New Publication by MENC: The National Association for Music Education Offers Links between Music and Reading

The Music and Literacy Connection Promotes Relationships between Music and Reading Study

RESTON, VA (PRWEB) May 5, 2004 -

– The Music and Literacy Connection, a new publication by MENC: The National Association for Music Education, is intended to guide general classroom teachers in using music strategies to enrich literacy instruction, and, conversely, music educators will be able to use research-based reading strategies in their music instruction.

From the prelude, “Our intent is to demonstrate the similarities between reading text and music learning so that music and reading teachers can speak a common language with common goals directed toward children’s literacy.”

Also from the prelude, “The Music and Literacy Connection emphasizes “practical suggestions for how reading teachers and music teachers can work collaboratively to move children towards literacy.”

Four major principles guide the scope, context, and organizational structure of this book:

•Children are active learners.

•Music teachers are literacy teachers and general classroom teachers are music teachers.

•Children construct their own knowledge.

•Literacy is not measured by a single output.

According to Aurelia Hartenberger, MENC Southwestern Division president, “This practical book helps music teachers and classroom teachers learn to speak a common language while they work toward a common goal: children’s literacy. It belongs on the desk of all pre-K and elementary music and classroom teachers—where it will be permanently opened to one of the many chapters that apply directly to their daily teaching.”

The Music and Literacy Connection is available from MENC for $32.00. Members of MENC receive the discounted price of $24.00. To order, call 1-800-828-0229.

MENCÂ’s activities and resources have been largely responsible for the establishment of music education as a profession, for the promotion and guidance of music study as an integral part of the school curriculum, and for the development of the National Standards for Arts Education.
