Pasadena Plastic Surgeon Among National Group Releasing Tenth Annual Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Statistics

Pasadena Plastic Surgeon Among National Group Releasing Tenth Annual Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Statistics

A survey from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery shows that nearly 11.7 million cosmetic procedures were performed in 2007 across the United States.

Pasadena, CA (PRWEB) April 1, 2008

Dr. Stewart Wang, a board-certified Pasadena plastic surgeon and member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), is among a group of approximately 2,400 board-certified plastic surgeons in the United States who released their 11th annual cosmetic plastic surgery statistics this week. ASAPS, founded in 1967, is the world's leading organization for cosmetic surgery education and research with members in the U. S., Canada and 32 other countries.

More than 14,000 questionnaires were mailed nationwide to a random sampling of board-certified doctors in three specialties most likely to perform several or more of the 39 top cosmetic procedures. Results of the survey were used to project national data on the number of cosmetic procedures in 2007, which totaled nearly 11.7 million. This figure is a 2 percent increase from 2006 and a 457 percent increase over a 10 year period.

Plastic surgeons who are active members of ASAPS performed an average of 322 surgical procedures last year. Members also performed an average of 839 nonsurgical procedures. Dr. Wang has been an ASAPS member since 2005. He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and specializes in cosmetic surgery of the face and the entire body.

"As the ASAPS figures suggest, there continues to be a growing interest in plastic surgery in Pasadena and my new office serving the Inland Empire is busier than ever," says Dr. Wang. "The procedures that are most popular nationally are also some of the most popular at my plastic surgery practice serving Pasadena, Pomona, Rancho Cucamonga, and other communities in Southern California."

According to the ASAPS, the top five surgical procedures in 2007 were liposuction (456,828 procedures), breast augmentation (399,440), eyelid surgery (240,763), abdominoplasty (185,335) and breast reduction (153,087).

Women had 91 percent of all cosmetic procedures, a total of 10.6 million procedures. Men had 9 percent of all cosmetic procedures, nearly 1.1 million procedures. People ages 35-50 had almost half of all cosmetic procedures. People identifying themselves in racial and ethnic minorities including Hispanics, African-Americans and Asians accounted for 21 percent of the total number of procedures nationwide.

"With more surgical and non-surgical options than ever before, it only makes sense that cosmetic surgery in Pasadena such as face lift, breast enhancement and abdominoplasty remains popular," adds Dr. Wang. "In addition, injectables like BOTOX® Cosmetic and Restylane® are helping people look their best without significant discomfort or downtime."

Wang Plastic Surgery (www. wangplasticsurgery. com) maintains three cosmetic surgery offices in the greater Los Angeles/Southern California area--Alhambra, Arcadia, and Upland, California. Dr. Stewart Wang is a board-certified plastic surgeon and diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery, a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), and a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). The practice offers a complete array of cosmetic surgery and medical spa options. Please credit the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) when citing statistical data.

Milestone Project Marks Year of Job Creation

The transfer of the former General Motors plant in Newport to plug-in hybrid electric vehicle start-up Fisker Automotive earlier this week marks a milestone in nearly a year of work by the Markell Administration to improve economic opportunities for Delawareans. Since August 2009, the Delaware Economic Development Office has helped create the potential for 6,158 new jobs in the state.

Dover, DE (Vocus) July 22, 2010

The transfer of the former General Motors plant in Newport to plug-in hybrid electric vehicle start-up Fisker Automotive earlier this week marks a milestone in nearly a year of work by the Markell (http://governor. delaware. gov) Administration to improve economic opportunities for Delawareans. Since August 2009, the Delaware Economic Development Office has helped create the potential for 6,158 new jobs in the state.

