Diabetes Web Forum Launched by UMDNJ and sanofi-aventis U. S.

"Community of Best Practices: Improving Diabetes Patient Care" is an interactive environment for physicians who are dealing with the diabetes epidemic in the U. S. today.

Somerville, NJ (PRWEB) February 13, 2008

The Community of Best Practices(www. diabetesbestpractices. com) is an innovative Web forum launched in January designed to be an interactive environment in which clinicians can discuss and share their best practices related to diabetes care and management. The Website is a collaboration between UMDNJ and Embryon and is supported by an educational grant from sanofi-aventis U. S.

"Diabetes is a growing epidemic and is associated with increased risk of long-term comorbidities," according to Jack L. Leahy, MD, Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington, and faculty member on the Website. "It is our hope that physicians visit the site often and share their views so that it may become an expanding resource of practical information related to diabetes."

Dr. Leahy is one of three physician faculty members who appear on the forum providing expertise in the form of a type 2 diabetes overview and case studies. Clinicians may log on to watch audiovisual presentations, read and contribute to useful tips in the blog, and view a calendar of events and links to diabetes resources.

Within this interactive forum, physicians may reveal specific barriers they have encountered when attempting to meet recommended clinical goals for glycemic control and communicate options for treating and educating patients about achieving treatment goals.

With health care providers feeding the blog, the site will continually expand with new topics and information. This progression will help identify unmet needs that may guide the addition of new case studies and resources, creating a robust dialogue for all health care providers. A contest is already planned for clinicians to submit their best practices related to diabetes patient care. One model story will appear on the site as a highlighted best practice.
