Major Move for Cleaning College

Major Move for Cleaning College

Expansion and relocation of Matthew Boulton College to purpose-built premises in the centre of Birmingham has added fresh challenge for national contractor, Regent, to manage day-to-day cleaning of one of the UK’s centres of cleaning excellence.

In addition to a nationally acknowledged reputation as one of the top providers of healthcare training and development, the College is also at the forefront in the development of training for the cleaning sciences.

The College offers a range of accredited and bespoke programmes for all levels of employees in facilities and housing management. The programmes are either delivered within the College's fully equipped accommodation suite or off-site to suit individual need.

Matthew Boulton College’s new £40 million state-of the-art building provides stunning premises to house both existing and developing business.

With 250 staff and 3000 students, it is the largest further education development in the West Midlands and approaches the second largest national project.

The College has close and active links with a large number of key industry bodies including the British Institute for Cleaning Science (BICS), the Cleaning and Support Services Association (CSSA) and the Cleaning Industry National Training Organisation (CINTO).

Matthew Boulton operates from a total of three sites overall. Cleaning is undertaken by contractors, Regent Cleaning.

Under the supervision of site manager Gill Sweenie, a supervisor, three day janitors and nearly 40 cleaners are responsible for ensuring that the College’s three buildings are cleaned to the very high standards expected of a major cleaning training resource.

“Relocation has added to the challenge of cleaning here,” admits Gill, “but the team has risen to meet it and keep the College in optimum condition through a significant change programme.”

The programme agreed between Regent and the College covers class rooms, work shops, offices, theatres, conference rooms, wash rooms, canteens, stairs, corridors and laboratories.

The Regent cleaners clean the premises from 6.00am to 9.00am, leaving three day-janitors on site from 10.00am to 8.30pm. Gill and her site supervisor are on site from 6am until 2pm daily.

Regent also covers all external areas and car parks. The latest and most efficient technology is much in evidence on all sites with daily use of ride on sweepers, scrubbing machine and a ride on vacuum cleaner for corridors.

“We have endeavoured as a company to put the best equipment on site to do the best job possible,” says Gill Sweenie.

Matthew Boulton facility manager, John Starmer sums up: “No matter how exciting a new building is, it is the quality of our staff and our commitment to meeting the needs of our students and our customers that matter.

“We inevitably have the most exacting standards to maintain when it comes to the cleanliness of our own premises. These are being met by a contractor which makes an effort to share in our stated vision ‘to inspire learning and achieve excellence’”.
