New Hospital Simulation Training Programs Expect to Improve Patient Safety and Reduce Medical Errors

Wappingers Falls, NY (PRWEB) January 8, 2009

Laerdal Medical Corporation and SimMedical, a company of UPMC, announce the development of two cutting-edge health care simulation curriculums for hospital staff. The goal of the courses is to improve overall clinical performance, reduce medical errors and increase patient safety.

These "courses-in-a-box" contain a complete array of educational tools for Faculty Instructors, Participants and Simulation Support Personnel.

The Institute of Medicine's 2000 report "To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System" suggested that close to 90% of medical errors are a result of failed systems and procedures. The Joint Commission, which accredits and certifies more than 15,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States, cites team training as an essential factor in reducing risk of medical errors. The 2009 National Patient Safety Goal, which applies to Hospitals and Critical Access Hospitals, requires formal education for those that provide urgent response to critical conditions.

The "Rapid Response Team Training" course developed by Michael DeVita, MD, an international leader in Rapid Response Systems and Associate Director at The Peter M. Winter Institute for Simulation Education and Research (WISER), is designed for physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and critical care physicians. Participants will learn to manage and avoid critical errors in the hospital, and focus on team skills such as communication and decision-making.

This training program was recently cited as a case study to meet the Joint Commission's National Patient Safety Standards in The Joint Commission Guide to Staff Education in 2008.

The "First 5 Minutes®" curriculum takes a multi-disciplinary approach to training hospital staff to manage a patient in a crisis situation and to respond appropriately during the critical first five minutes of a medical crisis before the Code Team arrives. The course is intended to improve identification of critical incidents, establish standardized behaviors for initial in-hospital responders and promote improved patient outcomes.

These new life-saving products are available to the health care community now.

The Rapid Response Team Training and First 5 Minutes Curriculum, developed in conjunction with SimMedical, are the most recent additions to Laerdal's growing courseware portfolio. The Simulation in Nursing Scenarios, developed in partnership with the National League for Nursing are used by nursing educators to train their students in undergraduate nursing programs. The ACLS scenarios, developed with the American Heart Association, teach and test learners to the 2005 AHA ACLS Guidelines. Laerdal's Emergency Preparedness Scenarios were created as a result of a partnership with the Gordon Center in Miami. These scenarios help prepare military, hospital, paramedics and pre-hospital first responders in the event of a Terrorist attack.
