Adventures with the Shady Characters® is a unique computer based game for preschoolers ages 3-5. Available in both English and Spanish, the game teaches preschool-age children how to stay safe in the sun. The 2004 Interactive Awards competition recognizes excellence in interactive programs,
Internet communications and online advertising. The New York Festivals (NYF) oversees six international awards competitions one of which is Interactive Media. Adventures with the Shady Characters was selected in the childrenÂs game category. Entries are judged internationally by panels of peers in their respective industries. The 2004 Interactive competition was judged by a panel of new media experts worldwide under the aegis of Graham Kelly, Executive Creative Director of Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising in Singapore. Entries were judged on the basis of screen design, logic and complexity of organization, effective use of resources, creativity, technical quality, effective presentation of information, compelling interactivity and effective solution to the problem.
Adventures with the Shady Characters® is available through download or on CD-ROM through www. theshadycharacters. com. HealthMark received funding from the National Cancer Institute to develop and test these products. The games were field-tested in Spring and Summer 2004 to determine their use in supporting the sun protection behaviors of preschool children and adults who care for them.
