Like many women considering plastic surgery, 36-year-old Julia found she had one final hurdle. “I just couldn’t confide in a man, even a doctor, about where I felt ugly. After all, I’d spent my life covering up my bulges and blotches from men,” she said.

A record 7.5 million women had cosmetic surgery last year, up 33% from 2002, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Of the 8.7 total million nips and tucks in 2003, women counted for counted for 82% and they chose liposuction most often, followed by breast augmentation, nose reshaping, eyelid work and facelifts.

Yet only a handful of board-certified female surgeons reside in the Southland, home to thousands of male plastic surgeons. Dr. Petti is becoming famous for putting a feminine face on plastic surgery. She won the “Top Surgeons” Award for the fifth year in a row from the Consumers Research Council of America, been called an “Artist with a Scalpel” by the Daily Breeze, featured on The Discovery Channel and was recently the focus of a month-long cable TV series. “Up Close.”

Dr. Petti will extend her role as a media expert on health and beauty issues this summer with an appearance on the popular series “Speaking of Women’s Health” on Lifetime Network.

One of the patients she performed surgery on for the “Up Close” series was June of Redondo Beach, Calif., who said she was surprised with the dramatic change not only in her figure, but in her “self image and lifestyle” which Dr. Petti notes is just as important as the physical change plastic surgery can bring.
