Music Festival Announces Call for Cotemporary Compositions – Winning Piece to be Performed in 2004 by Renowned Chamber Choir

The Bob Taylor Music Festival, an annual festival dedicated to the performance of new music, announces a call for choral compositions. During the July 2004 festival, the winning work will be performed by a professional 24 voice choir and subsequently recorded on a commercial compact disk. The composer will receive complimentary air travel arrangements to the festival and will be an honored guest and featured participant in the composersÂ’ forum.

The Bob Taylor Music Festival, an annual festival dedicated to the performance of new music, announces a call for choral compositions. During the July 2004 festival, the winning work will be performed by a professional 24 voice choir and subsequently recorded on a commercial compact disk. The composer will receive complimentary air travel arrangements to the festival and will be an honored guest and featured participant in the composersÂ’ forum. Possible publishing opportunities await the winning composition.

Compositions must be for a SATB choir and no more than 10 minutes in duration. Compositions may be for an a cappella choir or a choir accompanied by piano, organ, guitar, violin, mandolin, or any combination of the above (not exceeding 4 players).$25 dollar entry fee required for the submission of the first score, $10 each additional score. Submissions must be postmarked by June 15th. Please include a SASE if you would like your materials returned.

About the Festival and its Flagship Ensemble:

Founded and conducted by Dr. Robert Taylor, the choir is named after Bob Taylor, a pioneer in the development of high school choral music in Arkansas and the father of Robert Taylor. Modeled on the tradition of virtuoso chamber choirs of Europe and North America, the Bob Taylor Choir endeavors to promote the highest level of choral music, performing innovative, enriching choral music to as wide an audience as possible.

The festival is also host to evening concerts, solo voice master classes, and the Bob Taylor Music Festival Suzuki String/Celtic Music Institute, featuring the Hungry Monks, the festival's resident Celtic band and teaching faculty. This institute focuses on the development of music students of all ages, providing intensive musical instruction within a music festival environment. Directed by Mary Taylor, the Suzuki Violin and Celtic Music Workshop will feature a faculty of some of the countries leading performers and educators.

About Dr. Robert Taylor:

Called a conductor whose work is "expert," Taylor's choirs have been described as sounding "more musical than would seem possible" (Robert Jones, Charleston Post and Courier) and have received numerous plaudits for their technical proficiency and beautiful sound production. Dr. Taylor's ensembles have performed throughout the U. S., Great Britain, and Ireland, and have been featured in numerous festivals and special concerts, including the Choral Artist Series of the Piccolo Spoleto Festival, the 2003 American Guild of Organists Region IV convention, the 2003 South Carolina Music Educators Association Convention, 2002 among others. Dr. Taylor holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting degree from Louisiana State University, a Masters of Music in Vocal Performance from Sam Houston State University, and a Bachelor in Music Education degree from the University of Central Arkansas. Taylor is currently the Director of Choral Activities at the College of Charleston in Charleston, SC, and the Director of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra Chorus and the CSO Chamber Singers.
