteer, Stacie Pinzl, has provided critical leadership and coordination for a central campus volunteers program that provides after-school support to children in one of Madison's largest homeless shelters. Over the 2008-2009 academic year, Stacie has single-handedly organized and coordinated an ongoing effort to recruit Edgewood College student volunteers, making it feasible to operate the after-school recreational programming for children in the Madison shelter.

Episcopal Ministry at MIT, Cambridge, MA - Lutheran Episcopal Ministry: Steven Peters, an MIT student, has helped churches in the Boston area renovate their facilities and change their building usage habits to conserve energy and lower heating bills. Because of his work, several congregations in the Boston area are wasting less energy and are able to redirect funds to programs serving children and others in need in the local neighborhoods. Steve has helped these churches find practical ways to live into their theology of caring for creation and has inspired other students at MIT to reach out to the community with their skills.

Flagler College, St. Augustine, Florida - Flagler College Students in Free Enterprise: Flagler College Students in Free Enterprise prepares student leaders to create a better world for everyone. Their outreach programs are designed to create economic opportunity for others by helping them solve real world problems. 50 Flagler College Students in Free Enterprise from many different academic disciplines work together to create programs that positively impact lives and teach young working adults about the impact of dishonesty on businesses, people and the economy. FCSIFE partnered with Winmark Corporation to create employee training videos dealing with ethical behavior in a retail setting to promote and encourage thought and discussion on the ethical aspects of life and how it relates to specific issues in the workplace.

Franklin Pierce University, Rindge, New Hampshire - Reality Check: Reality Check is a student-created and student-run community service group at Franklin Pierce University. Through dramatic skits at schools and other venues, the students bring difficult issues teens are facing into the open, addressing suicide, drunk driving, drug use, cutting, domestic violence, and help them see there are ways to make healthy choices. Reality Check was created by a sophomore student in 1997, and since has presented for many public and non-profit schools and organizations in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. In the past year, the group has reached approximately 2,000 individuals.

Grove City College, Grove City, PA - The Student Philanthropy Project: The Student Philanthropy Project was launched at Grove City College to provide an opportunity to help fulfill The College's mission to encourage students the development of moral character shaped by Christian principles who are prepared to serve as responsible citizens and leaders of society. By integrating philanthropy into the classroom, giving students a forum for hands-on experience in researching and supporting non-profit service organizations, the Project helps students learn how to be engaged citizens and to understand the important role philanthropy plays in the health of local communities. In 2008 $4,000 dollars contributed to Grove City College for this purpose was awarded in three grants of $2,000, $1,000, and $1,000 respectively. Students planned and hosted an award ceremony for the three finalists selected through the class project.

Keuka College, Keuka Park, NY - Up 'til Dawn Program: Up 'til Dawn is a student led and run philanthropic program in which college students nationwide raise funds for and awareness of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The student leadership committee worked with the St. Jude's field director to set fund raising and awareness goals for the current school year. Over 100 Keuka College students teamed up to write more than 2,000 letters reaching all of Keuka's 963 on-campus students with information about St. Jude's, and raised more than $9,000 for St. Jude's Research Hospital. The Keuka Up 'til Dawn program has, to date, raised more money than the other first year programs and matched or exceeded funds raised by more established programs at larger schools.

The University of Tulsa, Tulsa, OK, - SENEA Project: The SENEA Project presents technologically appropriate energy solutions to the millions of underprivileged minority residents of northeastern Asia. SENEA team members design sustainable systems out of raw materials that are available in the region and priced reasonably for the target community. A primary outcome of the SENEA Project is the construction of a model home and greenhouse called the Sustainable Shepherd's Residence (SSR), which was designed to keep the plants and soil from freezing even in the harsh sub-Siberian winters of the region. The project site has already been visited by the mayors of several local villages, provincial policy makers and representatives of many other foreign and domestic NGOs working in the region. The SENEA team has been invited to return during the summer of 2009 and has requests from six different sites for sustainable energy model projects.

The University of Dubuque, Dubuque, Illinois - Web of Life Student Environmental Organization: Web of Life is a leader in environmental awareness and education within the Dubuque community. On campus, Web of Life regularly raises environmental awareness and promotes environmental stewardship through informational campaigns and activities. University of Dubuque's Web of Life Student Environmental Organization has impacted student involvement in environmental awareness and education programming within the Dubuque community, from the group's ongoing participation in a highway clean-up program to their effort to restore Osprey, a fish eating bird of prey, back into eastern Iowa.

University of Saint Francis, Fort Wayne, Indiana - One Block at a Time: One Block at a Time, in cooperation with the Haitian Health Foundation, is an organization whose focus is to provide homes and other assistance for the impoverished people of Haiti. University of Saint Francis student, Cortney Shepard, has motivated different campus clubs to create novel means of fund-raising for the purchase of infant formula. Cortney provided the groups with suggested fund-raiser ideas, but encouraged them to come up with ideas that suited their specific areas. Each club that volunteered to help was assigned a particular month to promote the formula project and raise funds. The response was so positive that often there were two groups working simultaneously to create awareness and collect money. As of March 2009, she has been instrumental in securing $3,300 for an infant formula project and collecting donations from student fund-raising efforts and the general public.

