CAMARILLO, Calif., April 29, 2002 - The Ventura County Scout Council today announced that Bob Brooks, Ventura County Sheriff, has been appointed as the new president of the executive board of the Ventura County Scout Council. In this role, Brooks will lead the executive board, consisting of over 40 community and business leaders from all areas of Ventura County in establishing policy, raising funds, and governing Council affairs.
"I am pleased to have the opportunity to lead this fine organization which has served Ventura County residents for over 90 years," said Brooks about his appointment. "During my term as president, I will focus on increasing the availability of traditional scouting programs in the under served minority communities of Ventura County through churches and schools; assisting the Learning for Life program in establishing a permanent financial base that will allow it to expand its programs, and refocusing the efforts of the Council¡¦s dedicated volunteers toward promoting and funding scouting activities. I look forward to the challenge and am grateful for the assistance of the council's dedicated staff and volunteers."
A 29-year veteran of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department, Brooks was elected Sheriff and appointed by the Board of Supervisors to begin his term on June 27, 1998. In addition to his newly appointed role with the Scouts, Brooks serves on the board of directors for several professional, educational and charitable organizations. He has served as an instructor at California State University Northridge and California Lutheran University where he taught Public Policy Analysis. He is an honorary Rotarian and attends Sonrise Christian Fellowship.
"At a recent church service dedicated to praying for the safety of our troops, Simi Valley Boy Scouts provided a color guard and bugler for the presentation of our flag," said Brooks. "As I watched them lead us in pledging our allegiance to this great land, I was moved by the symbolism of the moment. These young Scouts represented the values that make our nation great and also the hope for the future of our democracy. I was so proud of them and encouraged by knowing that they and thousand of other local Scouts will make America even stronger and better in coming years."
Brooks received his bachelor's degree in public administration from the University of Redlands and his master's degree in organizational management from Regent University. Brooks graduated from the National Sheriffs' Institute, the National Executive Institute and with distinction from the P. O.S. T. Command College. He is in demand as a speaker at symposiums, conferences, and community organizations. His articles have been published in "The Journal of California Law Enforcement" and "American Jails" magazine.
The purpose of the Ventura County Scout Council, chartered in 1921, is to provide an educational program for boys and young adults to build character, to train in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, to grow in personal fitness and to develop leadership skills. Its mission is to bring adults and resources together to guide boys and young adults to become successful, participating, members of the communities in Ventura County.
The Scouting program offered by the Council includes:
-- TIGER CUBS - A one-year program for 1st grade boys and an adult that stresses joint participation. The boys and adults meet weekly to plan family activities and monthly to exchange ideas and participate in an activity with other Tiger Cubs.
-- CUB SCOUTING - A family and home centered program for boys who are in second and third grade. When they are in fourth and fifth grade, they become Webelos Scouts and prepare to become Boy Scouts.
-- BOY SCOUTING - A program for boys 11 through 17 years of age, or boys who have completed the fifth grade, designed to achieve Scouting's objectives through a vigorous outdoor program and peer-group leadership under the guidance of an adult Scoutmaster.
-- VENTURING - A youth development program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) through 20 years of age. Venturing crews specialize in a variety of high adventure, ministry, and hobby interests and is based on a unique and dynamic relationship between youth, adult leaders, and organizations in their communities. This is the fastest growing and one of the most exciting programs offered by the Boy Scouts of America.
