Diversity in Machinima production became the theme of the event as a wide range of productions were recognized during the awards presentation. ”The honoring of so many different Machinimas just speaks to its strength as a medium. Artists are exploring many different formats using Machinima, each with its own unique approach and execution,” said Paul Marino, Executive Director of the Academy of Machinima Arts and Sciences. “We’ve always promoted Machinima as a platform for creative expression, and this year’s awards is a testimony to that.”
The 2005 Machinima Film Festival, sponsored by NVIDIA and IFC, is an annual event held to showcase selected Machinima works produced over the past year. The 2005 Machinima Awards recognizes excellence in Machinima production and are announced at the start of the Machinima Film Festival. The award winners have been posted to the festival website (http://festival. machinima. org (http://festival. machinima. org)) – a DVD of the 2005 winners is also currently planned. The 2006 Machinima Awards will begin accepting submissions in May of 2006.
About Machinima and the Academy of Machinima Arts & Sciences
The medium of Machinima (ma-SHEEN-eh-mah) is often recognized as the merging of three separate but related artforms: filmmaking, animation and video game technology. By combining the real-time cinematic capture of action and performance (filmmaking), artistic creations moved over time (animation) and interactive virtual environments (game technology), Machinima represents a creatively flexible storytelling medium that both embraces its lineage as well as expands upon it.
The Academy of Machinima Arts and Sciences, a NY-based non-profit organization, was co-founded in 2002 by its Executive Director, Paul Marino to promote, organize and recognize the growth of Machinima filmmaking and filmmakers. Mr. Marino, an Emmy Award-winning animator, is also the author of the first book about Machinima: 3D Game-Based Filmmaking: The Art of Machinima (2004, Paraglyph Press).