Fisker purchased the shuttered auto assembly plant with plans to employ 2,495 workers when fully operational. The project is one of many that contributed to significant job creation over the last year. Other projects include the following recent announcements:
PBF Energy has acquired the former Valero refinery in Delaware City and restart operations as early as spring 2011, supporting 600 full-time jobs.  Sallie Mae, the nation’s leading provider of student loans and administrator of college savings plans, will relocate its corporate headquarters from Reston, Va to Delaware, which will add a minimum of 1,500 new jobs to Delaware’s workforce over the next five years.  US LUBES will consolidate its East Coast locations to Delaware and create 30 to 35 new jobs.  The Association of Educational Publishers is relocating its national headquarters from Logan Township, N. J. to Wilmington, bringing 14 new jobs into the city of Wilmington.  Summit Aviation is expanding its full service aviation center and repair facility in Middletown, adding up to 188 new jobs.  Testing Machines Inc., a supplier of laboratory testing instrumentation, is relocating its headquarters and manufacturing operations from Long Island, New York to Delaware, with plans to employ 50 people in New Castle.  Baltimore Aircoil Company, a worldwide manufacturer and marketer of heat transfer and ice thermal storage products, consolidated its operations from Illinois to Delaware, creating 83 new manufacturing jobs in Milford.

“These efforts have contributed to lowering the unemployment rate in Delaware from the high in February and March of 9.2 percent to 8.5 percent in June,” said DEDO Secretary Alan Levin.

Levin marked the milestone occasion by thanking his staff.

“In today’s economy this accomplishment is no easy feat,” said Levin. “For the most part, these are direct hires and do not include indirect and support jobs that will follow. As a taxpayer and citizen of Delaware, I want to thank each of you for the difference you make. It is both an honor and privilege to work with such a professional team.”

The projects are made possible with the Delaware Strategic Fund (http://dedo. delaware. gov/Strategic. shtml), the State’s primary funding source to provide loans and grants to businesses for job creation, relocation, expansion and Brownfield redevelopment.

In addition, the establishment of new programs like the http://governor. delaware. gov/docs/BFF_information. pdf (http://governor. delaware. gov/docs/BFF_information. pdf) Business Finder’s Fee] (BFF) and the Limited Investment for Financial Traction (http://www. dedo. delaware. gov/lift) (LIFT) bolsters activities to support job growth and assist small businesses. To date, LIFT has served 43 Delaware companies which has positively impacted the lives of more than 500 employees.

About the Delaware Economic Development Office
The Delaware Economic Development Office is an executive state agency responsible for attracting new investors and businesses to the state, promoting the expansion of existing industry, assisting small and minority-owned businesses, promoting and developing tourism and creating new and improved employment opportunities for all citizens of the State.

Advanced Vehicle Research Center Expands Commercial Fleet Offerings in May 2009

The Advanced Vehicle Research Center (AVRC) has added several new technologies to the current offerings in alternative fuel and infrastructure for advanced vehicles. The AVRC is a private for-profit corporation that promotes alternative fuel research and technology commercialization, with a special focus on transportation energy research and development.

Danville, VA (PRWEB) May 2, 2009

The Advanced Vehicle Research Center (AVRC) has added several new technologies to the current offerings in alternative fuel and infrastructure for advanced vehicles. The AVRC is a private for-profit corporation that promotes alternative fuel research and technology commercialization, with a special focus on transportation energy research and development.

The AVRC works with companies that have commercially viable technology and products that can support our nation's need to achieve energy independence through the electrification and conversion of the 'legacy' vehicles. We provide marketing assistance, hands-on installation services, and serve as a business development resource our technology partners. Working with the leading universities of the Southeast region, AVRC also provides education and outreach programs for training in alternative fuel technologies.

During the past two years, AVRC has worked with Hymotion/A123Systems providing services to commercial and governmental fleets with the Hymotion PHEV system for the Toyota Prius. During this time it was recognized that, for Electric Vehicles to become mainstream, they must be just as easy to use, and to fuel, as their gasoline counterparts. This means that electric vehicle charging stations must be conveniently available to electric vehicle owners wherever they work and recreate, and that this infrastructure should be implemented before the adoption of electric vehicles begins to hit full stride. The AVRC investigated the electric charging station market and saw that Coulomb Technologies / NovaCharge to be the system of choice. AVRC has entered into a business development agreement to market, sale, and service their charging system to complement the existing portfolio of AVRC offerings.

