Emerald Mountains Publishing has Embarked on a New Experiment in Publishing and Reading Education

Emerald Mountains Publishing has Embarked on a New Experiment in Publishing and Reading Education

Emerald Mountains Publishing, a new start up company, has released a new learning tool for children, four interactive children's books on a CD.

(PRWEB) January 17, 2005

Emerald Mountains Publishing has released a new learning tool for children. Tales from the Emerald Mountains is an interactive CD with four picture stories on it. The stories are written into a program format that allows the child to hear a word pronounced with a mouse click. The child can hear the whole page read by clicking on the READ button.

Emerald Mountains Publishing LLC, a new start up company, produced Tales from the Emerald Mountains for the purpose of allowing young children to utilize the most powerful learning tool available to most households, the personal computer, for the purpose of education and fun.

John D. Mc Cracken, the author of the stories, says that in creating the world of the Emerald Mountains, he wanted an imaginary place where children could find humor and safety. He did this by creating Glock Coe, a small village in the Emerald Mountains. It is a place where little adults make mistakes in dealing with each other and then have to find solutions to their problems without resorting to violence or threatening behavior.

These little people, cousins to the leprechauns, like all children and adults, suffer lapses into thoughtlessness and self-centeredness, which can anger the people around them. The stories offer lessons in peaceful conflict resolution.

The stories have been merged into a program that allows children to practice reading. If they get stuck on a word, all they have to do is click on the word with the mouse pointer and it will pronounce itself. If a child would rather hear the story read, all he or she has to do is click on the read button and the page will read itself.

Because the child is being entrusted with the family computer, adult supervision is recommended.

Several educators who evaluated the CD said it would be an excellent learning tool for children with reading disabilities. All of them rated the stories as good to excellent.

Emerald Mountains Publishing is a new startup company with one product at the moment, Tales from the Emerald Mountains. However, there are plans to expand the product line into other picture books on CD based on the same format as Tales from the Emerald Mountains. It also expects to expand into childrenÂ’s chapter adventure books within the next eighteen months to two years.

Private Sector, President's Malaria Initiative Join Forces to Strengthen Angolas Capacity to Control Mosquitoes

Private Sector, President's Malaria Initiative Join Forces to Strengthen Angolas Capacity to Control Mosquitoes

Training program for Angola's front-line malaria efforts sponsored by Chevron, Corporate Alliance on Malaria in Africa

Luanda, Angola (Vocus) February 15, 2010

Top global companies and the President’s Malaria Initiative (http://www. fightingmalaria. gov/) are working with the Government of Angola on an intensive technical training program to arm the country’s malaria fighters with state-of-the-art mosquito surveillance and vector control techniques.

By aiding the sharing of these comprehensive technical skills and best practices in mosquito monitoring and evaluation, as well as providing training on how to use the latest malaria control products, the private sector will help Angola, which reported more than 3.1 million cases of malaria in 2009, move more quickly toward reducing the disease’s deadly impact.

Public and private sector health technicians from the provincial and district level will acquire basic capabilities and skills that are needed to determine the impact of malaria control efforts around the country, a gap which hampers decision-making on resource deployment at the national level.

When completed, the technicians will be able to monitor and evaluate mosquitoes, before sending them to senior scientists for further entomological analysis. The senior entomologists and malaria program officers will be empowered with critical information to ensure the success of sustainable malaria control programs and the ability to deploy limited resources more effectively and efficiently.

Company representatives also will train the participants in techniques for using a variety of state-of-the-art malaria intervention products, such as long-lasting, insecticide-treated malaria nets and indoor residual sprays.

The workshop, which kicks off February 15 in Bengo, is organized by the Corporate Alliance on Malaria in Africa (http://www. gbcimpact. org/about-gbc/cama) (CAMA), President’s Malaria Initiative, the Government of Angola, USAID’s implementing partner Research Triangle Institute International (RTI) and the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria. It is part of the Angola National Malaria Control Program’s overall effort to scale-up malaria prevention and treatment services to reduce the health, social and economic burden resulting from the disease.

Other partners in the effort include the World Health Organization African Regional Office. Lead corporate sponsorship is by the Chevron Corporation, with additional private sector support from Halliburton, Bayer, Sumitomo Chemical, Cameron International and Vestergaard Frandsen.

