Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) February 27, 2006

Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) Phoenix have announced applications for the 2006 Boots & Ray Reed Scholarship and the Dowers Family Scholarships are now available.

The purpose of the scholarships is to recognize outstanding gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and straight ally youth (heterosexual youth who demonstrate outstanding direct support to GLBT youth and/or the GLBT community), to encourage continuing education for self-identified GLBT and straight ally students, and to foster a positive image of GLBT young people in society. The submission deadline is April 30th.

Applicants must be a self-identified gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender youth, or a straight ally youth, and be 16 years or older as of May 1, 2006. Further eligibility requirements and scholarship application forms can be downloaded online at www. pflagphoenix. org or by calling the PFLAG Phoenix helpline at 602-843-1404.

The Boots & Ray Reed Scholarship is a single, non-renewable $1,000 scholarship. The scholarship is named in honor of Boots and Ray Reed, past chapter presidents of PFLAG and long-time volunteers of the organization.

The Dowers Family Scholarships include two single, non-renewable scholarships of $750 each, and are funded by the Dowers family and awarded through PFLAG Phoenix. Dee Dowers, a native of England, learned of PFLAG several years ago and actively supports the growing acceptance of GLBT youth.

PFLAG promotes the health and well-being of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons, their families and friends through support, education, and advocacy. PFLAG provides opportunity for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity, and acts to create a society that is healthy and respectful of human diversity.
