Knobee Martens Olson & Bear LLP promotes a record number partners and hires 17 new associates.

Irvine, Calif. – A record number eight partners were named at Knobbe Martens Olson and Bear LLP in January. The firm also hired 17 new associates in the Fall of 2002. The expansion will help serve the firm’s growing client base.

The firm named as its newest partners, Mark R. Benedict, Joseph S. Cianfrani, Paul N. Conover, Karoline A. Delaney, Sabing H. Lee, Eric M. Nelson, Robert J. Roby and William R. Zimmerman.

“We are very pleased to name a record number of partners this year” said James B. Bear, managing partner. He continues, “Our new partners are talented legal practitioners who have provided our clients with outstanding service and guidance. They have all demonstrated their commitment to excellence, and we are privileged to have them as partners.” All of the new partners’ backgrounds are varied and help add to the firm’s diversity. “We have a broad base of clients, and the educational and technical backgrounds of our attorneys enables us to offer intellectual property law services to all areas of technology,” Bear said.

Mark R. Benedict, Ph. D. practices out of the firmÂ’s Orange County office. He counsels clients in intellectual property matters, specializing in patent prosecution and licensing in the areas of biotechnology, pharmaceutical and life sciences. He graduated cum laude from Drexel University with a degree in biology and he went on to earn a Ph. D. in biology from Syracuse University. Dr. Benedict earned his Juris Doctorate magna cum laude from Syracuse University College of Law. He joined the firm in 1997.

Joseph S. CianfraniÂ’s practice focuses on intellectual property litigation, including appeals. He is a member of several professional groups including the amicus committee of the American Intellectual Property Association on whose behalf he has filed several amicus briefs in the United States Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the California Supreme Court. Cianfrani earned an electrical engineering degree from the University of Virginia and went on to earn a MasterÂ’s degree in electrical engineering from George Mason University. He earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Virginia School of Law where he was the recipient of the John M. Olin Scholarship. After graduation, Cianfrani served as a law clerk to the Honorable Arthur J. Gajarsa on the United States Court of Appeal for the Federal Circuit. He joined the firmÂ’s Orange County office in 1998.

Paul N. Conover represents clients in various intellectual property matters, including patent litigation, patent prosecution and licensing. His clients include companies involved in optical, medical, automotive, aerospace, sports equipment, building construction, and computer technologies. Conover earned degrees in physics, mathematics and history from Brigham Young University. He earned his Juris Doctorate cum laude from the J. Reuben Clark School of Law at Brigham Young University.

Karoline A. DelaneyÂ’s practice focuses on chemistry and medical device related intellectual property law issues. She graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a degree in chemistry. She earned a MasterÂ’s degree in chemistry from Harvard University. Delaney graduated with a Juris Doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law where she was chief managing editor of the UCLA Journal of Environmental Law and Policy. She joined the firmÂ’s Orange County office in 1997.

Sabing H. Lee counsels clients in intellectual property matters and focuses his practice on patent prosecution, technology agreements and general intellectual property strategies, particularly in the fields of medical devices and materials engineering. He graduated, Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude from the University of California, Los Angeles with a Bachelor of Science and MasterÂ’s degrees in material science and engineering. Lee earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall). He joined the firmÂ’s Orange County office in 1997.

Eric M. Nelson is in the firmÂ’s San Diego office and represents clients in the software, Internet, electrical, and communication markets. His practice is focused on patent-related matters, technology licensing, and developing intellectual property strategies. Nelson graduated from Purdue University with a computer science degree. He earned his Juris Doctorate cum laude from Baylor Law School. He joined the firm in 1997.

Robert J. Roby joined the firmÂ’s Orange County office in 1997. His practice focuses on the medical device, automotive and related mechanical engineering industries. He graduated summa cum laude from the Russ College of Engineering and Technology at Ohio University with a degree in mechanical engineering. Roby received his Juris Doctorate from New York University School of Law.

William R. Zimmerman represents various clients in all types of intellectual-property disputes. He focuses on patent cases at both the district court and appellate levels. Zimmerman has worked extensively in the area of pharmaceutical litigation, as well as obtaining and licensing pharmaceutical-related intellectual property. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in chemical engineering. He earned his Juris Doctorate cum laude from Harvard Law School. After graduation, Zimmerman served as a law clerk to the Honorable Alvin A. Schall, Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He joined the firmÂ’s Orange County office in 1998.
