This week, with Barack Obama’s presidency approaching its two-year mark, a panel of scholars and experts will assemble at the Encyclopaedia Britannica blog to assess the 44th president's performance and political standing and anticipate what’s in store for him and the country in the next two years.
Beginning today, about a dozen guest bloggers, including political scientists, historians, communications researchers and journalists will mix it up in a series of posts that will run through Wednesday.
Participants, from different fields and points on the political compass, will include:
Jennifer Mercieca, professor of communication at Texas A&M University and author of “Founding Fictions”; Allan J. Lichtman, professor of history at American University in Washington, D. C., and author of several books, including “Prejudice and the Old Politics: The Presidential Election of 1928” and “The Keys to the White House”; Mary Stuckey, professor of political science and communication at Georgia State University and author of several books, including “The President as Interpreter-in-Chief”; David Boaz, executive vice president of the Cato Institute and author of “Libertarianism: A Primer” Joseph Lane, professor and chair of the department of political science at Emory & Henry College and coauthor of “The Deconstitutionalization of America: The Forgotten Frailties of Democratic Rule.” “Some pundits say Obama is in political trouble following the midterm elections, but historians point out that his poll numbers are actually better than those of Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton at this point in their presidencies,” said Britannica executive editor Michael Levy. “There’s plenty of conventional wisdom for any position you want to take, but we’re going to try to go beyond that and beyond mere punditry. It should be an entertaining and illuminating discussion.”
