Science CenterÂ’s MEHRC Named an OSHA Training Institute Education Center

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) June 26, 2003

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)announced that the Science Center has been named a Training Institute Education Center, allowing the Science Center to offer specialized OSHA training to help make the buildings we live and work in healthier.

In partnership with Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), the Science CenterÂ’s MidAtlantic Environmental Hygiene Resource Center (MEHRC) received the certification after a competitive, national search by OSHA for organizations with the capacity to provide high-quality training and outreach in the areas of indoor environmental health and occupational safety.

“These education centers were selected because they can best support our national training and education mission,” U. S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao said during the announcement. “The additional centers will help us meet increasing demand for OSHA training and provide added value to our outreach efforts in a variety of areas.”

One of the immediate impacts of this new status will be to increase the number of OSHA classes in the Pennsylvania region. MEHRC and IUP are the only OSHA Training Centers in the state.

Dr. Smith said one of the key reasons for MEHRC’s success in getting this certification was the partnership with IUP. Working with IUP connects us with one of the nation’s stellar academic programs in this field,” she said. “With MEHRC’s experience in delivering high-quality training in environmental health and IUP’s academic background in this area, we really complimented each other well.”

For nearly 20 years, MEHRC has been training professional building managers how to keep their buildings healthy and safe for their occupants. Each year, they offer dozens of courses, such as “Managing Building Air Quality and Energy Efficiency” and “Investigating, Sampling, Identifying, and Assessing Contamination in the Indoor Environment.”

“This new certification is a vote of confidence in the quality of MEHRC’s training,” said MEHRC Director Susan Smith, PhD. “The new OSHA classes will build on and compliment what MEHRC has already been doing—training people how to operate healthier buildings.”
