On Friday, October 22, 2004, The Knowledge and Power Preparatory Academy III, otherwise known as KAPPA III, will host its annual KAPPA III KICK-OFF Celebration from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM.
KAPPA III is located between 179th and 180th streets and Mapes Avenue in the Bronx. It is one block west of Southern Boulevard, adjacent to Mapes Pool. KAPPA III is a relatively small school with a lot of heart. KAPPA III opened its doors to the Tremont-Crotona Community on September 4, 2003. Since its opening, their students have made tremendous contributions to the community.
In September 2003, KAPPA III students marched with pride with the Crotona Community Coalition, the Mary Mitchell Family and Youth Center, Neighborhood Youth and Services, and the 48th Precinct in the Annual Crotona Community Stop the Violence March. All 60 students, parents, and staff marched through the streets of the Bronx showing their support for safe streets and nurturing neighborhoods. In addition, KAPPA III students invited various community leaders, businesses, and neighborhood residents to a Grand Opening Celebration. Students showcased their commitment to education and excellence by singing the school song and pledge, presenting their research projects about their family heritage, and speaking with various people about their future goals and aspirations. The students were impressive and continue to make their community proud.
This yearÂs KAPPA III Kick-Off Celebration will highlight the accomplishments of its students during the last school year and introduce the community to new features and upcoming events. As KAPPA III continues to grow and flourish into an elite middle school in the Bronx, it will also continue to need support from the surrounding community.
Through various grants and donations from local businesses, educational organizations, individual donors, and parents, KAPPA III was able to purchase flutes for their entire school and hire a renowned flutist. In addition, KAPPA III was able to tour Princeton University, the United Nations, and the Great Blacks in Wax Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. This year KAPPA III has added a new grade and has grown from 60 students to 120. They will purchase additional brass instruments and music stands, tour Washington D. C. and Colonial Williamsburg, and attend Yale UniversityÂs college tour.
The mission of KAPPA III is to foster a nurturing learning environment that supports, challenges and raises expectations for youth in the South Bronx. KAPPA III provides a rigorous academic program that prepares students for admission into independent boarding, private day, and specialized high schools. The KAPPA III initiative took root as part of the vision of increased performance created by the Local Instructional Superintendent and the Regional Superintendent of Region 2 in the Bronx. KAPPA III is also supported by Replications Inc., an organization that locates successful model schools, identifies their essential features, and replicates them in other communities.