"NovaCharge is committed to creating the highest quality and best trained partner network in the EV Infrastructure industry," said Helda Rodriguez, President, NovaCharge, LLC, "We only recruit partners who are passionate about customers and who are committed to excellence. Dick Dell, president of AVRC, has a track record of demonstrated success and commitment to customer quality, and we are very proud to have him as a part of our growing partner network."

AVRC Green Leasing Options

AVRC now provides fleets with a flexible purchasing solution and now offers leasing options on a number of alternative fueled vehicles and equipment systems. A few of these options include:

(PRWEB) August 5, 2005

Pharos Systems International today announced the release of the Omega PS100 highly customizable touch-panel network terminal device that enables advanced print and copy management functionality in corporations and universities. The Pharos Omega facilitates savings of over 30% in print and copy costs through elimination of waste via selective print release and departmental chargeback. Successful in market tests in North America, Europe, Asia, and South Africa, the Pharos Omega was also a part of the award-winning solution for Best Public Access Application in the State of New York for the Brooklyn Public Library.

Pharos Omega, which features a user-friendly, full-color, touch-screen interface, acts as a launching pad for powerful Pharos software solutions. With a customizable look and feel that can reflect custom brand logos or images, the Omega facilitates accurate accounting of all print and copy costs through a full range of cost-recovery features. In addition, Pharos Omega promotes informed, responsible user printing through its cost notification, chargeback, and selective print release functionality.

Marquette University uses the Pharos Omega PS100 to charge back printing costs to the department, budget center, project code, or personal account to which users want to record their activity. The wide variety of chargeback options offered by Omega helps foster both personal and departmental accountability for print and copy costs. “Initial end user response to the intuitive interface is very positive,” notes Marc Belanger, Applications Specialist for Marquette University. “The Omega unquestionably sets the industry standard for quality and convenience. By consolidating printing and copying onto one machine, we’ve reduced the number of MFPs as well as the total number of terminals required. The result is a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) and a single, common user interface across the entire campus.” And because Pharos Omega seamlessly integrates into billing systems, the university can accurately account for all printing and copying costs from all users.

To cater to the mobile needs of the 21st century workforce, the Pharos Omega has several features designed to provide users with printing flexibility and security. Omega enables the Pharos PrintHere™ feature, allowing users to send documents to a central print queue, and then collect their printed documents from any Omega-enabled device. “The Omega has allowed us to pool printing devices, enabling users to choose any unused device to print their documents and nearly eliminating waiting lines,” noted Mike Bell, an IT Manager at University of Rochester Medical Center. “Omega also offers a variety of charging methods, giving us the flexibility to charge all users for printing via ID cards, visitor cards, or departmental copy cards. This enhances service and convenience throughout the medical library and medical student computing areas.”

Kevin Pickhardt, CEO of Pharos Systems International says, “The Pharos Omega not only features state-of-the-art print and copy tracking functionality, but it also connects users to printers, copiers, and MFPs from multiple manufacturers. There’s nothing like it on the market today. In today’s environment where security and improved service are so critical to all large organizations, we are pleased to offer technology that provides both.“

Silicon Valley Entrepreneurs Offer Corporate Clients Unlikely Key to Success -- Meditation

Silicon Valley Entrepreneurs Offer Corporate Clients Unlikely Key to Success -- Meditation

Medical data now conclusively supports the fact that meditation reduces stress levels and leads to healthier, happier, and more productive lives for its practitioners. The problem for most people is that they don't know where to begin. Greg de Vries and Brett Jennings---who each credit meditation for their professional success---have turned their attention to addressing the need for practical meditation education in corporate America. Beginning in September they will offer their popular meditation classes on-site to corporate clients who wish to enhance productivity, performance, and communication in the workplace.

San Jose, CA (PRWEB) August 21, 2007

Upon first glance, Greg de Vries (http://www. mymeditationcoach. com/authors/2/Greg-de-Vries) and Brett Jennings (http://www. mymeditationcoach. com/authors/4/Brett-Jennings) may seem like your typical Silicon Valley entrepreneurs. They both received Bachelor of Science degrees from Santa Clara University and went on to start high-tech companies in the booming 1990s. Both de Vries and Jennings achieved success and wealth while still young, but like true serial entrepreneurs, they did not rest on their laurels -- after selling their first successful companies, they went back and founded new ones, achieving even greater success.

