West Palm Beach, FL (PRWEB) September 10, 2006

Karline’s of the Palm Beaches, Palm Beach County’s first and only ethnic Paul Mitchell Signature Salon, will host a week of public awareness activities for those living with and at risk of diabetes, Tuesday, September 12, 2006, through Saturday, September 16, 2006.

The salon will also distribute a diabetes awareness public service announcement featuring Mary Ida Vandross, mother of the late Grammy Award-winning artist, Luther Vandross, to local television stations. The efforts serve as a prelude to “Fabulous 2006,” the salon’s annual gala on September 17, 2006, 6pm, at the Harriet Himmel Theatre for Cultural and Performing Arts at CityPlace, 700 South Rosemary Avenue in West Palm Beach, FL.

“Makeover Your Diabetes Week” features special services, information and discounts to encourage the community to manage, control and prevent diabetes. The salon will offer free foot massages (Tuesday through Friday 10am -11am and 4pm – 5pm; Saturday 10am – 4pm), information on diabetes provided by the American Diabetes Association (Palm Beach County Affiliate) and a nutrition presentation by Carol Peirce, MS, RD, LD/N of the Palm Beach County Dietetic Association (Saturday, September 16 at 10am). Throughout the week, the salon will distribute raffle tickets and 10% off future services discount coupons to those who contribute $1 - $5 to its “Fabulous 2006 Fund” benefiting the American Diabetes Association and Divabetic, a national diabetes support organization inspired by Luther Vandross. Raffle prizes include “New Soul Food Cookbook For People With Diabetes” courtesy of the American Diabetes Association and a gift basket of personal care products, courtesy of J. I. Distributors of Opa-Locka, FL. Winners will be announced at the “Fabulous 2006” gala. The salon also invites clients and the general public to honor the legacy of Luther Vandross by signing a memory scroll pledging a commitment to healthy lifestyles and the fight against diabetes. Karline’s of the Palm Beaches will deliver the scroll signifying Palm Beach County’s love for Luther to the Vandross family.

“Makeover Your Diabetes Week” events will be held at the salon’s flagship location, 1900 Okeechobee Boulevard in West Palm Beach, FL. Events are free, no appointments or reservations are necessary. Contributions will be accepted at both the flagship location and its recently opened salon serving Palm Beach County’s western community, 6340 Forest Hill Boulevard in West Palm Beach, FL.

Makeover Your Diabetes Week is the first of a series of activities Karline’s of the Palm Beaches will offer throughout the year to support diabetes education. In recognition of this commitment, the salon enlisted Mrs. Mary Ida Vandross, mother of Luther Vandross, and Max Szadek, Founder of Divabetic, to tape a thirty second public service announcement promoting diabetes awareness. The salon appeals to local television stations to broadcast the announcement in the public interest.

According to the Florida Department of Health, nearly one million adults in Florida have been diagnosed with diabetes. Those who have diabetes are more than twice as likely to be Black. The prevalence of obesity, a risk factor for diabetes, was highest among non-Hispanic Blacks, followed by Hispanics.

Founded in 1997 by Karline Ricketts, Karline’s of the Palm Beaches is a full-service beauty salon and spa serving the personal care needs of consumers in Palm Beach County, Florida. With the July 2006 grand opening of a second location to serve the western region of the county, Karline’s of the Palm Beaches employs 16 stylists, spa, retail and administrative professionals.
