“I hope that these events and the articles in this magazine serve to inspire, acknowledge and engage Londoners through the sharing of information and the building of positive partnerships.” Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone

This yearÂ’s issue of Black Heritage Today magazine, officially launched by the Mayor of London last year, will be available on a nationwide scale from October 1st 2004.

Widely referred to as the ‘Ultimate Guide to Black History Month’ in the UK, the magazine is supported by a number of government organisations such as The Arts Council of England, ALM London Museum's, The Mayor of London, The Black History Foundation and The Home Office.

According to Tessa Jowells, Minister for Culture Media and Sports: “When the Mayor launched his ‘London Celebrates Black Heritage’ initiative last year, he struck an important cord because London is the most diverse city on earth. 45% of the UK’s ethnic minority population live in London, so the time is ripe for recognition and celebration of its past and heritage - rich as it is and hundreds of years older than many realise…Black Heritage Today embody’ such a celebration.”

The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone had this to say: “I launched my ‘London Celebrates Black Heritage’ initiative in order to begin the process of developing a long-term strategy for promoting and preserving black history and heritage in the capital…Black Heritage Today promises to become a key platform for co-ordinating and showcasing the events and initiatives being organised across London as part of the annual Black History Month season.

“I hope that these events and the articles in this magazine serve to inspire, acknowledge and engage Londoners through the sharing of information and the building of positive partnerships.”

Although the magazine began with a predominantly London-wide distribution and focus, it has now adopted a national outlook, covering most parts of the UK. Barbara Campbell, Founder and Publisher of Black Heritage Today magazine said: "I tested it in a few areas outside of London last year in 2003 and the reaction was such I knew I had to take it further afield and produce a sufficient amount to cater to the demand. Black Heritage Today is a one-stop-shop for most educational establishments who wish to part-take in Black History Month and bring something extra into the lives of their pupils (maybe it will even help put more Black History formally onto the curriculum).

"There are interesting facts, features of historical interest, interviews and an Arts and Entertainment section that lists comprehensively what is happening during Black History Month.”

Black Heritage Today magazine is free and is available at the GLA, CRE, Town Halls (around the UK), selected Tescos stores, Libraries, Community Centres, Universities, Colleges and Schools. Copies of the publication will also be distributed at functions relating to Black History Month.