Although most people envy the material wealth of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, typically, their success comes with a price -- incredible stress. Many upstart CEOs make millions only to live unbearable lives of intense, self-imposed pressure, and see their family lives crumble around them even as they achieve more material riches. But this has not been the case for Greg de Vries or Brett Jennings, and they are now focusing their energies on showing students that it doesn't have to be the case with them, either.

Although de Vries and Jennings traveled in the same circles throughout the 90s, the two actually met not in college or at a business confab, but at a meditation group. Both de Vries and Jennings credit meditation (http://www. mymeditationcoach. com/categories/Health-Benefits/) not only with their low stress levels and high quality of life, but also with much of their professional success. Says de Vries, "I don't know where I would be without meditation."

There is no disputing the fact that people in high-pressure professions come under a lot of stress, and there is increasing medical and scientific research linking stress to real, physical maladies. In fact, stress has been linked to high blood pressure and heart disease; two of the deadliest killers of Americans today.

"There are a lot of negative ways to release stress," says de Vries. Self-destructive behavior such as drinking, drug abuse, gambling, and other vices offer an escape for many stress-riddled professionals. But these stress-reduction "techniques" typically exacerbate the problems leading to the original stress by causing people to miss work, face financial difficulties, or even have marital problems.

Meditation (http://www. mymeditationcoach. com) offers a positive alternative. According to the National Institute of Health's 1994 report on meditation, practitioners of meditation show notably lower secretion of stress hormones. In 34 studies performed by the Institute of Noetic Science, meditation was shown to reduce both acute and chronic anxiety. And more directly, cardiologist Dr. Paul Robinson of the Emory University School of Medicine, says, "The jury is in; it's not even a question that [meditation] works. It. . . has important physiologic effects in terms of lowering blood pressure, decreasing heart rate, or decreasing levels of pain."

Clearly, introducing practical meditation techniques to the business world would have positive effects. Greg de Vries and Brett Jennings offer a strikingly non-"New Age" brand of meditation to corporate clients interested in enhancing workplace productivity, lowering health care costs, and allowing employees an opportunity to release stress in a positive, healthy manner.

De Vries and Jennings offer both public and private meditation classes. They host a popular meditation group in the Silicon Valley area, and they're offering a five-week meditation course in San Jose, beginning September 10. On-line information for the course can be found at the San Jose Meditation (http://www. sanjosemeditation. com) website. But the duo's real goal is to reach out to corporate America through in-house workshops to introduce their non-denominational stress-reduction techniques.

"We have a full curriculum," says de Vries. And he and Jennings are particularly qualified to teach meditation in a professional setting, given their entrepreneurial gravitas. "This is meditation for practical people---it appeals to people of all religious backgrounds, and none. It is for anyone who wants to live a happier, healthier, more productive, and more rewarding life."

Straight Wives Respond to McGreevey at Launching of New Book

Straight Wives Respond to McGreevey at Launching of New Book

EVENT: Book Signing Forum DATE: Sunday, September 24, 2006 PLACE: Sister's Uptown Bookstore 1942 Amsterdam Avenue(156TH ST) TIME: 1:00 – 3:00 P. M.

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) September 20, 2006

In the midst of all of the media publicity over James McGreevey’s new book “The Confession,” a new book has just been released to tell the real story of the emotional turmoil on the part of the straight wives.

Straight Wives, Shattered Lives, by Bonnie Kaye, M. Ed., was written in response to the growing public sympathy for gay men married to straight women. In Kaye’s newest book on this topic, she has compiled the stories from 27 women from around the world who are part of her 7,000 international member support network. A new website was created for the book at www. Straightwives. com.

The book will officially be launched at a forum/book signing on Sunday, September 24 at Sister’s Uptown Bookstore located at 1942 Amsterdam Avenue at 156 Street from 1:00 p. m. – 3:00 p. m. Kaye and a number of her women contributors will discuss what James McGreevey’s wife is keeping silent about—namely the implications of living with the lie of their husbands’ sexuality.