The Ministry of Health, through the National Malaria Control Program, has utilized integrated vector control as one of the country’s main malaria control interventions, including prevention programs such as the widespread use of insecticide treated nets, indoor and outdoor residual spraying, and larviciding. At present the country is implementing a nation wide program for larval control - including all the cities in the country. This program is integrated with a massive distribution program of insecticide treated nets and localized indoor and outdoor spraying in a selective and sustainable manner, making these valuable actions in the fight against malaria in Angola. With this training, the National Malaria Control Program will create institutional capacity for vector control at the local level and create conditions for Angola to develop a pilot project in Africa for Integrated control of vector borne diseases. (Nilton Saraiva, Angola National Malaria Control Program)

“Malaria remains the main cause of mortality in Angola,” said Alan Kleier, Chevron Managing Director for Southern Africa Business Unit. “As part of Chevron’s core community investment strategies, we will continue to work closely with the Angolan Government and partners in order to meet the goal of a malaria-free Angola. I firmly believe that our investment in this capacity building training program in entomology is equally important as our contribution of $5 million made in 2008 through the Global Fund against Malaria for Angola. It will help create a group of Angolan experts who will be better prepared to fight this disease.”

“This unique partnership between the private sector, Government of Angola and PMI provides an opportunity to build in country capacity to monitor malaria control interventions in Angola,” said Rick Wilkins, Vice President, Corporate Alliance on Malaria in Africa and General Manager Health & Medical Services, Chevron. “It builds a foundation to develop an effective resistance management and monitoring strategy in Angola - areas in which the private sectors expertise can be leveraged.”

“This training will provide robust knowledge for Angola’s entomologist technicians,” said Jules Mihigo, PMI/Angola. “Health staff will be trained to monitor resistance to insecticides used for bed nets and indoor residual spraying, and will also be able to detect morphological distinction between a culex and anopheles. These skills will contribute to reduce the burden of malaria in Angola.”

About PMI
The President's Malaria Initiative (http://www. fightingmalaria. gov/) (PMI) represents an historic five-year expansion of U. S. Government (USG) resources to fight malaria in the region most affected by the disease. The President committed an additional $1.2 billion in malaria funding to this Initiative with the goal of reducing malaria-related deaths by 50 percent in 15 focus countries. This will be achieved by expanding coverage of highly effective malaria prevention and treatment measures to 85 percent of the most vulnerable populations - children under 5 years of age and pregnant women. This package of high-impact interventions includes insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs), indoor residual spraying (IRS) with insecticides, intermittent preventive treatment for pregnant women (IPTp), and artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT).

To date, the PMI has contributed $63.45 million in funding ($7.5 million in 2006, $18.5 million in 2007, $18.5 million in 2008, and $18.75 million in 2009) for malaria prevention and treatment in Angola. To this funding is added $3 million made available by the PMI to ERD and ADPP for malaria community programs. Additionally, the ExxonMobil Foundation has provided gifts totaling $3.5 million to USAID over the past 4 years to directly support PMI activities in Angola. Ahhh, the Humanity! MyFax Chooses 10 Messy Office Finalists: Public now invited to choose winner online in Messy Office Contest

Ahhh, the Humanity! MyFax Chooses 10 Messy Office Finalists: Public now invited to choose winner online in Messy Office Contest

Forget Hillary. Forget Barack. The real election news is that the 10 finalists have been selected by the MyFax "messperts," and now it's time for the People to have their say regarding who is the biggest slob in the MyFax Messy Office Contest.

OTTAWA (PRWEB) February 26, 2008

For the next week, those who wish to reward those brave souls who turn their noses up at society's pressures to conform to the rules of organization and propriety can go to www. messyofficecontest. com and select the one office they believe stands out as "the messiest of them all." Voters are encouraged to take factors such as originality, creativity, and artistic merit of the mess into account when making their selection.

"This contest has been an educational and uplifting experience for many of us here at MyFax," said Joseph Nour, CEO of Protus IP Solutions, which owns and operates MyFax. "Educational because we had no idea the level of utter chaos in which so many people work. Uplifting because we really, really feel a whole lot better about our own offices here. Honestly, many of these entrants probably qualify for FEMA grants."

Finalist selection is open to anyone who chooses to go online and vote. Each individual may only vote once. The Grand Prize is $10,000. In addition, each finalist has already earned a $200 gift certificate to Amazon. com as well as a one year subscription to the MyFax Internet fax service, which carries an approximate retail value of $110.

