The American College Center for Ethics in Financial Services announced that Anthony H. Catanach Jr., Ph. D., CPA, has been appointed as the Cary M. Maguire Fellow in Applied Ethics. Catanach, an Associate Professor at the Villanova School of Business, is the first recipient of this fellowship offered by The American College Center for Ethics in Financial Services.
The fellowship is made possible through a generous donation to The College by Cary M. Maguire, Chairman and President of the Maguire Oil Company and Maguire Energy Company.
The Maguire Fellowship is an academic research position dedicated to examining instances of disclosure in financial markets. Specifically, the Maguire Fellowship in Applied Ethics is designed to investigate what forms of disclosure are meaningful and how this "meaningful disclosure" can be promoted and encouraged. Dr. Catanach's research will focus on the accounting industry, where he has worked as a practitioner and an academic.
"Tony is an exceptional choice for the fellowship," said Ronald F. Duska, Ph. D., the Charles Lamont Post Chair of Ethics and the Professions, Director of The American College Center for Ethics in Financial Services and Professor of Ethics. "The valuable leadership, insight, and forward thinking Tony brings to this appointment will yield significant insights to the study of ethics and financial services."
Dr. Catanach has been with Villanova University since 1998. He previously held positions as Assistant Professor of Commerce at the University of Virginia, Visiting Scholar at Capella University in Minnesota and Visiting Professor of Accounting and Control at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France.
Catanach earned his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification in 1980. He attended the University of New Mexico for his Master of Art in Accounting and Arizona State University for his Ph. D. in Accounting.
In addition to his former teaching positions, Catanach spent five years as an audit manager and six years in the financial services industry as a funds management officer, chief financial officer, and chief operating officer for several large bank holding companies, where he specialized in merger and acquisition transactions. He now serves as a national instructor for several global professional services firms.
He is actively involved in committees and activities both on and off Villanova's campus as a member of various editorial boards as well as associations such as the American Accounting Association (AAA), American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), and The Institute of Certified Management Accountants (ICMA).
The American College will be presenting Catanach's research findings during the year through a series of events.