According to Kaye, a national expert who has counseled over 20,000 women and 1,000 gay husbands since 1984, “There has been a recent growing awareness to the plight of married gay men. This started with the movie “Brokeback Mountain,” and now continues with James McGreevey’s new book “The Confession.” Although it is important to understand the hardships that gay married men face living this deception, no one has accurately described the emotional shattering of their wives.”

Kaye’s online support group members were disturbed at the imbalanced picture that was being painted by the media. While the men were sympathetically portrayed as lovers doomed due to societal pressures, their wives were represented as silently suffering women who turned a blind eye. “It’s almost as if the wives were an after thought,” says Kaye. “There is no way that anyone could have a hint of the devastation our women face having their lives torn apart when they find out the cause of the failure in their marriages—namely homosexuality.”

Women wrote to Kaye stating that they felt their perspectives needed to be heard accurately and with sensitivity. That’s why she offered them a chance to tell the true stories behind the heartache of women living with this lie. Although every woman in this situation feels isolated and alone, it is estimated in this country over 4 million women are currently in or have been in marriages to gay or bisexual men. Kaye explains, “The problem is that when the husband comes out of the closet, their wife moves deeper in. Women internalize the shame of their husband’s homosexuality. Family members and friends wonder how this can happen. In some cases, they blame the wife. They say ‘He wasn’t gay when he married, so why is he gay now? What did you do to turn him gay?’ People don’t understand homosexuality. Wives of gay men understand it least of all, and often believe it is their fault.”

Kaye contends that gay husbands have no choice in their homosexuality; however, they do have a choice in being honest with their wives. “Many of our women suffer for years with men who are resentful and angry because they feel trapped living a lie. The wives have their self and sexual esteem stripped down layer by layer until they no longer remember who they were before the marriage. No woman likes to feel as if she is ‘undesirable’ due to years of sexual rejection and humiliation.” Kaye has worked with women from every walk of life including models, government officials, CEO’s, stockbrokers, and wives of clergymen. They live in all different parts of the country and other parts of the world. She explains, “It doesn’t matter where you live, how beautiful you are, your level of education, or how much money you earn. Living with a gay man takes away your sense of self and leaves you feeling emotionally void.”

While some couples work to keep these marriages together, Kaye takes the approach of divorce. “These marriages are mentally unhealthy for both the wife and the gay husband. When you read the stories of our women, you will see the years of wasted life that could have been salvaged if they would have known the truth earlier or even at all. Two people can successfully co-parent their children from different homes, remain a family unit of sorts until the children are grown, and hopefully salvage a good friendship. But living this life of confusion and self-doubt only leads to unhappiness for both parties.”

This is Kaye’s third book on the topic. Her other two books are, Is He Straight? A Checklist for Women Who Wonder (2000), and Gay Husbands/Straight Wives: A Mutation of Life (2003). Kaye’s site at www. Gayhusbands. com serves as a resource for Oprah Winfrey, Dr. Phil, Montel Williams, and Anne Landers.

Straight Wives, Shattered Lives can be purchased through Airleaf Publishing.

Escondido, CA (PRWEB) August 24, 2006

Children’s Educational Network (CEN) announced its Military Gift program that honors parents who serve in the armed forces protecting our freedom. The program provides military families worldwide with free software downloaded over the Internet that keeps kids safe from online predators, porn, hate, violence and drugs. The gift includes a lifetime subscription to the fully-featured, premium content TUKI Freedom Browser recently launched at the Sean Hannity Freedom Concert held in Chula Vista, CA. This software helps protect children and grandchildren from the dangers of the Internet.

According to Greg Writer, CEO of Children’s Educational Network, the company designed and developed this software with a patriotic theme and content to honor our country, pay tribute to the members of our armed forces and help the dependent children of our fallen military heroes.

“We were inspired to develop this unique product that protects children from the perils of the Internet as we became affiliated with the Sean Hannity Freedom Concert,” said Writer.

The TUKI Freedom Browser software is another member to the TUKI family of kid safe software. The uniqueness of this version is its patriotic theme with content that educates children about our country’s history and the sacrifices our men and women in uniform went through to secure our freedom.

