Her Majesty Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan visited CentroNÃa on Tuesday, May 31. The visit was aimed at providing Her Majesty with a first hand view of a model of an Early Childhood Education Program in the US during her visit to Washington, DC.
CentroNÃa is community based organization that provides affordable high quality education and support services to children and families in DC. Serving over 800 children and youth for almost 20 years, CentroNÃa has been recognized nationally for its leadership in the field of early childhood education, school age services and family support.
Queen Rania is a champion for women and children's rights. As one of the worldÂs powerful voices for young people, her Majesty launched an initiative to reform the early childhood education curricula in her home country. Upon its completion in July 2008, the project's beneficiaries will include 10,600 kindergarten children, 1,000 ECE professionals. ÂThe visit to CentroNÃa is also an expression of her dedication on behalf of children around the worldÂ, a member of her protocol staff declares.
Queen Rania accompanied by Marian Wright Edelman, President of the ChildrenÂs Defense Fund and Beatriz Otero, CentroNÃaÂs executive director, toured the infant and toddler center and had the opportunity to engage children, and talk with teachers and parents of the DC Bilingual Public Charter School, managed by CentroNÃa. Queen Rania expressed particular interest in the training for Early Childhood teachers provided by the Professional Development Academy at CentroNÃa.
As she toured the Before and After School Program and learned about the variety of services available to families, Queen Rania commented: ÂYou certainly make it easy for parents.Â
Her tour concluded with the presentation by Carmen Ramos, Chair of the Board of Directors at CentroNÃa of a piece of childrenÂs artwork to commemorate her visit.
