Access to the Internet in the U. S. is about as common as having cable TV, but it’s still a luxury many families cannot afford. Now, thanks to new, affordable wireless Internet technology, a connected community is emerging among low-income residents.

Propel Wireless, a revolutionary Kansas City-based Internet Service Provider, is teaming up with Lawrence FreeNet, a Lawrence, Kan. non-profit organization, offering free high-speed Internet connections to low-income residents. Propel Wireless provided the large scale bandwidth to the non-profit, which allowed them to offer service to people who couldn’t afford it otherwise.

Jordan Smith, Propel Wireless President, is thrilled to be working with Lawrence FreeNet on this initiative. “The affordable product Propel Wireless offers makes this project a reality. We are excited to provide a service that will unite the local community by diminishing technological barriers,” Smith said.

Studies show that while Internet access is on the rise in the U. S., many low-income residents are not able to benefit from it. A report from the U. S. Department of Higher Education found that only 31 percent of low-income students had computer access at home, compared to 80 percent of students from higher-income families.

Joshua Montgomery, founder of Lawrence Free Net, understands the impact technology has on education. “With education becoming more dependent on the Internet, it’s even more critical that we level the playing field for all students and families,” said Montgomery. “By bridging the technology gap, our hope is that all residents will have the same tools for success regardless of income.”