"It's obvious from looking at the photos that these messy offices didn't just happen overnight," Nour added. "They are the result of years of commitment to carefully creating stacks of monthly reports, old pizza boxes, newspapers and magazines, and I don't even want to think about what else. We congratulate all the finalists on making it this far, and wish them all the best of luck in the voting. May the messiest office win!"

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York's Bank Supervision Group Deploys Online Training Program from The Edcomm Group

As part of a continued relationship with The Edcomm Group, The Federal Reserve Bank of New York has taken delivery of one of four critical on-line learning courses directed at educating their entire employee population.

(PRWEB) July 14, 2004

As part of a continued relationship with The Edcomm Group, The Federal Reserve Bank of New York has taken delivery of one of four critical on-line learning courses directed at educating their entire employee population.

The Bank Supervision Group of The Federal Reserve Bank of New York is committed to excellence in their work in keeping the FedÂ’s member banks in regulatory compliance. In doing so, it is important that those who provide support to this Group be knowledgeable in the process and procedures of Bank Supervision.

The Edcomm Group wrote and developed this program in close coordination with the existing polices and procedures of the Federal Reserve Bank as a web-based (distance learning) training tool. The Bank's employees are able to pace their development between modules and among programs according to their other business obligations. This program is a model for on-line education in both form and function, having been specifically created by Edcomm web designers and staff trainers.

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York is one of the 12 regional Reserve Banks, which, together with the Board of Governors in Washington, D. C., make up the Federal Reserve System. The "Fed," as the system is commonly called, is an independent governmental entity created by Congress in 1913 to serve as central bank of the United States. In addition, it has important roles in operating the nation's payment systems, protecting consumer rights in their dealings with banks and promoting community development and reinvestment.

The Edcomm Group is a 17-year-old multimedia education and communication consulting firm specializing in the development of creative business solutions that improve productivity, customer service and market share - providing bottom-line results.

The Edcomm Group (www. edcomm. com) is headquartered in New York City with an Advanced Design Center located in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania.

Financial Aid Professionals Have a New Place to Exchange Information

Financial Aid Professionals Have a New Place to Exchange Information

A new web site is available for those in the financial aid profession. Many sites currently exist, but the launch of www. finaidpro. com provides a user driven format which encourages interaction and participation. The site is free and all that is needed to participate is to create an account.

New York, NY (PRWEB) June 16, 2004

Student Financial Aid Professionals around the nation were recently provided with a new tool to help provide the best service possible to students seeking a college education. FinAidPro. com was launched on May 11 with the intent of helping Financial Aid Professionals exchange information and ideas as well as share resources.

The concept for the web site began when two friends on opposite sides of the nation conceived of a web site where files related to general office procedures and communication with students and parents could be shared. Matt Clemons and Brendon Connelly graduated from the George Fox University MBA program in 2001. Matt now works in New York at Manhattan School of Music and Brendon works in Oregon at George Fox. Both share a personal web site and their interest in web site development was the impetus for the creation of FinAidPro. com.

“The goal from the beginning was a user driven site,” according to Connelly. “There are multitudes of sites that provide excellent information, but we wanted to provide a space where people could interact with one another and post information and files for anyone in the profession to use.”

“The file repository was definitely the genesis of the site,” states Clemons. “Why reinvent the wheel if you don’t have to? We found ourselves asking each other for documents and report templates and knew that people all over do the same thing.”

At present the three focal points of the site are a file repository, a discussion forum, and syndicated news feeds tied into topics related to financing and higher education. But both Clemons and Connelly have high hopes that the users will “take over” the site.

Connelly affirms this in saying, “We really hope that users will drive the content and come up with new ideas about how the site can be used. It was never our intent to be seen as experts; rather we want to provide a platform for those in the community to toss out ideas, questions, and contribute to the continued development of the field.”

The two co-founders also hope to be able to provide scholarship funding to aspiring students. Advertising is provided via the Google Adsense program and items with the site logo can be purchased through a link to Cafepress. com. There has been discussion about a donation link, but a final decision has not been made.

Any profits over and above the cost to host the site will go into a scholarship fund. Each time the fund reaches $500 a scholarship will be awarded to a student based upon criteria established by users of the site. “It seems like a win-win,” stated Clemons. “The community gets the chance to discuss effective means for providing access to education, and at the same time, hopefully provide practical access to some deserving students.”

If you have questions or comments, feel free to send an email to finaidpro@finaidpro. com.
