Maldives Urged to Establish Diplomatic Mission in Dhaka

Bangladesh stressed the need for establishing a full-fledged resident mission of the Maldives in Dhaka for exploring the fullest range of possibilities of cooperation between the two Saarc countries.

Bangladesh stressed the need for establishing a full-fledged resident mission of the Maldives in Dhaka for exploring the fullest range of possibilities of cooperation between the two Saarc countries.

Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan made the suggestion when the visiting Foreign Minister of the Maldives, Dr Ahmed Shaheed.

The two sides discussed bilateral issues and trade and economic cooperation.

Strengthening Saarc process, developments in the Middle East, regional and international affairs also came up for discussion.

Dr Shaheed underscored mutual collaboration in tourism sector and air connectivity between Dhaka and Male for "better exploration of huge potential".

He expressed keenness to recruit Bangladeshi manpower, especially teachers, to his country for expanding education among the mass people.

The visiting minister also sought cooperation of Bangladesh in training police personnel of his country.

He assured his country's cooperation with Bangladesh, the chair of Saarc, in bringing dynamism in the Saarc process and strengthening the secretariat.

Terming the Maldives a "good friend" and "dynamic member" of the Saarc, Morshed Khan briefed the activities of Saarc and expressed the hope that after SAFTA becoming operational from July 1 this year, South Asia would be a more attractive destination for investment.

Regarding air connectivity between the two countries, he said, "Bangladesh Biman has limitations, but we welcome the Air Lanka or other Airlines in this regard."

He assured cooperation in providing teachers from Bangladesh and also imparting training to the Maldives cops.