"We received so many outstanding nominations this year that we decided to award an additional three student-led activities rather than the planned seven," said Bob Maginn, Chairman of the Jenzabar Foundation and CEO and Chairman of the Board of Jenzabar, Inc. "Honorees should be extremely proud of their accomplishments and the beneficiary outcomes they have made possible through their efforts. We are eager to help these individuals progress as student leaders and continue to make a positive impact on society."

Don’t Forget Social Networking for Recruiting, Says nowHIRE

Don’t Forget Social Networking for Recruiting, Says nowHIRE

New white paper advises companies to consider the applicant experience when building their career site.

Detroit, MI (PRWEB) August 7, 2008

Social media has changed the game in recruiting. Organizations need to be creative and compelling in their communications to attract the best job candidates, and support it with an interactive career site (http://www. nowhire. com/register_SN_whitepaper. htm).

In Social Networking and Your Career Site: Innovating for a Better Applicant Experience (http://www. nowhire. com/register_SN_whitepaper. htm), applicant tracking vendor nowHIRE urges organizations to take the time to understand the new breed of applicants. Job seekers today are highly connected through online social networking (http://www. nowhire. com/register_SN_whitepaper. htm) sites like Facebook, LinkedIn and MySpace. And they expect that same level of interaction from potential employers.

“Static career sites no longer work,” said Joseph Impastato, president of nowHIRE. “Many of the applicants live online, and expect more than one-way communications from companies they’d like to work for. Companies need to reach out with new media like blogging and video tours, which brands their company as forward-thinking and applicant-friendly.”

Since applicants are consumers of the corporate brand, companies that design or redo their career site must remember specific candidate demographics. These include the age of the applicants, what their primary language is, their education level and what type of job they’re looking for (hourly or salaried).

Since career sites are the front end that integrates into the company’s hiring system, companies can do much to keep the conversation going. Pre-screening assessments (http://www. nowhire. com/register_SN_whitepaper. htm) should be designed so applicants can stop and start on their own time. Automated responses to applicant interaction personalize the company’s keep-in-touch communications (such as interview scheduling, status checks, etc.)

The nowHIRE application tracking system is the only system on the market focused on the applicant experience. nowHIRE provides the frontline technical support for candidates, with experts that respond to their questions quickly. Candidates can check their status online, and the system supports multiple languages. All these functions help candidates feel valued and respected during the application process.

PAIRS Foundation Offering Free Classes to Help Combat Veterans Impacted by PTSD

PAIRS Foundation Offering Free Classes to Help Combat Veterans Impacted by PTSD

The nonprofit PAIRS Foundation will offer a series of free 90-minute online classes this month to help returning combat veterans and family members impacted by PTSD. Early intervention through effective education and skills training is critical for combat veterans and families.

Fort Lauderdale, FL (PRWEB) November 11, 2009

The nonprofit PAIRS Foundation will offer a series of free 90-minute online classes this month to help returning combat veterans and family members impacted by PTSD. "Early intervention through effective education and skills training is critical for combat veterans and family members," said Seth Eisenberg (http://setheisenberg. pairs. com), President and CEO of PAIRS Foundation (http://www. pairs. com).

An estimated one in five U. S. veterans returning from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan is reported to have symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Eisenberg said. Symptoms include flashbacks and nightmares that may cause memory and attention problems, anxiety, irritability, depression, insomnia, isolation and withdrawal. PTSD also impacts many others; an estimated quarter of a million Americans will develop PTSD at some point in their lives after a terrifying experience, from car accidents to hurricanes, abuse, rape and other traumatic events.

Eisenberg delivered a plenary address at the "Spiritual Trauma of War" conference sponsored by the Veterans Administration in Chicago this month and a workshop for VA professionals on educational approaches to help couples impacted by combat deployment improve communication, emotional understanding, and strengthen marriages (http://participant. pairs. com/about).

PAIRS Foundation is actively collaborating with the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center and other military and VA facilities nationwide to help active duty, reserve, guard, veterans and family members impacted by combat deployment.

"We're honored that our collaboration with the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center was recently selected as a 'Best Practice' by the Veterans Administration," Eisenberg said.

Chaplain Ron Craddock, Chief of Chaplain Services at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center, said the program is making a difference. "PAIRS is changing the lives of returning combat veterans and their spouses," he said.

"Combat deployment can significantly impact couple relationships," said Eisenberg. "The added impact of PTSD and TBI on many returning veterans requires urgent attention."

Eisenberg cited research conducted on a pilot group at Charlie Norwood that showed a 25 percent increase in the number of couples experiencing marital distress following deployment. "Early, effective intervention is needed to reduce the impact on these couples and their children," Eisenberg said, "Curriculum-based educational programs based on emotional literacy can make an immediate difference for these soldiers and their families," Eisenberg said.

