Kenneth Lee Zabel, 44 years young, passed away March 4th, 2009 after being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 1995.
After Ken found out about his diagnosis, he tried to live his life as best as possible. Though, he could no longer continue his fight against HIV/AIDS, Ken has started a new life in a miraculous place above earth.
When AIDS first came to be, no one could have imagined how the epidemic would spread across the world and how many millions of lives it would take. There was no known cause of it or how to protect one's self from it.
AIDS is caused by the HIV virus, and that it can devastate the entire population. We have seen the epidemic erase years from countries' national development, discriminate against the rich and poor and push alienated groups closer to extinction. HIV has become the first 'international' epidemic.
More than twenty-five million people around the world have passed of AIDS-related diseases. In 2007, around 2.1 million men, women and children lost their lives. 33 million people around the world are now living with HIV. Mr. Zabel is one of millions who have been infected with this evil disease. Even so, Kenneth Lee Zabel chose to live his life as best he could before the epidemic robbed him of his beautiful life.
He was born in 1964 to Wiley and Sharon (Bolly) Zabel. During his schooling, Ken Zabel was involved in many extracurricular activities. He played clarinet and excelled in classroom studies. He was a Boy Scout and played baseball, among many other activities, until he graduated.
After graduating, he worked more than full time hours and continued his education at Aurora University. He established a Bachelors Degree in Finance and Human Resources. Shortly after, Ken was recognized as a leader in the business world. He enjoyed his life in California. He was living the American Dream and working at Sonoma Systems, a broadband company, as director of Human Resources and Payroll.
Ken enjoyed tennis, cruises and high rises near the Hollywood Sign. He loved playing pool and winning trophies with his brother and their wives. Ken's absolute favorite thing to do, however, was take his nieces to Great America, the Sandwich Fair, attending their events, playing games with all of them. In 1999, Ken retired when he began feeling ill. He drove back home to be close to the ones he loved. Soon after, he settled into a permanent disability and endured constant pain.
Ken legacy shines through in his parents Sharon and Wiley; Brothers Paul (Carrie) Zabel, Doug (Kristen) Zabel and his three nieces, Kelsie, Avery, Lexie and all of his other relatives. A memorial service was held March of 2009 in Aurora including a eulogy.
Passages Hospice granted care and support for Ken's last weeks in the hospital and nursing home.
