Ellis University - a non-profit, independent online learning institution - launched today as a result of its transition from Ellis College and after achieving independent accreditation by national and regional accrediting bodies.
On May 28th, 2008, Ellis University was granted accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and is also accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council. The University is an Illinois-based institution with operating and degree-granting authority from the Illinois Board of Higher Education. Ellis University has roots in Ellis College, which was a collaborative partnership with the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT). Ellis University will operate independently and offer a host of new programs in professions that are in high demand.
Ellis College was originally founded in 2003 to provide working adults a way to advance their careers via an online learning environment. Ellis' learning platform is based on a social constructivist learning pedagogy (learning by doing). While the transition will bring about changes and more opportunities for students, the University's mission will not shift under its new moniker. Dedicated faculty and academic advisors will continue to provide the quality services students expect.
"While we consider our new designation a monumental accomplishment, the ultimate benefits of this recognition and adherence to stringent standards will be to our students, faculty and staff," said Dr. David D. Harpool, President of Ellis University. "Our students will receive a high-quality, adult-centered, professional education, setting up a lifetime of possibilities."
Among the new opportunities for students, the University has added the following programs to its former Ellis College curriculum:
College of Behavioral Sciences: Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice with concentrations in Forensic Investigation, Corrections and Leadership/Management; Bachelor of Science in Paralegal Studies; and Associate of Applied Science in Paralegal Studies College of Business: Master of Science in Management College of Education: Master of Arts in Teaching
These programs and others offered by Ellis University rate high on the institution's new Professional Opportunities Index (POI). The index was developed to ensure that the University's programs are among those predicted by the U. S. Department of Labor to grow at an above-average rate for the next decade.
In addition to its new offerings, Ellis University will continue providing its innovative online learning platform that connects students and instructors in both classroom and social environments. Designed to maximize the online learning experience, this platform is proprietary to Ellis and was created to benefit working adults.
