Full Sail Welcomes Legendary Filmmaker George A. Romero

Full Sail, a media arts college located in Central Florida, welcomes George A. Romero. The legendary filmmaker will speak to students and staff as part of Full Sail's continuing Artist Series.

Winter Park, FL (PRWEB) April 8, 2004

Legendary horror director George A. Romero will be the featured guest speaker at the Tuesday, April 6th, Artist Series event to be held at Full SailÂ’s main campus. Produced by Full SailÂ’s Film School, this event provides a unique opportunity for students to interact with a true visionary filmmaker. This Artist Series event will start at 7:00pm.

Best known for 1968Â’s Night of the Living Dead, RomeroÂ’s early work helped usher in a new breed of cinema. With a previously unseen blend of explicit gore and biting social commentary, Night of the Living Dead contains some of the most influential images put to screen and clearly defined the rules of modern horror films.

“If Night of the Living Dead was the only film he ever directed, he would still be considered a legend,” says Dave Meyers, Course Director for Full Sail’s Film History class. “That film raised the ante in terms of what was acceptable in American cinema. The horror movies that followed it took on an entirely different tone in their approach to on-screen violence and subject matter.”

Other notable Romero films include Creepshow, The Dark Half, and 1978’s Dawn of the Dead. Influencing a generation of filmmakers with its mix of blood-soaked horror and social satire, Dawn of the Dead went on to become one of the most successful independent films ever made. “Dawn of the Dead is a prime example of George’s innovative approach to filmmaking,” says Meyers. “Its grim ending, strong female and minority characters, and skewed take on American culture elevate it far above other entries in the genre. To this day he is still somebody who is not afraid to work outside of the system in order to maintain the integrity of his vision.”

Full Sail is proud to welcome George A. Romero to campus for what promises to be an unforgettable experience. “George is somebody who literally changed the cinema,” Meyers explains. “There are not many filmmakers out there who hold that title. There are filmmakers who can say they had a successful film and made a lot of money, but only a few changed the way in which movies are made. It’s a great opportunity for our Film students to rub shoulders with a cultural icon.”

Full SailÂ’s continuing Artist Series is designed to bring nationally recognized creative artists to Full Sail. The Artist Series events include on-stage interviews, performances, screenings and Q&A sessions for students and staff.
