Coaching is a fast-evolving profession that continues to benefit a significant number of individuals and organisations. Its reach is spreading widely round our shrinking and increasingly interconnected world and in order to ensure continued validity, coaching must adapt and embrace other cultures.
Sir John Whitmore, one of the leading figures in the international coaching community, emphasises the need for coaches to embrace the next generation of coaching approaches, moving away from Western reductionism, towards methods that have meaning and spiritual purpose.
Sir John will be presenting his progressive ideas at the third annual National Coaching Psychology Conference to be held at City University London, on Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 December 2007, organised by the British Psychological Society's Special Group in Coaching Psychology.
"Coaches and coaching psychologists must include transpersonal understanding and techniques if they are to meet growing cross-cultural expectations, but also to meet the needs of the large percentage of their clients who have meaning and purpose issues", said Sir John. The next generation of coaches need to address these issues, if they are to keep pace with emerging coaching and leadership needs.
"Coaching is still a new and developing industry, and one whose methods are rooted in psychology. Like education, it lags behind leading edge thought, and it is essential that it not only catches up, but that it leads the way in future", explains Sir John.
Sir John is a pre-eminent thinker in coaching, leadership and organisational change. He is the author of the 'Coaching for Performance', a cornerstone of the coach's library, as well as several other books on coaching, sports and leadership. His pioneering work in the coaching arena includes working with multinational corporations and government organisations in various continents to establish coaching management cultures and values-based leadership for whole system transformation.
