About the Angel of the Arts Award and its recipient:
The Angel of the Arts award is presented to a community member or business for outstanding contributions to the arts in Ann Arbor. Past recipients of the Angel of the Arts awards include Ken C. Fischer, Edith Leavis Bookstein, Joe O'Neal, Phyllis Wright and Daniel C. Walker.
This year's award will be presented to Ann C. Cooper. Ann has supported the Performance Network both on the Board of Directors and as a committee member for the past 20 years. She completed her second consecutive term as President of the Board in October of 2005 and now serves on the advisory committee. Ann is a talented and well-respected mixed media artist, leader in the arts, and has always had an interest in uniting the creative use of drama to help troubled children. As a social worker at the Children's Psychiatric Institute at the University of Michigan, she treated children using creative drama to encourage them to be imaginative and expressive in dealing with their problems. Before coming to Ann Arbor, Ann served as the Educational Director at the Boston Children's Theater. She began the Boston Public Library's Creative Drama Program and served as Actress and Director at the Poet's Theater in Cambridge, MA. Ann also has roots at Eastern Michigan University where she was a lecturer in creative drama.
