Traveling on a budget? The editors of MayanHoliday. com, a news and information site covering Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya, have put together a list of the area's top free and fun activities.

The first tip is to take advantage of the free salsa dancing lessons offered at the La Bodequita del Medio restaurant in the Paseo del Carmen Mall, on the southern edge of the town square in Playa del Carmen. A few blocks south of the mall, and along the beach, are the Xaman-Ha Mayan ruins. They are easily accessible from the road or the beach and they are free to explore.

A great activity for families on any beach vacation is to build a sandcastle. For families visiting the Riviera Maya, this traditional activity can take on a fun twist by building castles in the shape of Mayan ruins. The pyramid of Chichen Itza is a great model to follow, with its pyramid shape and tiny steps going up the sides.

Nature lovers will want to take special note of the next two tips. The first one is to get up early to watch the sun rise over the Caribbean. Some people like it even more than watching a sunset and since the beaches of the Riviera Maya face east, it's your best chance for taking pictures of the sun just above the Caribbean. Another good natural activity is to walk along the interpretive nature trail at the back of the parking lot of the Las Palapas hotel, located at 38th Street and the beach, also in Playa del Carmen. On the way back to town, stop by the park across from the municipal building and learn to count in Mayan from the educational displays along the walkway.

At meal times, travelers are reminded to take advantage of the free appetizer/drink coupons offered by many restaurants along Quinta Avenida in downtown Playa del Carmen. After dinner, don't miss the chance to watch the fire dancers perform their nightly show on the beach of the Blue Parrot bar at 11pm or at the next-door El Pirata bar at midnight.

One of the editors' favorite tips is to join the locals for a street party in Cozumel, complete with live music, which is hosted each Sunday evening in the island's town square.
