BoardBoost™ Corporate Governance Seminars now expands to Cooperatives and Government agencies

Financial compliance and Sarbanes-Oxley (SO) also need to be understood by the public sector and Cooperatives, along with Non-Profits and the Private Industry

Falls Church, VA (PRWEB) June 15, 2004

BoardBoost™ Seminars announced today it is expanding the availability of its customized corporate governance seminars to Government agencies and Cooperatives.

“In having worked with non-profits and with State Governments for many years, I want to see BoardBoost assist agencies and co-ops in their financial understanding and effectiveness," says Morris Nunes, President of BoardBoost™ Seminars.

Mr. Nunes believes that though financial accounting and reporting for government agencies and co-ops is different from the private sector, there are common problems in the appreciation, presentation and interpretation of financial information and communications.

“Agencies would surely benefit from the tools and information that our seminars provide, just as private sector and non-profit firms have. Our seminars provide uniform methods for testing, verifying and analyzing financial operations and reporting that allow comparability and benchmarking among dissimilar organizations, applicable on a day to day basis or over the long term,” Nunes explained.

His approach is reflected in the remarks that Roberta “Bobby” Zarem, the IRS’ Director of Customer Education and Outreach, made at the 40th Annual Washington Non-profit Legal and Tax Conference on Thursday, March 11th. Ms. Zarem spoke about the need for Exempt Organizations to implement 2004 guidelines, noting that Government agencies (even the IRS) and Non-profits ought to be up to date in their knowledge of Sarbanes-Oxley. Ms. Zarem stated that the IRS has started a full Exempt Organizations Compliance Unit, located in Ogden Utah, which became operational in January. That Unit will develop strategies addressing non-profit compliance issues, most often through targeted examination projects. “[The IRS] will implement a revised and invigorated federal and state information sharing process that will promote joint enforcement efforts, and enhance our partnership with state charity officials,” said Ms. Zarem.

"We believe BoardBoost™ offers the ideal launching pad for this kind of effort. In a single day we provide the opportunity to look at the organization from several perspectives, linked by comparability standards, to be sure the right questions are being asked and the right answers accessed," said Nunes.

When Nunes spoke before the board of the Best Western hotel chain in April, 2004, he commended the board for recognizing the new metric for board performance is fast becoming the Sarbanes-Oxley mandates set by Congress in the wake of Enron, WorldCom and similar accounting scandals. (...MORE...)

“What boards and government agencies are not being made aware of is that information for compliance purposes should support mission success, not be a troublesome impediment,” Nunes stated. “Any board that assures its organization has solid informational and decision processes and good communications will not find SO to be traumatic, as good decisions fundamentally depend on good input information. Every Board member needs to ask the core question about corporate governance,” explained Nunes, “How do you know that the information that you receive and on which you cast your votes is not already flawed, biased, skewed, inaccurate, incomplete or just plain fraudulent?”

Nunes clarifies, “A BoardBoost™ Seminar teaches board members how to strip away hype, skewed information and misleading data to get down to core, true facts on which decisions ought to be based. Without that capability it is very difficult for any board to succeed and to protect itself against claims of negligence or worse.”
