A new initiative launched by Foster Care Associates (FCA), the UK' s leading independent fostering agency aims to improve educational outcomes for looked after children, in the run up to GCSE, Standard Grade and end of year examinations.
In line with the Government agenda, FCA in conjunction with Fleet Tutors will implement a personalised learning programme to support all of its Year 11 and Secondary 4th pupils, from January 2008 onwards. Each pupil benefiting from the scheme will receive one-to-one tuition in a subject of their choice, covering a 12-week period.
Director of education services at FCA, Tim Whittingham commented: "This latest initiative by FCA has been brought about through discussions with looked after children, reflecting a real need for one-to-one tuition. Our cohort of 130 foster children who are in their final year of compulsory education expressed a genuine desire to better engage in key subjects such as maths, english and science.
"It is, therefore, FCA's intention to provide the necessary support structure to help our looked after young people realise their full educational potential. We hope to see an increase in both the number of examinations sat and the grades achieved as well as an increase in the numbers continuing into full time education, post 16.
He continued: "Many of the young people placed with FCA have had a poor educational experience both pre-care and in their previous placements. The message that we are trying to get across is that despite the challenges which the looked after child may face, academic achievement and success is possible with the right guidance and support.
"Final year examinations and qualifications are a passport to employment and into further education."