Like other TUKI software releases, the proprietary browser protects children from online predators, pornography, hate, violence and drugs and offers educational experience as well. As such, it is much more than a simple Internet filter.

To claim their free software, military families need to go to www. TukiFreedomBrowser. com, purchase an annual membership for $47, and then email their receipt and proof of active military service back. A rebate equal to the purchase price will be immediately processed to their credit card.

“Now we can protect children from the perils of the Internet and support the men, women and children who have given us our freedom! This new product educates kids about our heritage, our past and present Presidents, our armed forces, and our war heroes within an exciting patriotic environment,” said Writer.

To kick off this new Military Gift program, Children’s Educational Network gave over 8,000 copies of the TUKI Freedom Browser to the attendees of the Hannity Freedom Concert on August 2nd, many of whom are current or past members of the armed forces.

The TUKI Freedom Browser (http://www. TukiFreedomBrowser. com (http://www. TukiFreedomBrowser. com)) utilizes unique technology that allows children to surf only safe, parent-approved, child-appropriate websites, which is the safest and most reliable method according to industry experts. The browser also has a function called the “Internet Protection Module™” that prevents children from surfing the web with an unprotected browser, once the TUKI Freedom Browser.

The technology allows parents a great deal of personalization, permitting them to customize the browsers interaction with their children and tailor their Internet experience. The product works with any Internet Service Provider and is built on the Microsoft Windows Operating System and Internet Explorer platform.

Hamden, CT (PRWEB) May 3, 2008

Planning For College has prepared an exclusive report, "The New Age of College Planning: How coaches are changing the College Planning Process, and why they can work for you". By working with a comprehensive, knowledgeable coaching service, you can get the information you need to make sound decisions - not only about how to choose the right school, but how to pay for it effectively and make the choices necessary for a high-quality college experience. With the importance of a college education to today's students, finding the right coach to guide you through the process may be the wisest investment you can make for college success.

"Today, there are more students than ever competing for entry into top colleges, but there are fewer resources available to families to assist with the college planning process," explains John T. Weir, President and CEO of Planning For College. "College coaches can help make sense of the enormous amount of information that students and parents receive, and can help ensure that the college selection process is a successful one." Planning For College's report is the result of information pulled from the latest college trend reports as well as interviews with coaches, financial aid officers and guidance counselors nationwide.

According to Weir, Planning for College (http://www. planningforcollege. com) was founded with the vision that coaching should provide a more comprehensive approach to the college selection process. "Many college coaches only solve a portion of families' concerns, because getting into college is only one part of the process," he says. "Education costs today are skyrocketing, so financing is also a key aspect of college planning. In addition, students who choose the right college - which isn't always the most expensive or most exclusive - are often happier and more effective in school, which can help ensure that they complete their college education in a timely manner. This can save families tens of thousands of dollars, and prepare the student for a successful launch into their ideal career."

Weighted Student Formula Is Improving Schools in Some of the Nation's Biggest Cities

Weighted Student Formula Is Improving Schools in Some of the Nation's Biggest Cities

Much of our education funding is wasted on bureaucracy. The money never actually makes it into the classroom in the form of books, computers, supplies, or even salaries for better teachers. Weighted student formula changes that. Using weighted student formula's decentralized system, education funds are attached to each student and the students can take that money directly to the public school of their choice. At least 15 major school districts have moved to this system of backpack funding. Reason Foundation's new Weighted Student Formula Yearbook examines how the budgeting system is being implemented in each of these places and, based on the real-world data, creates a series of "best practices" that other districts and states can follow to improve the quality of their schools.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) May 1, 2009

Much of our education funding is wasted on bureaucracy. The money never actually makes it into the classroom in the form of books, computers, supplies, or even salaries for better teachers. Weighted student formula changes that. Using weighted student formula's decentralized system, education funds are attached to each student and the students can take that money directly to the public school of their choice.

At least 15 major school districts have moved to this system of backpack funding. Reason Foundation's new Weighted Student Formula Yearbook (http://reason. org/news/show/1007452.html) examines how the budgeting system is being implemented in each of these places and, based on the real-world data, creates a series of "best practices" that other districts and states can follow to improve the quality of their schools.

