PurePolitics. com announces 2002 Person of the Year

Atlanta, Georgia, January 2, 2003, PurePolitics. com announces its 2002 Person of the Year: The U. S. Military. The U. S. Military was selected by our visitors and editorial oversight committee of PurePolitics. com.

The Year 2002 was a year very historic year in the realm of U. S. politics and global international affairs. During 2002, we had the Enron, WorldCom debacles, crisis in Iraq, sniper attacks, Election 2002 GOP sweep, terror reigns, the economy rocks and rolls, homeland security, catholic sex scandal, Sen. Lott's exit, and rise of potential conflict with North Korea.

As Americans, it seems our paradigm of how we perceive the people, cultures, countries around the world has changed. We no longer view problems and conflicts in the Middle East, Afghanistan or Third World countries as somebody else's problems. The terror and fear of terrorism has seeped into every American household. Feeling secure within our Homeland has become so very important.

America and the world will begin the Year 2003 in a sober frame of mind. In the 15 months since Sept. 11, 2001, we have grown accustomed to living in a state of apprehension.

After Afghanistan, anthrax, the Bali bombing and myriad failed terrorist attempts, the war on terror is always with us. It influences all aspects of our lives -- not just at airports where we wait in long lines to pass through heightened security precautions, but in what we see at the movies, what our religious leaders tell us at prayer, how our investments in the stock market rise or fall, and whether our allies vote with or against us in international forums

The one constant throughout the Year 2002 has been the men and the women of the U. S. Military. The ubiquity of American military power is extraordinary. At the end of 2001, the U. S. had 255,000 active-duty troops overseas based in 148 nations. Since then, some 60,000 troops have been pre-positioned for a possible invasion of Iraq, and the U. S. has developed major new bases in Qatar, Djibouti, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

Thousands of families across the United States have family members and friends over seas fighting and protecting the very freedoms and security that we have enjoyed as Americans for over 200 years. As President George Bush once said, "We know what works: Freedom Works. We know what's right: Freedom is right." As we reign in the Year 2003, remember that the freedoms we enjoy today can be directly correlated to the our 2002 Person of the Year: The U. S. Military.

"We Americans of today, together with our allies, are passing through a period of supreme test. It is a test of courage-of our resolve-of our wisdom-our essential democracy." - FDR ~ Fitting words for the importance of our U. S. Military. God Bless the men and women of the United States Military!

President Jimmy Carter polled second with President George W. Bush a close third out of eight finalists for the 2002 Person of the Year. The other five finalist were: Rush Limbaugh, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Barry Bonds, Tiger Woods and Saddam Hussein.

To select nominees for the PurePolitics. com 2002 Person of the Year, we utilized our greatest asset -- our visitors.