"Following a weekend PAIRS retreat for returning combat veterans and spouses," Eisenberg said, "the percentage of couples able to effectively communicate with each other increased from 26 to 79 percent."

Laurie Ott of the CSRA Wounded Warrior Care Project (http://www. projectaugusta. org/index. htm) in Augusta, GA was one of the program sponsors. "PAIRS is exactly what we were looking for in terms of real relationship skills for combat-returned and wounded warriors and their spouses," she said. "Our survey before and after PAIRS shows a profound impact on both couples' perception of their relationship and hope for the future... helping our heroes and their families reconnect after combat, and giving them the skills to improve their relationships and communication."

PAIRS Foundation, Inc., is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization established in 1983 to develop, refine and deliver educational programs that enhance interpersonal relationships, conduct research and train course leaders.

GlobalSign Releases Code Signing Certificates for Individual Software Developers

GlobalSign Releases Code Signing Certificates for Individual Software Developers

GlobalSign’s publicly trusted Code Signing Certificates now available to qualified Independent Software Developers.

RSA San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) March 2, 2010

GlobalSign Inc (www. globalsign. com), one of the longest established Certification Authorities (CA) and specialists in supplying Digital Identities used to authenticate the publisher of software and produce tamper evident virtual “shrink-wrapped” software, has today announced the introduction of GlobalSign’s Code Signing Certificates for Individual Developers. GlobalSign Code Signing Certificates support many popular developer platforms ranging from Microsoft Authenticode (including the new Windows 7 and VBA) to Adobe AIR.

Up until recently, developers of downloadable software had little choice on how to secure their application, protect their brand identity, and reduce download abandonment due to un-trusted warning messages that result from unsigned or self-signed code. More and more operating systems insist that code available for installation be digitally signed to provide the recipient assurances that the identity of the publisher has been verified by an independent and trusted source and that the code was not altered after it was signed. Pop-ups ranging from Running Unsigned Code / Executables can be dangerous! to Publisher = Unknown; “Are you sure you want to install this application to you computer have significant negative business impact, slowing distribution as would-be installers are cautioned to pause or even abandon installation completely.

GlobalSign will continue to offer Code Signing Certificates to publishers affiliated with legal organizations such as enterprise, educational institutes, and government entities; however independent software developers will now be provided an alternative method to obtain a “vetted” digital identity using alternative identity verification processes focused on the individual applicant. In both the case of individual software developers and organization software vendors, the end user experience will be the same in that a trusted message will appear encouraging increased downloads and installations.

“GlobalSign sees expanding publicly trusted code signing to individual developers as an important way to increase the security model for applications developed on key platforms such as Microsoft Authenticode and Adobe AIR. Delivering a secure method to publish software to both Organizations and Independent software developers moves the market one step closer to expecting publically verifiable code as the standard for acceptance.” according to Lila Kee, Director of Product Marketing.

Boris’ Bright Idea - The Mayor adds Tim Campbell to his team

Tim Campbell, of BBC's 'The Apprentice' fame and now CEO of Bright Ideas Trust, has been appointed the Mayor's Ambassador for Training and Apprenticeships.

(PRWeb UK) July 11, 2010

Boris Johnson's drive to create more apprenticeships and training opportunities across London has steered him towards Tim Campbell, CEO of Bright Ideas Trust. He has appointed Tim as the Mayor's Ambassador for Training and Enterprise.

As CEO of Bright Ideas Trust, Tim is helping young people aged 16-30 develop their business idea. They offer support in the form of funding as well as continual advice from business experts. Tim stated “Through my discussions with the Mayor’s team the synergy of their goals and ours became obvious. We both wish to improve the situation for young people in London and feel in these particular times, things are very difficult”.

Initially, the voluntary role will focus on a major campaign to increase the number of apprentices across London and develop the Mayor’s overall apprenticeship strategy. The Mayor also wants to draw on Tim’s unique motivational, business and leadership skills to inspire business and Londoners and companies to develop and become involved in new training opportunities, as well as setting up new businesses in the capital. The Mayor felt Tim, through his role at Bright Ideas Trust, was “incredibly suited to this important challenge, bringing extensive business experience and investment in London's aspiring entrepreneurs.“

On his appointment, Tim commented “London is a great city of opportunity brimming with ideas and talent that we continually harness. There is also a huge, untapped talent pool hidden within businesses and individuals across our capital. The key to unlocking it is the development of real in-work training initiatives that allow people to realise their potential and businesses to develop those home-grown skills to the benefit of the company.

“Some of those on apprenticeships will come up with bright ideas for creating wealth and this will also be a key focus for me. I am looking forward to working closely with the Mayor and his team in supporting exciting new training opportunities across London."

Boris Johnson believes “London’s future prosperity depends on the quality and skills of its workforce and it is essential at this time that we step up a gear in our drive to create more training opportunities across the city. His [Tim’s] understanding of London and its businesses, plus his unwavering enthusiasm, will inspire and motivate others to ingrain training initiatives into the heart of their business planning and make the most of the talent we have in London."