"To make schools more responsive and accountable to parents and students we need to stop wasting money in central and district offices and get the money flowing directly into classrooms," said Lisa Snell (http://reason. org/experts/show/705.html), author of the Weighted Student Formula Yearbook and director of education at Reason Foundation. "In places where parents have school choice and districts empower their principals and teachers we are seeing increased learning and better test scores."

The results from districts using student-based funding are promising. Prior to 2008, less than half of Hartford, Connecticut's education money made it to the classroom. Now, over 70 percent makes it there. As a result, the district's schools posted the largest gains, over three times the average increase, on the state's Mastery Tests in 2007-08.

San Francisco Unified School District has outperformed the comparable large school districts on the California Standards Tests for seven straight years. And a greater percentage of San Francisco Unified students graduate from high school than almost any other large urban public school system in the country. Across the Bay, Oakland has produced the largest four-year gain among large urban districts on California's standardized tests since implementing results-based budgeting in 2004.

In 2008, Baltimore City Schools faced a $76.9 million budget shortfall. But Superintendent Andres Alonso instituted weighted student formula. He identified $165 million in budget cuts at the central office to eliminate the deficit and redistributed approximately $88 million in central office funds to the schools. By the 2010 school year, Alonso will have cut 489 non-essential teaching jobs from the central office, redirecting 80 percent of the district's operating budget to schools.

The Weighted Student Formula Yearbook identifies key principles that improve educational outcomes as well as the transparency and accountability of our schools:

1. Funding should follow the child to the public school of their choice;
2. Per student funding should vary based on a child's educational needs, with special education students and others receiving larger amounts;
3. Funding should arrive at individual schools in real dollars, not in numbers of teaching positions or staffing ratios.

The experience with weighted student formula also shows that one of the most important factors in the success of schools is decentralized decision-making. As such, Snell finds principals should have autonomy over their budgets and hiring teachers. This local flexibility allows principals to tailor their schools to best fit the needs of their students.

"Eliminating the top-down bureaucracy lets principals and teachers focus on teaching," said Snell.

The report offers in-depth analysis of weighted student formula programs in Baltimore; Belmont Pilot Schools in Los Angeles; Boston Pilot Schools; Chicago; Cincinnati; Clark County (Las Vegas); Denver; Hartford, Hawaii: Houston; New York City; Oakland; Poudre School District in Fort Collins, Colorado; Saint Paul; and San Francisco.

Chasing the 2012 Summer Games

Chasing the 2012 Summer Games

Who will triumph in the most anticipated host city selection process of all time?

NEW YORK, NY (PRWEB) June 8, 2005

The race to secure the bid for the Summer Games of 2012 is the topic of Chetan Dave's latest book "The 2012 Bid: Five Cities Chasing the Summer Games" (published by Authorhouse, June 2005, now available through http://ultimatewriter. com (http://ultimatewriter. com) or http://chetandave. com (http://chetandave. com) and will be available through Amazon and Barnes and Noble in July).

More than any impending Summer Games, the 2012 bid has garnered substantial media and public attention well before the host city was due to be decided. This book condenses what is a mountain of numbers and planning documents diligently presented by each candidate city into information that is slightly simpler to understand for outsiders to give the reader a clearer view into the rather exclusive and often unforgiving world of planning to host the Summer Games.

Dave takes a break from his entertaining novels to bring us inside the didactic plans presented by the organizing committees of Madrid, Moscow, Paris, London, and New York in an easy-to-read yet educational way that allows the reader to compare and contrast each cityÂ’s' proposal on a topic by topic basis. Everything from finances, venue planning, and public opinion to transport infrastructure, meteorological data and security arrangements is carefully summarized for each of the five competing cities. The book also contains a passage describing a collection of past candidate cities - those who won the bid as well as those who were left on the outside looking in.

"The 2012 Bid" is filled with informative facts, in depth figures, and a look at the structure of organizing committees that most of the general public rarely finds time to study. The book is written to provide the bid data for all five cities in a quick and easily understandable manner. It enlightens readers to the fact that what is seen on television during The Games is the final product of years of meticulous planning by the host committee.
