Washington, DC – GradPAC Chairman Shawn N. Olds announced the endorsement of West Point graduate and successful businessman Sandy Lyons to represent North Carolina's 10th Congressional District today.
Recently, GradPAC’s executive board voted unanimously to endorse Mr. Lyons’ candidacy for the upcoming July 20th primary election in North Carolina.
“Sandy is the embodiment of 'Leaders of the Nation' which West Point and our other service academies seek to produce,” said Chairman Olds. “Sandy's distinguished military service was marked with tactical aplomb and achievement at the very top of his peer group. He found the same success in business thereafter, leading two billion dollar companies and exhibiting tremendous business acumen and vision.”
Olds continued, "Now, rather than continuing his stellar career in the private sector, Sandy has once again answered the call to duty to serve in the United States Congress. His selfless willingness to forego personal gain and ambition to best serve his community and country is something to be venerated and emulated by veterans across the nation. Simply put, Sandy is uniquely qualified to represent the citizens of North Carolina's 10th Congressional District and has devoted his entire adult life to making a difference in the lives of others.”
“Not only does Sandy understand the educational, economic and other communal needs of his district, he also has a keen understanding of the paramount issues of national defense and national security having honorably served his nation in uniform. Clearly, Sandy Lyons is the best choice to represent western North Carolina in the U. S. House of Representatives,” said Olds.
Lyons graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1979. After graduation, he served as a United States Army Infantry Officer after intensive training at Ft. Benning, Georgia and Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. Subsequently, Lyons served in the elite Artic/Mountain Brigade in Alaska, helping to craft new Army warfare doctrine for such terrain and receiving the Impact Army Commendation Medal for his efforts, among other awards and decorations during his military service.
After his accomplished Army career, Lyons continued his education through executive programs at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business and Harvard University’s School of Business. Later, he founded two manufacturing businesses, the Elite Technologies Group and Omega One Communications. He also led two billion dollar telecommunications companies as President and CEO of both Siecor Corporation and Corning Cable Systems.
Lyons has served on the boards of the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the North Carolina Electronics and Information Technologies Association (NCEITA), Siecor Corporation, easyfurnish. com and Corning Cable Systems. He is also a member of the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE).
In his North Carolina community, Lyons has served as a member of the SALT Block Board as well as a Chairman of the United Arts Fund. Additionally, he is a member of the Foresight Group Steering Committee and the Chairman of the Regional Task Force on Job Creation and Economic Development.
Lyons also supports numerous civic and educational organizations including the Catawba County Council for the Arts; the United Arts Fund; The Acoustic Stage; the Western Piedmont Symphony; the West Point Fund; Thayer Circle; Sipe’s Orchard Home; the Culver Educational Foundation; and the Boy Scouts of America. He is a member of the Smithsonian, James Smithson Society; the Culver Legion; National Geographic Society, Grosvenor Council; and the National Rifle Association.
Lyons, his wife Catherine and their three children reside in Hickory, North Carolina.
