GetMyHomesValue. com Attends Random Hacks of Kindness Hackathon 2010

Online real estate company sponsored lead programmer to participate at this year's Random Hacks of Kindness Hackathon.

Lancaster, PA (Vocus) June 8, 2010

GetMyHomesValue. com, a Lancaster-based company providing online real estate lead generation (http://info. getmyhomesvalue. com/), sponsored their lead programmer Stephen Rees to participate as a "hacker" during this year’s Random Hacks of Kindness (RHoK) Hackathon in Washington, D. C., June 4-6, 2010. The Random Hacks of Kindness Hackathon gathered software developers from all over the world to help respond to challenges facing humanity in the areas of disaster response and risk mitigation. Rees contributed his skills toward developing new ideas, specifications, and code that served the goals of this community.

During the hackathon, software developers dedicated their time to planning and coding sessions. Over 160 registrants spent two days producing more than 15 applications for entry. The applications being developed endeavor to promote immediate survival, provide short term reporting and information dissemination, and support long term recovery efforts in the aftermath of a disaster.

“This was an eye-opening and educational experience for me to be a part of,” stated Rees. “Being able to meet and work with talented programmers from all over the country to not only address, but contribute a solution to worldwide needs is extremely rewarding.”

Rees had the opportunity to participate on a project dedicated to creating software for emergency response teams. The project, World Wide Community Emergency Response Team (WWCERT), designed a simple coordination tool to be used worldwide. The program manages contacts such as volunteers and equipment within the area of a crisis. Rees would like to develop this program for usage as a mobile application with capabilities to track status, facilities and people.

Much of the strategy was developed during the hackathon, but Rees is continuing to work to address project hurdles and needs with hopes of completing the application by next year.

The winner selected at the end of the event was the “Access to Landslide Prediction Software for Risk Reduction” group. All other groups’ applications will be documented with what the participants accomplished during their time at the RHoK Hackathon. Much of what was developed will continue to be worked on for the remainder of the year and/or picked up again during the next RHoK Hackathon until complete.

Random Hacks of Kindness
The RHoK hackathon aims to help improve the world. The Random Hacks of Kindness is a joint effort founded by Google, Yahoo!, Microsoft, NASA and The World Bank and is dedicated to bringing software developers together to respond to challenges facing humanity in the area of natural disaster risk. The RHoK’s Hackathon of 2009 solution was used on the ground in Haiti and Chile following the devastating earthquakes there in early 2010.
