National Wear Red Day Launches Local Heart Disease Awareness Effort; Local Businesses and Fashion Designers Unite to Promote Black WomenÂ’s Heart Health

In observance of American Heart Month, Public Square Communications in partnership with the Office of WomenÂ’s Health, US Department of Health and Human Services today announced a schedule of local activities being held in February to raise black womenÂ’s awareness of their risk for heart disease. Several local businesses and fashion designers have lined up to support the effort being launched on National Wear Red Day, Friday, February 4.

In observance of American Heart Month, Public Square Communications in partnership with the Office of WomenÂ’s Health, US Department of Health and Human Services today announced a schedule of local activities being held in February to raise black womenÂ’s awareness of their risk for heart disease. Several local businesses and fashion designers have lined up to support the effort being launched on National Wear Red Day, Friday, February 4.

Local activities are being held in conjunction with The Heart Truth, a national campaign that is raising public awareness about women and heart disease. The centerpiece of The Heart Truth campaign is a Red Dress—the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness.

Schedule of Activities

Friday, February 4 - National Wear Red Day – Operation DC Red Alert

On National Wear Red Day thousands of Americans nationwide will wear red to show their support for women's heart disease awareness, DC area residents and businesses are encouraged to unite in this life-saving awareness movement by showing off a favorite red dress, shirt, or tie. Public Square Communications will distribute information to female commuters, businesses and beauty salons to promote heart disease awareness. Scheduled stops include:

8:15 a. m. - U Street Corridor/Howard/Shaw Metro Area

10:00 a. m. - Capitol Hill Area

12:00 p. m. - Karibu Books at PG Plaza

Friday, February 25 – Heart and Style Kick-Off Breakfast and Red Dress Fashion Show Preview

A kick-off breakfast for media and invited guests in advance of Heart and Style: Sisters Living Long and Living Well, a one-day heart health conference and fair for black women, sponsored by the Office on WomenÂ’s Health, Public Square Communications and Lord and Taylor.

Saturday, February 26 – Heart and Style Fair and Red Dress Fashion Show

A one-day heart health conference and fair featuring black womenÂ’s health experts, educational workshops, health and lifestyle exhibitors, heart healthy food tasting by Whole Foods Market at P Street and JasperÂ’s Restaurant, book signings by Karibu Books, free makeovers by Sephora and a Red Dress Fashion Show hosted by Angela Russell of WJLA/ABC 7 News.
